Effects of three consecutive monthly intravitreal injection of ranibizumab for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy in Korea

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of three consecutive monthly injections of intravitreal ranibizumab for the treatment of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV) in ***: A retrospective chart review of 25 patients(27 eyes) with PCV was conducted. Patients received three initial monthly intravitreal injections(0.5 mg) of ranibizumab and were monitored monthly for 12 mo from January 2010 to October 2011. Reinjection of ranibizumab after three initial monthly loading was administered on an as-needed basis, guided by the optical coherence tomography(OCT), fluorescein angiography(FA) and indocyanine green angiography(ICGA). The main outcomes were the changes of the mean best corrected Snellen visual acuity(VA), central macular thickness(CMT) by OCT, the changes of polyps and branching vascular network by FA and ICGA, and total number of injections received by patients during the 12 ***: The mean best corrected Snellen visual acuities at baseline, 1, 3, 6 and 12 mo after primary injection were 0.77 ±0.59, 0.76 ±0.53, 0.70 ±0.47, 0.63 ±0.43,0.61 ±0.43, 0.62 ±0.42 log MAR, respectively, and showed significant improvement at 3, 6, 12mo(P =0.003, P =0.002,P =0.018, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The mean CMT at baseline, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 mo was 312.41 ±66.38 μm,244.59 ±71.47 μm, 232.32 ±69.41 μm, 226.69 ±69.03 μm,228.62 ±37.07 μm, 227.59 ±51.01 μm respectively, and showed significant reduction(all P <0.001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). Polypoidal lesions resolved on ICGA in 3 eyes(11.1%) and a branching vascular network remained in all 24 eyes(88.9%). A total of 106 injections were given in the 12-month period, which equaled to a mean of 3.92(range, 3-6) times. Sixteen of the 27 treatedeyes had additional 1.56 ±0.91 injections. Integrated Framework for Vehicle Interior Design Using Digital Human Model

Evaluating the human friendliness of vehicles is essential for designing new vehicles since large numbers of human-machine interactions occur frequently inside vehicles. In this research, we develop an integrated framework for vehicle interior design using a digital human model （DHM）. In this framework, the knowledge-based parametric modelling function of vehicles is implemented using a commercial computer-aided design （CAD） system. The combination of the DHM and the CAD system enables designers into carry out ergonomic evaluations of various human-vehicle interactions and understand the effects of modifications of vehicle design parameters on occupants during designing. Further, the information on human-vehicle interaction obtained using this system can be transmitted to dedicated biomechanical analysis software. By analysing human motions inside vehicles using such software, we can obtain optimized interior design parameters.

The effects of aerobic exercise training on oxidant-antioxidant balance, neurotrophic factor levels, and blood-brain barrier function in obese and non-obese men

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of obesity and aerobic exercise training on oxidant-antioxidant balance,neurotrophic factor levels, and blood-brain barrier(BBB) ***: Ten non-obese healthy men(body mass index < 25 kg/m2) and 10 obese men(body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2) were included in the *** groups performed treadmill exercise for 40 min 3 times weekly for 8 weeks at 70% heart rate reserve. Blood samples were collected to examine oxidant-antioxidant balance(reactive oxygen species(ROS) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity levels), neurotrophic factors(brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), nerve growth factor, and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor levels), and BBB function(S100βand neuron-specific enolase(NSE) levels) before and after exercise ***: The obese group showed significantly greater changes than the non-obese group in serum ROS(-0.46 ± 0.31 mmol/L vs.-0.10 ±0.17 mmol/L,p=0.005),serum S100 p levels(-8.50 ± 5.92 ng/L vs.-0.78 ± 5.45 ng/L,p=0.007),and serum NSE levels(-0.89 ± 0.54 μg/L vs.-0.01 ± 0.74 μg/L,p= 0.007) after training. At baseline,the obese group showed significantly higher serum ROS and S100β levels and significantly lower serum SOD activity and BDNF levels than the non-obese group(p < 0.05). The obese group showed significantly lower serum ROS, S100β,and NSE levels and significantly higher serum SOD activity and BDNF levels after training compared with baseline(p < 0.05).Conclusion: These results suggest that obesity can reduce serum neurotrophic factor levels and can induce BBB dysfunction. On the other hand,aerobic exercise can improve an oxidant-antioxidant imbalance in obese subjects and limit BBB dysfunction.

