Prognostic roles of preoperative α-fetoprotein and des-γ-carboxy prothrombin in hepatocellular carcinoma patients

AIM:to clarify the utility of using des-γ-carboxy prothrombin(DCP)andα-fetoprotein(AFP)levels to predict the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in patients with hepatitis B virus(HBV)and the hepatitis C virus(HCV)***:A total of 205 patients with HCC(105patients with HBV infection 100 patients with HCV infection)who underwent primary hepatectomy between January 2004 and May 2012 were enrolled *** AFP and DCP levels were used to create interactive dot diagrams to predict recurrence within 2 years after hepatectomy,and cutoff levels were *** in the HBV and HCV groups were classified into three groups:a group with low AFP and DCP levels(LL group),a group in which one of the two parameters was high and the other was low(HL group),and a group with high AFP and DCP levels(HH group).Liver function parameters,the postoperative recurrence-free survival rate,and postoperative overall survival were compared between *** survival curves were compared by logrank test using the Kaplan-Meier *** analysis using a Cox forward stepwise logistic regression model was conducted for a ***:the preoperative AFP cutoff levels for recurrence within 2 years after hepatectomy in the HBV and HCV groups were 529.8 ng/m L and 60 m AU/m L,respectively;for preoperative DCP levels,the cutoff levels were 21.0 ng/m L in the HBV group and 67 m AU/m L in the HCV *** HBV group was significantly different from the other groups in terms of vascular invasion,major hepatectomy,volume of intraoperative blood loss,and surgical *** differences were found between the LL group,the HL group,and the HH group in terms of both mean disease-free survival time(MDFSt)and mean overall survival time(MOSt):64.81±7.47 vs 36.63±7.62 vs 18.98±6.17mo(P=0.001)and 85.30±6.55 vs 59.44±7.87 vs46.57±11.20 mo(P=0.018).In contrast,the HCV group exhibited a significant difference in tumor size,vascular invasion,volu

Inhibition effect of 2-amino-5-ethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole on corrosion behaviour of austenitic stainless steel type 304 in dilute HCl solution

the corrosion inhibition of type 304 austenitic stainless steel by 2-amino-5-ethyl-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole(ttD) compound and the electrochemical behaviour in dilute HCl solution were investigated through potentiodynamic polarization test, mass loss techniques and potential measurements. the results show that the organic derivative is highly effective with a maximum inhibition efficiency of 70.22% from mass loss analysis, while 74.2% is obtained from polarization tests. Observation of the scanning electron micrographs shows the absence of corrosion products due to electrochemical influence of ttD on the surface morphology of the steel. X-ray diffractometry reveals the absence of phase compounds and complexes on the steel samples after exposure. ttD adsorption on the steel surface obeys the Langmuir, Frumkin and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Corrosion thermodynamic calculations reveal the inhibition mechanism occurs through chemisorption process and results from statistical analysis depict the strong influence of inhibitor concentration on the electrochemical performance of the ttD.

Introduction Neutron-rich fluorine isotopes are interesting in their features. A recent discovery revealed that the stability of neutron-rich isotopes remarkably changes between oxygen and fluorine isotopes [1]. the fluorine isotopes are extended up to F with N=22 beyond the magic number of N=20 while the heaviest oxygen isotope is O with N=16. this feature may indicate that a strong attraction works between a valence proton on the d shell and valence neutrons in fluorine isotopes.

