Plate tectonics in the twenty-first century

Plate tectonics was originally established as a kinematic theory of global tectonics,in which the Earth’s rigid outer layer,the lithosphere,consists of different size plates that move relative to each other along divergent,convergent or transform boundaries overlying the ductile asthenosphere.It comprises three elements:rigid lithosphere plates,ductile asthenosphere,and coupled movement systems.It operates through the interlinked processes of continental drift,seafloor spreading and lithospheric subduction,resulting in the generation,modification and demise of lithospheres throughout geological time.The system of lithospheric plates in horizontal and vertical movements forms the spatiotemporal linkages of matter and energy between the surface and interior of Earth,advancing the kinematic theory with a dynamic explanation.While top-down tectonics through lithospheric subduction plays a key role in the operation of plate tectonics,it is balanced for the conservation of both mass and momentum on the spherical Earth by bottom-up tectonics through asthenospheric upwelling to yield seafloor spreading after continental breakup.The gravity-driven subduction of cool lithosphere proceeds through convergence between two plates on one side,and rollback of the subducting slab makes the vacancy for upwelling of the hotter asthenosphere to form active rifting in backarc sites.Plate convergence is coupled with plate divergence between two plates along mid-ocean ridges on the other side,inducing passive rifting for seafloor spreading as a remote effect.Thus,plate tectonics is recognizable in rock records produced by tectonic processes along divergent and convergent plate margins.Although the asthenospheric upwelling along fossil suture zones may result in continental breakup,seafloor spreading is only induced by gravitational pull of the subducting oceanic slab on the remote side.Therefore,the onset and operation of plate tectonics are associated with a series of plate divergent-convergent coupling systems,and they are critically

First finding of continental deep subduction in the Sesia Zone of the Western Alps and implications for subduction dynamics

Continental deep subduction after the closure of large oceanic basins is commonly ascribed to the gravitational pull of the subducting oceanic slab.However,it is not clear how continental lithosphere adjacent to small oceanic basins was subducted to mantle depths.The Sesia Zone in the Western Alps provides an excellent target for exploration of subduction dynamics in such a tectonic setting.Here we report the first finding of coesite in a jadeite-bearing orthogneiss from the Sesia Zone,providing the first evidence for deep subduction of the continental crust to mantle depths for ultrahigh-pressure(UHP)metamorphism in this zone.Three coesite inclusions were identified by laser Raman spectroscopy in two garnet grains.Based on zircon U-Pb dating and trace element analysis, the UHP metamorphic age was constrained to be 76.0 ±1.0 Ma.The phase equilibrium modeling yields peak metamorphic pressures of2.8-3.3 GPa,demonstrating the continental deep subduction to mantle depths of>80 km.The subducted continental crust was a rifted hyperextended continental margin,which was converted to the passive continental margin during seafloor spreading and then deeply subducted during the oblique convergence between the Adria microplate and Eurasian plate in the Late Cretaceous.Because the slab pull could only play a limited role in closing small oceanic basins for continental collision,the distal push of either continental breakup or seafloor spreading is suggested as the major driving force for the deep subduction of continental crust in the Western Alps.Therefore,deep subduction of the continental crust bordering small oceanic basins would have been induced by the far-field stress of compression,whereas that bordering large oceanic basins was spontaneous due to the oceanic slab pull.This provides a new insight into the geodynamic me chanism of continental deep subduction.

An Experimental Study of Partial Melting of Metafelsic Rocks:Constraints on the Feature of Anatectic Melts and the Origin of Garnets in Collisional Orogens

Crustal anatexis in continental subduction zones has great bearing on chemical differentiation of the continental crust at convergent plate boundaries.This was experimentally investigated for ultrahigh-pressure(UHP)metafelsic rocks at 0.5-3.0 GPa and 650-900℃.The results show that partial melting begins at about 750℃ when pressure drops from 3.0 to 2.0 GPa,corresponding to decompressional exhumation of the deeply subducted continental crust.As the pressure further decreases to 1.0 GPa,the partial melting degree reaches the maximum of~25%at 900℃.Partial melts produced in these experiments are rich in silica and alkali,and poor in iron,manganese and magnesium.As the degree of partial melting increases,the composition of partial melts gradually converges toward homogeneous one.In the absence of free water,the partial melting of metafelsic rocks were triggered by the breakdown of hydrous minerals.At low temperatures of~750℃at 1.0-2.0 GPa,phengite dehydration melting occurs at first,giving rise to small amounts of felsic melts and peritectic K-feldspar.As the temperature rises up to 850-900℃,biotite begins to break down and gives rise to large amounts of felsic melts and peritectic minerals such as garnet,K-feldspar and orthopyroxene.It is noted that peritectic garnet is much different from anatectic garnet crystallized from anatectic melts and metamorphic garnet formed through metamorphic dehydration reaction under subsolidus conditions.The peritectic garnet is characterized not only by anhedral shapes with many multiphase crystal inclusions but also by compositions poor in spessartine and grossular but rich in almandine and pyrope.On the other hand,the anatectic garnets are characterized not only by euhedral shapes with few inclusions but also by compositions rich in grossular and spessartine but poor in almandine and pyrope.These observations provide experimental constraints on the origin of garnets in UHP metamorphic rocks,which have great bearing on understanding of anatectic metamorphism in collisional orogens.

Multiple Episodes of Zircon Growth during Anatectic Metamorphism of Metasedimentary Rocks in Collisional Orogens:Constraints from Felsic Granulites in the Bohemian Massif

Zircon is a key accessary mineral for metamorphic geochronology and geochemical tracing,but it has been a challenge to interpret its complex chemical zoning and age record acquired during multiple episodes of anatectic metamorphism in collisional orogens.This is illustrated by a combined study of petrography,phase equilibrium modeling and metamorphic P-T-t determination for granulites from the Bohemian Massif in the Variscan Orogen.These rocks record multiple episodes of zircon growth during anatectic metamorphism.They started from the compressional heating for prograde metamorphism to high-pressure(HP)to ultrahigh-pressure(UHP)eclogite facies with low degrees of partial melting.Afterwards,they underwent a decompressional stage from UHP eclogite facies to HP granulite facies for dehydration melting.These were followed by a further decompressional stage either to kyanite granulite facies or to sillimanite granulite facies at ultrahigh-temperature(UHT)conditions.Episodes of zircon growth are linked to specific metamorphic conditions for peritectic reactions on the basis of zoning patterns,trace element signatures,index mineral inclusions in dated domains and textural relationships to coexisting minerals.The results indicate that relict zircon domains are preserved even at UHT granulite facies conditions.A few zircon domains in the kyanite granulite grew during the prograde to peak UHP metamorphism,possibly corresponding to consumption of biotite and plagioclase but growth of garnet.During the decompressional exhumation to the HP granulite-facies,relict or prograde zircon domains were mostly dissolved into anatectic melts produced by muscovite breakdown.Most zircon grains grew during this transition to the HP granulite-facies in the kyanite granulite and are chemically related to continuous growth of garnet,whereas abundant zircon grains grew subsequently at the UHT granulite facies in the sillimanite granulite and are chemically related to garnet breakdown reactions.Another peak of zircon growth occurred at the fin

Crustal recycling at convergent plate boundaries is essential to mantle heterogeneity.However,crustal signatures in the mantle source of basaltic rocks above subduction zones were primarily incorporated in the form of liquid rather than solid phases.The physicochemical property of liquid phases is determined by the dehydration behavior of crustal rocks at the slab-mantle interface in subduction channels.Because of the significant fractionation in incompatible trace elements but the full inheritance in radiogenic isotopes relative to their crustal sources,the production of liquid phases is crucial to the geochemical transfer from the subducting crust into the mantle.In this process,the stability of specific minerals in subducting crustal rocks exerts a primary control on the enrichment of given trace elements in the liquid phases.For this reason,geochemically enriched oceanic basalts can be categorized into two types in terms of their trace element distribution patterns in the primitive mantle-normalized diagram.One is island arc basalts(IAB),showing enrichment in LILE,Pb and LREE but depletion in HFSE such as Nb and Ta relative to HREE,The other is ocean island basalts(OIB),exhibiting enrichment in LILE and LREE,enrichment or non-depletion in HFSE but depletion in Pb relative to HREE.In either types,these basalts show the enhanced enrichment of LILE and LREE with increasing their incompatibility relative to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts(MORB).The thermal regime of subduction zones can be categorized into two stages in both time and space,The first stage is characterized by compressional tectonism at low thermal gradients.As a consequence,metamorphic dehydration of the subducting crust prevails at forearc to subarc depths due to the breakdown of hydrous minerals such as mica and amphibole in the stability field of garnet and rutile,resulting in the liberation of aqueous solutions with the trace element composition that is considerably enriched in LILE,Pb and LREE but depleted in HFSE and HREE relative to normal M

