The Impact of Implementing the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems in Ships （AFS Convention） on the Marine Environment

Marine fouling is the settlement and growth of a variety of marine organisms, such as bacteria, diatoms, protozoa and algae spores on structures immersed in seawater, such as ship＇s hulls, navigation buoys, and sonar equipment. Anti-fouling refers to material or systems used to prevent the accumulation of biological material on submerged surfaces. Bio-fouling results in higher fuel consumption and can also facilitate the transport of harmful NIS （Non-Indigenous Species）. Antifouling technologies incorporating biocides （e.g., Tributyltin） have been developed to prevent fouling. Their widespread use, however, raised concerns about their toxic effects on marine communities. The AFS Convention （International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems in Ships） is a 2001 IMO （International Maritime Organization） treaty, whereby states agree to ban the use of harmful anti-fouling paints and other anti-fouling systems that contain harmful substances. Particularly, the use of the organotinTributyltin is prohibited, since leaching of that chemical from the hulls of ships has been shown to cause deleterious effects on some sea creatures. Although the AFS Convention has entered into force, its full implementation has not yet been appropriately achieved. Most of the ratifying States have delegated the Classification Society to inspect their ships to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the Convention. Since painting ships takes place in dry docks, the full control falls in the hands of Classification Societies.

Objective:To isolate and identify the polyphenolic constituents of Dypsis lutescens,and evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of the ethanolic extract of Dypsis lutescens ***:Hepatoprotective,antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of two doses of Dypsis lutescens ethanolic leaf extract were investigated in five groups of six rats each administered with the ethanolic extract of Dypsis lutescens *** function parameters were assessed,histopathological study was carried out,the anti-inflammatory mediators and the antioxidant potential in the liver tissues were *** addition,the total ethanolic extract of Dypsis lutescens leaves was subjected to different chromatographic separation techniques to yield ten phenolic *** isolated compounds structures were spectroscopically ***:Hepatoprotective activity of Dypsis lutescens ethanolic extract was estimated for the first time and showed significant activity against histopathological changes induced by D-galactosamine in *** extract improved the liver *** to the D-galactosamine group,the architecture of the liver in the treated groups was improved in the histopathological *** results proved the hepatoprotective activity of Dypsis lutescens and its ability in attenuating liver oxidative damage and *** investigations of the total extract afforded ten compounds from the genus ***:The alcoholic extract of Dypsis lutescens exerted potential hepatoprotective action,maintaining liver health and functions.

Stem cells are present in the tissues and organs and remain in a quiescent and undifferentiated state until it is physiologically necessary to produce new descendant *** to their multipotency property,mesenchymal stem cells have attracted considerable attention worldwide due to their immunomodulation and therapeutic function in tissue *** cells secrete components such as paracrine factors,extracellular vesicles,and exosomes which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory,anti-aging,reconstruction and wound healing potentials in many in vitro and in vivo *** pluripotency and immunomodulatory features of stem cells could potentially be an effective tool in cell therapy and tissue *** affects the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells,decreasing the potential for regeneration and the loss of optimal functions in organisms over *** progress in the field of cellular therapy and regenerative medicine has facilitated the evolution of particular guidelines and quality control approaches,which eventually lead to clinical *** therapy could potentially be one of the most promising therapies to control aging due to the fact that single stem cell transplantation can regenerate or substitute the injured *** understand the involvement of stem cells not only in tissue maintenance and disease but also in the control of aging it is important to know and identify their properties,functions,and regulation in vivo,which are addressed in this review.

Validated spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of atorvastatin in pharmaceutical preparations

A rapid,sensitive and simple spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the estimation of *** this method,the native fluorescence characteristics of atorvastatin have been studied in both acidic and basic *** sensitivity was obtained with 5% acetic acid at 389 nm using 276 nm for *** analysis showed a good correlation coefficient(r=0.9995) between fluorescence intensity and concentration over the range of 1.5-4 mg/mL with detection limit of 0.012 mg/*** proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of atorvastatin in pure and pharmaceutical dosage forms with average recovery of 100.2970.47%.The results were compared favorably with those of the reported method.

Neutron Activation Analyses Used to Study Elemental Accumulation in Some Marine Macrophytes (Mediterranean Sea Coast of Egypt)

The concentrations of Na, Mg, Al, S, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Se Br, Rb, Sr, Zr, Mo, Ag, Sb, I, Cs, Ba, La, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Hf, Ta, W, Au, Th and U in 6 types of marine macrophytes (algae and seagrass): Gelidium pusillum (Stackhouse) Le Jolis, Ulva intestinalis Linnaeus, Amphiroa rigida J.V. Lamouroux, Hypnea sp., Cystoseira sp. and Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile (seagrass) collected from 3 stations along the Mediterranean Sea coast of Egypt were determined using instrumental neutron activation analysis. The contents of elements in marine macrophytes indicated that they accumulated elements at different levels depending on their type of species (brown, red, green and seagrass) and the ambient water conditions. However, the concentrations of Cr, Co, Ni, Se, Zr, Mo, Ag, Cs, La, Sm, Eu, Yb, Hf, Ta, Au and U were very similar in all samples. In general the levels of classically investigated elements, particularly Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Zn determined in the macrophytes in the present study are lower or within the wide range of values previously reported for species of these genera sampled along the Egyptian Mediterranean coast.

Expanding the Tanh-Function Method for Solving Nonlinear Equations

In this paper, using the tanh-function method, we introduce a new approach to solitary wave solutions for solving nonlinear PDEs. The proposed method is based on adding integration constants to the resulting nonlinear ODEs from the nonlinear PDEs using the wave transformation. Also, we use a transformation related to those integration constants. Some examples are considered to find their exact solutions such as KdV- Burgers class and Fisher, Boussinesq and Klein-Gordon equations. Moreover, we discuss the geometric interpretations of the resulting exact solutions.

Current marine research primarily depends on weighty and invasive sensory equipment and telemetric network to understand the marine environment,including the diverse fauna it contains,as a function of animal behavior and size,as well as equipment *** match animal morphology and activity within the surrounding marine environment,here we show a physically flexible and stretchable skin-like and waterproof autonomous multifunctional system,integrating Bluetooth,memory chip,and high performance physical *** sensory tag is mounted on a swimming crab(Portunus pelagicus)and is capable of continuous logging of depth,temperature,and salinity within the harsh ocean *** fully packaged,ultra-lightweight(<2.4 g in water),and compliant“Marine Skin”system does not have any wired connection enabling safe and weightless cuttingedge approach to monitor and assess marine life and the ecosystem’s health to support conservation and management of marine ecosystems.

Rothiamucilaginosa, previously known as Stomatococcus mucilaginous, resides in the oral cavity and respiratory tract as part of the normal flora [1]. It is a gram-positive, cocus-shaped bacterium. The bacterium is considered an emerging opportunistic pathogen in patients with chronic immunosuppressive diseases. Most of these reports were described in severe neutropenia or hematological cancer patients but less frequently in immune-competent hosts. We report two cases of endocarditis and meningitis due to R. mucilaginosain non-neutropenic hosts.
