The new particle around 125 GeV observed at the LHC is almost consistent with the standard model Higgs boson, except that the diphoton decay mode may be excessive. We summarize a number of possibilities. We propose to use the vector-boson fusion to test the underlying model for electroweak symmetry breaking. Using the well known dijet-tagging technique to single out the vector-boson fusion mechanism, we investigate potential of vector-boson fusion to discriminate a number of models suggested to give an enhanced inclusive diphoton production rate.

The ultrafast laser based hybrid machining system was studied and a novel approach was demonstrated to improve laser machining quality on metals by vibrating the optical objective lens with a low frequency (500 Hz) and various displacements (0-16.5 μm) during a femtosecond laser machining *** laser used in this experiment is an amplified Ti:sapphire femtosecond (10-15 s) laser system that generates 100 femtosecond pulses having an energy of 3.5 mJ/pulse with a 5 kHz repetition rate at a central wavelength of 790 *** is found that both the wall surface finish of the machined structures and the aspect ratio obtained using the frequency vibration assisted laser machining are improved compared with those derived via laser machining without vibration assistance.

Applications of a novel curve-fitting technique are presented to efficiently predict the motion of the vortex filament, which is trailed from a rigid body such as wings and rotors. The gov- erning equations of the motion, when a Lagrangian approach with the present curve-fitting method is applied, can be transformed into an easily solvable form of the system of nonlinear ordinary dif- ferential equations. The applicability of Bezier curves, B-spline, and Lagrange interpolating polyno- mials is investigated. Local Lagrange interpolating polynomials with a shift operator are proposed as the best selection for applications, since it provides superior system characteristics with minimum computing time, compared to other methods. In addition, the Gauss quadrature formula with local refinement strategy has been developed for an accurate prediction of the induced velocity computed with the line integration of the Biot-Savart law. Rotary-wing problems including a vortex ring problem are analyzed to show the efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility in the applications of the pro- posed method.

The best active twist schedules exploiting various waveform types are sought taking advantage of the global search algorithm for the reduction of hub vibration and/or power required of a rotor in high-speed conditions. The active twist schedules include two non-harmonic inputs formed based on segmented step functions as well as the simple harmonic waveform input. An advanced Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm（PSGA） is employed for the optimizer. A rotorcraft Computational Structural Dynamics（CSD） code CAMRAD II is used to perform the rotor aeromechanics analysis. A Computation Fluid Dynamics（CFD） code is coupled with CSD for verification and some physical insights. The PSGA optimization results are verified against the parameter sweep study performed using the harmonic actuation. The optimum twist schedules according to the performance and/or vibration reduction strategy are obtained and their optimization gains are compared between the actuation cases. A two-phase non-harmonic actuation schedule demonstrates the best outcome in decreasing the power required while a four-phase non-harmonic schedule results in the best vibration reduction as well as the simultaneous reductions in the power required and vibration. The mechanism of reduction to the performance gains is identified illustrating the section airloads, angle-of-attack distribution, and elastic twist deformation predicted by the present approaches.

Viscoelastic（VE） dampers, with their stiffness and energy dissipation capabilities, have been widely used in civil engineering for mitigating wind-induced vibration and seismic responses of structures, thus enhancing the comfort of residents and serviceability of equipment inside. In past relevant research, most analytical models for characterizing the mechanical behavior of VE dampers were verified by comparing their predictions with performance test results from small-scale specimens, which might not adequately or conservatively represent the actual behavior of full-scale dampers, especially with regard to the ambient temperature, temperature rise, and heat convection effects. Thus, in this study, by using a high-performance testing facility with a temperature control system, full-scale VE dampers were dynamically tested with different displacement amplitudes, excitation frequencies, and ambient temperatures. By comparing the analytical predictions with the experimental results, it is demonstrated that adopting the fractional derivative method together with considering the effects of excitation frequencies, ambient temperatures, temperature rises, softening, and hardening, can reproduce the design performance of full-scale VE dampers very well.

Microwave-induced nitrogen-doped titanate nanotubes（NTNTs） were characterized by transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）, Zeta potential analysis,specific surface area（SBET）, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. TEM results indicate that NTNTs retain a tubular structure with a crystalline multiwall and have a length of several hundred nanometers after nitrogen doping. XRD findings demonstrate that the crystalline structure of NTNTs was dominated by anatase, which is favored for photocatalytic application. The Ti-O-N linkage observed in the XPS N 1s spectrum is mainly responsible for narrowing the band gap and eventually enhancing the visible light photoactivity. FT-IR results demonstrated the existence of H3O＋, which could be excited by photo-generated holes to form hydroxyl radicals and degrade environmental pollutants. After sintering at 350°C, the UV-Vis absorbance edges of NTNTs significantly shift to the visible-light region, which indicates N atom doping into the nanotubes. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B（RhB） via NTNTs show good efficiency, with pseudo first-order kinetic model rate constants of 3.7 × 10-3, 2.4 × 10-3and 8.0 × 10-4sec-1at pH 3, 7, and 11, respectively.

Background The change of anaerobic exercise abilities during and after a high-altitude expedition or hypoxic exposure is not well studied. To evaluate the effects of an extreme-altitude expedition on anaerobic performance, the lO-second supramaximal test and endocrine hormones were evaluated before and after an expedition to Peak Lenin. Methods Four subjects （3 male and 1 female, age （30.5＋16.5） years） were recruited into the study. Three sets of tests were performed, including a basic test at sea level and 20 days before first arrival at the base camp （3600 m）, a middle test done at day after returning from the summit to the base camp and the post test at the lOth day after return to the sea level. Both the supramaximal test, performed by a cycle ergometer, and body composition, performed by bioelectrical impedance analysis, were completed before the basic test and post test. The endocrine hormones including cortisol, growth hormone, testosterone, noradrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine, glucagon and β-endorphin were measured at all tests. Results Comparing the conditions before and after the expedition, the body measurement parameters were decreased alter the expedition, i.e., body weight （-4.22%, P〈O.05）, fat-free mass （-2.09%, P〈O.01） and body fat （-8.95%, P=0.172）. The peak power relative/body weight ratio （PP/BW） was similar （（9.70±1.97） vs （9.11±1.80） W/kg, P=-0.093）, while mean power/body weight ratio （MP/BW） was reduced significantly after the expedition （（9.14±1.77） vs （8.33±1.74） W/kg, P 〈0.05）. Peak power/fat-free mass （PP/FFM）, mean power/fat-free mass （MP/FFM） and fatigue index （FI） were significantly lower after the expedition （PP/FFM：（11.95±1.71） vs （10.99±1.59） W/kg, P 〈0.05; MP/FFM：（11.26±1.50） vs （10.04±1.55） W/kg, P〈O.O05; FI （85.55±4.17）% vs （77.25±4.40）%, P〈O.05）.
