Public Reaction to scientific Research via Twitter sentiment Prediction

Effectiveness of two conventional methods for seismic retrofit of steel and RC moment resisting frames based on damage control criteria

This study investigates the efficiency of two types of rehabilitation methods based on economic justification that can lead to logical decision making between the retrofitting schemes. Among various rehabilitation methods, concentric chevron bracing（CCB） and cylindrical friction damper（CFD） were selected. The performance assessment procedure of the frames is divided into two distinct phases. First, the limit state probabilities of the structures before and after rehabilitation are investigated. In the second phase, the seismic risk of structures in terms of life safety and financial losses（decision variables） using the recently published FEMA P58 methodology is evaluated. The results show that the proposed retrofitting methods improve the serviceability and life safety performance levels of steel and RC structures at different rates when subjected to earthquake loads. Moreover, these procedures reveal that financial losses are greatly decreased, and were more tangible by the application of CFD rather than using CCB. Although using both retrofitting methods reduced damage state probabilities, incorporation of a site-specific seismic hazard curve to evaluate mean annual occurrence frequency at the collapse prevention limit state caused unexpected results to be obtained. Contrary to CFD, the collapse probability of the structures retrofitted with CCB increased when compared with the primary structures.

Application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and cuckoo optimization algorithm for analyzing electro chemical machining process

Electrochemical machining process(ECM) is increasing its importance due to some of the specific advantages which can be exploited during machining *** process offers several special privileges such as higher machining rate,better accuracy and control,and wider range of materials that can be *** of too many predominate parameters in the process,makes its prediction and selection of optimal values really complex,especially while the process is programmized for machining of hard *** the present work in order to investigate effects of electrolyte concentration,electrolyte flow rate,applied voltage and feed rate on material removal rate(MRR) and surface roughness(sR) the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems(ANFIs) have been used for creation predictive models based on experimental *** the ANFIs 3D surfaces have been plotted for analyzing effects of process parameters on MRR and ***,the cuckoo optimization algorithm(COA) was used for selection solutions in which the process reaches maximum material removal rate and minimum surface roughness *** indicated that the ANFIs technique has superiority in modeling of MRR and sR with high prediction ***,results obtained while applying of COA have been compared with those derived from confirmatory experiments which validate the applicability and suitability of the proposed techniques in enhancing the performance of ECM process.

Energy budget and economic analysis in conventional and organic rice production systems and organic scenarios in the transition period in Iran

Compared to conventional agriculture, organic agriculture is reported to be more efficient and effective in reducing water and soil pollution, greenhouse gases （GHGs） emission and risk of human health. In additional, field management under organic condition can be useful for increasing energy efficiency. Rice is one of the important crops which are cultivated in two forms, organic and conventional, in Iran. In order to compare the energy efficiency and economic analysis of rice production in organic and conventional systems in Iran, needed informa- tion was collected by face-to-face questionnaire in 2011 and three scenarios were designed to predict the changes of energy budget and economic analysis in the transition period that included： 25%, 50% and 75% organic management in rice production. The results showed that all energy indexes were improved in organic rice production compared to conventional condition. Higher values of benefit to cost ratio, gross and net return and lower value of total cost of production were obtained from organic rice production which indicated that the organic management of farm improved economically in compar- ison with the conventional rice production system. The shares of direct and renewable energies were increased by approach to organic management. Increase in energy efficiency and productivity was predicted for the transition period but decrease trend in economic indexes was projected for this period in all scenarios. The main reason for decreasing economic indexes in organic scenarios was that the market price of organic rice was the same as that of conventional rice in the transition period.

Modeling of secondary treated wastewater disinfection by UV irradiation: Effects of suspended solids content

This work aimed to study UV-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, to propose a formulation of the kinetics of secondary treated wastewater disinfection and to underline the influence of suspended solids on the inactivation kinetics of these strains. some investigations were carried out for the validation of some simulation models, from the simplest, the kinetics model of Chick-Watson reduced to first order, to rather complex models such as multi-kinetic and Collins-selleck models. Results revealed that the involved processes of UV irradiation were too complex to be approached by a simplified formulation, even in the case of specific strains of microorganisms and the use of nearly constant UV radiation intensity. In fact, the application of Chick-Watson model in its original form is not representative of the kinetics of UV disinfection. Modification, taking into account the speed change during the disinfection process, has not significantly improved results. On the other hand, the application of Collins-selleck model demonstrates that it was necessary to exceed a least dose of critical radiation to start the process of inactivation. To better explain the process of inactivation, we have assumed that the action of disinfectant on the survival of lonely microorganisms is faster than its action on suspended solids protected or agglomerated to each others. We can assume in this case the existence of two inactivation kinetics during the processes （parallel and independent） of the first-order. For this reason, the application of a new kinetic model by introducing a third factor reflecting the influence of suspended solids in water on disinfection kinetics appeared to be determinant for modeling UV inactivation of P. aeruginosa in secondary treated wastewater.

Effect of microwave pretreatment on grinding and flotation kinetics of copper complex ore

The present study initially investigates the kinetics of microwave-assisted grinding and flotation in a porphyry copper *** tests were conducted on untreated and microwave-irradiated samples by varying the exposure time from 15 to 150 *** microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,and scanning electron microscopy were conducted to determine the mineral liberation and particle surface properties,and to perform mineralogical *** showed that the ore breakage rate constant monotonically increased by increasing the exposure time,particularly for the coarsest fraction size(400μm)due to the creation of thermal stress fractures alongside grain *** irradiation time(>60 s)led to the creation of oxidized and porous surfaces along with a dramatic change in particle morphologies that result in a substantial reduction of chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation rate constants and ultimate *** concluded that MW-pretreated copper ore was ground faster than the untreated variety,but the two types have slightly similar floatabilities.

Reliability mesh convergence analysis by introducing expanded control variates

The safety evaluation of engineering systems whose performance evaluation requires finite element analysis is a challenge in reliability ***,Adjusted Control Variates Technique(ACVAT)has proposed by the authors to solve this *** uses the results of a finite element method(FEM)model with coarse mesh density as the control variates of the model with fine mesh and efficiently solves FEM-based reliability *** however does not provide any results about the reliability-based mesh convergence of the problem,which is an important tool in ***-refinement analysis allows checking whether the numerical solution is sufficiently accurate,even though the exact solution is *** this study,by introducing expanded control variates(ECV)formulation,ACVAT is improved and the capabilities of the method are also extended for efficient reliability mesh convergence analysis ofFEM-based reliability *** the present study,the FEM-based reliability analyses of four practical engineering problems are investigated by this method and the corresponding results are compared with accurate results obtained by analytical solutions for two *** results confirm that the proposed approach not only handles the mesh refinement progress with the required accuracy,but it also reduces considerably the computational cost of FEM-based reliability problems.
