Effects of Ving Tsun sticking-hand training on upper-limb sensorimotor performance in community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults: A randomized controlled trial

Objective:To evaluate the effects of Ving Tsun(VT)sticking-hand training on upper-limb joint position sense and muscular performance in community-dwelling middle-aged and older ***:Thirty-three adults were randomly allocated to either a VT group or a control *** VT group received VT sticking-hand training twice per week for 3 *** were taken before and after the intervention *** primary outcome was elbow-joint repositioning error,which was measured by an elbow-joint passive positioning and active repositioning test using a universal *** outcomes were upper-limb muscles'peak force and time taken to reach peak force as measured by a hand-held ***:No significant time,group or time-by-group interaction effects were found for elbow-joint repositioning error or upper-limb muscle peak force *** flexor time to peak force decreased by 33.8%from pre-test to post-test in the VT group(P=0.007).Shoulder abductor,internal and external rotator,and elbow extensor times to peak force decreased by 30.0%-35.9%in the VT%roup(Py 30.4%-37.1%in the control group(Pconclusions:VT sticking-hand training does not improve elbow-joint position sense or the maximum strength of upper-limb muscles in middle-aged and older ***,VT can improve shoulder flexor muscles'time to reach peak force in these *** had no obvious effect on the time required to reach peak force in other shoulder muscles and elbow extensors.

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias(AD/ADRD)affects more than 50 million people worldwide but there is no clear therapeutic option affordable for the general patient ***,drug repositioning studies featuring collaborations between academic institutes,medical centers,and hospitals are generating novel therapeutics candidates against these devastating diseases and filling in an important area for healthcare that is poorly represented by pharmaceutical *** drug repositioning studies converge expertise from bioinformatics,chemical informatics,medical informatics,artificial intelligence,high throughput and high-content screening and systems *** also take advantage of multi-scale,multi-modality datasets,ranging from transcriptomic and proteomic data,electronical medical records,and medical imaging to social media information of patient behaviors and emotions and epidemiology profiles of disease populations,in order to gain comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms and drug *** proposed a recursive drug repositioning paradigm involving the iteration of three processing steps of modeling,prediction,and validation to identify known drugs and bioactive compounds for AD/*** recursive paradigm has the potential of quickly obtaining a panel of robust novel drug candidates for AD/ADRD and gaining in-depth understanding of disease mechanisms from those repositioned drug candidates,subsequently improving the success rate of predicting novel hits.

Titanium-aluminium-nitride(Ti_(1-x)Al_(x)N)coatings were deposited by close-field un balanced magnetron sputtering on M42 steel substrates and Wc-6wt%co inserts at 450℃.The tribological behavior was analyzed by sliding against steel and Wc-6wt%co balls,while the turning performance was evaluated by a conventional tu rning machine at high cutting speeds without using *** the tribological tests,the formation of transfer layer and the variations of hardness of the co atings played an important role for sliding against steel *** the coating s sliding against Wc-6wt%co balls,the Ti-Al-N coatings showed a similar frictio n coefficient,but the TiN coating exhibited a lower *** difference could be explained by the tri-oxidation wear *** the turning tests,a super ior cutting performance of the coating was found at x=0.45,which endured 38 min utes before the tool flank wear reached the maximum value of 0.3mm,whereas only 20 minutes were endured for the TiN *** excellent performance of the c oatings in the turning tests could be explained by the enhanced mechanical prope rties and oxidation/diffusion resistance of the coatings.

confidence Intervals for the Mean of Non-Normal Distribution: Transform or Not to Transform

In many areas of applied statistics, confidence intervals for the mean of the population are of interest. confidence intervals are typically constructed as-suming normality although non-normally distributed data are a common occurrence in practice. Given a large enough sample size, confidence intervals for the mean can be constructed by applying the central Limit Theorem or by the bootstrap method. Another commonly used method in practice is the back-transformation method, which takes on the following three steps. First, apply a transformation to the data such that the transformed data are normally distributed. Second, obtain confidence intervals for the transformed mean in the usual manner, which assumes normality. Third, apply the back- transformation to obtain confidence intervals for the mean of the original, non-transformed distribution. The parametric Wald method and a small sample likelihood-based third order method, which can address non-normality, are also reviewed in this paper. Our simulation results suggest that common approaches such as back-transformation give erroneous and misleading results even when the sample size is large. However, the likelihood-based third order method gives extremely accurate results even when the sample size is small.

