Digital synthesis of histological stains using micro-structured and multiplexed virtual staining of label-free tissue

Histological staining is a vital step in diagnosing various diseases and has been used for more than a century to provide contrast in tissue sections,rendering the tissue constituents visible for microscopic analysis by medical ***,this process is time consuming,labour intensive,expensive and destructive to the ***,the ability to virtually stain unlabelled tissue sections,entirely avoiding the histochemical staining step,has been demonstrated using tissue-stain-specific deep neural ***,we present a new deep-learning-based framework that generates virtually stained images using label-free tissue images,in which different stains are merged following a micro-structure map defined by the *** approach uses a single deep neural network that receives two different sources of information as its input:(1)autofluorescence images of the label-free tissue sample and(2)a“digital staining matrix”,which represents the desired microscopic map of the different stains to be virtually generated in the same tissue *** digital staining matrix is also used to virtually blend existing stains,digitally synthesizing new histological *** trained and blindly tested this virtual-staining network using unlabelled kidney tissue sections to generate micro-structured combinations of haematoxylin and eosin(H&E),Jones’silver stain,and Masson’s trichrome *** a single network,this approach multiplexes the virtual staining of label-free tissue images with multiple types of stains and paves the way for synthesizing new digital histological stains that can be created in the same tissue cross section,which is currently not feasible with standard histochemical staining methods.

Percutaneous liver biopsy complicated by hemobilia-associated acute cholecystitis

Liver biopsy is generally considered a safe and highly useful procedure. It is frequently performed in an outpatient setting for diagnosis and follow-up in numerous liver disorders. Since its introduction at the end of the 19th century, broad experience, new imaging techniques and special needles have significantly reduced the rate of complications associated with liver biopsy. Known complications of percutaneous biopsy of the liver include hemoperitoneum, subcapsular hematoma, hypotension, pneumothorax and sepsis. Other intra-abdominal complications are less common. Hemobilia due to arterio-biliary duct fistula has been described, which has only rarely been clinically expressed as cholecystitis or pancreatitis. We report a case of a fifteen year-old boy who developed severe acute cholecystitis twelve days after a percutaneous liver biopsy performed in an outpatient setting. The etiology was clearly demonstrated to be hemobilia-associated, and the clinical course required the performance of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The post operative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged home. Percutaneous liver biopsy is a safe and commonly performed procedure. However, severe complications can occasionally occur. Both medical and surgical options should be evaluated while dealing with these rare incidents.

Geochemical characteristics from tests of four modern planktonic foraminiferal species in the Indonesian Throughflow region and their implications

Test geochemistry of planktonic foraminifera is an indispensable tool in reconstructing past ocean hydrological changes. It is essential to investigate region-specific implications of test geochemistry,although those established from other regions can be broadly applied. In this study, characteristics of6180 and Mg/Ca from tests of four planktonic foraminiferal species, Globigerinoides ruber sensu stricto(s.s.), Globigerinoides sacculifer, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, from 60 coretop sediment samples retrieved from the Indonesian Throughflow(ITF) region were studied. These geochemical data were compared with modern hydrographic profiles in order to assess their relations and to investigate potential implications of test geochemical parameters in reconstructing past oceanographic change in the ITF region. Calcification depths of these four species were first estimated based on comparison between measured test δ180 and predicted calcite δ^(18)O that was calculated from modern temperature and salinity. The results indicate that G. ruber s.s. and G. sacculifer calcify within the mixedlayer at 0-50 m and 20-75 m, respectively, whereas P. obliquiloculata and N. dutertrei calcify within the thermocline at around 75 to 125 m. A combined study of excess Mg/Ca(difference between measured and predicted Mg/Ca) and salinity suggests that salinity exerts a negligible impact on test Mg/Ca of these foraminiferal species in the ITF region. Comparison of test Mg/Ca-derived temperatures with temperature profiles of the upper 200 m of the water column from the seas of the ITF region also indicate calcification depths of these species, which match well with the above estimations using test δ^(18)O. It further indicates that G. sacculifer may be more sensitive in reflecting changes in the depth of the mixedlayer, highlighting a potential use of Mg/Ca temperature difference between G. ruber s.s. and G. sacculifer in reconstructing the depth of the mixed-lay

Hemobilia due to hepatic artery aneurysm as the presenting sign of fibro-muscular dysplasia

