We investigated the possibility of producing chicken alpha interferon(ChIFN-α) in transgenic plants. The cDNA encoding ChIFN-α was introduced into lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.) plants by using an agro-infiltration transient expression system. The ChIFN-α gene was correctly transcribed and translated in the lettuce plants according to RT-PCR and ELISA assays. Re-combinant protein exhibited antiviral activity in vitro by inhibition of vesicular stomatitis virus(VSV) replication on chicken embryonic fibroblast(CEF). The results demonstrate that biologically active avian cytokine with potential pharmaceutical ap-plications could be expressed in transgenic lettuce plants and that it is possible to generate interferon protein in forage plants for preventing infectious diseases of poultry.

Solid-state refrigeration which is environmentally benign has attracted considerable attention.Mechanocaloric(mC)materials,in which the phase transitions can be induced by mechanical stresses,represent one of the most promising types of solid-state caloric materials.Herein,we have developed a thermodynamic phenomenological model and predicted extraordinarily large elastocaloric(eC)strengths for the(111)-oriented metal-free perovskite ferroelectric[MDABCO](NH_(4))I_(3)thin-films.The predicted room temperature isothermal eC ΔS_(eC)/Δσ(eC entropy change under unit stress change)and adiabatic eCΔTeC/Δσ(eC temperature change under unit stress change)for[MDABCO](NH_(4))I_(3) are−60.0 J K^(−1)kg^(−1)GPa^(−1) and 17.9 K GPa^(−1),respectively,which are 20 times higher than the traditional ferroelectric oxides such as BaTiO_(3) thin films.We have also demonstrated that the eC performance can be improved by reducing the Young’s modulus or enhancing the thermal expansion coefficient(which could be realized through chemical doping,etc.).We expect these discoveries to spur further interest in the potential applications of metal-free organic ferroelectrics materials towards next-generation eC refrigeration devices.

Background:Computed tomography images are easy to misjudge because of their complexity,especially images of solitary pulmonary nodules,of which diagnosis as benign or malignant is extremely important in lung cancer treatment.Therefore,there is an urgent need for a more effective strategy in lung cancer diagnosis.In our study,we aimed to externally validate and revise the Mayo model,and a new model was established.Methods:A total of 1450 patients from three centers with solitary pulmonary nodules who underwent surgery were included in the study and were divided into training,internal validation,and external validation sets(n=849,365,and 236,respectively).External verification and recalibration of the Mayo model and establishment of new logistic regression model were performed on the training set.Overall performance of each model was evaluated using area under receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC).Finally,the model validation was completed on the validation data set.Results:The AUC of the Mayo model on the training set was 0.653(95%confidence interval[CI]:0.613–0.694).After re-estimation of the coefficients of all covariates included in the original Mayo model,the revised Mayo model achieved an AUC of 0.671(95%CI:0.635–0.706).We then developed a new model that achieved a higher AUC of 0.891(95%CI:0.865–0.917).It had an AUC of 0.888(95%CI:0.842–0.934)on the internal validation set,which was significantly higher than that of the revised Mayo model(AUC:0.577,95%CI:0.509–0.646)and the Mayo model(AUC:0.609,95%CI,0.544–0.675)(P<0.001).The AUC of the new model was 0.876(95%CI:0.831–0.920)on the external verification set,which was higher than the corresponding value of the Mayo model(AUC:0.705,95%CI:0.639–0.772)and revised Mayo model(AUC:0.706,95%CI:0.640–0.772)(P<0.001).Then the prediction model was presented as a nomogram,which is easier to generalize.Conclusions:After external verification and recalibration of the Mayo model,the results show that they are not suitable for the prediction of malignant pulmonary nod

