Epidemiology and microbiology of nosocomial bloodstream infections: analysis of 482 cases from a retrospective surveillance study

In many traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） hospitals, most patients are elderly with chronic diseases. Nosocomial bloodstream infections （nBSIs） are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. A retrospective sur- veillance study was performed to examine the epidemiology and microbiology of nBSIs in a TCM hospital from 2009 to 2011. A total of 482 patients with nBSIs were included in the study period. The incidence rate was 5.7/1000 admissions Escherichia coli （25.5%） was the most common Gram-negative and coagulase-negative staphylococcus （CONS）（14.1%） was the most common Gram-positive organism isolated. One-third of the E. coli and Klebsie/la pneumoniae isolated from the nBSIs were the third-generation cephalosporin-resistant. Half of the Acinetobacter species isolates were resistant to imipenem. Of all the CoNS isolates, 90.7% were resistant to methicillin. Carbapenems and glyco- peptide were the most frequently used for nBSI therapy. Only about one-third of patients （157/482） received appro- priate empirical therapy. Septic shock, hemodialysis, Pitt bacteremia score 〉4, urinary tract infection, and appropriate empirical therapy were most strongly associated with 28-d mortality. The incidence of nBSIs was low in the TCM hospital but the proportion of nBSIs due to antibiotic-resistant organisms was high. A high Pitt bacteremia score was one of the most important risk factors for mortality in nBSIs. Therefore, the implementation of appropriate empirical therapy is crucial to improve the clinical outcome of nBSIs.

“One stone, two birds”: Salt template enabling porosity engineering and single metal atom coordinating toward high-performance zinc-ion capacitors

Zinc-ion hybrid capacitors （ZIHCs） have received increasing attention as energy storage devices owing to their low cost,high safety,and environmental ***,their progress has been hampered by low energy and power density,as well as unsatisfactory long-cycle stability,mainly due to the lack of suitable electrode *** this context,we have developed manganese single atoms implanted in nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets （MnSAs/NCNs） using a metal salt template method as cathodes for *** metal salt serves a dual purpose in the synthesis process:It facilitates the uniform dispersion of Mn atoms within the carbon matrix and acts as an activating agent to create the porous *** applied in ZIHCs,the MnSAs/NCNs electrode demonstrates exceptional performance,including a high capacity of 203 m Ah g-1,an energy density of 138 Wh kg-1at 68 W kg-1,and excellent cycle stability with 91%retention over 10,000 *** calculations indicate that the introduced Mn atoms modulate the local charge distribution of carbon materials,thereby improving the electrochemical *** work demonstrates the significant potential of carbon materials with metal atoms in zinc-ion hybrid capacitors,not only in enhancing electrochemical performance but also in providing new insights and methods for developing high-performance energy storage devices.

Recent advances in the research for the homolog of breast cancer associated gene AtROW1 in higher plants

BARD1(BRCA1 associated RING domain protein 1), as an important animal tumor suppressor gene associated with many kinds of cancers, has been intensively studied for decades. Surprisingly, homolog of BARD1 was found in plants and it was renamed At ROW1(repressor of Wuschel-1) according to its extremely important function with regard to plant stem cell homeostasis. Although great advances have been made in human BARD1, the function of this animal tumor-suppressor like gene in plant is not well studied and need to be further elucidated. Here, we review and summarize past and present work regarding this protein. Apart from its previously proposed role in DNA repair, recently it is found essential for shoot and root stem cell development and differentiation in plants. The study of At ROW1 in plant may provide an ideal model for further elucidating the functional mechanism of BARD1 in mammals.

