Effects of ethanol on the tonicity of corporal tissue and the intracellular Ca^2＋ concentration of human corporal smooth muscle cells

Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction （ED）; however, the acute effects of ethanol （EtOH） on penile tissue are not fully understood. We sought to investigate the effects of EtOH on corporal tissue tonicity, as well as the intracellular Ca^2＋ concentration （[Ca^2＋]i） and potassium channel activity of corporal smooth muscle. Strips of corpus cavernosum （CC） from rabbits were mounted in organ baths for isometric tension studies. Electrical field stimulation （EFS） was applied to strips precontracted with 10 μmol L^-1 phenylephrine as a control. EtOH was then added to the organ bath and incubated before EFS. The [Ca^2＋]i levels were monitored by the ratio of fura-2 fluorescence intensities using the fura-2 loading method. Single-channel and whole-cell currents were recorded by the conventional patch-clamp technique in short-term cultured smooth muscle cells from human CC tissue. The corpus cavernosal relaxant response of EFS was decreased in proportion to the concentration of EtOH. EtOH induced a sustained increase in [Ca^2＋]i in a dose-dependent manner, Extracellular application of EtOH significantly increased whole-cell K^＋ currents in a concentration-dependent manner （P 〈 0.05）. EtOH also increased the open probability in cell-attached patches; however, in inside-out patches, the application of EtOH to the intracellular aspect of the patches induced slight inhibition of Ca^2＋-activated potassium channel （KCa） activity. EtOH caused a dose-dependent increase in cavemosal tension by alterations to [Ca^2＋]i. Although EtOH did not affect KCa channels directly, it increased the channel activity by increasing [Ca^2＋]i. The increased corpus cavemosal tone caused by EtOH might be one of the mechanisms of ED after heavy drinking.

Nucleic acid-based bioactive substances have recently emerged as a new class of nextgeneration therapeutics, but their development has been limited by their relatively weakdelivery into target cells. Cationic liposomes have been studied as a means to enhance thestability of nucleic acid therapeutics in the bloodstream and improve their cellular *** nucleic acid therapeutics, siRNA and plasmid DNA have been extensively tested fordelivery using cationic liposomes. This review discusses recent progress in the applicationof cationic liposomes for the delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics.

Water-filling algorithm based approach for management of responsive residential loads

Integration of large number of electric vehicles(EVs)with distribution networks is devastating for conventional power system devices such as transformers and power lines *** paper proposes a methodology for management of responsive household appliances management and EVs with water-filling *** the proposed scheme,the load profile of a transformer is retained below its rated capacity while minimally affecting the associated *** the instantaneous demand at transformer increases beyond its capacity,the proposed methodology dynamically allocates demand curtailment limit(DCL)to each home served by *** DCL allocation takes convenience factors,load profile and information of flexible appliances into account to assure the comfort of all the *** proposed scheme is verified by modeling and simulating five houses and a distribution *** smart appliances such as an HVAC,a water heater,a cloth dryer and an EV are also modeled for the *** show that the proposed scheme performs to reduce overloading effects of the transformer efficiently and assures comfort of the consumers at the same time.

Characterization of recycled crumb rubber modified binders containing wax warm additives

This paper addresses the laboratory experiment of performance properties of recycled CRM binders containing artificially aged CRM binders with wax additives. The warm CRM binders were produced using two wax additives （LEADCAP and Sasobit） and then shortterm and long-term aged using the rolling thin film oven （RTFO） and pressure aging vessel （PAV） procedures. The recycled CRM binders were aged through the RTFO and PAV pro- cedures. A set of Superpave binder tests were carried out on the binders through the rotational viscometer, the dynamic shear rheometer （DSR）, and the bending beam rheometer （BBR）. In general, the results of this study indicated that （1） the addition of longterm aged （LTA） CRM binder can significantly increase the viscosity of the recycled CRM binders as expected, （2） the wax additives in recycled CRM binders were still effective to improve the viscosity and rutting properties even after experiencing the aging process, （3） the CRM binders containing wax additives showed the higher rutting resistance compared to the control CRM binders, （4） the recycled CRM binder containing wax additives was found to have less resistance to fatigue and low temperature cracking, （5） wax warm additives into the recycled CRM binders seemed to have a significant role for cracking properties, based upon their substantial amount.

Risk factors affecting pancreatic fistulas after pancreaticoduodenectomy

AIM: To analyze the risk factors of pancreatic leakage after ***: We retrospectively reviewed 172 consecutive patients who had undergone pancreatico-duodenectomy at Inha University Hospital between April 1996 and March 2006. We analyzed the pancreatic fistula rate according to the clinical characteristics, the pathologic and laboratory findings, and the anastomotic ***: The incidence of developing pancreatic fistulas in patients older than 60 years of age was 21.7% (25/115), while the incidence was 8.8% (5/57) for younger patients; the difference was significant (P = 0.03). Patients with a dilated pancreatic duct had a lower rate of post-operative pancreatic fistulas than patients with a non-dilated duct (P = 0.001). Other factors, including clinical features, anastomotic methods, and pathologic diagnosis, did not show any statistical difference. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that pancreatic fistulas are related to age and a dilated pancreatic duct. The surgeon must take these risk factors into consideration when performing a pancre-aticoduodenectomy.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of medicinal plants used by the Bentian tribe from Indonesia

