Exploration behavior of group-in-a-box layouts

To improve visualization,it is necessary to optimize the design by analyzing the behavior of users as well as improving the evaluation index of the computational experiment and the task performance(e.g.,the correct answer rate and completion time)in the user *** various studies have investigated the influence of user behavior on the evaluation of visualization,majority of these studies focused on simple visualization tasks.A simple task does not indicate a simple visualization comprising a few visualization elements but a task in which the information obtained from visualization is the only clue for completing the ***,a few studies have targeted complicated tasks in which multiple information obtained from visualization is considered to be a clue for completing the task regardless of the number of elements that are contained in the ***,in this study,we investigated the behavior of the participants who have performed complicated *** selected two types of group-in-a-box(GIB)layouts,which can be considered to be a complicated visualization method,as the target of the user *** the user experiment,participants were asked to perform an exploration task specific to GIB layouts;which group has the maximum number of intra-edges?We also collected the eye-tracking data in addition to task *** results showed that the correct answer rate is considerably affected by the visualization factor;whether the correct answer,the box with maximum number of intra-edges,is the box with the largest ***,an analysis of the collected eye-tracking data revealed that this visualization factor affected the exploration behavior of the participants;however,it did not affect the location at which the participants were focused *** obtained results indicated that the visualization elements that were not considered by the visualization designer can influence the task of extracting information from the ***

Laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery for gastric tumors: Perspective for actual practice and oncological benefits

Laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery(LECS) is a surgical technique that combines laparoscopic partial gastrectomy and endoscopic submucosal dissection. LECS requires close collaboration between skilled laparoscopic surgeons and experienced endoscopists. For successful LECS, experience alone is not sufficient. Instead, familiarity with the characteristics of both laparoscopic surgery and endoscopic intervention is necessary to overcome various technical problems. LECS was developed mainly as a treatment for gastric submucosal tumors without epithelial lesions, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs). Local gastric wall dissection without lymphadenectomy is adequate for the treatment of gastric GISTs. Compared with conventional simple wedge resection with a linear stapler, LECS can provide both optimal surgical margins and oncological benefit that result in functional preservation of the residual stomach. As technical characteristics, however, classic LECS involves intentional opening of the gastric wall, resulting in a risk of tumor dissemination with contamination by gastric juice. Therefore, several modified LECS techniques have been developed to av-oid even subtle tumor exposure. Furthermore, LECS for early gastric cancer has been attempted according tothe concept of sentinel lymph node dissection. LECS is a prospective treatment for GISTs and might become a future therapeutic option even for early gastric cancer. Interventional endoscopists and laparoscopic surgeons collaboratively explore curative resection. Simultaneous intraluminal approach with endoscopy allows surgeons to optimizes the resection area. LECS, not simple wedge resection, achieves minimally invasive treatment and allows for oncologically precise resection. We herein present detailed tips and pitfalls of LECS and discuss various technical considerations.

Transferring pose and augmenting background for deep humanimage parsing and its applications

Parsing of human images is a fundamental task for determining semantic parts such as the face,arms, and legs, as well as a hat or a dress. Recent deep-learning-based methods have achieved significant improvements, but collecting training datasets with pixel-wise annotations is labor-intensive. In this paper,we propose two solutions to cope with limited ***, to handle various poses, we incorporate a pose estimation network into an end-to-end humanimage parsing network, in order to transfer common features across the domains. The pose estimation network can be trained using rich datasets and can feed valuable features to the human-image parsing network. Secondly, to handle complicated backgrounds,we increase the variation in image backgrounds automatically by replacing the original backgrounds of human images with others obtained from large-scale scenery image datasets. Individually, each solution is versatile and beneficial to human-image parsing, while their combination yields further improvement. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through comparisons and various applications such as garment recoloring, garment texture transfer, and visualization for fashion analysis.

On-line enrichment and determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmospheric particulates using high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence as detector

Seven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in atmospheric particulates were determinated by high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） with fluorescence detector using direction injection and an on-line enrichment trap column. The method simplified the sample pretreatment, saved time and increased the efficiency. With the on-line trap column, PAHs were separated availably even underground injecting 1.0 ml sample with relatively high column efficiency. The recoveries of the seven PAHs were from 85% to 120% for spiked atmospheric particulate sample. The limit of detection was 15.3-39.6 ng/L （S/N=3.3）. There were good linear correlations between the peak areas and concentrations of the seven kinds of PAHs in the range of 1-50 ng/ml with the correlation coefficients over 0.9970. Furthermore, it also indicated that the method is available to determine PAHs in atmospheric particulates well.