Fibro-muscular dysplasia(FMD)is a rare but well documented disease with multiple arterial aneurysms. The patients,usually women,present with various clinical manifestations according to the specific arteries that are *** findings are aneurysmatic dilatations of medium-sized *** renal and the internal carotid arteries are most frequently affected, but other anatomical sites might be affected *** typical angiographic picture is that of a"string of beads". Common histological features are additionally described. Here we present a case of a 47-year-old woman,who was hospitalized due to intractable abdominal pain.A routine work-up revealed a liver mass near the portal *** a definite diagnosis was reached,the patient developed massive upper gastrointestinal *** order to control the hemorrhage,celiac angiography was performed revealing features of FMD in several arteries, including large aneurysms of the hepatic *** bleeding from one of these aneurysms into the biliary tree indicated selective embolization of the hepatic *** immediate results were satisfactory,and the 5 years follow-up revealed absence of any clinical symptoms.

We present an unusual case of portal vein thrombosis with a splanchnic hemangioma secondary to acute biliary pancreatitis. We report a 45-year-old patient, who has systemic arterial hypertension in treatment, was admitted for abdominal pain in the epigastrium, with irradiation to the right hypochondrium, accompanied by nausea and vomiting of 10 occasions of bile content, physical examination with pain in the right hypochondrium, Murphy positive. We have laboratory studies with a lipase of 788, so a diagnosis of pancreatitis is made with an etiology to be determined. The laboratories suggestive of acute biliary pancreatitis (lipase 788.71);an imaging study was subsequently performed (ultrasonography) with the result of stone in the common bile duct. A laparoscopy was performed with relative improvement, so he was discharged and returned 20 days after surgery due to abdominal pain of the same intensity in the left hypochondrium. Ending his hospitalization with a splenectomy for splenic hemangioma with portal vein thrombosis.

During the last years the theory of compressive sensing has found significant utility in the digital holography realm. In this letter we summarize and extend our previous theoretical results which determine the relation between the number of Fresnel samples required on the object illumination type, illumination wavelength, imaging geometry and sensor＇s size and resolution.

On the Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator

The relativistic harmonic oscillator represents a unique energy-conserving oscillatory system. The detailed characteristics of the solution of this oscillator are displayed in both weak- and extreme-relativistic limits using different expansion procedures, for each limit. In the weak-relativistic limit, a Normal Form expansion is developed, which yields an approximation to the solution that is significantly better than in traditional asymptotic expansion procedures. In the extreme-relativistic limit, an expansion of the solution in terms of a small parameter that measures the proximity to the limit (v/c) →1 yields an excellent approximation for the solution throughout the whole period of oscillations. The variation of the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of the solution from the weak- to the extreme-relativistic limits is displayed.

Metabolic syndrome: a risk factor for high intraocular pressure in the Israeli population

AIM: To evaluate the association among elevated intraocular pressure(IOP), the metabolic syndrome(Met S), body mass index(BMI), and some of their components in the Israeli ***: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of12 747 soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces, aged 35 y or older, who underwent a routine periodical medical examination between 1991 and 2004. None of the subjects received medical treatment for either glaucoma or ocular hypertension. High IOP(>21 mm Hg) was correlated with age, sex, arterial blood pressure, total blood cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking, BMI and Met ***: A statistically significant difference was found between the IOP of subjects with a low risk and higher risk for the development of Met S(P <0.0001 for males, P =0.0026 for females). A statistically significant positive correlation was found in male subjects between high BMI and elevated IOP(r =0.11677, P <0.0001).CONCLUSION: Met S and BMI were significantly more prevalent in subjects with increased IOP levels. We suggest that both should be taken into consideration in the assessment of glaucoma suspects.

Error Prediction in Industrial Robot Machining: Optimization Based on Stiffness and Accuracy Limit

Among the advantages of using industrial robots for machining applications instead of machine tools are flexibility, cost effectiveness, and versatility. Due to the kinematics of the articulated robot, the system behaviour is quite different compared with machine tools. Two major questions arise in implementing robots in machining tasks: one is the robot’s stiffness, and the second is the achievable machined part accuracy, which varies mainly due to the huge variety of robot models. This paper proposes error prediction model in the application of industrial robot for machining tasks, based on stiffness and accuracy limits. The research work includes experimental and theoretical parts. Advanced machining and inspection tools were applied, as well as a theoretical model of the robot structure and stiffness based on the form-shaping function approach. The robot machining performances, from the workpiece accuracy point of view were predicted.
