Hydroxyapatite composites with carbon allotropes:Preparation,properties,and applications

AIM:To evaluate the refractive and visual outcomes following cataract surgery and implantation of a trifocal toric intraocular lens(IOL)in eyes with low degrees of corneal ***:Twenty-six eyes of 22 patients who underwent implantation a trifocal toric IOL(FineVision PODFT,PhysIOL s.a.,Liege,Belgium)were *** with femtosecond laser,capsular tension ring insertion and intraoperative aberrometry were performed in all *** IOLs used showed a cylinder power of 1.00 *** outcome measures were refractive error and corrected-distance visual acuity(CDVA)and uncorrected-distance visual acuity(UDVA)*** were evaluated at 4 mo ***:Totally 50%of eyes showed a spherical equivalent(SE)within±0.13 D and all of them within±0.50 *** mean SE and refractive cylinder were-0.02±0.23 and-0.16±0.22 D,*** analysis revealed that 100%of eyes were within±0.50 D for the SE and cylindrical components(J0 and J45).Refractive changes were not correlated with keratometric changes(P>0.05)showing that the reduction in astigmatism comes from the trifocal toric *** 81%and 96%of eyes showed UDVA and CDVA of 20/20,*** postoperative mean values of monocular distance Snellen decimal UDVA and CDVA were 0.97±0.05 and 0.99±0.02(about 20/20),***:Our study suggests that the use of this trifocal toric IOL in patients with low amount of astigmatism provides accurate refractive outcomes and enables them to achieve excellent visual acuity.

CONSPECTUS:Over the past 30 years,the engineering of plasmonic resonances at the nanoscale has progressed dramatically,with important contributions in a variety of different fields,including chemistry,physics,biology,engineering,and ***,heavy optical losses related to the use of noble metals for the fabrication of plasmonic structures hindered their application in various ***,an answer to these long-lasting issues emerged in the use of lattice plasmon resonances(LPRs,also called surface lattice resonances),bringing new excitement in the field of ***,the organization of plasmonic nanoparticles into ordered arrays enables far-field coupling of the scattered light exploiting the diffraction modes of the array,generating plasmonic resonances with bandwidths as narrow as a few nanometers,corresponding to an increase of over 10-fold in the quality factors compared to localized plasmon *** such,LPRs offer new opportunities to harness light−matter interactions at the nanoscale,while generating renewed interest in the self-assembly of colloidal metal nanoparticles,as a scalable approach to the preparation of such plasmonic *** self-assembly emerged as one of the most versatile approaches,being compatible with soft-lithographic techniques such as nanoimprint lithography and amenable to a variety of materials,colloids,and *** self-assembly additionally allows the preparation of arrays where the repeating units are composed of multiple self-assembled nanoparticles(i.e.,plasmonic clusters).In this system,near-field coupling can be finely tuned,thereby showing promising results in biosensing,catalysis,or plasmonic *** this Account,we review the preparation of ordered arrays of clusters of plasmonic *** present various aspects involved in the templated self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles,with the aim of achieving at the same time close-packed structures within each cavity

There has been a recent explosion of interest from academics across a wide range of disciplines in the use of Multi-User Virtual Environments for education,driven by the success of platforms such as Internet Communication Technology learning skills in higher *** digital virtual worlds are used in the 21st century learning,advances in the capabilities and the spread of technology have fed a recent boom in interest in massively multi-user 3D virtual worlds for entertainment,and this in turn has led to a surge of interest in their educational *** these platforms are used more often as environments for teaching and learning,there is increased need to integrate them with other institutional systems,Web-based Virtual Learning Environments(VLE)in *** this paper,we briefly review the use of virtual worlds for education,from informal learning to formal instruction,and consider what is required to turn a virtual world from a Multi-User Virtual Environment into a fully fledged 3D Virtual Learning Environment(VLE).In this we focus on the development of Moodle—a system which integrates the popular 3D virtual world of Second Life with the open-source Virtual Learning Environment.

The last 15 years of research related to atmospheric corrosion and the release of copper to the environment are shortly summarized. Brown and green patinas with high barrier properties for corrosion are gradually evolved on copper at atmospheric conditions. The corrosion process and repeated dry and wet cycles results in a partial dissolution of corrosion products within the patina. Dissolved copper can be released and dispersed into the environment via the action of rainwater, however the major part is rearranged within the patina during drying cycles. The majority of corrosion products formed have a poor solubility, very different from water soluble copper salts. The release process is very slow and takes place independent of patina color. Its extent has only a marginal effect on the adherent patina. Released copper rapidly interacts with organic matter and in contact with different surfaces already in the close vicinity of the building, such as drainage systems, storm water pipes, pavements, stone materials and soil systems. These surfaces all have high capacities to retain copper in the runoff water and to reduce its concentration and chemical form to non-available and non-toxic levels for aquatic organisms.

