The offshore turbine system was installed on a floating platform moored in Hakata Bay, offshore of Fukuoka, Japan. An identical turbine system was also installed at the adjacent waterfront. The separation of the two turbines was 3.7 km. Wind flow tends to be more stable and the average wind speed is often larger in offshore areas than adjacent land areas at typical wind turbine hub height. This study focused on the wind condition of a nearshore area to clarify the advantages of nearshore wind farming. Prior to field experiment, wind conditions were predicted by using numerical simulation. It is useful for estimating topographical effect in nearshore areas. Next, field verification test was done by directly comparing wind data obtained from the identical wind turbine systems installed at an offshore location and the adjacent waterfront over the same extended period. The corresponding power output of these turbines was also compared. The data set exhibits 23% larger annual average wind speed at the offshore location and smaller turbulent intensity, resulting doubled annual power production.

Analysis of Hospital Characteristics Affecting the Choice of Management Strategy Types: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Private Hospitals in Japan

The hospital environment in Japan has changed drastically lately. Its unpredictability has increased the need for hospitals to select management strategies to clarify their course. However, research on Japanese hospitals’ management strategies has only recently begun with too few studies in this area. Hence, this study clarifies the management strategies of Japanese private hospitals. It explores the hospital characteristics that affect strategy selection. A questionnaire was mailed to 5682 private medical institutions in 2013, and 459 responses with no missing data were used for analysis. Factor analysis yielded four factors: “bed conversion and downsizing (Factor 1),” “diversification of medical and nursing care (Factor 2),” “expansion in business scale (Factor 3),” and “expansion of income from non-insured medical care (Factor 4)”. Logistic regression analysis revealed that Year Founded (before 1965), Hospital Location (municipalities with populations smaller than 100,000), Hospital Type (psychiatric hospitals and mixed-care hospital), and Hospital Income and Expenditure (deficit) had significant positive impacts on the choice of Factor 1. For Factor 2, Hospital Type (sanatorium ward and mixed-care hospitals) and Hospital Income and Expenditure (constant surplus) had positive impacts. For Factor 3, Hospital Type (general hospital) and Bed Counts (more than 200) had positive impacts. For Factor4, Hospital Type (general hospital) had positive impacts. In other words, older hospitals, hospitals in rural areas, psychiatric hospitals, mixed-care hospitals, and hospitals with deficits tended to choose bed conversion and downsizing. Sanatorium ward hospitals, mixed-care hospitals, and hospitals with a constant surplus tended to choose diversification of medical and nursing care. Symptoms of Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease: A Comparative Study between Elderly and Younger Patients in Japan

The difference in gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms between elderly and younger GERD patients has not been fully studied. Our aim was to examine if there was any difference in the degree of GERD symptoms between elderly and younger patients with reflux esophagitis. Patients who were diagnosed by endoscopic examination as having reflux esophagitis and who answered the questionnaire on the frequency scale for the symptoms of GERD (FSSG) were included. Elderly and younger adult patients were defined as patients aged 65 and over or less than 65, respectively. 596 subjects were included. 184 subjects (mean 71.1 years;114 males) were classified into the Elderly group, and 412 subjects (mean 51.2 years;307 males) into the Younger group. The mean FSSG score of the Elderly and Younger groups was 6.7 and 8.4, respectively (p = 0.0024). Among those with severe esophagitis, the mean FSSG score of the Elderly and Younger groups was 8.5 and 8.7, respectively (p = 0.58). Although elderly patients tended to have less degree of GERD symptoms than younger patients, these findings suggest that there may be no significant age-related difference in complaints of GERD symptoms among severe reflux esophagitis patients.

Characterization of Corrinoid Compounds in the Edible Cyanobacterium <i>Nostoc flagelliforme</i>the Hair Vegetable

Vitamin B12 contents in the edible cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme, also known as hair vegetable, were assayed using a microbiological method. We detected high vitamin B12 contents in samples of naturally grown cells (109.2 ± 18.5 μg/100g dry weight) and cultured cells (120.2 ± 53.6 μg/100g dry weight). However, commercially available hair vegetable samples, which comprised fake substitutes and Nostoc, had variable contents (4.8 - 101.6 μg/100g dry weight) because concomitant fake items contain very low vitamin B12 contents. To evaluate whether natural and cultured N. flagelliforme samples contained vitamin B12 or pseudovitamin B12, corrinoid compounds were purified and identified as pseudovitamin B12 (approximately 72%) and vitamin B12 (approximately 28%) using silica gel 60 TLC bioautography and LC/MS. The results suggested that N. flagelliforme contains substantial amounts of pseudovitamin B12, which is inactive in humans.

