Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver graft function following ischemia in liver transplantation and liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages and any potential disadvantages of liver IPC prior to isolation for rat hepatocytes during isolation and cryopreservation. After isolating and thawing the cryopreserved hepatocytes after 14 and 28 d,cell viability,efficiency,and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in preserve solution were examined for every group. Groups treated with IPC had better cell viability determination,assessment of plating efficiency and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay than Group without IPC,suggesting that IPC prior to isolation may have a significant protective effect on hepatocytes subjected to isolation and short period cryopreservation.

Acute necrotising pancreatitis is characterized by inflammatory and necrotic events, which follow the initial intra-acinar injury involving enzyme activation, and disruption of the acinar cytoskeleton.~1 At present, apoptosis has become a hot topic in many kinds of disease. Bax and Bcl-2 are the important control gene during cell apoptosis.~2 Previous study has shown that interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a kind of important anti-inflammatory cytokine and plays a role of self-defense mechanism, limiting the intensity of inflammatory process. We used rats model of acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) with liver injury to explore the effect of IL-10 on the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and hepatocyte apoptosis and the role of the expression of Bcl-2, Bax in ANP pathophysiology for finding out possible therapy methods.

Objectives To evaluate peripheral auditory dysfunction in senile dementia of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its relationship with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Pure tone thresholds,word recognition scores (WRS), acoustic immittance and auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were tested to evaluate the auditory function in 43 AD patients and 50 normal subjects. The test reliability in these subjects was examined before the test results were evaluated for their correlation with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE) score. Results There were no statistically significant differences in peripheral auditory functions between the two ears in the tested subjects or between the two groups when the auditometric results of the right ear were compared(P > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups when audiometric test reliability, acoustic impedance and ABR results were compared(P > 0.05). Conclutions The pure tone audiometric threshold and WRS in AD patients are similar to those in comparable non-AD senile subjects. Peripheral auditory dysfunction is not related to cognitive dysfunction.

AIM： To analyze the clinical and endoscopic features of Chinese patients with reflux esophagitis （RE）. METHODS： A total of 1405 RE patients were analyzed retrospectively. Data on gender, age, presence/absence of H pylori infection and associated esophageal hiatal hernia were collected. Esophagitis was divided into different grades according to Los Angeles Classification. RESULTS： Of 18823 patients, 1405 were diagnosed as RE. The ratio of male to female patients was 1.75：1 （P 〈 0.01）. The mean age of male and female patients was significantly different （P = 0.01）. The peak age at onset of the disease was 40-60 years. According to Los Angeles Classification, there were significant differences in the age of patients with grades A and B compared to patients with grades C and D （P 〈 0.01）. Two hundred and seventy-seven patients were infected with H pyiorl, the infection rate was low （P 〈 0.01）. Complication of esophageal hiatal hernia was found to be significantly associated with the severity of esophagitis and age in 195 patients （P 〈 0.01）. Esophageal mucosa damages were mainly located at the right esophageal wall. CONCLUSION： The peak age of onset of RE is 40-60 years and higher in males than in females. The mean age of onset of RE is lower in males than in females. The infection rate of Hpylori is significantly decreased in patients with esophagitis. Old age and esophageal hiatal hernia are associated with more severe esophagitis. Right esophageal mucosal damage can occur more often in RE patients.

Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) with reduction process was used to fabricate TiB2 powder from TiO2-B2O3-Mg system. The colloidal alumina-bonded TiB2 paste was prepared and coated on the cathode carbon blocks. Various properties of the baked paste such as the corrosive resistance, thermal expansion and wettability were tested. Experimental results showed that the colloidal alumina-bonded TiB2 coating could be well wetted by liquid aluminum; and the thermal expansion coefficient of the coated material was 5.8x10(-6) degreesC(-1) at 20-1000 degreesC, which was close to that of the traditional anthracite block cathode (4x10(-6) degreesC(-1)); the electrical resistivity was 8 mu Omega (.)m at 900 degreesC when the content of alumina in the coated material was about 9% in mass fraction. In addition, some other good results such as sodium resistance were also reported.

Background Dystonia is one of the most challenging movement disorders to treat. Medications and surgeries are the two methods to control dystonic symptoms. For patients with dystonia in whom symptoms are inadequately controlled with pharmacologic measures, the use of deep brain stimulation （DBS） can improve symptoms and enhance functional capacity. The best candidate for DBS is believed to be primary generalized dystonia, especially the DYT-1 type. Here, we report 9 cases of secondary dystonia to explore the feasibility, indications and complications of DBS in the treatment of secondary dystonia. Methods from July 2003 to June 2006, nine patients with secondary dystonia underwent surgery at beijing Tiantan hospital. Among them, 2 were diagnosed as having tardive dystonia, 1 had posttraumatic dystonia, 3 had a history of perinatal anoxia, 1 had neonatal pathologic jaundice, and 2 had no exact contributory history; MRI showed bilateral lentiform nuclei degeneration in one patient. Six patients underwent bilateral subthalamic nucleus （STN）-DBS, two underwent unilateral STN-DBS, the other underwent left STN and fight globus pallidus internus（GPi）-DBS. Results With intraoperative microelectrode recording, the targeted nucleus was accurately localized. Tentative stimulation could decrease muscle tension to the same extent, but twisting was not obviously improved. Follow-up for 3 months to 3 years showed satisfactory results in 3 patients with tardive dystonia and posttraumatic dystonia and that Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Scale （BFMS） decreased by more than 90%. The improvement of symptoms was progressive along with time. The other 6 patients had slight to moderate improvement. None of them had severe surgery-related complications. One had lead fracture 16 months after surgery and the lead was then evacuated. Conclusions DBS could be an ideal treatment for patients with tardive and posttraumatic dystonia.
