Partition-Based Cache Replacement to Manage Shared L2 Caches

The Least recently used(LRU) replacement has been widely employed by on-chip shared caches. With the increase of cache associativity, the performance gap between LRU and theoretical optimal replacement algorithm is significant, motivating us to design alternative replacement algorithms to improve cache performance. We propose a Partition-based cache replacement(PCR) algorithm to manage multi-core shared L2 caches. PCR takes into consideration recency and frequency information of cache access, and cache resource interference among multiple competing applications. PCR is effective to filter out the less frequently reused blocks through a dynamic insertion/promotion policy based on the target partitions, and ensures that some fraction of the working set is retained in the cache to contribute to more hits. Our evaluation shows that PCR improves performance of an 8-core system by an average of 11.3% over LRU-based cache.

As the oil crisis and environment concerning deepen, the uses of renewable resources have attracted considerable attention. Polyol intended for synthesis of polyurethane polymers was prepared by a novel direct hydroxylation of soybean oil, alternative to petroleum- based process. The transformation can afford soybean oil polyol in excellent yield with a hydroxyl number up to 467.7 mg KOH/g in the presence of OsO4 as catalyst and NMO as oxidant. The major advantages of this approach are： two hydroxyl groups can be readily added to one double bond, replacing conventional two-step methods by an epoxidation step and then a ring opening step; a wide range of hydroxyl numbers can be obtained via varying catalyst loadings; the reaction can be performed at room temperature. The chemical structure of the polyol prepared was further characterized by chemical methods （hydroxyl number and iodine number） and spectra （1H NMR and FFIR spectroscopy）, which confirmed the cleavage of the double bonds and the produce of hydroxyl groups.

AIM To measure the leptin levels in patients with diarrheapredominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS-D) and analyze the relationship of leptin with clinical features, visceral sensitivity, mast cells, and nerve fibers. METHODS Forty-two patients with IBS-D fulfilling the Rome Ⅲ criteria and 20 age-and sex-matched healthy controls underwent clinical and psychological evaluations using validated questionnaires(including IBS Symptom Severity Scale, IBS-specific Quality of Life, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and Hamilton Depression Scale), along with colonoscopy, colonic mucosal biopsy, and visceral sensitivity testing. Serum leptin levels were assayed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Mucosal leptin expression and localization were evaluated using immunohistochemistry and *** leptin m RNA levels were quantified using quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Mast cell counts and activation rates were investigated by toluidine blue staining. Correlation analyses between these parameters were *** There were no statistically significant differences in age, gender, or body mass index between the IBS-D group and the control group. The median IBS Symptom Severity Scale score in the IBS-D group was 225.0(range, 100-475). The soil with petroleum contamination is one of the most studied soil ecosystems due to its rich microorganisms for hydrocarbon degradation and broad applications in bioremediation. However, our understanding of the genomic properties and functional traits of the soil microbiome is limited. In this study, we used high-throughput metagenomic sequencing to comprehensively study the microbial community from petroleum-contaminated soils near Tianjin Dagang oilfield in eastern China. The analysis reveals that the soil metagenome is characterized by high level of community diversity and metabolic versatility. The metageome community is predominated by 7-Proteobacteria and a-Proteobacteria, which are key players for petroleum hydrocarbon degradation. The functional study demonstrates over-represented enzyme groups and pathways involved in degradation of a broad set of xenobiotic aromatic compounds, including toluene, xylene, chlorobenzoate, aminobenzoate, DDT, methylnaph- thalene, and bisphenol. A composite metabolic network is proposed for the identified pathways, thus consolidating our identification of the pathways. The overall data demon- strated the great potential of the studied soil microbiome in the xenobiotic aromatics degradation. The results not only establish a rich reservoir for novel enzyme discovery but also provide putative applications in bioremediation.

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy(MHE) is a frequent neurological and psychiatric complication of liver cirrhosis. The precise pathogenesis of MHE is complicated and has yet to be fully elucidated. Studies in cirrhotic patients and experimental animals with MHE have indicated that gut microbiota dysbiosis induces systemic inflammation, hyperammonemia, and endotoxemia, subsequently leading to neuroinflammation in the brain via the gut-liver-brain axis. Related mechanisms initiated by gut microbiota dysbiosis have significant roles in MHE pathogenesis. The currently available therapeutic strategies for MHE in clinical practice, including lactulose, rifaximin, probiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation, exert their effects mainly by modulating gut microbiota dysbiosis. Microbiome therapies for MHE have shown promised efficacy and safety;however, several controversies and challenges regarding their clinical use deserve to be intensively discussed. We have summarized the latest research findings concerning the roles of gut microbiota dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of MHE via the gut-liver-brain axis as well as the potential mechanisms by which microbiome therapies regulate gut microbiota dysbiosis in MHE patients.
