Eusocial insects display a caste system in which different castes are morpho-logically and physiologically specialized for different *** studies have revealed that epigenetic modifications,including DNA methylation and histone modification,me-diate caste determination and differentiation,longevity,and polyethism in eusocial *** there has been a growing interest in the relationship between epigenetic mech-anisms and phenotypic plasticity in termites,there is ltte information about differential expression levels among castes and expression sites for these genes in *** we show royaltissuc-specific expression of epigenetic modification genes in the termite Reticulitermes *** RNA-seq,we identified 74 genes,including three DNA methyltransferases,seven sirtuins,48 Trithorax group proteins,and 16 Polycomb group *** these genes,15 showed king-specific expression,and 52 showed age-dependent differential expression in kings and *** real-time PCR revealed that DNA methyltransferase 3 is expressed specifically in the king's testis and fat body,whereas some histone modification genes are remarkably expressed in the king's testis and queen's *** findings imply that epigenetic modification plays important roles in the gamete production process in termite kings and queens.

Auditory symptoms and psychological characteristics in adults with auditory processing disorders

Most adults with auditory processing disorder(APD) often have trouble at work. It is possible that these listening problems in adults with APD influence their mental health. Thus, we have to take the subject's personality and mental status into consideration when supporting subjects with APD. However, studies on APD in adults are comparatively rare. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationships between the results of auditory tests, APD symptoms, and psychological status in subjects with APD. This study included 22 adults who complained of listening problems in everyday life, and they underwent auditory processing tests and were questioned regarding their psychological *** the results of the auditory processing tests, all subjects showed low scores on at least one test; therefore, they were suspected of having APD. Especially, the scores were low on the auditory memory test. Furthermore, subjects with APD show relatively similar psychological characteristics to each other. However, there was no significant relationship between the results of the auditory processing tests and psychological *** have to take notice of a subject's psychological state when they perceive their listening difficulties as a large-scale problem and feel anxious as a result. For this purpose, we should take psychological characteristics into consideration at the time of the medical examination interview before audio-psychological testing.

To the Editor:Obstructive jaundice due to unresectable malignant hilar obstruction can be treated by deployment of bilateral uncovered self-expandable metal stents(UCSEMSs),which enable longer stent patency to be obtained compared with multiple plastic stents[1-3].However,re-intervention is needed if obstructive jaundice occurs after bilateral UCSEMS *** re-intervention procedures,insertion of the stent delivery system across the mesh of a UCSEMS and into the bile duct can be challenging.A novel drill dilator has recently become available in Japan(Tornus ES;Asahi Intecc,Nagoya,Japan)(Fig.1)[4].The tract is easily dilated using a clockwise *** herein describe a successful re-intervention using this device for a patient with occluded bilateral UCSEMSs.

Disruption of the TWEAk/Fn14 pathway prevents 5-fluorouracil-induced diarrhea in mice

AIM To clarify the roles of TWEAk and its receptor Fn14 in 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)-induced *** Diarrhea was induced in wild-type(WT), Fn14 knockout(kO), and IL-13 receptor(IL-13R)α1 kO BALB/c mice using a single injection of 5-FU. Histological analysis, cytokine analysis, and flow cytometry was performed on ileal tissues and cells. Murine colon carcinomabearing mice were co-treated with an anti-TWEAk antibody and 5-FU. Embryonic fibroblast response to cytokines was also ***5-FU induced high Fn14 expression in epithelial cells. The severity of 5-FU-induced diarrhea was lower in Fn14 kO mice compared with WT mice. Administration of anti-TWEAk antibody reduced 5-FU-induced diarrhea without affecting the antitumor effects of 5-FU in vivo. 5-FU-induced expression of IL-13, IL-17 A, TNF-α, and IFN-γ in the ileum was Fn14 dependent. The severity of 5-FU-induced diarrhea was lower in IL-13Rα1 kO mice, indicating major role for IL-13 signaling via IL-13Rα1 in pathogenesis. We found that IL-13Rα2, an IL-13 neutralizing/cell protective receptor, was strongly induced by IL-33 in vitro and in vivo. IL-13Rα2 was upregulated in the ileum of 5-FU-treated Fn14 kO mice. Thus, the deletion of Fn14 upregulated IL-13Rα2 expression, which reduced IL-13 expression and activity. CONCLUSION Disruption of the TWEAk/Fn14 pathway affects several interconnected pathways, including those associated with IL-13, IL-33, and IL-13Rα2, to attenuate 5-FUinduced intestinal side effects.

Influence of Warm Oxide Layer on Wettability and Contact Angle for Heat Transport Devices

Recently, high heat density has become a problem in electronic devices. Therefore, high heat-transfer efficiency is required in copper heat exchangers. Improvement ofwettability is reported to improve the heat-transfer efficiency. In previous studies, copper oxide layer improves the wettability. In this study, we focus on a copper oxide layer produced under warm conditions （from 200 to 300 ℃）, which are suitable oxidation conditions for improving wettability. Experimental results showed that the surface of the specimens was covered by the oxidation layer and took on a black color. Furthermore, the wettability was improved by the warm copper oxide layer. While, the surface roughness was approximately constant to each warm oxidized specimen. Whereat, the warm oxide layer was observed by SEM （sanning electron microscope）. The results from SEM observations showed that the warm copper oxide layer consisted of stacks and combinations of nanoscopic warm oxidation particles. Thus, the warm oxidation layer has nanoscopic surface asperities. It is seemed that these nanoscopic asperities improved the wettability.

