The present moment is not the first time that America has found itself at war with a pathogen during a time of international conflict. Between crowded barracks at home and trenches abroad, wartime conditions helped enable the spread of influenza in the fall of 1918 during World War I such that an estimated 20%–40% of U.S. military members were infected. While the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic is unparalleled for most of today's population, it is essential to not view it as unprecedented lest the lessons of past pandemics and their effect on the American military be forgotten. This article provides a historical perspective on the effect of the most notable antecedent pandemic, the Spanish Influenza epidemic, on American forces with the goal of understanding the interrelationship of global pandemics and the military, highlighting the unique challenges of the current pandemic, and examining how the American military has fought back against pandemics both at home and abroad, both 100 years ago and today.

Vertical distribution processes of sediment contaminants in water were studied by flume experiments. Experimental results show that settling velocity of sediment particles and turbulence characteristics are the major hydrodynamic factors impacting distribution of pollutants, especially near the bottom where particle diameter is similar in size to vortex structure. Sediment distribution was uniform along the distance, while contaminant distribution slightly lagged behind the sediment. The smaller the initial sediment concentration was, the more time it took to achieve a uniform concentration distribution for suspended sediment. A contaminants transportation equation was established depending on mass conservation equations. Two mathematical estimation models of pollutant distribution in the overlying water considering adsorption and desorption were devised based on vertical distribution of suspended sediment: equilibrium partition model and dynamic micro-diffusion model. The ratio of time scale between the sediment movement and sorption can be used as the index of the models. When this ratio was large, the equilibrium assumption was reasonable, but when it was small, it might require dynamic micro-diffusion model.

The study analyses a 7.5-m-thick sedimentary succession deposited in the largest sandur(the Gwda sandur, a glacial outwash plain) in NW Poland, during the late Weichselian(MIS 2). Although the study site is located in the distal zone of the sandur, its sedimentological features and palaeohydrological parameters reflect the presence of an energetic, powerful environment typical of the proximal zone. Three sedimentary units were recognized in the studied sedimentary succession:(1) lower unit - fine-grained sands with ripple cross-lamination and horizontal lamination;(2) middle unit - gravelly coarse-grained sands and sandy gravels with planar cross-stratification;and,(3) upper unit - sands and gravelly sands with trough cross-stratification. Although the age of deposition of the sandur is accepted to be convergent with that of end-moraines of the same phase, the sediments in the distal zone of the Gwda sandur correlate with an earlier glaciation phase/subphase. Our findings hint at a complex problem: large sandurs such as the Gwda sandur were probably deposited over a long time, and their successions might record the textural and structural features of the proximal subenvironment, even in their distal parts due to deglaciation-related shifting of the proximal zone of a sandur. This paper presents a new approach to analysing the depositional processes in large sandurs, shows a new light on glaciofluvial water supply dynamics of distal parts of sandurs, and may solve several fundamental problems related to the sandur deposition.

This paper presents an improved self sustained oscillating controller circuit using LCC components for improving the overall efficiency of the system. It has a micro controller based active controller, which controls the performance from no-load up to full-load. The steady state characteristics are developed and a design example is given in detail. The proposed controller allows zero current switching at any loading condition which results in a reasonable reduction of power loss during switching with a promising efficiency. Analytical and experimental results verify the achievement the design specifications.

In this work,we report the dielectric properties of Single wall Carbon Nanotubes(SWCNTs)-based phantom that is mainly composed of gelatin and *** fabricated gelatin-based phantom with desired dielectric properties was fabricated and doped with different concentrations of SWCNTs(e.g.,0%,0.05%,0.10%,0.15%,0.2%,0.4%and 0.6%).The dielectric constants(realε′ and imaginaryε′)were measured at different positions for each sample as a function of frequency(0.5-20 GHz)and concentrations of SWCNTs and their averages were *** Cole–Cole plot(ε′ versusε′)was obtained for each concentration of SWCNTs and was used to obtain the static dielectric constantεs,the dielectric constant at the high limit of frequencyε∞ and the average relaxation timeτ.The measurements showed that the fabricated samples are in good homogeneity and the SWCNTs are dispersed well in the samples as an acceptable standard deviation is *** study showed a linear increase in the static dielectric constantτ and invariance of the average relaxation time τ and the value ofε∞ at room temperature for the investigated concentrations of SWCNTs.

A concrete numerical example of Z6-equivariant planar perturbed Hamiltonian polynomial vector fields of degree 5 having at least 24 limit cycles and the configurations of compound eyes are given by using the bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems and the method of detection functions. There is reason to conjecture that the Hilbert number H(2k + 1) ≥ (2k + 1)2 - 1 for the perturbed Hamiltonian systems.
