An assessment of the CMIP6 performance in simulating Arctic sea ice volume flux via Fram Strait

Numerical models serve as an essential tool to investigate the causes and effects of Arctic sea ice *** the simulation capabilities of the most recent CMIP6 models in sea ice volume flux provides references for model applications and ***,reliable long-term simulation results of the ice volume fux contribute to a deeper understanding of the sea ice response to global climate *** this study,the sea ice volume flux through six Arctic gateways over the past four decades(1979-2014)were estimated in combination of satellite observations of sea ice concentration(SIC)and sea ice motion(SIM)as well as the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System(PIOMAS)reanalysis sea ice thickness(SIT)*** simulation capability of 17 CMIP6 historical models for the volume flux through Fram Strait were quantitatively *** ice volume flux simulated from the ensemble mean of 17 CMIP6 models demonstrates better performance than that from the individual model,yet IPSL-CM6A-LR and EC-Earth3-Veg-LR outperform the ensemble mean in the annual volume flux,with Taylor scores of 0.86 and 0.50,***6 models display relatively robust capability in simulating the seasonal variations of volume *** them,CESM2-WACCM performs the best,with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and a Taylor score of ***,NESM3 demonstrates the largest devi-ation from the observation/reanalysis data,with the lowest Taylor score of *** variability of sea ice volume flux is primarily influenced by SIM and SIT,followed by *** extreme large sea ice export through Fram Strait is linked to the occurrence of anomalously low air temperatures,which in turn promote increased SIC and SIT in the corresponding ***,the intensified activity of Arctic cyclones and Arctic dipole anomaly could boost the southward sea ice velocity through Fram Strait,which further enhance the sea ice outflow.

Sea ice cover plays an important role in modulating local temperature through heat and moisture *** infuence of thin ice lead and polynya has been wellinvestigated,however,the effect of perennial ice(also called muliyear ice,MYI)has *** study is motivated by it and investigated a hypothesis that changes in MYI concentration in winter triggers changes in short-term local 2-m air *** hypothesis was tested using time series analysis of the two parameters and correlation between *** from the winters of 2004-2009 were used for the examination at three spatial *** hypothesis is found to be potentially accepted when MYI exists in a consolidated ice regime with negligible thin ice or open water in the surroundings,and the air temperature is low *** for the acceptance of the hypothesis were quantitatively *** qualifications entail that the ice cell must experience daily change of MYI concentration meanwhile satisfy the criteria of total ice concentration(TIC),young ice concentration(YIC)and air temperature(Tar)in the surrounding area,which are TIC>88.3%,YICyears,depending on ice conditions such as ice type distributions and snow *** study offers a first attempt to assess the effect of MYI on the same-day local surface air temperature using satelite observations,and provides evidence of this effect under quantitatively quanlifying conditions.

Spatially explicit reconstruction of cropland cover in Europe from AD 1800 to 2000

One of the challenges in global change research is the significant uncertainty in global historical land use and land cover(LUCC)datasets,which are widely used as foundational *** addition to the regional cropland area reconstructions,improving the grid allocation method is another feasible way to raise the reliability of historical LUCC *** this study,an integrated reconstruction of the national cropland areas over the past 200 years was developed for 36 European *** that,the allocation algorithm was built using physiogeographic variables and historical city sites for accounting for land suitability and cultivation preferences,***,cropland data in Europe with a spatial resolution of 5′×5′at five time sections from AD 1800 to 2000 were generated using the optimal allocation algorithm in accordance with the stages of the regional *** results were as follows:(1)The dominant factors governing the distribution of croplands in Europe vary at different agricultural stages,but the results can be merged *** suitability was more optimal for allocation during the modern agricultural stage(AD 1950 and 2000);the priority index combined with land suitability and cultivation preference was more reasonable for allocation during the traditional agricultural stage(AD 1800).The average of the allocations by priority index and the land suitability could be adopted as the allocation results during the transitional stage(AD 1850 and 1900)because the grids for absolute differences within±10 and±20 percentage points between the results obtained from the above two allocations were above 80% and 95%,respectively,which means the two allocation results could be merged.(2)Over the past 200 years,the total cropland area in Europe first increased to a peak in AD 1900 and then ***,the centre of the higher cropland fraction shifted from the western part of Europe in AD 1800 to the eastern part of the continent after AD 1950.(3)

Navigability of the Northern Sea Route for Arc7 ice-class vessels during winter and spring sea-ice conditions

