AIM: To evaluate quantitatively and qualitatively the different CD34+cell subsets after priming by chemotherapy granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(± G-CSF)in patients with acute myeloid ***: Peripheral blood and bone marrow sampleswere harvested in 8 acute myeloid leukemia patients during and after induction chemotherapy. The CD34/CD38 cell profile was analyzed by multi-parameter flow cytometry. Adhesion profile was made using CXC chemokine receptor 4(CXCR4)(CD184), VLA-4(CD49d/CD29) and ***: Chemotherapy ± G-CSF mobilized immature cells(CD34+CD38 population), while the more mature cells(CD34+CD38lowand CD34+CD38+populations) decreased progressively after treatment. Circulating CD34+cells tended to be more sensitive to chemotherapy after priming with G-CSF. CD34+cell mobilization was correlated with a gradual increase in CXCR4 and CD47expression, suggesting a role in cell protection and the capacity of homing back to the ***: Chemotherapy ± G-CSF mobilizes into the circulation CD34+bone marrow cells, of which, the immature CD34+CD38-cell population. Further manipulations of these interactions may be a means with which to control the trafficking of leukemia stem cells to improve patients' outcomes.

Calculation of sediment transport processes is a very difficult task. Due to many influencing factors and the impossibibity to develop a fully valid physically model, there exist many approximate models to simulate the process of sediment transport. For engineering predictions in unsteady flow, there exist numerical schemes to solve the St. Venant equations in one or two dimensions coupled with an equation for sediment tranport. The problem is not only the accurate calibratinn of the model, but also the acquisition of realistic values for the various input parameters. For most of the parameters we have to consider their spatial and/or temporal stochastic nature, and therefore we must describe them as random variables or spatiotemporal random fields. The well known first order reliability method is a useful tool to assess the influence of stochastic input variables to the calculated result. In this paper we will show how uns method can be applied to judge quantitatively the influence of the inaccuracy of different input parameters with a simple model for deposition of suspended material in onedimensinnal unsteady flow.

In this work,thin films of nickel oxide(NiO)were deposited by a simple and inexpensive technique,which is spray pyrolysis on ordinary glass substrates heated to a fixed temperature of500°C,from a solution containing nickel nitrate hexahydrate as a precursor dissolved in distilled water with deferent values of *** NiO thin films obtained were characterized to determine the structure with X-ray diffraction technique(XRD),the absorption domain(UV-Visible Spectroscopy),and the surface morphology(SEM).The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the presence of NiO phase with preferential orientation along the(111)*** optical gap for nickel oxide calculated with a concentration of0.1M from the measurement of optical absorption is3.6eV,which is quite comparable to the value of the ratio.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has caused a global economic and health crisis. Recently, plasma levels of galectin-9 (Gal-9), a β-galactoside-binding lectin involved in immune regulation and viral immunopathogenesis, were reported to be elevated in the setting of severe COVID-19 disease. However, the impact of Gal-9 on SARS-CoV-2 infection and immunopathology remained to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrate that Gal-9 treatment potently enhances SARS-CoV-2 replication in human airway epithelial cells (AECs), including immortalized AECs and primary AECs cultured at the air–liquid interface. Gal-9–glycan interactions promote SARS-CoV-2 attachment and entry into AECs in an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-dependent manner, enhancing the binding of the viral spike protein to ACE2. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that Gal-9 and SARS-CoV-2 infection synergistically induced the expression of key pro-inflammatory programs in AECs, including the IL-6, IL-8, IL-17, EIF2, and TNFα signaling pathways. Our findings suggest that manipulation of Gal-9 should be explored as a therapeutic strategy for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

AIM: To prospectively determine the safety and tolerability of oral L-selenomethionine(SLM) with concurrent chemoradiation(CCRT) for Stage Ⅲ non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) and estimate if the incidence and/or severity of adverse events could be reduced by its ***: Sixteen patients with stage Ⅲ NSCLC were accrued to this single arm, phase Ⅱ study. CCRT consisted of radiation given at 2 Gy per fraction for 30-33 fractions, 5 d per week with concurrent weekly Ⅳ paclitaxel 50 mg/m2 followed by carboplatin dosed at an area under the time-concentration curve of 2. SLM was dosed in a loading phase at 4800 μg twice daily for one week prior to CCRT followed by once daily dosing during treatment. RESULTS: No selenium-related toxicity was observed. Analysis revealed grade 3 or higher esophagitis in 3 of 16 patients(19%), pneumonitis in 0, leukopenia in 2(12.5%), and anemia in 1(6%); the latter two were significantly reduced when compared to the protocolstated expected rate of 35%(P = 0.045 for leukopenia, and P < 0.01 for anemia). Median overall survival was 14.9 mo and median failure-free survival was 9 mo(95%CI: 3.3-21.5).CONCLUSION: There may be some protective benefit of selenium in the setting of CCRT for inoperable NSCLC. The data suggests decreased rates of myelosuppression when compared to similarly-treated historical and contemporary controls. Further evaluation of selenium in this setting may be warranted.

In industrial machinery, thermal expansion can change the geometry of mechanical components, particularly the operating clearances and the characteristics of materials. This may result in overloading and dangerous tightening. In addition, intense heat flux through thick walls deforms parts and cause thermal stresses. The heat alters also the mechanical and the tribological properties of materials; it lowers their resistance and their modulus of elasticity. These phenomena require the limitation of temperature and heat flow and the dimensioning of the members accordingly. It is therefore of very high importance to determine the temperature field in the interfacial sliding contacts. Since it is difficult to measure these temperatures, it seems important to use developed models with experimental investigations in order to improve the understanding of the phenomena and to determine the temperature distribution in and near the contact zone. The objective of this work is to determine experimentally the temperature at 2 mm from the contact, and then a regression is performed to calculate the coefficients that optimize the temperature corresponding to the interface using a numerical modeling based on the finite volume method. To achieve this, we have considered the solution of a two-dimensional problem given by the equation of heat conduction, in steady state, with a Hertz contact pressure, limited to a circular contact zone of radius a. In addition, in order to control the maximum number of parameters related to the generation of heat by sliding, we used our experimental results which give the evolution of the friction coefficient as a function of load and speed. The values of the latter allow the calculation of the heat flow generated by mechanical friction.

Randomized phase Ⅱ trial of selenomethionine as a modulator of efficacy and toxicity of chemoradiation in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck

AIM: To investigate whether selenomethionine(SLM) reduces mucositis incidence in patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer(HNSCC) undergoing concurrent chemoradiation(CRT).METHODS: In this multi-institutional, randomized, double-blind phase Ⅱ trial, patients with Stage Ⅲ or Ⅳ HNSCC received SLM 3600 μg/m2 or placebo twice daily for 7 d prior to CRT, once daily during CRT, and daily for 3 wk following CRT. CRT consisted of 70 Gy at 2 Gy per fraction with cisplatin 100 mg/m2 Ⅳ on days 1, 22, and 43. RESULTS: Eighteen patients were randomized, 10 received SLM, and there were no differences in baseline factors. There was no difference in mucositis or patientreported side effects between groups. There was no difference in overall or relapse-free survival at 12 ***: Addition of SLM to CRT for HNSCC was well-tolerated but did not lower the incidence of severe mucositis or improve quality of life or survival outcomes.
