Characterization of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) collection using quantitative and qualitative traits in the Mediterranean Basin

This study was conducted to determine the genetic diversity and relationship among 256 groundnut genotypes of which 132 belong to subsp, hypogaea （Arachis hypogaea L.） and 124 to subsp, fastigiata （Arachis fastigiata L.）. The collection was evaluated for eight quantitative and five qualitative traits during three consecutive years under Mediterranean climate conditions. Coefficient of variation （CV） significantly differed among the genotypes for all the studied quantitative traits ranged from 9.10 to 33.98%, while the highest CV was recorded for seed yield. The subspecies of hypogaea and fastigiata displayed significant differences for quantitative traits except for numbers of pods per plant and seed yield. Principal com- ponent analyses showed that the first three principal components accounted for 68.14% variation for quantitative traits. Major traits that accounted for the variation by the three principal components （PCs） include days to the first flowering, days to 50% flowering, number of pods per plant and shelling percentage. The groundnut collection also offers wide seed coat color diversity which affects the crop marketability. The information on variations in quantitative and qualitative traits identified in the present investigation provided useful genotypes which would be serving parents. These parental genotypes can be used in groundnut breeding programs to develop desirable cultivars in Mediterranean Basin and globally.

Evolution of Microstructure, Residual Stress, and Tensile Properties of Mg–Zn–Y–La–Zr Magnesium Alloy Processed by Extrusion

The microstructure, texture, residual stress, and tensile properties of Mg–6 Zn–2 Y–1 La–0.5 Zr(wt%) magnesium alloy were investigated before and after extrusion process, which performed at 300 °C and 400 °C. The microstructural characterizations indicated that the as-cast alloy was comprised of α-Mg, Mg–Zn, Mg–Zn–La, and Mg–Zn–Y phases. During homogenization at 400 °C for 24 h, most of the secondary phases exhibited partial dissolution. Extrusion process led to a remarkable grain refi nement due to dynamic recrystallization(DRX). The degree of DRX and the DRXed grain size increased with increasing extrusion temperature. The homogenized alloy did not show a preferential crystallographic orientation, whereas the extruded alloys showed strong basal texture. The extrusion process led to a signifi cant improvement on the compressive residual stress and mechanical properties. The alloy extruded at 300 °C exhibited the highest basal texture intensity, the compressive residual stress and hardness, and yield and tensile strengths among the studied alloys.

Genetic analysis of selected almond genotypes and cultivars grown in Turkey using peroxidase-gene-based markers

Peroxidase plays important roles in many stress-related interactions and catalyzes important reactions in various physiological processes. Since peroxidase played critical roles in the evolution of almond（Prunus dulcis Miller（D.A Webb） syn P. amygdalus Batsch）, peroxidase-gene-based analyses may increase the understanding of evolution of this species. Peroxidase gene polymorphism（POGP） markers were used to determine genetic diversity and relationships among 69 Turkish genotypes/cultivars and 27 foreign almond cultivars by using unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean（UPGMA） analysis. This study is the first evaluation of the use of POGP markers for diversity analysis in ***, 83 fragments were obtained from eight peroxidase primer pairs, and polymorphism was identified as 94 %.Similarity level among the genotypes ranged between 0.63 and 0.93, and all materials were distinguished. In general,Turkish and foreign genotypes were mixed in clusters since they share a common genetic background and gene migration among the sites. Clusters were not based on geographic regions except for some minor groupings. This study indicated that peroxidase gene markers can be reliably used to determine genetic relationships in almonds.

