Supramolecular liquid crystals(SLCs)are attractive materials for fabricating devices with new optoelectronic *** SLCs are made from hydrogen-bonded ***,these mesogens suffer from high melting points,and the types of formable aggregates are limited owing to the directionality of the hydro-gen ***,to fabricate non-hydrogen-bonded SLCs,we hypothesized that the introduction of tertiary amide groups into calamitic molecules would be advantageous because they have an L-shaped structure with N-or C-alkyl side chains not aligned along the long axis and theﬂexibility to undergo cis–trans *** this study,we developed a novel non-hydrogen-bonded SLC by assembling an L-shaped dimer composed of calamitic molecules(phenyltolanes)with tertiary amides at their *** molecules exhibited a smectic B *** phase tran-sition temperature of the SLCs from crystal to liquid crystal phase was low despite the longπ-conjugated ***-angle X-ray diffraction and variable-temperature Fourier-transform infrared measurements revealed dimer formation by weak inter-molecular interactions,that is,the molecular recognition of L-shaped molecules,and mobility of the alkyl groups attached to amide driven by cis–trans isomerization in the liquid crystal ***,cis–trans isomerization of tertiary amides contributed enormously to the formation and lower clearing points of this *** developed method can be used not only to develop non-hydrogen-bonded SLCs but also to develop novel soft matter with controlled properties by incorporating the SLCs,as the aggregates can be controlled to impart desired functionalities.

Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetics of E3030, a Novel Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor α/γDual Agonist, in Healthy Japanese Male Subjects

Objective: The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the safety of single oral dose E3030 in healthy Japanese male subjects, and to evaluate pharmacokinetics after single oral dose E3030 and food effect on pharmacokinetic profiles. Methods: This study was conducted in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, ascending single-dose study in 56 healthy Japanese male subjects. Subjects were orally administered E3030 (0.5-40 mg) or placebo. Results: Six of 42 (14%) subjects’ administered E3030 experienced adverse events;however, all adverse events were mild and transient, and there was no dose-dependent increase in any adverse event. Plasma samples were collected over 96 hours after dosing. After administration in the fasted state, Cmax of E3030 was achieved between 1.00 and 1.75 hours, indicating rapid absorption. Both Cmax and AUC were dose-proportional in the range of 0.5 to 40 mg. The average range of elimination half-life was 18.4-23.8 hr. CL/F and Vz/F also remained nearly constant regardless of dose levels. In addition, food effect was exploratorily evaluated in five subjects of administered E3030 (10 mg) in both fasted and fed states. The fed/fasted ratios for the geometric mean of the Cmax and AUC were 0.803 and 0.913, respectively. Conclusion: E3030 was safe and well tolerated at single doses up to 40 mg. The pharmacokinetic profile showed good linearity, and food effect on pharmacokinetics of E3030 was not significant.

The Distribution of the Oceanic Sea Skaters, Halobatesinside and outside the Kuroshio

The purpose of this study was to clarify the distribution of oceanic Halobates in the area of the Kuroshio flowing near the southern shore in the direction of 100° - 120°, and also to compare the population density of Halobates between the area within or outside the area of the Kuroshio and also among seasons. This study was carried out during 8 cruises by R/V TANSEIMARU. The Kuroshio area south of the southern Japan coast (30°00'N - 35°00'N, 130°25'E - 141°04'E) was dominated by H. sericeus, and the averaged population-density of this species was significantly higher inside the Kuroshio than outside this current. On the Kuroshio, H. sericeus was dominant with the population density of 16,396.4 km-2 ± 66,138.4 [26] (Mean ± SD [n]), whereas the density of H. germanus was 8,581.9 km-2 ± 24,443.2 [26]. The two oceanic sea skaters, H. sericeusand H. germanus showed significant seasonal variation in the population density, with significantly higher density in October than other months, whereas there was no such significant October peak in the cosmopolitan oceanic sea skater, H. micans. The results of this study may suggest that H. sericeus could use the Kuroshio as a transportation tool to distribute a wide latitude area of from 10°N to 40°N in the western tropical, subtropical and temperate area in the Pacific Ocean.

Recently, traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers have been increasing. It is thought that the reasons of accidents are functions such as decline of eyesight, cognition and physical strength caused by aging. In order to assist safe driving for elderly drivers, it is necessary to sufficiently understand any possible relationship of various senior drivers’ cognition, physical strength and driving behavior. In this paper relationship of elderly driver’s cognition, physical strength and driving behaviors were analyzed using the result of driving instructions on urban road by driving school instructors.

Alveolar macrophage functions and DNA damage in cigarette smoke-exposed mice

Alveolar macrophages (AM) are known to play an essential role in lung defense through their ability to remove the foreign matters reaching the lung alveoli. Cigarette smoke (CS) is a critical risk factor for many lung diseases. CS is inhaled into the lung by respiretion and affects AM. It has been previously reported that CS induces inhibition of cytokine production, cell surface receptor expression and antigen presentation in AM. However, the relationship of immune suppression and DNA damage caused by CS in AM is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we investigated AM immune function and DNA damage in CS-exposed mice. Mice were exposed to CS of 20 cigarettes/day during 10 days using a HambrugⅡsmoking machine. After exposure, AM were obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage. The number of AM was significantly increased in CS-exposed mice compared with non-CS-exposed mice. Phagocytic activity of AM was significantly inhibited by CS exposure. Percentage of CD11b-, CD14-, Toll-like receptor (TLR)2- or TLR4-positive cells was significantly decreased in CS-exposed mice compared with non-CS-exposed mice. Interleukin-1β mRNA expression in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated AM was significantly inhibited by CS exposure. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) (, H2O2) production of AM was significantly increased, and DNA damage was induced by CS exposure. These results suggest that impaired immune functions by CS exposure may be related to DNA damage via excessive ROS induced by CS. These alterations of AM caused by CS could be associated with infection and development of pulmonary diseases.

AIM: To investigate factors that accurately predict hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) development after antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis C(CHC) patients. METHODS: CHC patients who received pegylated interferon and ribavirin were enrolled in this cohort study that investigated the ability of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) to predict HCC development after interferon(IFN) therapy. RESULTS: Of 1255 patients enrolled, 665 developed sustained virological response(SVR) during mean follow-up period of 5.4 years. HCC was occurred in 89 patients, and 20 SVR patients were included. Proportional hazard models showed that HCC occurred in SVR patients showing AFP ≥ 5 ng/m L before therapy and in non-SVR patients showing AFP ≥ 5 ng/m L before and 1 year after therapy besides older age, and low platelet counts. SVR patients showing AFP ≥ 5 ng/m L before therapy and no decrease in AFP to < 5 ng/m L 1 year after therapy had significantly higher HCC incidence than non-SVR patients showing AFP ≥ 5 ng/m L before therapy and decreased AFP(P = 0.043). AFP ≥ 5 ng/m L before therapy was significantly associated with low platelet counts and high values of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) in stepwise logistic regression analysis. After age, gender, platelet count, and ALT was matched by propensity score, significantly lower HCC incidence was shown in SVR patients showing AFP < 5 ng/m L before therapy than in those showing AFP ≥ 5 ng/m ***: The criteria of AFP < 5 ng/m L before and 1 year after IFN therapy is a benefical predictor for HCC development in CHC patients.
