Suppression of Methane Gas Emissions and Analysis of the Electrode Microbial Community in a Sediment-Based Bio-Electrochemical System

The effects of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) for the suppression of methane gas emissions from sediment were examined using a laboratory-scale reactor system. Methane gas emissions from acetate were suppressed by approximately 36% from control based on the installation of a BES in which carbon-graphite electrodes were buried in sediment and arbitrarily set at certain oxidative potentials (+300 mV vs Ag/AgCl) using a potentiostat. Meanwhile, methane gas emissions increased in the BES reactor where the electrode potential was set at -200 mV. Results obtained from pyrotag sequencing analysis of the microbial community on the surface of the buried electrodes targeting 16S rRNA genes demonstrated that the genusGeobacterhad drastically propagated in a sample from the reactor where the electrodes were buried. Quantitative analysis of 16S rRNA genes of archaea also revealed that the archaeal population had decreased to approximately 1/6 of its original level on the electrode of the BES set at +300 mV. This implied that the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment was raised to the inhibition level for methanogenesis in the vicinity of the buried electrode. Analysis of electron flux in the experiment revealed that electrons intrinsically used for methanogenesis were recovered via current generation in the sediment where a potential of +300 mV was set for the electrode, although most electrons donated from acetate were captured by oxygen respiration and other electron-accepting reactions. These results imply that BES technology is suitable for use as a tool for controlling re-dox-dependent reactions in natural environments, and that it also brought about changes in the microbial population structure and methanogenic activity in sediment.

Usefulness of portal vein pressure for predicting the effects of tolvaptan in cirrhotic patients

AIM: To elucidate influencing factors of treatment response, then tolvaptan has been approved in Japan for liquid ***: We herein conducted this study to clarify the influencing factors in 40 patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis complicated by liquid retention. Tolvaptan was administered at a dosage of 7.5 mg once a day for patients with conventional diuretic-resistant hepatic edema for 7 d. At the initiation of tolvaptan, the estimated hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) value which was estimated portal vein pressure was measured using hepatic venous catheterization. We analyzed the effects of tolvaptan and influencing factors associated with treatment ***: Subjects comprised patients with a median age of 65 (range, 40-82) years. According to the Child-Pugh classification, class A was 3 patients, class B was 19, and class C was 18. Changes from the baseline in body weight were -1.0 kg (P = 2.04 × 10-6) and -1.3 kg (P = 1.83 × 10-5), respectively. The median HVPG value was 240 (range, 105-580) mmH2O. HVPG was only significant influencing factor of the weight loss effect. When patients with body weight loss of 2 kg or greater from the baseline was defined as responders, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the optimal HVPG cutoff value was 190 mmH2O in predicting treatment response. The response rate was 87.5% (7/8) in patients with HVPG of 190 mmH2O or less, whereas it was only 12.5% (2/16) in those with HVPG of greater than 190 mmH2O (P = 7.46 × 10-4). We compared each characteristics factors between responders and non-responders. As a result, HVPG (P = 0.045) and serum hyaluronic acid (P = 0.017) were detected as useful ***: The present study suggests that tolvaptan in the treatment of liquid retention could be more effective for patients with lower portal vein pressure.

Helicobacter heilmannii sensu stricto-related gastric ulcers:A case report

A spiral bacterium (SH9), morphologically different from Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), was found in a 62-year-old woman’s gastric mucosa. Gastroscopic examination revealed multiple gastric ulcers near the pyloric ring; mapping gastric biopsy showed mild mononuclear infiltration with large lymphoid follicles in the antrum, without corpus atrophy. Urea breath test and H. pylori culture were negative, but Giemsa staining of biopsies revealed tightly coiled bacteria that immunostained with anti-H. pylori antibody. Sequencing of SH9 16S rRNA and the partial urease A and B subunit genes showed that the former sequence had highest similarity (99%; 1302/1315 bp) to Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii) sensu stricto (H. heilmannii s.s.) BC1 obtained from a bobcat, while the latter sequence confirmed highest similarity (98.3%; 1467/1493 bp) to H. heilmannii s.s. HU2 obtained from a human. The patient was diagnosed with multiple gastric ulcers associated with H. heilmannii s.s. infection. After triple therapy (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and lansoprazole) with regimen for eradicating H. pylori, gastroscopy showed ulcer improvement and no H. heilmannii s.s. upon biopsy.

