Effect of Short Chain Alcohols upon Viscosity of TTAB Solution

The effect of ethanol （C2H5OH）, propanol （C3H7OH）, and butanol （C4H9OH） upon the viscosity of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide （TTAB） solution in the presence or absence of KBr at 30℃was investigated, where the surfactant concentration CS is kept constant. In the absence of KBr, the relative viscosity ηr of TTAB solution increases linearly with the alcohol concentration CA, indicating that the alcohols do not promote micelle formation of TTAB. In the presence of KBr, ηr linearly decreases with CA for C2H5OH, but it exhibits a maximum with increasing CA for C3H7OH or C4H9OH. The facts reveal that C2H5OH or C4H9OH promotes the micelle formation of TTAB. A possible explanation is that the hydrophobicity of the mieellar interior is enhanced by KBr, so that C2H5OH or C4H9OH can dissolve in micelle and promotes micelle formation. In the presence of KCl, which is less efficient in promoting the micelle formation of cationic surfactant, both C3H7OH and C4H9OH have only a slight effect on the micelle formation. In contrast, due to the hydrophilicity, C2H5OH cannot dissolve in micelles in the presence of KBr or KCl.

Cardiac hypertrophy is the strongest predictor of the development of heart failure, and anti-hypertrophic treatment holds the key to improving the clinical syndrome and increasing the survival rates for heart failure. The paraoxonase(PON) gene cluster(PC) protects against atherosclerosis and coronary artery diseases. However, the role of PC in the heart is largely unknown. To evaluate the roles of PC in cardiac hypertrophy, transgenic mice carrying the intact human PON1, PON2, and PON3 genes and their flanking sequences were studied. We demonstrated that the PC transgene(PC-Tg) protected mice from cardiac hypertrophy induced by Ang II; these mice had reduced heart weight/body weight ratios, decreased left ventricular wall thicknesses and increased fractional shortening compared with wild-type(WT) control. The same protective tendency was also observed with an Apoe^(-/-)background. Mechanically, PC-Tg normalized the disequilibrium of matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs)/tissue inhibitors of MMPs(TIMPs) in hypertrophic hearts, which might contribute to the protective role of PC-Tg in cardiac fibrosis and, thus, protect against cardiac remodeling. Taken together, our results identify a novel anti-hypertrophic role for the PON gene cluster, suggesting a possible strategy for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy through elevating the levels of the PON gene family.

Selective modification of peptides has always been a challenging issue. The selective alkylation of peptides can alter the biological activity and physical properties of molecules, and it has gained significant research interest. We herein disclose an intriguing gold-catalyzed alkylation of peptides using bench-stable unactivated alkyl bromides under photoredox catalysis. A wide range of structurally diverse primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl bromides serve as effective coupling partners to precisely connect with the α-C(sp3)–H in glycine residue of peptides. This protocol demonstrates an exceptionally broad scope for alkyl halides and excellent tolerance for a wide range of useful functional groups. A series of relay transformations to construct cyclic peptides, to proceed click reaction and to realize peptide fluorescence labeling further enhance its synthetic practicality. In addition, mechanistic studies and density functional theory(DFT) calculations reveal an inner-sphere and subsequent outersphere single electron transfer(SET) mechanism.

Celastrol suppressesthe proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma cells through regulating miR-24 and miR-181b

Herbicide resistant rice breeding and utilization are significant to rice production. By screening the rice germplasm, we found the herbicide resistant material "Jinjing 818". A SNP mutation of G to A was present in the Acetolactate synthase(ALS) gene at 1,880 bp position, leading to the alteration of amino acid from serine(S, AGT) to asparagine(N, AAT), which conferring herbicide resistance. In this study, 11 allele-specific PCR(AS-PCR) primers were designed based on the functional mutation. After optimized these primers, we obtain two primer combinations F1N(AS-ALS-F1/AS-ALSn-R2-2) and F1M(AS-ALS-F1/AS-ALSmR2-1), naming the marker AS-ALS. By using AS-ALS marker to detect rice materials, hybrids, F2 populations and high generations lines, the results showed that the herbicide susceptibleness allele ALS-G could be amplified by F1N, the herbicide resistance allele ALSA could be amplified by F1M, and heterozygous genotype showed F1N and F1M amplified simultaneously. The genotype test results and phenotype perfect match. By the multigeneration backcross and self-intersection, aided by AS-ALS marker selection, the stability herbicide resistance rice materials were obtained efficiently. Moreover, the AS-ALS marker also can use to screen the herbicide resistant rice germplasm. In conclusion, the AS-ALS marker developed in this research is accurate, simple, effective and inexpensive, and has a strong practical value.

