A survey and evaluation was carried out on a potential granitoid quarry site in the locality of Linguésso (North West of Ivory Coast) with the aim of identifying and estimating the quantity of exploitable granite based on the electrical resistivity methods. The combination of electrical trailing, sounding and tomography techniques allowed the determination of the characteristics of the rock deposit, namely the electrical signature (between 19,259 Ωm and 86,316 Ωm), the extension (N90°), the rooting (between 0 and 45 m) and the fracturing (between N14° and N160°) of the granitic formation sought. The modeling resulted in an estimated mineable rock volume of 2,936,250 m3 providing a production quantity of 7,927,875 tonnes.

This study assesses the projected changes in the climate zoning of Côte d’Ivoire using the hierarchical classification of principal components (HCPC) method applied to the daily precipitation data of an ensemble of 14 CORDEX-AFRICA simulations under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The results indicate the existence of three climate zones in Côte d’Ivoire (the coastal, the centre and the north) over the historical period (1981-2005). Moreover, CORDEX simulations project an extension of the surface area of drier climatic zones while a reduction of wetter zones, associated with the appearance of an intermediate climate zone with surface area varying from 77,560 km2 to 134,960 km2 depending on the period and the scenario. These results highlight the potential impacts of climate change on the delimitation of the climate zones of Côte d’Ivoire under the greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Thus, there is a reduction in the surface areas suitable for the production of cash crops such as cocoa and coffee. This could hinder the country’s economy and development, mainly based on these cash crops.

Treatment and Sequelae of Panfacial Fractures in the Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology Department of the Hospital University of Treichville-Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire)

Introduction: The treatment of panfacial fractures is complex and constitutes a challenge for the maxillofacial surgeon, who, despite therapeutic progress, frequently suffers functional and aesthetic sequelae. This study aimed to describe the treatment and evaluate the functional and aesthetic sequelae of panfacial fractures in the stomatology and maxillofacial surgery department of the Treichville University Hospital. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study over a 6 years in the stomatology and maxillofacial surgery department of Treichville University Hospital. Forty-two patients with panfacial fractures were included in the study. Results: Forty-two patients were registered. The average time to osteosynthesis was 12.4 days. Nasotracheal intubation was used most often (88%), and in the majority of cases, mixed osteosynthesis combining a screwed plate and steel wire was performed (64.29%). The “Bottom-up and Outside-in” surgical sequence was the most commonly used (64.29%). All patients had at least one functional and/or cosmetic sequela after treatment. Functional sequelae were dominated by occlusal problems and aesthetic sequelae by nasal deformities. Discussion: Panfacial fractures are characterised by their complexity, presenting maxillo-facial surgeons with a therapeutic and evolutionary challenge. The quality of the initial, often multidisciplinary, management of panfacial fractures is an essential factor in both functional and aesthetic prognosis. Conclusion: The treatment of panfacial fractures, even if well managed, is sometimes a source of sequelae, requiring often complex secondary management.

Understanding the Local Carbon Fluxes Variations and Their Relationship to Climate Conditions in a Sub-Humid Savannah-Ecosystem during 2008-2015: Case of Lamto in Cote d’Ivoire

The temporal variations of the Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), the Total Ecosystem Respiration (TER) and the Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), and their responses to meteorological conditions (e.g. temperature, radiative flux and precipitation) at Lamto, in wet savannah region across C?te d’Ivoire are analyzed using GFED-CASA and daily meteorological data recorded over the 2008-2015 period. The study shows the links between these carbon fluxes and climate variability at Lamto that is subject to high anthropogenic pressures and seasonal bushfires. The correlative statistics from multiple regression methods were used to assess the different relationships and show how they change in time. The results show important seasonal variability in the Gross Primary Productivity and the Total Ecosystem Respiration mainly associated with the changes in temperature and radiative flux. In addition, the statistical analysis suggests a high correlation between meteorological conditions and the GPP and TER. These climatic conditions may explain 83% and 79% of the variances of GPP and TER respectively. Moreover, the interannual variability of the Net Ecosystem Exchange indicates that around Lamto, in the subhumid savannah, the ecosystem behaves as a carbon sink similar to other West African ecosystems. On the other hand, there is no clear link between the NEE and temperature, radiative flux and precipitation. This lack of connection may suggest a limited response of the NEE interannual dynamics related to the changes in climatic features.