The secretory products of Trichomonas vaginalis decrease fertilizing capacity of mice sperm in vitro

Trichomonas vaginalis infection is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections in humans and is now recognized as an important cause of infertility in men. There is little information about the effect of extracellular polymeric substances （EPS） from T. vaginalis on sperm, but previous reports do not provide a conclusive description of the functional integrity of the sperm. To investigate the impact of EPS on the fertilizing capacity of sperm, we assessed sperm motility, acrosomal status, hypo-osmotic swelling, and in vitro fertilization rate after incubating the sperm with EPS in vitro using mice. The incubation of sperm with EPS significantly decreased sperm motility, viability, and functional integrity in a concentration and time-dependent manner. These effects on sperm quality also resulted in a decreased fertilization rate in vitro. This is the first report that demonstrates the direct negative impact of the EPS of T. vaginalis on the fertilization rate of sperm in vitro. However, further study should be performed using human sperm to determine if EPS has similar negative impact on human sperm fertilizing capacity in vitro.

Fabrication of periodically aligned vertical singlecrystalline anatase TiO2 nanotubes with perfect hexagonal open-ends using chemical capping materials

A vertically aligned anatase TiO2 （A-TiO2） nanotube array has been fabricated by coating a ZnO nanorod （NR） template with a TiO2 precursor solution. After coating, the ZnO NR cores were selectively etched in an acidic environment to form TiO2 nanotubes （NTs）. More specifically, after growing the ZnO NRs via a hydrothermal method, one drop of the TiO2 precursor solution was cast to coat the ZnO NRs, the tops of which were previously covered with chemical capping materials by electrostatic interaction, and then the sample was sintered. Finally, the sample was immersed in an acidic solution resulting in selective etching of the ZnO NR cores. Thus, only TiO2 NTs remained on the substrate. The capping material is effectively used to create a perfect, hexagonal open-ended TiO2 NT array, which interestingly extends onset absorption towards the visible region.

Early experience of the compression anastomosis ring (CAR^(TM) 27) in left-sided colon resection

AIM:To evaluate clinical validity of the compression anastomosis ring(CARTM27) anastomosis in left-sided colonic resection. METHODS:A non-randomized prospective data collection was performed for patients undergoing an elective left-sided colon resection,followed by an anastomosis using the CARTM27 between November 2009 and January *** criteria of the use of the CARTM27 were anastomoses between the colon and at or above the intraperitoneal *** primary short-term clinical endpoint,rate of anastomotic leakage,and other clinical outcomes,including intraand postoperative complications,length of operation time and hospital stay,and the ring elimination time were evaluated. RESULTS:A total of 79 patients(male,43;median age,64 years) underwent an elective left-sided colon resection,followed by an anastomosis using *** was performed laparoscopically in 70 patients,in whom two patients converted to open procedure(2.9%) .There was no surgical *** an intraoperative complication,total disruption of the anastomosis occurred by premature enforced tension on the proximal segment of the anastomosis in one *** ring was removed and another new CARTM27 anastomosis was *** patient with sigmoid colon cancer showed postoperative anastomotic leakage after 6 d postoperatively and temporary diverting ileostomy was *** date of expulsion of the ring could not be recorded because most patients were not aware that the ring had been *** patients manifested clinical symptoms of anastomotic stricture. CONCLUSION:Short-term evaluation of the CARTM27 anastomosis in elective left colectomy suggested it to be a safe and efficacious alternative to the standard hand-sewn or stapling technique.
