Most soft materials behave as if they were hardened when subjected to an impact force. The strain rate dependence of viscosity resistance is the reason for this behavior. The authors carried out drop impact tests on several types of soft materials under the condition of a flat frontal impact. The impact force waveform of soft materials was found to consist of a thorn-shaped waveform and a succeeding mountain-shaped waveform. Based on our experimental observations, we believe that a large viscosity resistance is rapidly changed to a small resistance in the course of the impact. In the present study, the cause of this distinct waveform is discussed based on a dynamics model. The study applies a standard linear solid (SLS) model in which the viscosity transient phenomenon is considered is applied. Three types of impact force waveforms of actual soft materials are simulated using the SLS model. Some features of the impact force waveform of soft materials can be explained using the SLS model.

AIM To investigate the therapeutic effect of combined integrin α6β4-targeted radioimmunotherapy(RIT) and PI3 K/m TOR inhibitor BEZ235 in a pancreatic cancer *** Phosphorylation of Akt, m TOR, the downstream effectors eukaryotic initiation factor 4 E binding protein 1(4 EBP1) and S6 ribosomal protein(S6) were evaluated in Bx PC-3 human pancreatic cancer cells treated with Yttrium-^(90)(^(90) Y) labeled anti-integrin α6β4 antibody(ITGA6 B4) and BEZ235 by western blotting. The cytotoxic effect of BEZ235 was investigated using a colony formation assay. Therapeutic efficacy enhancement by oral BEZ235 administration was assessed using mice bearing Bx PC-3 xenograft tumors. Tumor volume measurements and immunohistochemical analyses(cell proliferation marker Ki-67, DNA damage marker p-H2 AX and p-4 EBP1 staining) of tumors were performed for evaluation of combined treatment with ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 plus BEZ235, or each arm *** We found that phosphorylation of Akt(p-Akt), 4 EBP1(p-4 EBP1) and S6(p-S6) was inhibited by BEZ235. Colony formation in Bx PC-3 cells was additively suppressed by the combination of ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 and BEZ235. Pretreatment with BEZ235 before ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 exposure resulted in significant reduction of cells plating efficiency(PE)(0.54 ± 0.11 vs 2.81 ± 0.14 with 185 k Bq/m L ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 exposure, P < 0.01; 0.39 ± 0.08 vs 1.88 ± 0.09 with 370 k Bq/m L ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 exposure, P < 0.01) when 5 × 10~3 cells per dish were plated. In vivo, the combined treatment with ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 plus BEZ235 enhanced the inhibition of tumor growth and statistically significant differences of relative tumor volume were observed for 27 d after the treatment start date when compared with the ^(90) Y-ITGA6 B4 single injection treatment(1.03 ± 0.38 vs 1.5 ± 0.15 at Day 27, P < 0.05), and for 41 d when compared with the BEZ235 treatment alone(1.8 ± 0.7 vs 3.14 ± 1.19 at Day 41, P < 0.05). This research focused on preparation catalysts by natural zeolite for hydrocracking and to compare their catalytic reactivity with commercial catalyst. Clinoptilolite type natural zeolite of Tsagaantsav and paraffinic atmospheric residue of Tamsagbulag crude oil were used in this research. The Ni or Fe ion was loaded into the zeolite sample which was enriched and calcined previously, by ion exchange method. It is determined by X-ray diffraction analysis that structure of natural zeolite was not broken down during metal loading. The conversion of feedstock in hydrocracking, in with modified zeolite was used, was 22.5% higher than none catalytic process and 8.9% higher than commercial catalyst. It is proved that both of modified zeolite catalysts worked effectively as a catalyst in hydrocracking of atmospheric residue. Even so the contents of sulfur in middle and heavy fraction were 490 - 615 ppm, after hydrocracking with Ni/zeolite, Fe/zeolite catalysts. This result showed that the Ni/zeolite, Fe/zeolite catalysts were inactive at hydrodesulfurization, because the contents of sulfur in middle and heavy fraction were 370 - 478 ppmafter hydrocracking without catalyst. Process for sulfur removal is needed after hydrocracking with Ni/zeolite orFe/zeolite catalyst.

