Comparative study of galectin-3 and B-type natriuretic peptide as biomarkers for the diagnosis of heart failure

Background Heart failure （HF） is a common disease with complex pathophysiological causes. The diagnosis of HF commonly relies on comprehensive analyses of medical history and symptoms, and results from echocardiography and biochemical tests. Galectin-3, a rela-tively new biomarker in HF, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2010 as a marker in the stratification of risk for HF. We assessed galectin-3 as a biomarker for HF diagnosis in patients with preserved ejection fraction （pEF） and compared its performance with that of B-type natriuretic peptide （BNP）. Methods Thirty-five pEF patients with HF （HFpEF group） and 43 pEF patients without HF （control group） were enrolled. Plasma levels of galectin-3 and BNP in HFpEF and control subjects were determined. Sensitivity, specificity, pre dictive values, and accuracy of galectin-3 and BNP as markers for HF diagnosis were calculated and compared. Results Levels of galec- tin-3 and BNP were 23.09 ±6.97 ng/mL and 270.46 ± 330.41 pg/mL in the HFpEF group, and 16.74 ± 2.75 ng/mL and 59.94 ± 29.93 pg/mL in the control group, respectively. Differences in levels of galectin-3 and BNP between the two groups were significant （P 〈 0.01）. As a bio- marker for HF diagnosis in study subjects, galectin-3 showed sensitivity and specificity of 94.3% and 65.1%, respectively, at a cutoff value of 17.8 ug/mL. BNP showed sensitivity and specificity of 77.1% and 90.7%, respectively, at a cutoff value of 100 pg/mL. Galectin-3 was a significantly more sensitive （P 〈 0.05） but less specific （P 〈 0.01） biomarker compared with BNP. Differences in positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy between galectin-3 and BNP markers were not significant （P 〉 0.05）. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve （95% confidence interval） were 0.891 （0.808-0.974） and 0.896 （0.809-0.984） for galectin-3 and BNP, respec- tively, with no significant difference between the two values （P 〉 0.05）. Single phases of ammonium penta and tetra molybdates were prepared. The massic heat capacities at normal pre ssure below their decomposition temperatures were measured by drop method. The relationships of the massic heat capacities of ammonium molybdates with those of the decomposition products were also discussed. The results show that the massic heat capacities of ammonium molybdates can be estimated by adding together contributions from their decomposition products, and the less change of chemical bonds, the more accurate of the estimation.

Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia. Studies have shown that lycopene can significantly inhibit oxidative stress;therefore, we hypothesized that lycopene can reduce the level of oxidative stress in vascular dementia. A vascular dementia model was established by permanent bilateral ligation of common carotid arteries. The dosage groups were treated with lycopene(50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) every other day for 2 months. Rats without bilateral carotid artery ligation were prepared as a sham group. To test the ability of learning and memory, the Morris water maze was used to detect the average escape latency and the change of search strategy. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to observe changes of hippocampal neurons. The levels of oxidative stress factors, superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde, were measured in the hippocampus by biochemical detection. The levels of reactive oxygen species in the hippocampus were observed by dihydroethidium staining. The distribution and expression of oxidative stress related protein, neuron-restrictive silencer factor, in hippocampal neurons were detected by immunofluorescence histochemistry and western blot assays. After 2 months of drug administration,(1) in the model group, the average escape latency was longer than that of the sham group, and the proportion of straight and tend tactics was lower than that of the sham group, and the hippocampal neurons were irregularly arranged and the cytoplasm was hyperchromatic.(2) The levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde in the hippocampus of the model group rats were increased, and the activity of superoxide dismutase was decreased.(3) Lycopene(50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) intervention improved the above changes, and the lycopene 100 mg/kg group showed the most significant improvement effect.(4) Neuron-restrictive silencer factor expression in the hippocampus was lower in the sham group and the lycopene 100 mg/kg group than in the model group.(5) Th

A new process of separating sulfur with different valance from polysulfide mixtures was developed. Sulfide, sulfite and sulfur were separated by adding acetic acid in one step. The polysulfide mixture, sulfite solution and sulfur were oxidized to sulfate by hydrogen peroxide. The products were measured by X ray Fluorescence Spectrometer(XRF) using filter method preparative specimen. The measurement needs only one set of standard *** effects of temperature and pH values on the separation were discussed. The results show that the recoveries range from 98.0% to 101.3% of sulfidic sulfur S( II), 97.0% to 103.0% for sulfite S(IV) and 98.4% to 100.4% for polysulfidic sulfur S(0).

AIM:To compare the efficacy of vitrectomy combined with air or silicone oil in the treatment of idiopathic macular hole(IMH).METHODS:According to the results of high-definition optical coherence tomography(HD-OCT),75 cases(75 eyes)of IMH in stage II-IV(Gass stage)in the General Hospital of Chinese PLA from January 2017 to December 2019 were collected for this retrospective *** best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and minimum diameter of IMH(MMHD)were *** underwent vitrectomy combined with internal limiting membrane peeling operation,and were divided into disinfection air group(30 eyes)and silicone oil group(45 eyes)according to the intraocular *** MMHD≤400μm(MMHD1),there were 23 eyes in air group and 16 eyes in silicone oil *** MMHD2>400μm(MMHD2),there were 7 eyes in air group and 29 eyes in silicone oil *** month after surgery,the closure rates of IMH and BCVA were compared and *** to HD-OCT,the closure shape was graded with A(bridge closure)and B(good closure).RESULTS:The closure rates of air group and silicone oil group were 86.67%and 95.56%respectively with no significant difference(P>0.05);For MMHD1,those of air group and silicone oil group were 95.65%and 100%respectively with no significant difference(P>0.05);For MMHD2,those of air group and silicone oil group were 57.14%and 93.10%respectively,and those of the silicone oil group were higher than the air group(P0.05).The proportion of Grade B in MMHD2 silicone oil group was higher than that in the air group(P0.05).CONCLUSION:
