Cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis: Radiologic features and clinical behavior

To investigate the characteristic radiologic findings of cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) which can be differentiated from other similar bowel disease and to assess their clinical behavior. METHODSTwenty pathologically and clinically confirmed CMUSE patients (males:females = 8:12; mean age: 40.4 years) between March 2002 and August 2015 from seven academic centers in South Korea were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated small bowel series (SBS; n = 25), computed tomography (CT) enterography (n = 21), magnetic resonance (MR) enterography (n = 2), and abdominopelvic CT (n = 18) images, focusing on enteric and perienteric manifestations. Any change in radiologic features during follow-up period was recorded. We evaluated clinical data including presenting symptoms, laboratory finding and presence of relapse from electronic medical records. Histopathologic findings were also evaluated. RESULTSThe main symptoms were abdominal pain (n = 12) and anemia (n = 10). All patients showed small bowel strictures (n = 52, mean: 2.6 per patient) on initial CT/MR, located in the ileum (n = 47) or jejunum (n = 5). Strictures showed short-length (mean: 10.44 mm) and circumferential bowel wall thickening (mean: 5.56 mm) with layered enhancement (n = 48) that were also noted on initial SBS (n = 36) with shallow ulcers (n = 10). Some ulcerative lesions or wall thickening progressed into strictures on follow-up SBS/CT, and some strictures revealed recurrent ulceration on follow-up SBS. There were no penetrating disease features like fistula or abscess and no gastrointestinal tract involvement except the small bowel. Nine patients experienced disease recurrence (median relapse-free period: 32 mo) even post-operatively. Histopathologic features of surgically resected specimens were characterized as multiple superficial ulcerations confined to mucosa or submucosa and multiple strictures. Profitability Prediction Model for NPD Projects Under RisK

Only a few successful new product development （NPD） projects are continuously supported by the firm when they are expected to assure profitability in the market. The profitability of a project is measured as profit ratio （PR）, the profit is divided by the cost. The profit figure is changed depending on either internal risks or uncertainties occurring externally. More risks require higher response costs to them and uncontrollable uncertainties affect NPD projects either positively or negatively. In this study, a PR model is developed to predict the profitability of a project at a given time. The model minimizes the response cost computed under two extreme response strategies, such as ＂Avoid＂ and ＂Acceptance＂ for the internal threats. Also, the model reflects the sales volume changes due to external uncertainties. The linear programming （LP） method determines the optimal probability of the response strategy under three scenarios of defining the relationship between risk avoidance and risk acceptance. It can be utilized to make a GO/NOGO decision on the project based on the prediction results at any gate of the NPD process. The solving procedure is provided to apply the developed model for real cases.

Krill oil (KO) exhibits various biological activities， such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. However， the inhibitory effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in vitro and in vivo have not yet been studied. This study investigated the anti-BPH effects of KO extracted by an enzymatic hydrolysis method. KO treatment inhibited the proliferation of WMPY-1 and BPH-1 cells by induction of G0/G1phase arrest through the modulation of positive and negative regulators in both prostate cell types. KO treatment stimulated phosphorylation of JNK and p38 signaling. In addition， KO changed the expression of BPH-related markers (5α-reductase， androgen receptor， FGF， Bcl-2， and Bax) and the activity of the proliferation-mediated NF-κB binding motif. KO-induced levels of proliferation-mediated molecules of prostate cells were attenuated in the presence of siRNA-specific p-38 (si-p38) and JNK (si-JNK). Furthermore， the administration of KO alleviated prostate size and weight and the cell layer thickness of prostate glands in a testosterone enanthate-induced BPH rat model. KO treatment altered the level of dihydrotestosterone in serum and the expression levels of BPH-related markers in prostate tissues. Finally， KO-mediated inhibition of prostatic growth was validated by histological analysis. These results suggest that KO has an inhibitory effect on BPH in prostate cells in vitro and in vivo. Thus， KO might be a potential prophylactic or therapeutic agent for patients with BPH.