Various ocean energy technologies have been developed that harness several kinds of renewable energy resources of the ocean. However, these technologies suffer from problems such as high construction and maintenance costs, restrictive installation requirements and damage by extraordinary weather conditions. In this paper, we propose a lightweight and FPGD （flexible power generation device） that overcomes these problems. The FPGD essentially consists of piezoelectric films and silicon rubber. Because the FPGD is small and flexible, it is anticipated to efficiently convert fluid energy into electrical energy even when the fluid energy is low. We perform several experiments to confirm the effectiveness of the FPGD and we discuss the results.

Helicobacter pylori performs the unique action of assimilating exogenous non-esterified cholesterol into its cell membrane. This bacterium aggressively incorporates non-esterified cholesterol into the membrane, induces its glucosylation, and uses both non-esterified cholesterol and glucosylated cholesterols as membrane lipid compositions. The reason for this assimilation of non-esterified cholesterol into the cell membrane of H. pylori has eluded investigators for many years. Recent hypotheses posit that the sterol-uptake and sterol-glucosylation contribute to the survival of H. pylori cells in different ways. The incorporation of the non-esterified cholesterol into the cell membrane fortifies the resistance of H. pylori against the antibacterial actions of phosphatidylcholines, antibiotics, and bile salts. In parallel, the glucosylation of the non-esterified cholesterol incorporated into the cell membrane serves H. pylori in two ways. First, it helps the bacterium evade host immune responses, such as phagocytosis by macrophages and activation of antigen-specific T cells. Second, it detoxifies sterols fatal to the bacterium via a novel action of sterol glucosylation recently described in another report from our group. The reluctance of H. pylori to absorb esterified cholesterol remains unexplained. A recent study by our group has demonstrated that the phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in the outer membrane of H. pylori serves as a steroid-binding lipid the incorporation of non-esterified cholesterol into the membrane. We have also discovered that the myristic acid (C14:0) molecule attached to the PE of this bacterium plays an important role in the selective binding of non-esterified cholesterol but not esterified cholesterol.

BACKGROUND Postgastrectomy syndromes(PGS) after curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer are influenced by not only gastrectomy type but also by background factors. Recently, a nationwide PGS study was performed using the Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale-45(PGSAS-45) *** To determine the influence of each background factor on PGS for each gastrectomy type using PGS assessment study(PGSAS) data as an additional analysis. METHODS The data of 2368 patients were obtained from the PGSAS. This included patients undergoing distal gastrectomy(DG) with Billroth I reconstruction, DG with Roux-en-Y reconstruction, total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y, proximal gastrectomy, pylorus-preserving gastrectomy(PPG), and local resection. Multiple regression analysis was performed to explore the independent effects of each background factor on the main outcome measures(MOMs) of PGSAS-45 for each gastrectomy type. The background factors included postoperative period, age, sex, surgical approach(laparoscopic or open), and the status of the celiac branch of the vagal *** The MOMs of DG and PPG were highly affected by background factors, whereas those of total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y, proximal gastrectomy, and local resection were not. Worse PGS were found in females, whereas a longer postoperative period alleviated some of the MOMs. For DG and PPG, a laparoscopic approach and preservation of the celiac branch improved several *** Various background factors affected PGS, and their influence varied with the type of gastrectomy performed. Laparoscopic surgery and celiac branch preservation can improve PGS in patients undergoing DG and PPG.