Breaking the structural symmetry of active sites in zeolite imidazolate framework for enhanced CO2 photoreduction

[Purpose] Circulating microRNAs(miRNAs) are important in diagnosis of diseases for thereason that miRNAs in serum or plasma are more stable. This study aims to explore the relationshipbetween the levels of serum miRNAs(let-7c) and clinical diagnosis of breastcancer(BC).[Methods] The circulating let-7c levels of 90 BC patients and 64 controls by quantitative reversetranscription PCR(RT–qPCR) assay. Estrogen receptor(ER) and progesterone receptor(PR) was detected by Immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis was performed using Rversion and SPSS software.[Results] The let-7c was found to be down-expressed in BC tissues compared with paracarcinomacontrol tissues. Then, the level of let-7c in the serum of patients was muchlower than that of healthy controls(P < 0.01). Using a cutoff level of 0.374 ×103 copies/ml,the serum levels of let-7c had a sensitivity of 87.5% and a specificity of 78.9% for distinguishingBC patients from healthy controls with an area under the curve ROC of 0.848;95% confidence interval(CI): 0.785–0.911. Furthermore, our results showed the level of let-7c in the premenopausal patients was obviously higher than that in the postmenopausalpatients(P < 0.05), supporting that postmenopausal status may affect the level of ***, no significant differences of let-7c levels were found between the ER(or PR)-positiveand-negative patients.[Conclusions] This study supports that let-7c as a novel and valuable biomarker for the diagnosisof BC.

Adjusting the structure and composition of active sites is a highly effective method for activating linear ***, precise control of interfacial chemistry within molecular-scale environments presents a significant challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. In our study, we present symmetry-broken Mo-O-Co triple-atom active sites within the hybrid zeolite imidazole framework HZIF-CoMo. These sites disrupt the electronic balance and create a weak built-in electric field, thus promoting photocatalytic CO2reduction. The CO yield over HZIF-CoMo is improved to 3.1 mmol g-1h-1, which is over four times higher than the parent cobalt-imidazole framework MAF-6-Co. Both experimental and theoretical studies indicate that electronic modulation through the symmetry-breaking Mo-O-Co moiety acts as an organizing knob to accelerate charge separation and result in more carriers participating in the catalytic reaction. This work provides important insights into optimizing site-related electronic structures for targeted photocatalytic reactions.

石墨烯作为二维固体润滑材料,其超滑特性不仅是物理作用结果,其化学键结构机制下的摩擦化学现象,是深入理解石墨烯摩擦性能的关键.本文采用分子动力学(MD)方法构建了多重层数石墨烯增强不同粗糙形貌的金属基底模型,实现了其与金刚石尖端滑动过程的动态分析,揭示了考虑尖端与石墨烯之间存在界面键时石墨烯层的理化耦合作用下的磨损机理.研究结果表明:当考虑金刚石尖端与石墨烯之间化学键合时,石墨烯发生磨损破裂的临界载荷相对于不考虑界面化学键时的值减小,这是由于界面键的形成会剥离石墨烯导致石墨烯断裂所致;金属基底的粗糙度也是决定石墨烯发生磨损破裂时临界载荷的重要因素之一,当粗糙度增大,临界载荷减小,同时通过增加石墨烯层的层数(增韧)来提高石墨烯发生磨损破裂失效的临界载荷.
