Background： Water dropwort （Oenanthejavanica） as a popular traditional medicine in Asia shows various biological properties including antioxidant activity. In this study, we firstly examined the neuroprotective effect of Oenanthejavanica extract （OJE） in the hippocampal comus ammonis 1 region （CA 1 region） of the gerbil subjected to transient cerebral ischemia. Methods： Gerbils were established by the occlusion of common carotid arteries for 5 min. The neuroprotective effect of OJE was estimated by cresyl violet staining. In addition, 4 antioxidants （copper, zinc superoxide dismutase [SOD], manganese SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase） immunoreactivities were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Results： Pyramidal neurons in the CA1 region showed neuronal death at 5 days postischemia; at this point in time, all antioxidants immunoreactivities disappeared in CA1 pyramidal neurons and showed 100 mg/kg, OJE protected CA 1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic damage in many nonpyramidal cells. Treatment with 200 mg/kg, not In addition, 200 mg/kg OJE treatment increased or maintained antioxidants immunoreactivities. Especially, among the antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase immunoreactivity was effectively increased in the CA 1 pyramidal neurons of the OJE-treated sham-operated and ischemia-operated groups. Conclusion： Our present results indicate that treatment with OJE can protect neurons from transient ischemic damage and that the neuroprotective effect may be closely associated with increased or maintained intracellular antioxidant enzymes by OJE.

This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of Pb contaminant dispersal from an abandoned mine. For the study, 23 samples of sediment and soil were collected around the abandoned mine located in southwest of Korea. Pb concentrations and isotope ratios of sediment samples were analyzed through ICP-OES (Optima 5300 DV, Perkin Elmer) and MC-ICP-MS (Plasma II, Nu), respectively. The sediment samples collected in the main stream from the mine entrance showed high Pb concentrations of 139 - 1079 mg/kg, while Pb concentrations of the other sites were 19 - 29 mg/kg. Pb isotope ratios of the main stream sediments were 2.4854 - 2.4883 for 208Pb/207Pb and 1.1693 - 1.1740 for 206Pb/207Pb. On the other hand, the Pb isotopic compositions of sediments collected from the other sites were clearly different from those of ore deposits. The Pb isotope ratios versus inverse concentrations plot showed high linear correlation between the main stream, the tributary stream and one of the downstream sites representing the two end member mixing system between these sites. According to the binary mixing equation, the relative contribution of Pb pollutants from the abandoned mine to the downstream area were approximately 33% - 36%.

Lymphangioma is an uncommon malformation of lymphatic system. Multiple colonic lymphangioma named as lymphangiomatosis is considered an extremely rare disease. Although lymphangioma is a benign tumor and most colonic lymphangiomas do not cause symptoms and do not require treatment, resection of lymphangioma is necessary in the presence of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, intussusceptions. We report a case of colonic lymphangiomatosis in a man who presented with abdominal discomfort and anemia, which was diagnosed and treated with endoscopic snare polypectomy.

AIM: To evaluate the association of glutathione S-transferase mu (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta (GSTT1) null genotypes with the risk of gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) in a South Korean ***: We conducted a population-based, largescale case-control study including 2213 GCs, 1829 CRCs, and 1699 controls. Null and non-null genotypesof GSTM1 and GSTT1 were determined using realtime ***: The null genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were not signifi cantly associated with elevated risk of gastric (OR = 1.070, 95% CI = 0.935-1.224; OR = 1.101, 95% CI = 0.963-1.259, respectively) or colorec-tal cancer (OR = 1.065, 95% CI = 0.923-1.228; OR = 1.041, 95% CI = 0.903-1.200, respectively). The frequency of the combined null GST genotype was not different between the two cancer groups and controls. Moreover, smoking, drinking, and age did not modify the association between these genotypes and the risk of gastric or colorectal ***: GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were not associated with increased risk of GC or CRC in Koreans.

Entacapone,a catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor,can strengthen the therapeutic effects of levodopa on the treatment of Parkinson’s ***,few studies are reported on whether entacapone can affect hippocampal neurogenesis in *** investigate the effects of entacapone,a modulator of dopamine,on proliferating cells and immature neurons in the mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus,60 mice(7 weeks old)were randomly divided into a vehicle-treated group and the groups treated with 10,50,or 200 mg/kg *** results showed that 50 and 200 mg/kg entacapone increased the exploration time for novel object *** staining results revealed that after entacapone treatment,the numbers of Ki67-positive proliferating cells,doublecortin-positive immature neurons,and phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein(pCREB)-positive cells were significantly *** blot analysis results revealed that treatment with tyrosine kinase receptor B(TrkB)receptor antagonist significantly decreased the exploration time for novel object recognition and inhibited the expression of phosphorylated TrkB and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).Entacapone treatment antagonized the effects of TrkB receptor *** results suggest that entacapone treatment promoted hippocampal neurogenesis and improved memory function through activating the BDNF-TrkB-pCREB *** study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Seoul National University(approval ***-130730-1)on February 24,2014.

In this study, by using the response speed and the number of errors resulting from the children’s concentration test through the fuzzy inference system and comparing it to the theta which is one of the EEG’s parameter to find the level of concentration. Targeting 21(Male 12, Female 9) healthy children between the ages of 10 - 14, the test was conducted one time with a duration of 14 minutes. For the first 5 minutes the children were listening to the Bach’s Air on a G string having a steady state and the next 9 minutes the children were subjected to the external stimuli audiogenic stimulation that induces attention concentration. When the number 3 was heard, children were subjected to press down on the spacebar to check the response speed and the number of errors. By conducting computerized neurocognitive function test to compare the theta wave related to the concentration with the response speed and the number of errors that determines the attention concentration through the fuzzy system, the data from 15 children out of 21 have shown the results for the concentration. In order to check the concentration level, a fuzzy inference system which was designed by the user could be used.

AIM: To investigate whether S100A4 played an important role in the development or progression of colorectal ***: A total of 124 colorectal adenocarcinoma tissue specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for the expression of S100A4 protein and subsequently investigated for the gene mutations in the coding region of S100A4 gene. The specimens were collected over a 3-year period in the laboratories at our large teaching hospital in Seoul, Republic of ***: Normal colonic epithelium either failed to express or showed focal weak expression of S100A4. Moderate to strong cytoplasmic expression of S100A4 was seen in 69(55.6%) of the 124 colorectal carcinoma tissue specimens.S100A4 expression was detected in 43 (69.4%) of 62specimens with lymph node metastasis. Statistically,overexpression of S100A4 was significantly associated with Dukes' stage and lymph node metastasis. Nuclear staining was also observed in 24 (19.4%) of 124 samples and closely associated with Dukes' stage. However, there was no significant correlation between overexpression of S100A4and other investigated clinico-pathologic parameters,including tumor localization, tumor size, and survival *** mutational analysis, no gene mutation was found in the analyzed genomic area of colorectal ***: Overexpression of 5100A4 may be closely related with the aggressiveness of colorectal carcinoma.

In this study, we fabricated a sapphire based fiber-optic radiation sensor. To evaluate the fiber- optic radiation sensor, we measured the spectrum and intensity of the luminescence generated from the fiber-optic radiation sensor according to the thickness of the PMMA block by irradiation of gamma rays emitted from a Co-60 source. And the result was compared with the value calculated from the formula of Lambert-Beer.