Purpose:To study the clinical effectiveness of the topical application of tranexamic acid in hand tendon release.Methods:This was a randomized controlled trial conducted after receiving approval from the local ethics committee according to guidelines from the Helsinki Declaration.Eighty patients who underwent hand tendon release operation in our hospital from January 2021 to December 2022 were included and randomly divided into 2 groups.Patients in the tranexamic acid group(40 cases)received intraoperative topical application of 2 g of tranexamic acid after tendon release,while patients in the conventional group(40 cases)did not receive topical application of tranexamic acid during operation.The operation time,perioperative hemoglobin changes,total blood loss,incidence of early postoperative complications,and total active movement(TAM)before surgery and 6 months after surgery were compared between the 2 groups.The continuous variable which follows normal distribution expressed by mean±SD and used t-test to compare between groups.Meanwhile,categorical variables were used by Chi-square test,and a p<0.05 indicated that the differences were statistically significant.Results:Both groups were followed up for 7-18 months,with a mean of 10.3 months.Postoperative decrease in hemoglobin was significantly less in the tranexamic acid group than in the conventional group(t=7.611,p<0.001).The total blood loss in the tranexamic acid group(74.33±20.50)mL was less than that in the conventional group(83.05±17.73)mL,and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.05).Both groups showed improvement in thumb/finger flexion and extension range of motion after surgery,and the TAM improved compared with those before surgery,and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.001).The TAM improved more significantly in the tranexamic acid group(87.68°±10.44°)than in the conventional group(80.47°±10.93°)at 6 months after surgery,with a statistically significant difference(t=3.013,p<0.001).There was no significant difference in opera

Mirizzi syndrome is a serious complication of gallstone disease.It is caused by the impacted stones in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct.One of the features of Mirizzi syndrome is severe inflammation or dense fibrosis at the Calot’s triangle.In our clinical practice,bile duct,branches of right hepatic artery and right portal vein clinging to gallbladder infundibulum are often observed due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum.The intraoperative damage of branches of right hepatic artery occurs more easily than that of bile duct,all of which are hidden pitfalls for surgeons.Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP)and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)are the preferable tools for the diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome.Anterograde cholecystectomy in Mirizzi syndrome is easy to damage branches of right hepatic artery and bile duct due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum.Subtotal cholecystectomy is an easy,safe and definitive approach to Mirizzi syndrome.When combined with the application of ERCP,a laparoscopic management of Mirizzi syndrome by well-trained surgeons is feasible and safe.The objective of this review was to highlight its existing problems:(1)low preoperative diagnostic rate,(2)easy to damage bile duct and branches of right hepatic artery,and(3)high concomitant gallbladder carcinoma.Meanwhile,the review aimed to discuss the possible therapeutic strategies:(1)to enhance its preoperative recognition by imaging findings,and(2)to avoid potential pitfalls during surgery.

BACKGROUND We report a low-birth-weight child(1.8 kg)with neonatal type III congenital esophageal atresia(CEA)combined with symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus(PDA).After comprehensive evaluation,esophageal anastomosis was performed on postnatal day 11 after excluding surgical contraindications,and arterial catheter ligation was performed at the same time.Concurrent surgery for CEA combined with PDA has not been clearly reported in the literature.CASE SUMMARY We report a 6-day-old female child with type III CEA and PDA.The patient presented with foam at the mouth after birth,cough and shortness of breath after feeding.At another hospital,she was considered to have neonatal pneumonia,neonatal jaundice and congenital heart disease and transferred to our hospital.After iodine oil radiography of the esophagus and echocardiography we con-firmed diagnosis of CEA and PDA.The diameter of the PDA was 8 mm,with obvious left to right shunting.We performed right rear extrapleural orificium fistula ligation and esophageal anastomosis,and ligation of PDA via left axilla straight incision after 5 d of hospitalization.The operations were successful,and the incision healed after 12 d,and the patient was discharged.We re-examined the patient 1 mo after surgery.She did not vomit when she ate rice flour.Esophageal angiography showed no stricture of the anastomotic stoma.The patient weighed 3.2 kg.CONCLUSION For CEA patients with multiple risk factors,comprehensive,timely and accurate diagnosis and evaluation,and early treatment may improve prognosis.