背景:铁死亡是一种区别于凋亡、坏死等新型细胞程序性死亡的方式,主要由累积的脂质过氧化引起,已被证实参与蛛网膜下腔出血后的病理过程。黄芩素是一种铁螯合剂,能够抑制脂质过氧化反应,但其在蛛网膜下腔出血后早期脑损伤中缓解神经元铁死亡的作用仍未明确。目的:探讨黄芩素治疗蛛网膜下腔出血后对神经元铁死亡的影响及机制。方法:提取孕16-17 d C57BL/6L胎鼠大脑皮质神经元细胞,运用血红蛋白刺激原代神经元模拟体外蛛网膜下腔出血模型。采用CCK-8法检测5,15,25,50,100μmol/L黄芩素作用24 h后原代神经元细胞的活力,确定黄芩素的最适浓度。然后将原代神经元细胞分为对照组、血红蛋白组、血红蛋白+黄芩素组,利用试剂盒检测细胞内活性氧和丙二醛水平,RT-PCR检测铁死亡相关标记物PTGS2、SLC7A11、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶4的mRNA表达;进一步将原代神经元细胞分为对照组、SLC7A11抑制剂Erastin组、血红蛋白组、血红蛋白+黄芩素组、血红蛋白+黄芩素+Erastin组,Western blot检测铁死亡相关标记物SLC7A11和谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶4的蛋白表达。结果与结论:(1)选取25μmol/L黄芩素作为后续实验浓度;(2)与血红蛋白组相比,血红蛋白+黄芩素组丙二醛和活性氧水平显著下降(P <0.05);(3)与血红蛋白组相比,血红蛋白+黄芩素组PTGS2的m RNA表达显著下降,SLC7A11和谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶4的m RNA表达显著升高(P <0.000 1);(4)SLC7A11抑制剂Erastin能在一定程度上逆转黄芩素改善的铁死亡作用(P <0.05);(5)结果表明,黄芩素可通过SLC7A11/GPX4通路缓解蛛网膜下腔出血后神经元细胞的铁死亡。

Numerical simulation of super-continuum laser propagation in turbulent atmosphere

Considering the atmospheric extinction and turbulence effects,we investigate the propagation performances of supercontinuum laser sources in atmospheric turbulence statistically by using the numerical simulation method,and the differences in propagation properties between the super-continuum(SC)laser and its pump laser are also *** is found that the propagation characteristics of super-continuum laser are almost similar to those of the pump *** degradation of source coherence degree may cause the relative beam spreading and scintillation indexes to decrease at different propagation distances or different turbulence *** root-mean-square value of beam wandering is insensitive to the variation of source correlation length,and less aperture averaging occurs when the laser source becomes less ***,from the point of view of beam wandering,the SC laser has no advantage over the pump *** the pump laser can bring about a bigger aperture average,the SC laser has a lower scintillation which may be due to the multiple wavelength homogenization effects on intensity *** would be the most important virtue of the SC laser that can be utilized to improve the performance of laser engineering.

Review:J-integral resistance curve testing and evaluation

In this paper a critical review is presented of the history and current state of the art of J-integral resistance curve testing and experimental evaluation methods in conjunction with a discussion of the development of the plane strain fracture toughness test standard ASTM E1820 developed by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Early research efforts on this topic are reviewed first. These include the J-integral concept, experimental estimates of the J-integral for stationary cracks, load line displacement (LLD) and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) based η factor equations, different formulations of J-integral incremental equations for growing cracks, crack growth corrected J-R curve determination, and experimental test methods. Recent developments in J-R curve testing and evaluation are then described, with emphasis on accurate J-integral incremental equations, a normalization method, a modified basic method, a CMOD direct method with use of incremental equations, relationships of plastic geometry factors, constraint-dependent J-R curve testing and correction approaches. An overview of the present fracture toughness test standard ASTM E1820-08a is then presented. The review shows that after more than 40 years of investigation and development, the J-integral resistance curve test methods in ASTM E1820 have become simpler, more cost-effective and more accurate.

Population evolution at the prefecture-level city scale in China:Change patterns and spatial correlations

CONVERGENCE PROPERTIES OF MULTI-DIRECTIONAL PARALLEL ALGORITHMS FOR UNCONSTRAINED MINIMIZATION

Convergence properties of a class of multi-directional parallel quasi-Newton algorithms for the solution of unconstrained minimization problems are studied in this paper. At each iteration these algorithms generate several different quasi-Newton directions, and then apply line searches to determine step lengths along each direction, simultaneously. The next iterate is obtained among these trail points by choosing the lowest point in the sense of function reductions. Different quasi-Newton updating formulas from the Broyden family are used to generate a main sequence of Hessian matrix approximations. Based on the BFGS and the modified BFGS updating formulas, the global and superlinear convergence results are proved. It is observed that all the quasi-Newton directions asymptotically approach the Newton direction in both direction and length when the iterate sequence converges to a local minimum of the objective function, and hence the result of superlinear convergence follows.