Acquiring non-parametric scattering phase function from a single image

Acquiring accurate scattering properties is important for rendering translucent materials. In particular, the phase function, which determines the distribution of scattering directions, plays a significant role in the appearance of a material. We propose a distinctive scattering theory that approximates the effect of single scattering to acquire the non-parametric phase function from a single image. Furthermore, in various experiments, we measured the phase functions from several real diluted media and rendered images of these materials to evaluate the effectiveness of our theory.

Sediment organic matter source estimation and ecological classification in the semi-enclosed Batan Bay Estuary, Philippines

The large organic matter flow in tropical coastal areas is recognized as an important process in the global carbon(C) ***,the nature of organic matter flow in semi-enclosed tropical estuaries remains unclear due to the various environmental processes(tidal change,river flow,waves from the sea,and internal circulation) and organic matter sources ***,sediment organic matter(SOM) sources,and their distribution pattern,are key to understanding ecosystem material *** research in the Batan Bay Estuary,Philippines,a semi-enclosed estuary under large mangrove deforestation,was conducted to determine ecosystem properties through analysis of C and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and environmental ***,we determined that mangrove litter,microphytobenthos,and phytoplankton are the main SOM sources in the Batan Bay ***,the estuary was classified into three ecological zones(the Bay zone,Back-barrier zone,and River zone).In addition,we estimated SOM source ratios using the Stable Isotope Analysis in R package and determined different organic matter sources in different *** high ratios of mangrove litter as SOM indicate that a large amount of terrestrial plant organic matter remains despite the heavy mangrove deforestation that has occurred since the 1980 s,and that the Back-barrier zone consists of a different type of ecosystem that promotes accumulation of C from mangrove litter and micro phytobenthos.

Debris flows form deposits when they reach an alluvial fan until they eventually ***,houses located in the alluvial fan might affect the debris flow flooding and deposition *** previous studies have considered the effects of houses on debris flow flooding and *** study conducted model experiments and numerical simulations using the kanako2D debris flow simulator to determine the influence of houses on debris flow flooding and *** model experiments showed that when houses are present,the debris flow spreads widely in the cross direction immediately upstream of the houses,especially when the flow discharge is large or the grain size is *** located in the alluvial fan also influence the deposition *** presence of houses led to flooding and deposition damage in some places and reduced the damage in *** simulation also demonstrated the influence of *** the model experiment and the simulation showed that houses change the flooding and deposition areas.

Recording the direct surgeon’s view with an operating microscopic view improves microscopic ophthalmic surgery training

AIM:To establish a recording system with a direct view of the surgeon to supplement video recording under an operating microscope,which lacks information on the movement and position of the surgeon’s hands,and to facilitate the reproduction of a skilled surgeon’s technique by a surgeon in ***:A small camera was attached to the operating microscope with a custom *** surgeon’s view and direct surgeon’s view through this new camera were recorded in the surgical recording *** movies were synchronized and analyzed how do surgeons handle the ***:A small camera attached to the operating microscope allowed the surgeon’s hands motion to be recorded without interfering with the surgeon’s *** surgeons used different methods to manipulate the ultrasound handpiece and the irrigation/aspiration *** in the simple paracentesis procedure,different surgeons used different ***-in-training were able to identify and improve their weaknesses by watching synchronized movies of their hand motions and microscopic ***:Simultaneous recording the surgical field out of the operating microscopic view by a small camera set on the microscope is comprehensive and improves surgeons-in-training understanding and learning surgeries.

A sustainable way of agricultural livelihood:edible bird’s nests in Indonesia

Edible birds’nests(EBNs)have traditionally been produced in Southeast *** farmers construct buildings for swiftlets and harvest their *** farming does not directly degrade forest resources and is therefore considered a sustainable means of production,whereas the expansion of other agricultural activities often relies on the degradation of natural *** study examines the relationship between natural resources and agricultural livelihoods,focusing on Indonesian EBN *** survey data that we collected in 2017,combined with satellite information on the extent of the forest in Central kalimantan,Indonesia,we measured production efficiency and identified the natural and social factors that enhance production *** results show that a forest extent ranging between 2,000 and 6,000 meters from nesting building is positively associated with the production efficiency of EBN farming,perhaps because extensive forest could help swiftlets to collect food and build ***,while EBN farming is a sustainable and profitable option,the initial costs of constructing buildings to house swiftlets may deter farmers from participating in the process.
