Enriched environment elevates expression of growth associated protein-43 in the substantia nigra of SAMP8 mice

An enriched environment protects dopaminergic neurons from 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine（MPTP）-induced neuronal injury, but the underlying mechanism for this is not clear. Growth associated protein-43（GAP-43） is closely associated with neurite outgrowth and axon regeneration during neural development. We speculate that an enriched environment can reduce damage to dopaminergic neurons by affecting the expression of GAP-43. This study is designed to test this hypothesis. Three-month-old female senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8（SAMP8） mice were housed for 3 months in an enriched environment or a standard environment. These mice were then subcutaneously injected in the abdomen with 14 mg/kg MPTP four times at 2-hour intervals. Morris water maze testing demonstrated that learning and memory abilities were better in the enriched environment group than in the standard environment group. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry and western blot assays showed that m RNA and protein levels of GAP-43 in the substantia nigra were higher after MPTP application in the enriched environment group compared with the standard environment group. These findings indicate that an enriched environment can increase GAP-43 expression in SAMP8 mice. The upregulation of GAP-43 may be a mechanism by which an enriched environment protects against MPTP-induced neuronal damage.

Mesoscale Simulation for Polymer Migration in Confined Uniform Shear Flow

The structure and dynamics of confined single polymer chain in a dilute solution, either in equilibrium or at different shear rates in the uniform shear flow fields, were investigated by means of dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The no-slip boundary condition without density fluctuation near the wall was taken into account to mimic the environment of a nanochannel. The dependences of the radius of gyration, especially in three different di- rections, and the density profile of the chain mass center on the strength of the confinement and the Weissenberg number（Wn） was studied. The effect of the interaction between polymer and solvent on the density profile was also investigated in the cases of moderate and strong Wn. In the high shear flow, the polymer migrates to the center of the channel with increasing Wn. There is only one density profile peak in the channel center in the uniform shear flow, which is in agreement with the results of the experiments and theory.

Low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation is beneficial for enhancing synaptic plasticity in the aging brain

In the aging brain, cognitive function gradually dedines and causes a progressive reduction in the structural and functional plasticity of the hippocampus. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is an emerging and novel neurological and psychiatric tool used to investigate the neurobiology of cognitive function. Recent studies have demonstrated that low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation （〈1 Hz） ameliorates synaptic plasticity and spatial cognitive deficits in learning-impaired mice. However, the mechanisms by which this treatment improves these deficits during normal aging are still unknown. Therefore, the current study investigated the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation on the brain-derived neurotrophic factor signal pathway, synaptic protein markers, and spatial memory behavior in the hippocampus of normal aged mice. The study also investigated the downstream regulator, Fyn kinase, and the downstream effectors, synaptophysin and growth-associated protein 43 （both synaptic markers）, to determine the possible mechanisms by which transcranial magnetic stimulation regulates cognitive capacity. Transcranial magnetic stimulation with low intensity （110% average resting motor threshold intensity, 1 Hz） increased mRNA and protein levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, tropomyosin receptor kinase B, and Fyn in the hippocampus of aged mice. The treatment also upregulated the mRNA and protein expression of synaptophysin and growth-associated protein 43 in the hippocampus of these mice. In conclusion, brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling may play an important role in sustaining and regulating structural synaptic plasticity induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation in the hippocampus of aging mice, and Fyn may be critical during this regulation. These responses may change the structural plasticity of the aging hippocampus, thereby improving cognitive function.

Expression of BMP Receptors in Porcine Granulosa Cells (GCs) and Their Regulation by Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Effect of Al_(2)O_(3)fiber on twin intersections-induced dynamic recrystallization in fine-grained TiAl matrix composite

Excess pore pressure behavior and evolution in deep coalbed methane reservoirs

Room-temperature hydrogen adsorption in Pd nanoparticle decorated UiO-66-NH2 via spillover

To improve room-temperature hydrogen storage, palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were innovatively decorated by carbon bridge onto the amino-group functioned Zr-terephthalate metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 to reduce the diffusion energy barrier and then improve the hydrogen spillover effect. Powder X-ray diffraction shows broad Pd peak and retained UiO-66-NH_(2) integrity after Pd decoration. The hydrogen uptake capacity show that UiO-66-NH_(2)-Pd exhibits best hydrogen storage performance than UiO-66-NH_(2) and pristine UiO-66. The hydrogen up taken in Pd decorated UiO-66 (UiO-66-NH_(2)-1Pd) was close to 4 wt% under 20 MPa at room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that hydrogen adsorption energy of UiO-66-NH_(2)-Pd was −0.5897 eV, which was much lower than that of UiO-66-NH_(2) (−0.3716 eV) and UiO-66 (−0.2975 eV). Ultimately, Pd decorated NH_(2) group functioned UiO-66 enable improve storage capacities through hydrogen spillover under ambient conditions which could satisfy the demand for sustainable energy, especially for the long-term storage energy media.