Sea ice hinders the navigability of the Arctic,especially in winter and ***,three Arc7 ice-class Liquefied Natural Gas carrying vessels safely transited the Northern Sea Route(NSR)without icebreaker assistance in January *** and more Arc7 ice-class vessels are putting into the transit services in the ***,it is necessary to analyze sea-ice conditions and their impact on navigation during wintertime,and the future navigability of Arc7 ice-class vessels along the NSR during winter and *** on sea ice datasets from satellite observations and a model using data assimilation,we explored the sea-ice conditions and their impact during the first three successful commercial voyages through the NSR in *** addition,we analyzed the sea ice variation and estimated navigability for Arc7 ice-class vessels in the NSR from January to June of the years 2021–2050 using future projections of the sea-ice cover by the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)models under two emission scenarios(SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5).The results reveal lower sea ice thickness and similar sea ice concentration during these three transits relative to the past 42 years(from 1979 to 2020).We found the thickness has a larger impact on the vessels’speeds than sea ice *** likely sea ice thickness played a larger role than the sea ice concentration for the successful transit of the NSR in winter *** projections suggest sea ice thickness will decrease further in most regions of the NSR from January to June under all scenarios enabling increased navigability of the NSR for Arc7 ice-class *** vessels could transit through the NSR from January to June under all scenarios by 2050,while some areas near the coast of East Siberian Sea remain inaccessible for Arc7 ice-class vessels in spring(April and May).These findings can support the strategic planning of shipping along the NSR in winter and spring.

Global precipitation change during the Holocene:a combination of records and simulations

Precipitation can shape our climate both in the present and the *** though we have made significant advances in studying the mechanisms of millennial-scale climate changes through high-resolution records,we still cannot quantitatively characterize the global spatiotemporal precipitation variations within the ***,we developed a new approach to integrating data from 349 globally distributed records and climate models to reconstruct regional and global precipitation patterns over the last 12000 *** results reveal that precipitation reconstructions can be divided into monsoon-driven and westerly driven *** results suggest that an arid climate was experienced in the late glacial and early Holocene epoch(~12−7.4 cal ka BP),attaining a middle Holocene optimum(~7.4−3.5 cal ka BP),and drier after the middle *** to our reconstructions,the global precipitation reconstruction increased from the early Holocene until 3.8 cal ka BP and then subsequently *** addition,our reconstructions better reproduce the low-frequency events and extreme precipitation at the millennial scale in the hemispheres,but the performance of the reconstructions in the equatorial Pacific and the Southern Hemisphere of Africa and the Americas is *** resolution of the record and the simulation capability of the climate model remain important means to improve our understanding of past climate change.

A new liquid membrane diffusion model for characterizing the adsorption kinetics of europium by using a continuous measurement of adsorption platform

To explore the kinetic adsorption under continuous and nonequilibrium states, an integration of continuous measurement and adsorption platform kinetics method was proposed, which was initially called the ICM-AP kinetics method, and a corresponding kinetic adsorption experimental method was developed. Adsorption experiments of europium(Eu) on Ca-bentonite,Na-bentonite, and the D231 cation exchange resin were performed using the ICM-AP kinetics method and continuous measurements. Because the kinetic experimental results observed in this study were different from those of traditional batch adsorption data, pseudo-first-order or pseudo-second-order kinetic models were unsuitable for fitting the experimental ***, a liquid membrane diffusion(LMD) model was developed based on the assumption of simultaneous adsorption/desorption to discuss the mechanism of kinetic adsorption. The kinetic adsorption mechanism was also studied by using *** results indicated that the proposed adsorption model can fit the experimental data more suitably, and the adsorption/desorption behaviors of Eu on bentonite and the D231 resin were simultaneously observed, suggesting that the adsorption kinetics of Eu(Ⅲ) was mainly dominated by hydrated Eu(Ⅲ) ions on the liquid membrane.

Deep Video Harmonization by Improving Spatial-temporal Consistency

Video harmonization is an important step in video editing to achieve visual consistency by adjusting foreground appear-ances in both spatial and temporal *** methods always only harmonize on a single scale or ignore the inaccuracy of flow estimation,which leads to limited harmonization *** this work,we propose a novel architecture for video harmoniza-tion by making full use of spatiotemporal features and yield temporally consistent harmonized *** introduce multiscale harmon-ization by using nonlocal similarity on each scale to make the foreground more consistent with the *** also propose a fore-ground temporal aggregator to dynamically aggregate neighboring frames at the feature level to alleviate the effect of inaccurate estim-ated flow and ensure temporal *** experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method over other state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative and visual comparisons.