Development of Composite Textile Structures for Wound Dressing Applications

The main objective of this research work was the development of novel and responsive nonwoven composite structures containing gelling materials for wound management. The development of novel all inclusive collagen booster(CB) therapeutic nonwoven wound dressings was mainly focused on. It provides essential functional properties such as high absorption,vertical and lateral wicking,and antibacterial and acidic pH properties. The developed composite wound dressing consisted of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) fibre and also it was reinforced with polylactic acid( PLA) fibre. The produced composite wound dressings were treated with two different CBs at 4% by using the spray method. The details of the CBs have not been disclosed in this paper due to the Intellectual Property Rights( IPR) issues. The important benefit of using CB treatment is that it allows the maintenance of an acidic pH environment at the wound area. It is well known that acidic pH reduces the wound healing time and enhances the wound healing process. Furthermore,one of the CBs not only promotes the proliferation of the epithelial cells in wounds but also can provide antibacterial action. The PLA fibre reinforced CMC composite dressing has enhanced wicking properties which help to minimise the pooling of exudate on the wound bed and as a result maceration is prevented. The CBs treated dressings maintain the wound bed in an acidic pH condition which also improves the wound healing process. In addition to the above-mentioned properties,the CB treatment imparts antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria,thus resulting in the reduction in the propensity for wound infection. Ultimately,the research has proved that the 4% CB treatment enhances the antimicrobial activity and the acidic pH characteristics of the developed CMC /PLA composite wound dressings.

Detecting treeline dynamics in response to climate warming using forest stand maps and Landsat data in a temperate forest

Background: Treeline dynamics have inevitable impacts on the forest treeline structure and composition. The present research sought to estimate treeline movement and structural shifts in response to recent warming in Cehennemdere, Turkey. After implementing an atmospheric correction, the geo-shifting of images was performed to match images together for a per pixel trend analysis. We developed a new approach based on the NDVI, LST(land surface temperature) data, air temperature data, and forest stand maps for a 43-year period. The forest treeline border was mapped on the forest stand maps for 1970, 1992, 2002, and 2013 to identify shifts in the treeline altitudes, and then profile statistics were calculated for each period. Twenty sample plots(10 × 10 pixels) were selected to estimatethe NDVI and LST shifts across the forest timberline using per-pixel trend analysis and non-parametric Spearman’s correlation analysis. In addition, the spatial and temporal shifts in treeline tree species were computed within the selected plots for four time periods on the forest stand maps to determine the pioneer tree ***: A statistically significant increasing trend in all climate variables was observed, with the highest slopein the monthly average mean July temperature(tau = 0.62, ρ < 0.00). The resultant forest stand maps showed a geographical expansion of the treeline in both the highest altitudes(22 m–45 m) and the lowest altitudes(20 m–105 m) from 1970 to 2013. The per pixel trend analysis indicated an increasing trend in the NDVI and LST values within the selected plots. Moreover, increases in the LST were highly correlated with increases in the NDVIbetween 1984 and 2017(r = 0.75, ρ < 0.05). Some geophysical parameters, such as those related to gravitation and the geomagnetic field, could change during solar eclipses. In order to observe geomagnetic fluctuations, geomagnetic measurements were carded out in a limited time frame during the partial solar eclipse that occurred on 2011 January 4 and was observed in Canakkale and Ankara, Turkey. Additionally, records of the geomagnetic field spanning 24 hours, obtained from another observatory （in Iznik, Turkey）, were also analyzed to check for any peculiar variations. In the data processing stage, a polynomial fit, following the application of a running average routine, was applied to the geomagnetic field data sets. Geomagnetic field data sets indicated there was a characteristic decrease at the beginning of the solar eclipse and this decrease can be well-correlated with previous geomagnetic field measurements that were taken during the total solar eclipse that was observed in Turkey on 2006 March 29. The behavior of the geomagnetic field is also consistent with previous observations in the literature. As a result of these analyses, it can be suggested that eclipses can cause a shielding effect on the geomagnetic field of the Earth.

Comparison of satellite images with different spatial resolutions to estimate stand structural diversity in urban forests