Some selected medicinal plants used by Bentian tribe from Indonesia were evaluated for potential antimicrobial and antioxidant *** leaves stem bark and root of the plants were extracted with n-hexane,ethyl acetate and ethanol to give respective *** activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Candida albicans was determined by an agar well diffusion *** activity was assayed by the DPPH radical scavenging activity *** results showed that n-hexane,ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Cananga odorata,ethanolic extract of Chromolaena odorata,and ethanolic extracts of Hyptis capitata and Ampelocissus cinnamomeae displayed good activity against *** at 25–400μg/well of the extracts *** n-hexane and ethanol extracts of Chromolaena odorata and ***,and the n-hexane,ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Cananga odorata displayed more activity against *** than others at 25–400μg/well of the extracts *** most antioxidant activities against DPPH were displayed by the ethanol extracts of Ficus variegata stem bark,Leucosyke quadrinerva root and Clausena excavata leaves exhibiting 91%,91%and 86%inhibition,*** present results showed potential of some medicinal plants used by Bentian tribe from Indonesia as natural anti-microbial and anti-oxidant and potentially anti-inflammatory agents.

Engineering oxygen vacancy formation and distribution is a powerful route for controlling the oxygen sublattice evolution that affects diverse functional *** controlling of the oxygen vacancy formation process is particularly important for inducing topotactic phase transitions that occur by transformation of the oxygen *** we demonstrate an epitaxial nanocomposite approach for exploring the spatial control of topotactic phase transition from a pristine perovskite phase to an oxygen vacancy-ordered brownmillerite(BM)phase in a model oxide La_(0.7)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3)(LSMO).Incorporating a minority phase NiO in LSMO films creates ultrahigh density of vertically aligned epitaxial interfaces that strongly influence the oxygen vacancy formation and distribution in *** structural characterizations reveal strong interactions between NiO and LSMO across the epitaxial interfaces leading to a topotactic phase transition in LSMO accompanied by significant morphology evolution in *** the NiO nominal ratio as a single control parameter,we obtain intermediate topotactic nanostructures with distinct distribution of the transformed LSMO-BM phase,which enables systematic tuning of magnetic and electrical transport *** use of self-assembled heterostructure interfaces by the epitaxial nanocomposite platform enables more versatile design of topotactic phase structures and correlated functionalities that are sensitive to oxygen vacancies.

Effect of heat treatment on LPSO morphology and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-y-Gd alloys

The mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated under different Zn content and heat treatment conditions in a Mg-Zn-yGd cast alloy.A part of the long period stacking order(LPSO)phases transformed to W-M^ZnaRE?phases with an increase in Zn content from 0.9 at.%to 1.8 at.%,and the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)increased from 229 MPa to 248 *** solution treatment at 480°C,the content of the LPSO phase and strength sharply decreased in the Mg-1.8Zn-0.8y-0.8Gd alloy,whereas this change was not significantly observed in the Mg-0.9Zn-O.8y-O.8Gd *** solution treatment,the elongation significantly improved and the UTS sharply decreased in both *** lamellar and filminess LPSO phases were observed with aging treatment at 200℃.Moreover,the strengthening efficiency of lamellar and filminess LPSO phases was lower than that of the block LPSO ***,the UTS of the T6 state was lower than that of the as-cast alloy.

Second-order interference of true thermal light from a warm atomic ensemble in two independent unbalanced interferometers

We report the demonstration of a second-order interference experiment by use of thermal light emitted from a warm atomic ensemble in two spatially separated unbalanced Michelson interferometers(UMIs).This novel multipath correlation interference with thermal light has been theoretically proposed by Tamma[New ***.18,032002(2016)].In our experiment,the bright thermal light used for second-order interference is superradiantly emitted via collective two-photon coherence in Doppler-broadened cascade-type 87 Rb *** to the long coherence time of the thermal light from the atomic ensemble,we observe its second-order interference in the two independent UMIs by means of time-resolved coincidence *** temporal waveforms of the interfering thermal light in the two spatially separated UMIs exhibit similarities with the temporal two-photon waveform of time–energy entangled photon pairs in Franson *** results can contribute toward a better understanding of the relation between first-and second-order interferences that are at the heart of photonics-based quantum information science.

The enduring discussion,why plants produce secondary metabolites with pharmacologically and toxicologically active towards mammals traces back to the eminent role of medicinal plants in the millennia-old history of *** recent years,the concept of an animal plant warfare emerged,which focused on the co-evolution between plants and *** a reaction to herbivory,plants developed mechanical defenses such as thorns and hard shells,which paved the way for adapted animal *** evolved further defense systems by producing chemicals that exert toxic effects on the animals that ingest *** a result of this selective pressure,animals developed special enzymes,*** P450 monooxigenases(CyP450)that metabolize xenobiotic *** a next step in the evolutionary competition between plants and animals,plants evolved to produce non-toxic pro-drugs,which become toxic only after ingestion by animals through metabolization by enzymes such as *** these sequestered evolutionary developments call to mind an arms race,the term animal plant warfare has been *** evolutionary competition between plants and animals may help to better understand the modes of action of medicinal plants and to foster the efficient and safe use of phytotherapy nowadays.
