Strategic Admission Behavior and Its Implications: Evidence from a Cardiac Surgery Department

This paper examines a decentralized admission control system with partial capacity sharing in a hospital setting. The admission decision is made by each physician who is assigned a number of dedicated inpatient beds. A physician can “borrow” beds from other physicians if his dedicated beds are all occupied. We seek to understand the impact of the “borrowing cost” on physicians’ admission behavior. We find that (i) If the borrowing cost is low, a physician tends to admit lower-risk patients when either his or others’ capacity utilization is higher;(ii) If the borrowing cost is moderate, a physician tends to admit higher (lower)-risk patients when his (others’) capacity utilization is higher;and (iii) If the borrowing cost is high, a physician tends to admit higher-risk patients when either his or others’ capacity utilization is higher. We then empirically test and validate these findings. Our work demonstrates that when designing strategic admission control systems, it is important to quantify and perhaps then influence the magnitude of the borrowing cost to induce a proper level of competition without sacrificing the benefit of resource pooling.

Leaf trait networks(LTNs)visualize the intricate linkages reflecting plant trait-functional *** karst vegetation,developed from lithological dolomite and limestone,generally exhibits differential communities,possibly due to habitat rock exposure,soil depth,and soil physicochemical properties variations,leading to a shift from plant trait variation to functional ***,how soil and habitat quality affect the differentiation of leaf trait networks remains *** were constructed for typical dolomite and limestone habitats by analyzing twenty-one woody plant leaf traits across fifty-six forest subplots in karst *** differences between dolomite and limestone LTNs were compared using network *** network association of soil and habitat quality was analyzed using redundancy analysis(RDA),Mantle's test,and a random forest *** limestone LTN exhibited significantly higher edge density with lower diameter and average path length when compared to the dolomite *** indicates LTN differentiation,with the limestone network displaying a more compact architecture and higher connectivity than the dolomite *** specific leaf phosphorus and leaf nitrogen contents of dolomite LTN,as well as the leaf mass and leaf carbon contents of limestone LTN,significantly contributed to network degree and closeness,serving as crucial node traits regulating LTN ***,both habitat LTNs significantly correlated with soil nitrogen and phosphorus,stoichiometric ratios,pH,and organic carbon,as well as soil depth and rock exposure rates,with soil depth and rock exposure showing greater relative *** depth and rock exposure dominate trait network differentiation,with the limestone habitat exhibiting a more compact network architecture than the dolomite habitat.

Hydrolysis of TiCl_(4)solution is capable of preparing microscale TiO_(2)*** research studied the synthesis of microscale spherical TiO_(2)powders and the hydrolysis *** effects of the flow field generated by different agitators and baffles in the crystallizer,the initial free acid concentration,the initial equivalent TiO_(2)concentration,and the temperature on the hydrolysis progress and powder morphology were systematically *** results show that the flow field in a crystallizer can significantly affect the morphology and particle size of the powders,and the axial flow can improve the sphericity of the *** increased free HCl and equivalent TiO_(2)concentrations in the pregnant solution inhibit the forward hydrolysis reaction,prolong the time to reach equilibrium,and reduce the *** appropriate temperature matching the compositions of the pregnant solution is crucial for the powder morphology and *** with sizes ranging from around 5 um-40μm can be tuned under controlled flow field,solution compositions,and temperature *** addition,the Cheng and Wunderlich modified Avrami equation was used for the crystallization kinetic *** effects of the free HCl concentration,equivalent TiO_(2)concentration,and hydrolysis temperature are reflected in the reaction rate constant and active nuclei reduction *** the free HCl and equivalent TiO_(2)concentrations will reduce the reaction rate constant and accelerate the deactivation of the active nuclei,thus increasing the final powder size,while increasing the temperature will lead to the opposite results.

The compound was characterized usingIR, ￣1H NNIR, elementary analysis. The liquid crystalline pliasc transition wasstudied using optical polarized micrography and differential scanning calorimetry.

The alloy-type material Sb is widely used in the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)due to its high theoretical specific ***,its serious volume expansion problem during alloying/dealloying of Li~+limits its practical *** this work,C-Sb composite was constructed as anode material of LIBs by electrospinning route for the first time,Sb was introduced into the polyacrylonitrile-based hard carbon and coal tar pitch-based soft carbon composite amorphous carbon fiber with a diameter of 300-600 nm,which realized high cycling *** C-Sb-2(the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile to Sb source is 1:2)electrode displayed charge capacities of 1098.5,930.3,841.7,753.5,643.9 and 545.8 mAh·g^(-1)at 0.1,0.2,0.3,0.5,1 and 2 A·g^(-1),*** when the current density returned to 0.1 A·g^(-1),the charge capacity was 939.3 mAh·g^(-1),revealing good stability and *** introduction of Sb into the amorphous carbon improved its conductivity and addressed the volume expansion issue of high specific capacity Sb during charge/***-situ XRD analysis confirmed the high reversibility of the C-Sb-2 during charging and *** functional theory(DFT)calculations revealed the gradual enhancement of the interface interaction between Sb_(x)Li_(y) and amorphous carbon(AMC)with increasing lithium content,contributing to the anchoring of alloy nanoparticles on the AMC surface and buffering the volume change of the ***,the gradual lithiation of Sb facilitated the electron transfer from Sb_(x)Li_(y) to *** findings hold promise for designing lithium storage materials with exceptional performance,highlighting the potential of C-Sb composites as anode materials for efficient next-generation lithium storage.