A new measurement method for the spatial distribution of neutron beam flux in boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)is being developed based on the two-dimensional Micromegas detector.To address the issue of long processing times in traditional offline position reconstruction methods,this paper proposes a field programmable gate array based online position reconstruction method utilizing the micro-time projection chamber principle.This method encapsulates key technical aspects:a self-adaptive serial link technique built upon the dynamical adjustment of the delay chain length,fast sorting,a coordinate-matching technique based on the mapping between signal timestamps and random access memory(RAM)addresses,and a precise start point-merging technique utilizing a circular combined RAM.The performance test of the selfadaptive serial link shows that the bit error rate of the link is better than 10-12 at a confidence level of 99%,ensuring reliable data transmission.The experiment utilizing the readout electronics and Micromegas detector shows a spatial resolution of approximately 1.4 mm,surpassing the current method’s resolution level of 5 mm.The beam experiment confirms that the readout electronics system can obtain the flux spatial distribution of neutron beams online,thus validating the feasibility of the position reconstruction method.The online position reconstruction method avoids traditional methods,such as bubble sorting and traversal searching,simplifies the design of the logic firmware,and reduces the time complexity from O(n2)to O(n).This study contributes to the advancement in measuring neutron beam flux for BNCT.

The Fengcheng Formation is a crucial source rock and the primary reservoir for oil accumulation in the Mahu Sag.Crude oils are distributed throughout the Fengcheng Formation,ranging from the edge to the interior of the sag in the southern Mahu Sag.These crude oils originate from in-situ source rocks in shallowly buried areas and the inner deep sag.During migration,the crude oil from the inner deep sag affects the source rocks close to carrier beds,leading to changes in the organic geochemical characteristics of the source rocks.These changes might alter source rock evaluations and oil-source correlation.Based on data such as total organic carbon(TOC),Rock-Eval pyrolysis of source rocks,and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)of the saturated fraction,and considering the geological characteristics of the study area,we define the identification characteristics of source rock affected by migrated hydrocarbons and establish the various patterns of influence that migrated hydrocarbons have on the source rock of the Fengcheng Formation in the southern Mahu Sag.The source rocks of the Fengcheng Formation are mostly fair to good,containing mainly Type II organic matter and being thermally mature enough to generate oil.Source rocks affected by migrated hydrocarbons exhibit relatively high hydrocarbon contents(S1/TOC>110 mg HC/g TOC,Extract/TOC>30%,HC:hydrocarbon),relatively low Rock-Eval Tmax values,and relatively high tricyclic terpane contents with a descending and mountain-shaped distribution.Furthermore,biomarker composition parameters indicate a higher thermal maturity than in-situ source rocks.Through a comparison of the extract biomarker fingerprints of adjacent reservoirs and mudstones in different boreholes,three types of influence patterns of migrated hydrocarbons are identified:the edge-influence of thin sandstone-thick mudstone,the mixed-influence of sandstone-mudstone interbedded,and the full-influence of thick sandstone-thin mudstone.This finding reminds us that the influence of migrated hydrocarbons

The backreaming operation plays a significant role in safe drilling for horizontal wellbores, while it may cause severe stuck pipe accidents. To lower the risk of the stuck pipe in backreaming operations, the mechanism of cuttings transport needs to be carefully investigated. In this research, a transient cuttings transport with multiple flow patterns model is developed to predict the evolution of cuttings transported in the annulus while backreaming. The established model can provide predictions of the distribution of cuttings bed along the wellbore considering the bulldozer effect caused by large-size drilling tools(LSDTs). The sensitivity analyses of the size of LSDTs, and backreaming operating parameters are conducted in Section 4. And a new theory is proposed to explain the mechanism of cuttings transport in the backreaming operation, in which both the bit and LSDTs have the “cleaning effect” and “plugging effect”.The results demonstrate that the cuttings bed in annuli is in a state of dynamic equilibrium, but the overall trend and the distribution pattern are obvious. First, larger diameters and longer drilling tools could lead to a higher risk of the stuck pipe. Second, we find that it is not the case that the higher flow rate is always better for hole cleaning, so three flow-rate intervals are discussed separately under the given conditions. When the “dangerous flow rate”(35 L/s in Case 4),the higher the flow rate, the better the cleaning effect of cuttings beds. Third, an interval of tripping velocity called “dangerous velocity” is proposed, in which the cuttings bed accumulation near the LSDTs is more serious than those of other tripping velocities.