The structural diversity in urban forests is highly important to protect biodiversity. In particular, fruit trees and bush species, cavity-bearing trees and coarse, woody debris provide habitats for animals to feed, nest and hide. Improper silvicultural practices, intensive recreational use and illegal harvesting lead to a decline in the structural diversity in forests within larger metropolitan cities. It is important to monitor the structural diversity at definite time intervals using effective technologies with a view to instituting the necessary conservation measures. The use of satellite images seems to be appropriate to this end. Here we aimed to identify the associations between the textural features derived from the satellite images with different spatial resolutions and the structural diversity indices in urban forest stands (Shannon-Wiener index, complexity index, dominance index and density of wildlife trees). RapidEye images with a spatial resolution of 5 m × 5 m, ASTER images with a spatial resolution of 15 m × 15 m and Landsat-8 ETM satellite images with a spatial resolution of 30 m × 30 m were used in this study. The first-order (standard deviation of gray levels) and second order (GLCM entropy, GLCM contrast and GLCM correlation) textural features were calculated from the satellite images. When associations between textural features in the images and the structural diversity indices were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, very high associations were found between the image textural features and the diversity indices. The highest association was found between the standard deviation of gray levels (SDGLRAP) derived from RVIRAP of RapidEye image and the Shannon-Wiener index (H h) calculated on the basis of tree height (R 2 = 0.64). N-acetylcysteine attenuates alcohol-induced oxidative stress in the rat

AIM: There is increasing evidence that alcohol-induced liverdamage may be associated with increased oxidative *** aimed to investigate free-radical scavenger effect of n-acetylcysteine in rats intragastrically fed with ***: Twenty-four rats divided into three groups werefed with ethanol (6 g/kg/day, Group 1), ethanol and n-acetylcysteine (1 g/kg, Group 2), or isocaloric dextrose(control group, Group 3) for 4 weeks. Then animals weresacrificed under ether anesthesia, intracardiac blood andliver tissues were obtained. Measurements were performedboth in serum and in homogenized liver *** (MDA) level was measured by TBARSmethod. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxidedismutase (SOD) levels were studied by commercial ***-Wallis test was used for statistical ***: ALT and AST in Group 1 (154 U/Land 302 U/L,respectively) were higher than those in Group 2 (94 U/L and155 U/L) and Group 3 (99 U/L and 168 U/L) (P＝0.001 forboth). Serum and tissue levels of MDA in Group 1 (1.84 nmol/mL and 96 nmol/100 mg-protein) were higher than Group 2(0.91 nmol/mL and 64 nmol/100 mg-protein) and Group 3(0.94 nmol/mL and 49 nmol/100 mg-protein) (P＜0.001 forboth). On the other hand, serum GSH-Px level in Group 1(8.21 U/g-Hb) was lower than Group 2 (16 U/g-Hb) andGroup 3 (16 U/g-Hb) (P＜0.001). Serum and liver tissue levelsof SOD in Group 1 (11 U/mL and 26 U/100 mg-protein)were lower than Group 2 (18 U/mL and 60 U/100 mg-protein)and Group 3 (20 U/mL and 60 U/100 mg-protein) (P＜0.001for both).CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that ethanol-induced liver damage is associated with oxidative stress,and co-administration of n-acetylcysteine attenuates thisdamage effectively in rat model.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure,analysis and compare the tooth size and arch length discrepancy of class 1 malocclusion as determined by bolton and carey for the chinese and indian （dravidian） ethnicity between the age group of 13 to 18 respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this materialistic study with theretrospective analysis, total of 80 patients cast ,40 cast （20 males and 20 females） of indian and （20 males and 20 females） of chinese were taken and measured the mesiodistal width of both upper and lower jaws and cephalometric analysis were done for the same , the indian record were taken at Department of orthodontics meenakshi ammal dental college chennai india and the chinese were taken in Department of orthodontics chongqing stomatology hospital affliated to chongqing medical university. Chongqing, China. RESULTS: In this nine parameters of cephalometric analysis seven parameters came out to be significant both in males and females namely SNB, SN-POg, MP-SN, Y-Axis, U1-L1, U1-SN and L1-MP. In respect to the comparison between Chinese and Indians, Chinese were found to be significant in all the parameters mentioned above. And in arch length tooth size analysis out of seven parameters four parameters proved to be significant MD width of mandibular teeth, overall ratio and Mandibular arch length were significant in Indian males over Chinese males but in females only MD width of mandibular teeth proved to be significant. CONCLUSION: Cepahlometric values are specific for each and every ethnic group. The normative data for Indian and Chinese population should be used as a guide for diagnosis and treatment plan for orthodontist in their country.
