Predictors for partial suppression of spermatogenesis of hormonal male contraception

Aim： To analyze factors influencing the efficacy of hormonal suppression of spermatogenesis for male contraception. Methods： A nested case-control study was conducted, involving 43 subjects, who did not achieve azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia when given monthly injections of 500 mg testosterone undecanoate （TU）, defined as partial suppressors compared with 855 subjects who had suppressed spermatogenesis （complete suppressors）. Sperm density, serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone （LH） and follicle stimulating hormone （FSH） concentrations at the baseline and the suppression phase were compared between partial and complete suppressors. Polymorphisms of androgen receptor （AR） and three single nucleotide variants and their haplotypes of FSH receptor （FSHR） genes determined by polymerase chain reaction （PCR） and DNA sequencing technique were compared between 29 partial and 34 complete suppressors. Results： Baseline serum LH level was higher and serum LH as well as FSH level during the suppression phase was less suppressed in partial suppressors. Additionally, in a logistic regression analysis larger testis volume, higher serum FSH concentrations alone, or interaction of serum LH, FSH, testosterone and sperm concentrations were associated with degree of suppression. The distribution of polymorphisms of AR or FSH receptor genes did not differ between partial and complete suppressors. In cases with incomplete FSH suppression （FSH 〉 0.2 IU/L）, the chances of reaching azoospermia were 1.5 times higher in the subjects with more than 22 CAG triplet repeats. Conclusion： Partial suppression of spermatogenesis induced by 500 mg TU monthly injections is weakly influenced by hormonal and clinical features but not polymorphism in AR and FSHR genes.

MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are mediators of the aging *** purpose of this work was to analyze the miRNA expression profiles of spermatozoa from men of different ages with normal ***-seven donors were divided into three groups by age(Group A,n=8,age:20–30 years;Group B,n=10,age:31–40 years;and Group C,n=9,age:41–55 years)for high-throughput sequencing *** from 65 individuals(22,22,and 21 in Groups A,B,and C,respectively)were used for validation by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR).A total of 2160 miRNAs were detected:1223 were known,937 were newly discovered and unnamed,of which 191 were expressed in all donors.A total of 7,5,and 17 differentially expressed microRNAs(DEMs)were found in Group A vs B,Group B vs C,and Group A vs C comparisons,***-two miRNAs were statistically correlated with *** miRNAs were identified as age-associated miRNAs,including hsa-miR-127-3p,mmu-miR-5100_L+2R-1,efu-miR-9226_L-2_1ss22GA,cgr-miR-1260_L+1,hsa-miR-652-3p_R+1,pal-miR-9993a-3p_L+2R-1,hsa-miR-7977_1ss6AG,hsa-miR-106b-3p_R-1,hsa-miR-186-5p,PC-3p-59611_111,hsa-miR-93-3p_R+1,and aeca-mir-8986ap5_*** were 9165 target genes of age-associated *** Ontology(GO)analysis of the target genes identified revealed enrichment of protein binding,membrane,cell cycle,and so *** Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)enrichment analysis of age-related miRNAs for target genes revealed 139 enriched pathways,such as signaling pathways regulating stem cell pluripotency,metabolic pathways,and the Hippo signaling *** suggests that miRNAs play a key role in male fertility changes with increasing age and provides new evidence for the study of the mechanism of age-related male fertility decline.

We are very glad to see that the Asian Journal of Andrology published a Special Issue on Semen Analysis in 21st Century Medicine, which well revealed some behind-the-scene controversies of the 5th edition of the WHO laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen [1]. Three articles from the special issue, two on the reference values of semen parameters [2, 3] and another presenting the investigation results of 118 laboratories performing semen analysis in China's Mainland [4], are very thoughtprovoking and we would like to share some of our views on these topics.

To avoid the secondary frequency dip caused by the steep drop of the electrical power of wind turbines(WTs)at the end of frequency support stage,the torque limit-based iner-tial control(TLIC)method sets the power reference as a linear function of rotor speed,rather than the step form for the step-wise inertial ***,the compensation effect on the frequency nadir(FN)caused by the load surge is weakened as the TLIC power is no longer in the step ***,the maximum point of the frequency response component(FRC)contributed by TLIC occurs earlier than the minimum point of FRC corresponding to the load surge,so that the FN cannot be adequately ***,this paper first investigates the relation between the peak and nadir times of FRCs stimulated by the TLIC and load *** this basis,with the compensation principle of matching the peak and nadir times of FRCs,the improved TLIC method based on delayed support is ***,the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated via the experiments on the test bench of wind-integrated power system.

Existing specific emitter identification(SEI)methods based on hand-crafted features have drawbacks of losing feature information and involving multiple processing stages,which reduce the identification accuracy of emitters and complicate the procedures of *** this paper,we propose a deep SEI approach via multidimensional feature extraction for radio frequency fingerprints(RFFs),namely,***,we extract multidimensional physical RFFs from the received signal by virtue of variational mode decomposition(VMD)and Hilbert transform(HT).The physical RFFs and I-Q data are formed into the balanced-RFFs,which are then used to train *** introducing model-aided RFFs into neural network,the hybrid-driven scheme including physical features and I-Q data is *** improves physical interpretability of ***,since RFFsNet-SEI identifies individual of emitters from received raw data in end-to-end,it accelerates SEI implementation and simplifies procedures of ***,as the temporal features and spectral features of the received signal are both extracted by RFFsNet-SEI,identification accuracy is ***,we compare RFFsNet-SEI with the counterparts in terms of identification accuracy,computational complexity,and prediction *** results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms the counterparts on the basis of simulation dataset and real dataset collected in the anechoic chamber.

The choice of a type of combustion technology to be used for heat or power generation depends on economic,technical,operational and fuel availability *** benefits associated with the evolving market driven by the fluidised bed combustion(FBC)technology cannot be overlooked especially when gauged at 65 GWth of worldwide installed capacity alongside added benefits of handling fuel variation,low pollutant emissions and high combustion *** or biomass waste will continue to have a vital role to play in the future FBC technology-based power *** often contains high levels of inorganic species that can form sticky agglomerates posing a significant risk to boiler operation resulting in unscheduled *** added complexity of the behaviour of the fuel and bed material mix highlights the requirement for simulation models to identify agglomeration to help improve the overall performance and reliability of FBC *** resolve this problem,this research devised a simulation strategy for the detection of agglomeration using the Eulerian–Eulerian *** developed modelling strategy is validated with the experimental data available in literature for two-dimensional simplified geometry of a pilot-scale fluidised bed *** model results were found promising and robust to predict bed defluidisation times and other parameters consistent with the experimental data.