Continental versus oceanic subduction zones

Subduction zones are tectonic expressions of convergent plate margins,where crustal rocks descend into and interact with the overlying mantle wedge.hey are the geodynamic system that produces maic arc volcanics above oceanic subduction zones but high-to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks in continental subduction zones.While the metamorphic rocks provide petrological records of orogenic processes when descending crustal rocks undergo dehydration and anataxis at forearc to subarc depths beneath the mantle wedge,the arc volcanics provide geochemical records of the mass transfer from the subducting slab to the mantle wedge in this period though the mantle wedge becomes partially melted at a later time.Whereas the mantle wedge overlying the subducting oceanic slab is of asthenospheric origin,that overlying the descending continental slab is of lithospheric origin,being ancient beneath cratons but juvenile beneath marginal arcs.In either case,the mantle wedge base is cooled down during the slab–wedge coupled subduction.Metamorphic dehydration is prominent during subduction of crustal rocks,giving rise to aqueous solutions that are enriched in luid-mobile incompatible elements.Once the subducting slab is decoupled from the mantle wedge,the slab–mantle interface is heated by lateral incursion of the asthenospheric mantle to allow dehydration melting of rocks in the descending slab surface and the metasomatized mantle wedge base,respectively.herefore,the tectonic regime of subduction zones changes in both time and space with respect to their structures,inputs,processes and products.Ophiolites record the tectonic conversion from sealoor spreading to oceanic subduction beneath continental margin,whereas ultrahigh-temperature metamorphic events mark the tectonic conversion from compression to extension in orogens.

Generation of andesite through partial melting of basaltic metasomatites in the mantle wedge:Insight from quantitative study of Andean andesites

Continental crust in average exhibits a similar composition in both major and trace elements to andesites along active continental margins.For this reason,andesitic magmatism above oceanic subduction zones is considered to have played a key role in the generation of continental crust along convergent plate boundaries.With respect to the origin of andesites themselves,however,there is still a hot debate on how they have acquired their geochemcial compositions.The debate is mainly centralized on the relative contributions of crustal contamination,magma differentiation and source mixing,which reaches an impasse in the past decades.The essential reason for this kind of debates is that these three mechanisms only can account for some of the geochemical observations for andesites,leading to insufficient discrimination among them.Nevertheless,the geochemical features of andesites are primarily controled from early to late by the composition of their source rocks in addition to partial melting and magma differentiation processes.If source mixing and partial melting processes in the early stage of andesite magmatism can account for the first-order geochemical features of andesites,there is no need to invoke the late processes of magma differentiation and crustal contamination for andesite petrogenesis.This is illustrated by quantitative forward modeling of the geochemical data for Quaternary andesites from the Andean arc in South America based on an integrated interpretation of these data.The modeling has run with four steps from early to late:(1)dehydration of the subducting oceanic crust at forearc depths;(2)partial melting of the subducting terrigenous sediment and altered oceanic basalt at subarc depths to produce hydrous felsic melts;(3)the generation of basaltic metasomatites(e.g.,Si-excess pyroxenite)in the mantle wedge through reaction of the mantle wedge peridotite with large amounts of the hydrous felsic melts;(4)the production of andesitic melts by partial melting of the basaltic metasomatites.The results not o

Distribution,cycling and impact of water in the Earth's interior

The Earth’s deep interior is a hidden water reservoir on a par with the hydrosphere that is crucial for keeping the Earth as a habitable planet. In particular, nominally anhydrous minerals(NAMs) in the silicate Earth host a significant amount of water by accommodating H point defects in their crystal lattices. Water distribution in the silicate Earth is highly heterogeneous, and the mantle transition zone may contain more water than the upper and lower mantles. Plate subduction transports surface water to various depths, with a series of hydrous minerals and NAMs serving as water carriers. Dehydration of the subducting slab produces liquid phases such as aqueous solutions and hydrous melts as a metasomatic agent of the mantle.Partial melting of the metasomatic mantle domains sparks off arc volcanism, which, along with the volcanism at mid-ocean ridges and hotspots, returns water to the surface and completes the deep water cycle. There appears to have been a steady balance between hydration and dehydration of the mantle at least since the Phanerozoic. Earth’s water probably originates from a primordial portion that survived the Moon-forming giant impact, with later delivery by asteroids and comets. Water could play a critical role in initiating plate tectonics. In the modern Earth, the storage and cycling of water profoundly modulates a variety of properties and processes of the Earth’s interior, with impacts on surface environments. Notable examples include the hydrolytic weakening effect on mantle convection and plate motion, influences on phase transitions(on the solidus of mantle peridotite in particular) and dehydration embrittlement triggering intermediate-to deep-focus earthquakes. Water can reduce seismic velocity and enhance electrical conductivity, providing remote sensing methods for water distribution in the Earth’s interior.Many unresolved issues around the deep water cycle require an integrated approach and concerted efforts from multiple disciplines.

A historical review of hybrid rice breeding

The development of germplasm resources and advances in breeding methods have led to steady increases in yield and quality of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Three milestones in the recent history of rice breeding have contributed to these increases: dwarf rice breeding, hybrid rice breeding, and super rice breeding. On the 50th anniversary of the success of three-line hybrid rice,we highlight important scientific discoveries in rice breeding that were made by Chinese scientists and summarize the broader history of the field. We discuss the strategies that could be used in the future to optimize rice breeding further in the hope that China will continue to play a leading role in international rice breeding.