Infrasound observations at Syowa Station,East Antarctica:Implications for detecting the surface environmental variations in the polar regions

Characteristic infrasound waves observed at Antarctic stations demonstrate physical interaction involving environmental changes in the Antarctic continent and the surrounding oceans. A Chaparraltype infrasound sensor was installed at Syowa Station （SYO; 39°E, 69°S）, East Antarctica, as one of the projects of the International Polar Year （IPY2007-2008）. Data continuously recorded during the three seasons in 2008-2010 clearly indicate a contamination of the background oceanic signals （microbaroms） with peaks between 4 and 10 s observed during a whole season. The peak amplitudes of the microbaroms have relatively lower values during austral winters, caused by a larger amount of sea-ice extending around the Lutzow-Holm Bay near SYO, with decreasing ocean wave loading effects. Micro- baroms measurements are useful tool for characterizing ocean wave climate, complementing other oceanographic and geophysical data. A continuous monitoring by infrasound sensors in the Antarctic firmly contributes to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty （CTBT） in the southern high latitude, together with the Pan-Antarctic Observations System （PAntOS） under the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research （SCAR）. Detailed measurements of the infrasound waves in Antarctica, consequently, could be a new proxy for monitoring regional environmental change as well as the temporal climate variations in the polar regions.

Synthesis of CuInS_2 nanocrystals and their structural transformation triggered by ligand exchange

Chalcopyrite-type CuInS2 NCs was synthesized by the hot-soap method. Mixed solutions, CuI and InCl3 dissolved in the mixture of the tri-octylphosphite and 1-octadecene and the sulfur dissolved in tri-phenylphosphite, were used as source solutions; the hexadecylamine was additionally mixed as a surfactant before the reaction. It was observed that the product CuInS2 NCs structurally transformed from the chalcopyrite(CP)-or zincblende(ZB)-to the wurtzite(WZ)-type depending on the amount of the surfactant and a storage time after the surfactant addition. Very weak photoluminescence in the near-infrared region was observed for the CP-or ZB-type NCs. This band was attributable to the electronhole recombination via defect levels. No photoluminescence was detected for the wurtzite-type NCs.

Length-Sorted Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes for High-Mobility Thin Film Transistors

We have developed a process for chemical purification of carbon nanotubes for solution-processable thin-film transistors （TFTs） having high mobility. Films of the purified carbon nanotubes fabricated by simple drop coating showed carrier mobilities as high as 164 cm2V-1s -1 normalized transconductances of 0.78 Sm-1 and on/off current ratios of 10^6. Such high performance requires the preparation of a suspension of micrometer-long and highly purified semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs）. Our purification process includes length and electronic-type selective trapping of SWCNTs using recycling gel filtration with a mixture of surfactants. The results provide an important milestone toward printed high-speed and large-area electronics with roll-to-roll and ink-jet device fabrication.

AIM： To evaluate the safety of unsedated transnasal small-caliber esophagogastroduodenoscopy （EGD） for elderly and critically ill bedridden patients. METHODS： One prospective randomized comparative study and one crossover comparative study between transnasal small-caliber EGD and transoral conventional EGD was done （Study 1）. For the comparative study, we enrolled 240 elderly patients aged 〉 65 years old. For the crossover analysis, we enrolled 30 bedridden patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy （PEG）（Study 2）, We evaluated cardiopulmonary effects by measuring arterial oxygen saturation （SpO2） and calculating the rate-pressure product （RPP）（pulse rate x systolic blood pressure/100） at baseline, 2 and 5 min after endoscopic intubation in Study 1. To assess the risk for endoscopy-related aspiration pneumonia during EGD, we also measured blood leukocyte counts and serum C-reactive protein （CRP） levels before and 3 d after EGD in Study 2. RESULTS： In Study 1, we observed significant decreases in SpO2 during conventional transoral EGD, but not during transnasal small-caliber EGD （0.24% vs -0.24% after 2 min, and 0.18% vs -0.29% after 5 min, P = 0.034, P = 0.044）. Significant differences of the RPP were not found between conventional transoral and transnasal small-caliber EGD. In Study 2, crossover analysis showed statistically significant increases of the RPP at 2 min after intubation and the end of endoscopy （26.8 and 34.6 vs 3.1 and 15.2, P = 0.044, P = 0.046）, and decreases of SpO2 （-0.8% vs -0.1%, P = 0.042） during EGD with transoral conventional in comparison with transnasal small-caliber endoscopy. Thus, for bedridden patients with PEG feeding, who were examined in the supine position, transoral conventional EGD more severely suppressed cardiopulmonary function than transnasal small-caliber EGD.