Urea-assisted natural seawater electrolysis is an emerging technology that is effective for grid-scale carbon-neutral hydrogen mass production yet *** scaling relations is an effective strategy to break through the bottleneck of natural seawater ***,by DFT calculation,we demonstrated that the interface boundaries between Ni_(2)P and MoO_(2) play an essential role in the selfrelaxation of the Ni-O interfacial bond,effectively modulating a coordination number of intermediates to control independently their adsorption-free energy,thus circumventing the adsorption-energy scaling *** this conceptual model,a well-defined 3D F-doped Ni_(2)P-MoO_(2) heterostructure microrod array was rationally designed via an interfacial engineering strategy toward urea-assisted natural seawater *** a result,the F-Ni_(2)P-MoO_(2) exhibits eminently active and durable bifunctional catalysts for both HER and OER in acid,alkaline,and alkaline sea water-based *** in-situ analysis,we found that a thin amorphous layer of NiOOH,which is evolved from the Ni_(2)P during anodic reaction,is real catalytic active sites for the OER and UOR ***,such electrode-assembled urea-assisted natural seawater electrolyzer requires low voltages of 1.29 and 1.75 V to drive 10 and600 mA cm^(-2)and demonstrates superior durability by operating continuously for 100 h at 100 mA cm^(-2),beyond commercial Pt/C||RuO_(2) and most previous reports.

Acute inflammation occurring in gastric aberrant pancreas followed up by endoscopic ultrasonography

We describe a case of gastric aberrant pancreas with acute pancreatitis followed up with subsequent endoscopic ultrasound. A 20-year-old woman known to have aberrant pancreas in the stomach was admitted to our hospital because of severe epigastralgia. Laboratory tests showed slight C reactive protein elevation without hyperamylasemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a swollen submucosal lesion (SML) to a greater degree compared with the previous findings. Subsequent endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) revealed a swollen lesion of 35 mm in diameter. The internal echo-pattern was more hypoechoic than in the previous EUS. The border between the fourth layer (muscularis propria) and the SML was unclear. The anechoic lumen in the mass, considered as the ductal lumen, was dilated. Based on these results, we diagnosed the patient as having acute inflammation, resembling pancreatitis, in the aberrant pancreas.

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease Genes Identified in Non-Caucasians

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), including Graves’ disease (GD) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT), are among the commonest autoimmune disorders, affecting approximately 2% - 5% of the population. Epidemiological data support strong genetic influences on the development of AITD. The identification of genes placing individuals at an increased risk for the development of AITD has been a slow process. However, over the last 20 years or so real progress has been made with the mapping of novel loci, via a number of different approaches. The first AITD gene discovered, Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA)/Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), is associated with both GD and HT. Non-MHC genes that confer susceptibility to AITD can be classified into two groups: (1) immune-regulatory genes (e.g., CD40, CTLA-4, and PTPN22);(2) thyroid-specific genes—thyroglobulin and TSH receptor genes. These genes interact with environmental factors, such as infection, likely through epigenetic mechanisms to trigger disease. In this review, we will summarize the latest findings on AITD susceptibility genes in non-Caucasians.

Improvement of Emissions and Burning Limits in Burner Combustion using an Injector on the Concept of Fuel-Water Internally Rapid Mixing

This study tried to apply biomass fuel to clean burner combustion under high load conditions by water addition. A newly developed injector mixes fuel rapidly with water inside of the injector with support of atomizing air. The mixture composed of three-fluid is injected as spray into a flame stabilizer of burner. Investigation of emission performance of this injector shows that the internally rapid mixing type of injector is hopeful technique to introduce water into burner combustion. Combustion by this injector emits exceedingly less particulate matters at high load. NOx emission is strongly dependent on water flow rate.

A Power Grid Optimization Algorithm by Direct Observation of Manufacturing Cost Reduction

With the recent advances of the VLSI technologies, stabilizing the physical behavior of VLSI chips is becoming a very complicated problem. Power grid optimization is required to minimize the risks of timing error by IR drop, defects by electro migration (EM), and manufacturing cost by the chip size. This problem includes complicated tradeoff relationships. We propose a new approach by observing the direct objectives of manufacturing cost, and timing error risk caused by IR drop and EM. The manufacturing cost is based on yield for LSI chip. The optimization is executed in early phase of the physical design, and the purpose is to find the rough budget of decoupling capacitors that may cause block size increase. Rough budgeting of the power wire width is also determined simultaneously. The experimental result shows that our approach enables selection of a cost sensitive result or a performance sensitive result in early physical design phase.