Monofilament type of polyaromatic amide(PA)and carbon nanotube(CNT)composite fibers is presented.A concept of a lyotropic liquid crystal(LLC)constructed via a spontaneous self-assembly is introduced to mitigate the extremely low com-patibility between PA and *** approaches provide an effective co-processing route of PA and CNT simultaneously to fabricate the uniform,continuous,and reliable composite fibers through a ***,the addition of a small amount PA into the dope solution of CNT governs the LLC mesophase not only in a spinneret stage but also in a coagulant ***,the developed PA/CNT composite fibers have the high uniaxial orientational order and the close interfacial packing compared to the pure CNT *** PA/CNT composite fibers achieve the outstanding tensile strength,electrical conductivity,and electrochemical response,while maintaining a *** also exhibit the chemical,mechanical,and thermal *** of these advantages can make flexible,sewable,and washable PA/CNT composite fibers ideal nanocomposite materials for use in next-generation information and energy transporting system by replacing conventional metal electrical conductors.

Changes of tear film lipid layer thickness by 3% diquafosol ophthalmic solutions in patients with dry eye syndrome

AIM: To evaluate the quantitatively changes in lipid layer thickness(LLT) when 3% diquafosol eye drop is used for dry eye patients using the tear film interferometer. METHODS: A total 124 participants(32 males, 92 females;mean age, 28.9 y) diagnosed with dry eye disease(DED) received topical instillation of 4 ophthalmic solutions in one eye: diquafosol, normal saline, 0.1% sodium hyaluronate and 0.3% gatifloxacin, in a masked manner. LLT was measured using an interferometer at baseline and 20 min after the instillation of each ophthalmic ***: Changes of LLT after instillation(nm, mean± standard error) were as follows: 12.6±2.0 for diquafosol(P<0.001), 1.2±2.2 for normal saline(P=0.301), 1.5±2.0 for hyaluronate(P=0.495), and 0.5±3.2 for gatifloxacin(P=0.884).CONCLUSION: Topical instillation of diquafosol increases tear film LLT in DED patients. Diquafosol 3% eye drop might be effective treatment option of evaporative DED with meibomian gland dysfunction.

AIM:To evaluate clinical outcomes following implantation of an extended range of vision intraocular lens(IOL),the ZXR00,and a diffractive multifocal IOL with+2.75 diopters(D)add power,the ***:Totally 30 patients who underwent either bilateral implantation of the ZXR00 IOL with intended emmetropia(ZXR00 emmetropia group:20 eyes)and intended micromonovision(ZXR00 monovision group:20 eyes),or bilateral implantation of the ZKB00 IOL with intended emmetropia(ZKB00 group:20 eyes)were included in this *** acuity at 4 m,80,and 40 cm;and the types of halos(misty,fine,and rainbow)were analyzed at one and three months after ***:There were no significant differences in distance visual acuity among the three *** mean uncorrected intermediate visual acuity was better in the ZXR00 emmetropia and monovision groups(0.02 logMAR and 0.02 logMAR,respectively)than in the ZKB00 group(0.14 logMAR).The mean uncorrected near visual acuity was worse in the ZXR00 emmetropia group(0.26 logMAR)than in the ZXR00 monovision and ZKB00 groups(0.12 logMAR and 0.10 logMAR,respectively).There was an increased incidence of rainbow halos in the ZKB00 group vs in either ZXR00 group(P=0.033).CONCLUSION:Implantation of the ZXR00 IOL with intended micromonovision provide superior visual acuity than implantation of the ZXR00 IOL with intended *** ZXR00 IOLs tend to show a lower incidence of rainbow halos than did the ZKB00 IOL.

Calbindin D-28K （CB）, a Ca2＋-binding protein, maintains Ca2＋ homeostasis and protects neurons against various insults. Hyperthermia can exacerbate brain damage produced by ischemic insults. However, little is reported about the role of CB in the brain under hyperthermic condition during ischemic insults. We inves- tigated the effects of transient global cerebral ischemia on CB immunoreactivity as well as neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation under hyperthermic condition using immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclei （NeuN） and CB, and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining in gerbils. Hyperthermia （39.5 ＋ 0.2~C） was induced for 30 minutes before and during transient ischemia. Hyperthermic ischemia resulted in neu- ronal damage/death in the pyramidal layer of CA1-3 area and in the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In addition, hyperthermic ischemia significantly decreaced CB immunoreac- tivity in damaged or dying neurons at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In brief, hyperthermic condition produced more extensive and severer neuronal damage/death, and reduced CB immunoreactivity in the hippocampus following transient global cerebral ischemia. Present findings indicate that the degree of reduced CB immu- noreactivity might be related with various neuronal damage/death overtime and corresponding areas after ischemic insults.