AIM To investigate the detrimental impact of loss of reservoir capacity by comparing total gastrectomy(TGRY) and distal gastrectomy with the same Rouxen-Y(DGRY) reconstruction. The study was conducted using an integrated questionnaire, the Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale(PGSAS)-45, recently developed by the Japan Postgastrectomy Syndrome Working *** The PGSAS-45 comprises 8 items from the Short Form-8, 15 from the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and 22 newly selected items. Uni-and multivariate analysis was performed on 868 questionnaires completed by patients who underwent either TGRY(n = 393) or DGRY(n = 475) for stage I gastric cancer(52 institutions). Multivariate analysis weighed of six explanatory variables, including the type of gastrectomy(TGRY/DGRY), interval after surgery, age, gender, surgical approach(laparoscopic/open), and whether the celiac branch of the vagus nerve was preserved/divided on the quality of life(QOL).RESULTS The patients who underwent TGRY experienced the poorer QOL compared to DGRY in the 15 of 19 main outcome measures of PGSAS-45. Moreover, multiple regression analysis indicated that the type of gastrectomy, TGRY, most strongly and broadly impaired the postoperative QOL among six explanatory variables. CONCLUSION The results of the present study suggested that TGRY had a certain detrimental impact on the postoperative QOL, and the loss of reservoir capacity could be a major cause.

Relationship between Dysphagia and Serum Substance P Level in Chronic Central Nervous Disease

Purpose: We compared serum substance P (SP) levels in underlying diseases and dysphagia, or its absence, in patients with cerebrovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease or Alzheimer’s disease, to investigate the relationship between dysphagia and serum SP in chronic central nervous disease. Methods: Subjects comprised 94 patients admitted to a hospital or nursing home during the 5 years between April 2007 and April 2012 with central nervous symptoms. Serum SP levels were measured by enzyme immunoassay, and video endoscopy using a nasal endoscope in all subjects to objectively evaluate swallowing function. Results: Serum SP level was very similar in central nervous disease without dysphagia and controls without central nervous disease. Conversely, serum SP level was significantly lower in central nervous disease with dysphagia. When comparing underlying diseases, serum SP was significantly lower in Parkinson’s disease than in other disease groups (cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease). Looking at changes in serum SP levels over time after disease onset, SP level was significantly low in subjects without dysphagia at the time of onset who went on to develop dysphagia during the disease course, whereas serum SP level tended to be higher in subjects with dysphagia at the time of onset and improvement during the disease course. With Parkinson’s disease and cerebrovascular disease, serum SP was low, particularly in subjects thought to have severe damage to the basal ganglia. Conclusion: Serum SP is generally thought to decrease in patients with cerebrovascular disease accompanied by dysphagia, but these results suggest that serum SP levels can be expected to improve to some extent, even if dysphagia is present at disease onset, assuming, for example, that some basal ganglia function remains. Positive therapeutic interventions such as swallowing rehabilitation should be promoted in such patients, with the goal of improving swallowing function.

Improvement in Surface Roughness and Hardness for Carbon Steel by Slide Burnishing Process

Slide burnishing process, which is a surface severe plastic deformation technique, offers an attractive post-machining alternative due to its chip-less and relatively simple operations. The purpose of the present work is to investigate effects of initial turned surface roughness on the burnished surface roughness and hardness in slide burnishing. The carbon steel samples those have different roughness surfaces being treated were prepared by turning by varying the feed. Slide burnishing was then carried out by a silicon nitride ceramic ball that was loaded and fed on the turned surface of a rotating specimen using a lathe machine. It was found that the turned surfaces were smoothed drastically by the burnishing process, and that the Ra and Rz values were reduced at most by a factor of 52 and 21, respectively. However, the smoothing effect of burnishing has limit, and the limited maximum height roughness (Rz*) for burnishing smoothing increased under a higher burnishing force and with a larger ball diameter. When the Rz values of initial turned surfaces were less than the Rz*, the roughness of the burnished surfaces did not depend on the roughness of the initial turned surface and the burnishing force. There was no significant difference in the burnished microstructure and hardness under a specific burnishing force among the initial turned surface roughness, while a higher burnishing force caused a greater increase in surface hardness.