Correlation between Non-Alcoholic Beverage Consumption and Alcohol Drinking Behavior among Japanese Youths

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the consumption of non-alcoholic beverages (such as non-alcoholic beer, non-alcoholic cocktails, and non-alcoholic wine) and alcohol drinking behavior among Japanese youths. Data from the Japan Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2011 were analyzed. The study subjects were 9775 high school students (5026 males and 4749 females) randomly selected from the 10th to the 12th grade in 102 high schools throughout Japan. The results indicated that the percentage of youths who had consumed non-alcoholic beverages was 25.8% among males (11.5%: “one time”;14.3%: “two or more times”) and 26.1% among females (12.2%: “one time”;13.9%: “two or more times”), which suggested that at least one in four Japanese high school students had consumed non-alcoholic beverages. Those students that had consumed non-alcoholic beverages were at a significantly higher risk for alcohol-related behaviors, including “ever drank alcohol”, “current alcohol use”, “current frequent alcohol use”, and “chugging”, when compared with students who had never consumed non-alcoholic beverages. The risk for alcohol-related behaviors was higher for students who had consumed non-alcoholic beverages two or more times than for those who had consumed them one time. Specifically, the odds ratio for “ever drank alcohol” in the “one time” group was 5.16 (95% CI: 4.22 - 6.30) for males and 4.27 (95% CI: 3.53 - 5.16) for females, while it was markedly high for those in the “two or more times” group, with males at 9.78 (95% CI: 7.88 - 12.14) and females at 7.59 (95% CI: 6.20 - 9.29). The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to continuously ascertain the prevalence of non-alcoholic beverage consumption among Japanese youths. In addition, alcohol drinking prevention in youths requires attention be paid not only to their consumption of alcoholic beverages, but also to their consumption of non-alcoholic beverages.

Relationships of youth risk behaviors with norm-consciousness and resilience among Japanese high school students

The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of norm-consciousness and resilience on the prevention of youth risk behaviors among Japanese high school students. Data of a national survey, Japan Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2011, was used for this analysis. The subjects were 9778 students (5027 males, 4751 females) in grades 10-12 in 102 schools randomly selected from among high schools throughout Japan. When multiple regression analysis was carried out using four subdomains of norm-consciousness and three subdomains of resilience as the independent variables and nine risk behaviors as the dependent variables, the subdomains of norm-consciousness showed significant positive standardized partial regression coefficients for eight risk behaviors for both males and females. In particular, “current alcohol use” and “ever had sexual intercourse” showed the largest standardized partial regression coefficients for the norm-consciousness in school, and “current cigarette use” showed that for the norm-consciousness in community. The subdomains of resilience showed significant positive standardized partial regression coefficients for five risk behaviors for males and for six those for females. The results of this study suggest that the norm-consciousness is an important protective factor to comprehensively prevent risk behaviors among Japanese adolescents. It is expected to be effective to enhance the norm-consciousness particularly in school and community. In addition, resilience should also be emphasized as a factor to prevent specific risk behaviors.

BACKGROUND Studies have shown that covered self-expandable metallic stents(CSEMS)with a low axial forces after placement can cause early recurrent biliary obstruction(RBO)due to precipitating sludge *** To ascertain whether the angle of CSEMS after placement is a risk factor for RBO in unresectable distal malignant biliary obstruction(MBO).METHODS Between January 2010 and March 2019,261 consecutive patients underwent selfexpandable metallic stent insertion by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography at our facility,and 87 patients were included in this *** evaluated the risk factors for RBO,including the angle of CSEMS after placement as the primary *** measured the obtuse angle of CSEMS after placement on an abdominal radiograph using the SYNAPSE PACS *** also evaluated technical and functional success,adverse events,time to RBO(TRBO),non-RBO rate,survival time,cause of RBO,and reintervention procedure as secondary *** We divided the patients into two cohorts based on the presence or absence of *** angle of CSEMS after placement(per 1°and per 10°)was evaluated using the multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis,which was an independent risk factor for RBO in unresectable distal MBO[hazard ratio,0.97 and 0.71;95%confidence interval(CI):0.94-0.99 and 0.54-0.92;P=0.01 and 0.01,respectively].For early diagnosis of RBO,the cut-off value of the angle of CSEMS after placement using the receiver operating characteristic curve was 130°[sensitivity,50.0%;specificity 85.5%;area under the curve 0.70(95%CI:0.57-0.84)].TRBO in the<130°angle group was significantly shorter than that in the≥130°angle group(P<0.01).CONCLUSION This study suggests that the angle of the CSEMS after placement for unresectable distal MBO is a risk factor for *** novel results provide pertinent information for future stent management.