Steel production causes a third of all industrial CO_(2) emissions due to the use of carbon-based substances as reductants for iron ores,making it a key driver of global ***,research efforts aim to replace these reductants with sustainably produced ***-based direct reduction(HyDR)is an attractive processing technology,given that direct reduction(DR)furnaces are routinely operated in the steel industry but with CH_(4) or CO as *** diffuses considerably faster through shaft-furnace pellet agglomerates than carbon-based ***,the net reduction kinetics in HyDR remains extremely sluggish for high-quantity steel production,and the hydrogen consumption exceeds the stoichiometrically required amount ***,the present study focused on the improved understanding of the influence of spatial gradients,morphology,and internal microstructures of ore pellets on reduction efficiency and metallization during *** this purpose,commercial DR pellets were investigated using synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy in conjunction with electron backscatter diffraction and chemical *** the interplay of different phases with internal interfaces,free surfaces,and associated nucleation and growth mechanisms provides a basis for developing tailored ore pellets that are highly suited for a fast and efficient HyDR.

Non-destructive microstructural analysis by electrical conductivity:Comparison with hardness measurements in different materials

The use of non-destructive evaluation(NDE) techniques for assessing microstructural changes in processed materials is of particular importance as it can be used to assess, qualitatively, the integrity of any material/structure. Among the several NDE techniques available, electrical conductivity measurements using eddy currents attract great attention owing to its simplicity and reliability. In this work, the electrical conductivity profiles of friction stir processed Ti6Al4 V, Cu, Pb, S355 steel and gas tungsten arc welded AISI 304 stainless steel were determined through eddy currents and four-point probe. In parallel, hardness measurements were also performed. The profiles matched well with the optical macrographs of the materials: while entering in the processed region a variation in both profiles was always observed. One particular advantage of electrical conductivity profiles over hardness was evident: it provides a better resolution of the microstructural alterations in the processed materials. Moreover, when thermomechanical processing induces microstructural changes that modify the magnetic properties of a material,eddy currents testing can be used to qualitatively determine the phase fraction in a given region of the material. A qualitative relation between electrical conductivity measurements and hardness is observed.

Investigating how crop domestication and early farming mediated crop attributes, distributions, and interactions with antagonists may shed light on today's agricultural pest problems. Crop domestication generally involved artificial selection for traits desirable to early farmers, for example, in creased productivity or yield, and enhanced qualities, though invariably it altered the interactions between crops and insects, and expanded the geographical ranges of crops. Thus, some studies suggest that with crop domestication and spread, insect populations on wild crop ancestors gave rise to pestiferous insect populations on crops. Here, we addressed whether the emergence of corn leafhopper (Dalbulus ma id is) as an agricultural pest may be associated with domestication and early spread of maize (Zea mays mays). We used AFLP markers and mitochondrial COI sequences to assess population genetic structuring and haplotype relationships among corn leafhopper samples from maize and its wild relative Zea diploperennis from multiple locations in Mexico and Argentina. We uncovered seven corn leafhopper haplotypes contained within two haplogroups, one haplogroup containing haplotypes associated with maize and the other containing haplotypes associated with Z. diploperennis in a mountainous habitat. Within the first haplogroup, one haplotype was predominant across Mexican locations, and another across Argentinean locations;both were considered pestiferous. We suggested that the divergence times of the maize-associated haplogroup and of the "pestiferous" haplotypes are correlated with the chronology of maize spread following its domestication. Overall, our results support a hypothesis positing that maize domestication favored corn leafhopper genotypes preadapted for exploiting maize so that they became pestiferous, and that with the geographical expansi on of maize farming, corn leafhopper colonized Z. diploperennis, a host exclusive to secluded habitats that serves as a refuge fo

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have gained great attention as promising photocatalysts for hydrogen ***,due to their poor stability in water,the use of aqueous hydrohalic acid solutions is specifically required for an efficient hydrogen ***,three novel photoactive lead-free hybrid perovskites based on bismuth and triazolium cations(denoted as IEF-15,IEF-16,and IEF-17(IEF stands for IMDEA energy frameworks))were synthesized and fully characterized(structural,compositional,optical,etc.).Further,these solids were proposed as photocatalysts for the challenging gas phase overall water splitting(OWS)***,IEF-16 thin films exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic activity in both H_(2) and O_(2) evolution,as a consequence of its appropriate bandgap and energy-band alignment,achieving hydrogen evolution rates ofμmol·g_(H_(2))^(-)1846 and 360 after 24 h under ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)irradiation or simulated solar irradiation,*** study additionally highlights the remarkable structural and photochemical stability of IEF-16 under different operational conditions(*** volume,irradiation and temperature),paving the way for green hydrogen production from OWS using perovskite-based photocatalysts.
