Studies on Composting Spent Coffee Grounds by <i>Aspergillus sp</i>and <i>Aspergillus sp</i>in Aerobic Static Batch Temperature Control

Spent Coffee Ground (SCG) is characterized by high organic content, in the form of insoluble polysaccharides bound and phenol compounds. Phenol compounds are toxic to nature and are a cause of environmental pollution. Composting method of this study is aerobic static batch composting with temperature control with adding activators of some fungi such as Aspergillus sp, and Penicillium sp. The purpose of the research is to fill the research gap from previous studies of spent coffee grounds compost, which requires a long time in composting, so that if it is used directly on the soil and plants, the positive effect also requires a long time. The result of composting for 28 days with this method is that mature compost has black crumb and normal pH, with characteristics of C/N ratio below 10: C1 (7.06), C2 (6.99). This value is far from the control with a C/N ratio of 8.33. Decompose rate of macromolecule are above 40% for lignin and 70% for cellulose. Implementation of compost in radish plants, resulting Germination Index above 80% which indicates that the compost is ripe: control (92.39%), C1 (183.88%), C2 (191.86%). The results of the analysis with FTIR also showed that the compost was mature and stable, and rich in minerals. So, it can be concluded that this composting method can speed up composting time and optimize the results of compost produced.

Evaluation of Isoflavones as Allelochemicals with Strong Allelopathic Activities of Kudzu Using Protoplast Co-Culture Method with Digital Image Analysis

The inhibitory allelopathic activity of Pueraria montana (Kudzu), and activities of two putative allelochemical isoflavones, puerarin and daidzein, were evaluated using the protoplast co-culture method with digital image analysis using lettuce as a recipient (DIA-PP method). Cotyledon protoplasts of Kudzu were isolated using Cellulase R10 and Driselase 20 in 0.6 M mannitol solution. Optimal hormonal condition and density for growth of Kudzu protoplasts were surveyed. Medium for co-culture of Kudzu or isoflavones with lettuce protoplasts was 50 μl liquid MS basal medium containing 1 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 0.1 μM benzyladenine, 3% sucrose, and 0.4 M or 0.6 M mannitol. Protoplast division of lettuce was strongly inhibited by Kudzu at a low density (104/ml). Slightly less inhibition by Kudzu on cell wall formation and yellow pigment accumulation stages of lettuce growth was also observed. Puerarin did not inhibit the growth of lettuce protoplasts at three growth stages but slightly stimulated growth at high concentrations. By contrast, daidzein, aglycon of puerarin, inhibited growth at three stages of lettuce protoplast growth and strongly inhibited cell division at 100 μM. Daidzein might be one cause of the strong inhibitory allelopathic activity of Kudzu. Grade of inhibitory activities was compared with that of other allelopathic plants including an invader plant and their allelochemicals studied using the DIA-PP method.

Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are non-renewable materials and widely in many industries such as agricultural sectors. On the other hand, the demand of P and K as fertilizers increases which following global population. The nutrient source of P and K which get from biomass waste i.e. incinerated of activated sludge and coffee husk biochar, respectively. The present study was conducted recovery of P and K as struvite-K (KMgPO4·6H2O) precipitates. The results showed that aluminium was released simultaneously with P from incinerated activated sludge with precipitate of Al:P of 1:1, K:P of 0.5, and Mg:P of 3. However, aluminium was inhibited to form struvite-K. Then, we examined cation removal especially for removed Al by dissolved 0.5 M HNO3 and the solution was mixed with KH2PO4 and MgCl2

Effects of Pre-Schooler Lifestyle on the Circadian Rhythm of Secretory Immunoglobulin A

Assuming that secretory immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) in pre-schoolers is influenced by wake-up time, bedtime, sleeping duration and activity, the current study examined the influence of basic pre-schooler lifestyle on the circadian rhythm of s-IgA. We conducted a questionnaire survey on lifestyle and measured steps, heart rate and salivary s-IgA in 44 pre-schoolers aged 4 or 5 years old. Saliva was collected over 2 days at six time points: bedtime, upon waking up, upon arriving at nursery school, before lunch, after lunch and upon going home. To obtain relatively reliable s-IgA values, the s-IgA concentration/total protein concentration ratio (referred to as s-IgA/T.P.) was calculated. Relationship between the s-IgA/T.P. and heart rate, steps, wake-up time, bedtime and sleeping duration was then examined using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Accordingly, pre-schooler lifestyle had the following effect on circadian rhythm of s-IgA: 1) s-IgA/T.P. values were higher upon waking up than at other measurement time points;2) pre-schoolers with considerable physical activity had high s-IgA/T.P. at bedtime and upon waking up;and 3) pre-schoolers with long sleeping durations and early bedtime had high s-IgA/T.P. upon waking up. Thus, our results confirmed that pre-schoolers’ lifestyle habits, such as bedtime, sleeping duration, physical activity, had an effect on the circadian rhythm of s-IgA.

