A steel dual-core self-centering brace （DC-SCB） is an innovative structural member that provides both energy dissipation and self-centering properties to structures, reducing maximum and residual drifts of structures in earthquakes. The axial deformation capacity of the DC-SCB is doubled by a parallel arrangement of two inner cores, one outer box and two sets of tensioning elements. This paper presents cyclic test results of a DC-SCB component and a full- scale one-story, one-bay steel frame with a DC-SCB. The DC-SCB that was near 8 m-long was tested to evaluate its cyclic behavior and durability. The DC-SCB performed well under a total of three increasing cyclic loading tests and 60 low- cycle fatigue loading tests without failure. The maximum axial load of the DC-SCB was near 1700 kN at an interstory drift of 2.5%. Moreover, a three-story dual-core self-centering braced frame （DC-SCBF） with a single-diagonal DC-SCB was designed and its first-story, one-bay DC-SCBF subassembly specimen was tested in multiple earthquake-type loadings. The one-story, one-bay subassembly frame specimen performed well up to an interstory drift of 2% with yielding at the column base and local buckling in the steel beam; no damage of the DC-SCB was found after all tests. The maximum residual drift of the DC-SCBF caused by beam local buckling was 0.5% in 2.0% drift cycles.

The deep cement mixing(DCM)is used to improve the capacity and reduce the settlement of the soft ground by forming cemented clay *** investigation on the mechanical behaviour of the DCM samples is limited to either laboratory-prepared samples or in-situ samples under unconfined *** this study,a series of drained and undrained triaxial shearing tests was performed on the in-situ cored DCM samples with high cement content to assess their mechanical *** is found that the drainage condition affects significantly the stiffness,peak and residual strengths of the DCM samples,which is mainly due to the state of excess pore water pressure at different strain levels,*** positive before the peak deviatoric stress and negative after the peak deviatoric stress,in the undrained *** slope of the failure envelope changes obviously with the confining pressures,being steeper at lower stress levels and flatter at higher stress *** strength parameters,effective cohesion and friction angle obtained from lower stress levels(c′0 andφ′0)are 400 kPa and 58°,respectively,which are deemed to be true for design in most DCM applications where the in-situ stress levels are normally at lower values of 50-200 ***,the computed tomography(CT)scanning system was adopted to visualize the internal structures of DCM *** is found that the clay pockets existing inside the DCM samples due to uneven mixing affect markedly their stress-strain behaviour,which is one of the main reasons for the high variability of the DCM samples.

Mg-Ni thin films for nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery negative electrode were prepared on three different substrates by using magnetron sputtering with compacted Ni and Mg mixture powder. The microstructure of Mg-Ni thin films deposited on the glass and the Ni foil substrate respectively was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the Mg-Ni thin films were in amorphous structure and the composition of the thin film was homogeneous. Electrochemical measurement show the discharge capacity of the thin film negative electrode deposited on the foam Ni substrate was 284.8mAh/g in 6M alkaline electrolyte and the internal resistance was much lower than that of the electrode prepared by the ball-milled powder during the charge-discharge cycle.

In order to improve the machining efficiency of ultrasonic milling,the easiest and most effective approach was started with the improvement of tool *** main objective of this research was to utilize rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM's) effectiveness in removing brittle materials to extend the applications of this independent,innovative manufacturing method (self-driving rotary ultrasonic machining),and to experimentally investigate its milling application on brittle *** designed tool was used in the conjunction with previously established RUM machine tools,and glass was selected as workpiece for *** interrelationship between feed rate and depth of cut was *** measuring the surface roughness of workpiece,the overall efficacy of utilizing RUM for milling was evaluated and *** assisted milling results in the reduction of milling resistance,which leads to a greater process rate.

Three different types of TiO2 nano powders were synthesized by a solution combustion synthesis （SCS） method using three different fuels and for comparison, another type of Ti2 nano powder was synthesized by calcination of titanyl hydroxide. These TiO2 nano powders were used to fabricate photoelectrodes for the dye-sensitized solar cell （DSSC） and their performance was compared to that of the DSSC fabricated with Degussa P25 TiO2. The results showed that the SCS TiO2 could work well as photoelectrode for DSSC. The SCS TiO2 contained impurities of C and/or S, thus exhibiting visible light absorption and reduced band gap. The open circuit voltage and the fill factor both varied little among the various TiO2 and thus both had little effect on the photoelectrical conversion efficiency （η）. However, the variation of r/was seen to be in quite a good agreement with that of the short circuit current （Isc）, suggesting that r/was dominated by Isc. lsc was found to be enhanced by light scattering effect due to the presence of large particles but reduced by high impurity content due to an increase in electron transfer resistance. In addition, the specific surface area of the powders was found to be an important factor affecting the Isc and thus the η.

This paper examines the influence of gravity on the bulk responses of a granular solid. The loading scenarios in this study include confined compression, rod penetration into a granular medium and discharging through an orifice. Similar loading and flow conditions are likely to be encountered in the stress and deformation regimes that regoliths are subjected to in extraterrestrial exploration activities including in situ resource utilisation processes. Both spherical and non-spherical particles were studied using the discrete element method （DEM）. Whilst DEM is increasingly used to model granular solids, careful validations of the simulation outcomes are rather rare. Thus in addition to exploring the effect of gravity, this paper also compares DEM simulations with experiments under terrestrial condition to verify whether DEM can produce satisfactory predictions. The terrestrial experiments were conducted with great care and simulated closely using DEM. The key mechanical and geometrical properties for the particles were measured in laboratory tests for use in the DEM simulations. A series of DEM computations were then performed under reduced gravity to simulate these experiments under extraterrestrial environment. It was found that gravity has no noticeable effect on the force transmission in the confined compression case; the loading gradient in the rod penetration is linearly proportional to the gravity; the mass flow rate in silo discharge is proportional to square root of the gravity and the angle of repose increases with reducing gravity. These findings are in agreement with expectation and existing scientific evidence.

In 1886,Senn stated that removing necrotic pancreatic and peripancreatic tissue would benefit patients with severe acute *** then,necrosectomy has been a mainstay of surgical procedures for infected necrotizing pancreatitis(NP).No published report has successfully questioned the role of ***,however,increasing evidence shows good outcomes when treating walled-off necrotizing pancreatitis without a *** literature concerning NP published primarily after 2000 was reviewed;it demonstrates the feasibility of a paradigm *** majority(75%)of minimally invasive necrosectomies show higher completion rates:between 80%and 100%.Transluminal endoscopic necrosectomy has shown remarkable results when combined with percutaneous drainage or a metallic *** morbidities range from 40%to 92%.Single-digit mortality rates have been achieved with transluminal endoscopic necrosectomy,but not with video-assisted retroperitoneal necrosectomy *** procedures without necrosectomy have evolved from percutaneous drainage to transluminal endoscopic drainage with or without percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy access for laparoscopic *** series have reached higher success rates of 79%-93%,and even 100%,using transcystic multiple drainage *** is becoming evident that transluminal endoscopic drainage treatment of walledoff NP without a necrosectomy is *** further refinement of the drainage procedures,a paradigm shift from necrosectomy to drainage is inevitable.