Introduction: Complex post-traumatic facial disfigurements are caused by civilian or ballistic trauma. Their repercussions are functional, aesthetic and psychological. The initial emergency or secondary management of facial damage is difficult. The objective is to report, through the clinical observation of three patients, the results of the management of complex facial dislocations in a context of limited technical resources. Patients and methods: Three complex post-traumatic facial dislocations were managed between May 2006 and June 2017. Results: Primary treatment and secondary repair were established on a case-by-case basis. Local autoplasty was the indication of choice. Multidisciplinary management resulted in satisfactory functional and cosmetic outcomes. Two of the patients were lost to follow-up before the end of treatment. Discussion: The complete management of facial dislocations remains difficult and complex, in an extreme exercise situation. In an emergency, the priority is to save the life of the injured person. Several factors are involved in the therapeutic decision: the choice of the maxillofacial reconstruction technique, the availability of the technical platform, the financial capacity and the psychological state of the patient and his entourage. Sequential and multidisciplinary treatment gives satisfactory results in terms of morphology, function and aesthetics, despite the limited technical resources available. Psychological support is an essential complement for successful socio-professional and family reintegration.

Introduction: Cleft lip, palate and alveolar (CLPA) are congenital malformations of the face due to a defect in the fusion of embryonic buds during the first weeks of embryogenesis. These malformations affect the upper lip, the alveolar bone and the palate. The incidence in Africa ranges from 1/2000 to 1/500 births. Their multidisciplinary management is long and costly. Thus, the help provided by humanitarian organisations during free care campaigns is welcome. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study conducted from August 2014 to July 2016 in the Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology Department of the Treichville University Hospital in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The objective was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of CLPA during a humanitarian campaign for free care. Results: 51 cases of CLPA were operated on. Males were involved in 54.9% of the cases, i.e. a sex ratio of 1.2. The average age of the patients at the time of the operation was 3.44 years with extremes of 3 months and 52 years. Patients with low socioeconomic status represented 84.3% of the cases. Cleft lips (31.4%) and cleft palates (33.33%) predominated. For cleft lips, unilateral forms were the most frequent (73.5%) and the left side was most often affected (59.2%). The most common surgical techniques used were MILLARD cheiloplasty for cleft lips (79.36%) and Dorrance pushback for cleft palates (78.05%). The postoperative course was simple in the majority of cases (80.47%). Patients and/or parents were satisfied with the postoperative results in over 90% of cases. Discussion: Cleft lip and palate are common. Their management by humanitarian missions through mass campaigns allows us to receive a large number of patients affected by this pathology who are treated with a high satisfaction rate. Etiologies of the Hearing Loss and Their Impacts at the Patients Worn Hearing Aid in the International Center of Hearing Correction in Abidjan (ICHC)

Objective: Determine the etiologies and their impacts of hearing loss at the patients’ worn hearing aid in the international center of hearing correction in Abidjan (ICHC). Material and Method: The study is of transverse and analytical type realized in the ICHC from July 1999 to June 2010. It concerned the files of patients’ worn hearing aid in the center. The patients worn initially in another center but followed in the ICHC were excluded. Data were collected from medical files of patients and concerned etiologies, age, type, degree of hearing loss as well as the prosthetic gains and the satisfaction. Results: Fifteen etiologies were listed with in first three rows the meningitis (17.9%) the presbyacusis (17.5%) and chronic otitis media (12.1%). The degrees of hearing loss in the seven etiologies most frequent were severe and profound in 87.6% of cases to the right and 82.8% to the left. The prosthetic pure tonal gain was significant in case of sound trauma and sudden hearing loss. The prosthetic speech reception threshold gain was only significant in case of presbyacusis and sudden hearing loss. The satisfaction of hearing aids was significant in case of presbyacusis, sudden hearing loss and the sound trauma. Conclusion: The main clauses etiologies were the meningitis and the presbyacusis. The tonal and speech prosthetic gain were significant in case of sudden hearing loss.