Objective: This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the 1-year survival of patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent pancreatectomy following neoadjuvant treatment with preoperatively detectable clinical parameters. Extended pancreatectomy is necessary to achieve complete tumor removal in borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer. However, it increases postoperative morbidity and mortality rates, and should be balanced with potential benefit of long-term ***: The medical records of patients who underwent pancreatectomy following neoadjuvant treatment from January 2005 to December 2016 at Severance Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Medical records were collected from five international institutions from Japan and Singapore for external ***: A total of 113 patients were enrolled. The nomogram for predicting 1-year disease-specific survival was created based on 5 clinically detectable preoperative parameters as follows: age(year), symptom(no/yes), tumor size at initial diagnostic stage(cm), preoperative serum carbohydrate antigen(CA) 19-9 level after neoadjuvant treatment(<34/≥34 U/m L), and planned surgery [pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD)(pylorus-preserving PD)/distal pancreatectomy(DP)/total pancreatectomy]. Model performance was assessed for discrimination and *** calibration plot showed good agreement between actual and predicted survival probabilities;the the Greenwood-Nam-D’Agostino(GND) goodness-of-fit test showed that the model was well calibrated(χ~2=8.24,P=0.5099). A total of 84 patients were used for external validation. Individual Income Status Correlates with Chronic Kidney Disease in Japan beyond Metabolic Risk Factors: Cross Sectional Study

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a pre-condition for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing hemodialysis, as well as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is vital that CKD prevention measures be established. In particular, socioeconomic status (SES), as represented by income, contributes to non-communicable diseases like CKD. The purpose of this study was to examine the independent association between CKD and individual SES in Japan, with consideration of other metabolic risks. Methods: In the present study, we analyzed the 2011 National Health and Nutrition Survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. Specifically, we analyzed 3,557 people out of 8,762 whose serum creatinine was measured. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of CKD by income distinction, after adjustment for age and metabolic risks (obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension), which were assessed at the medical examination. Results: CKD was found in 385 participants (10.8%) and was associated with greater age, obesity, higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and glycated hemoglobin, and lower levels of hemoglobin and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The adjusted model indicated a significant association between lower income and CKD: the OR of the low income group (<2 million yen) was 1.33 (95% confidence interval: 1.01 - 1.78) in comparison with the high income group. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate a substantial relationship between individual lower income status and CKD in Japan, where healthcare is easy to access. To prevent ESKD and cardiovascular diseases, early detection of CKD and its metabolic risks is necessary, especially among the socioeconomically vulnerable population.

The Kinetics of Pb Removal from Brass Scrap Using Compound Separation

2 wt% Ca was added to molten brass containing 3.2 wt% Pb. The composition and grain size of the formed Ca-Pb compound were examined in detail using SEM-EDS and XRD. This revealed that the composition of the Ca-Pb compound depends on the grain size of the liquid phase Pb and the diffusion phenomenon of the Ca in the Ca-Pb compound formed on the surface of the Pb. When the Pb has a fine grain, a compound composed only of Ca-Pb compounds is formed. When the grain size of the Pb is several μm, Ca-Pb compounds containing unreacted Pb in the center are formed. These compounds aggregate into a larger compound grain. From the evaluation of the floating force (the resultant force of the weight and buoyancy of the Ca-Pb compounds formed) and the rising terminal velocity of the Ca-Pb compound within the molten brass, it was found that the floating force and rising terminal velocity depend on the composition and grain size of the Ca-Pb compound. It was found that since Ca-Pb compounds with a floating force greater than 10-6 g ·cm/s2 have a very large rising terminal velocity, they reach the surface of the molten brass in a short time after compound formation and then continue to float on the surface of the molten brass. Thus they can be removed by skimming. The effects of the grain size of the Ca-Pb compound on the floating force and the rising terminal velocity were greater than those of the composition of the Ca-Pb compound.

Predictor Analysis of Mid-Term Left Atrial Reverse Remodeling after Mitral Valve Surgery

Objective: The aim of this study was to predict mid-term left atrial reverse remodeling after mitral valve surgery. Patients and Methods: Echocardiographic data was obtained preoperatively and at follow-up from 105 patients who underwent mitral valve surgery. Left atrial volume (LAV) was decreased by >30% from baseline in 43 patients (group A), but not in 62 patients (group B). Results: Patients in group A were younger (p = 0.0029). Male was more (p = 0.05) and prosthesis size was bigger in group A (p = 0.005). Only age was a predictor of left atrial reverse remodeling in a logistic regression model (OR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.88 - 0.99;p = 0.03). Late mean trans-mitral pressure gradient was lower in group A than in group B (p = 0.01). There was a weak correlation between the change in left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd) and LAV (correlation coefficient 0.27, 95% CI 0.07 - 0.45;p = 0.008). Survival and freedom from major adverse cardiac events did not differ between the groups (p = 0.31 and p = 0.87 by log-rank test). Conclusions: Age was the only predictor of left atrial reverse remodeling. There was a weak correlation between changes in LVDd and LAV.