AIM: to investigate the long-term oncologic outcomes and prognostic factors in patients with obstructive colorectal cancer(CRC) at multiple Japanese ***: We identified 362 patients diagnosed with obstructive colorectal cancer from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2012 in yokohama Clinical Oncology Group's department of gastroenterological surgery. Among them, 234 patients with stage Ⅱ/Ⅲ disease who had undergone surgical resection of their primary lesions were analyzed, retrospectively. We report the long-term outcomes, the risk factors for recurrence, and the prognostic ***: the five-year disease free survival and cancer-specific survival were 50.6% and 80.3%, respectively. A multivariate analysis showed the ASAPS(HR = 2.23, P = 0.026), serum Albumin ≤ 4.0 g/d L(HR = 2.96, P = 0.007), t4 tumor(HR = 2.73, P = 0.002) and R1 resection(HR = 6.56, P = 0.02) to be independent risk factors for recurrence. Furthermore, poorly differentiated cancers(HR = 6.28, P = 0.009), a t4 tumor(HR = 3.46, P = 0.011) and R1 resection(HR = 6.16, P = 0.006) were independent prognostic factors in patients with obstructive ***: the outcomes of patients with obstructive CRC was poor. t4 tumor and R1 resection were found to be independent prognostic factors for both recurrence and survival in patients with obstructive CRC.

Process engineering has been seen as one of the vital tools for improving surface coating phenomena for advance application. In an attempt to improve the mechanical, physical and chemical performance of the steel structure for ex-tended application, Zn-CeO2/ZnCeO2-Al2SiO5 thin film composite was fabri-cated on mild steel using direct electrolytic route. Process variation of Al2SiO5 particulate ranges from 5 to 15 g per litre. the embedded coating was charac-terized using Scanning electron microscope (SEM). the chemical effect of the developed alloy was characterized through linear potentiodynamic polarization experiment and the performances of samples were examined in simulated 3.5% sodium chloride. the microhardness verification study proves that there is sig-nificant improvement in hardness trend. the tribological assessment indicated that there is less plastic deformation as a result of the counter body. In all, Zn-CeO2/Zn-CeO2-Al2SiO5 exhibits good stability, with agglomeration and great built up of crystal at the interface.

Brown envelop syndrome （BES） has remained a controversial issue in any debate centred on the Nigerian press, media professionalism and media ethics. It is one of the major setbacks of media growth in Nigeria. BES is a system whereby journalists collect money or other material gifts from news sources, company executives or event organizers to cover such events and probably give it the wildest publicity as the case may be. It symbolizes the rot that has plagued the Nigerian media industry since the early 1980s to date. this paper therefore builds from an empirical study by the same authors, as well as literature materials to argue that media professionalism and the enforcement of the various ethical codes that preach professionalism are the practical ways to ensure ethical conduct and behaviour amongst journalists and other categories of media practitioners, especially in Nigeria where these are missing. this, according to the paper, is the missing link in the quest to rid the media industry in Nigeria from the monster called BES.

the Effect of Electrolyte on Dye Sensitized Solar Cells Using Natural Dye from Mango (<i>M. indica</i>L.) Leaf as Sensitizer

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were fabricated with mango leaf dye extracts as natural dye sensitizers at pH value of 5.20 and temperature of 18.1°C. Methanol was used as dye-extracting solvent. DSSCs from dye extract of M. indica L. with KMnO4 electrolyte had the highest photocurrent density of 1.3 mA/cm2 and fill factor FF of 0.46 for the sun at its peak. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) had a photocurrent density of 1.3 mA/cm2 and FF of 0.8 at sundown. Potassium Iodide (KI), Potassium Bromide (KBr) and Mercury Chloride (HgCl2) electrolytes had 0.2 mA/cm2, 0.08 mA/cm2 and 0.02 mA/cm2 photocurrent densities respectively. the fill factors of 0.09, 0.03 and 0.003 respectively for sun overhead while 0.08 mA/cm2, 0.01 mA/cm2 and 0.01 mA/cm2 were the values of photocurrent densities respectively at sundown. the fill factors were 0.02, 0.0006 and 0.003 respectively at sundown. the maximum power Pmax of the DSSCs were 0.5 mW/cm2, 0.10 mW/cm2, 0.01 mW/cm2 and 0.012 mW/cm2 respectively at 1300 h at 1630 h 0.9 mW/cm2, 0.14 mW/cm2, 0.005 mW/cm2 and 0.0015 mW/cm2 respectively.