Leptotrichia hongkongensis ***.,a novel Leptotrichia species with the oral cavity as its natural reservoir

A straight, non-sporulating, Gram-variable bacillus (HKU24T) was recovered from the blood culture of a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma. After repeated subculturing in BAcTEc Plus Anaerobic/F blood culture broth, HKU24T grew on brucella agar as non-hemolytic, pinpoint colonies after 96 h of incubation at 37 °c in an anaerobic environment and aerobic environment with 5% cO2. Growth was enhanced with a streak of Staphylococcus aureus. HKU24T was non-motile and catalase-negative, but positive for alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and α-glucosidase. It hydrolyzed phenylphosphonate and reduced resazurin. 16S rRNA, groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB sequencing showed that HKU24T occupies a distinct phylogenetic position among the Leptotrichia species, being most closely related to Leptotrichia trevisanii. Using HKU24T groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB gene-specific primers, fragments of these genes were amplified from one of 20 oral specimens. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, we propose a new species, Leptotrichia hongkongensis sp. nov., to describe this bacterium.

Experimental study of path planning problem using EMcOA for a holonomic mobile robot

In this paper,a comparative study of the path planning problem using evolutionary algorithms,in comparison with classical methods such as the A*algorithm,is presented for a holonomic mobile *** configured navigation system,which consists of the integration of sensors sources,map formatting,global and local path planners,and the base controller,aims to enable the robot to follow the shortest smooth path ***-based mapping is used for scoring paths efficiently,allowing the determination of collision-free trajectories from the initial to the target *** work considers the evolutionary algorithms,the mutated cuckoo optimization algorithm(McOA)and the genetic algorithm(GA),as a global planner to find the shortest safe path among others.A non-uniform motion coefficient is introduced for McOA in order to increase the performance of this algorithm.A series of experiments are accomplished and analyzed to confirm the performance of the global planner implemented on a holonomic mobile *** results of the experiments show the capacity of the planner framework with respect to the path planning problem under various obstacle layouts.

Framework for atomic-level characterisation of quantum computer arrays by machine learning

Atomic-level qubits in silicon are attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing;however,their quantum properties and controllability are sensitive to details such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise *** work combines machine learning techniques with million-atom simulations of scanning tunnelling microscopic(STM)images of dopants to formulate a theoretical framework capable of determining the number of dopants at a particular qubit location and their positions with exact lattice site precision.A convolutional neural network(cNN)was trained on 100,000 simulated STM images,acquiring a characterisation fidelity(number and absolute donor positions)of>98% over a set of 17,600 test images including planar and blurring noise commensurate with experimental *** formalism is based on a systematic symmetry analysis and feature-detection processing of the STM images to optimise the computational *** technique is demonstrated for qubits formed by single and pairs of closely spaced donor atoms,with the potential to generalise it for larger donor *** method established here will enable a high-precision post-fabrication characterisation of dopant qubits in silicon,with high-throughput potentially alleviating the requirements on the level of resources required for quantum-based characterisation,which will otherwise be a challenge in the context of large qubit arrays for universal quantum computing.

Low DHEAS levels are associated with depressive symptoms in elderly chinese men： results from a large study

This study investigated the association between depressive symptoms in elderly chinese men and the total testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone （DHEA）, DHEA sulphate （DHEAS）, oestradiol and sex hormone-binding globulin （SHBG） levels, and the free androgen index. cross-sectional data from 1147 community-dwelling elderly men, aged 65 and older, were used. Depressive symptoms were measured using the chinese Geriatric Depression Scale （GDS）. Total testosterone, free testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, total oestradiol, the free androgen index and SHBG levels were assessed. DHEA was significantly associated with GDS score, and there was a trend towards DHEAS association, but this was not significant （p=-0. 110, P=0.015; p=-0.074, P=0.055）. However, no association was seen between depressive symptoms and total testosterone levels, free testosterone levels, oestradiol levels or SHBG levels. In terms of the presence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms, there were no statistically significant differences between patients in the lowest quartile of sex steroid hormone levels and those in other quartiles of sex steroid hormone levels. Similarly to Western studies, our study shows that DHEA and DHEAS levels are associated with depressive symptoms.

In the field of several complex variables, the Greene-Krantz conjecture, whose consequences would be far reaching, has yet to be proven. The conjecture is as follows： Let D be a smoothly bounded domain in cn. Suppose there exists {gj} c Aut（D） such that {gj（z）} accumulates at a boundary point p ∈δD for some z c D. Then DD is of finite type at p. In this paper, we prove the following result, yielding further evidence to the probable veracity of this important conjecture： Let D be a bounded convex domain in c2 with c2 boundary. Suppose that there is a sequence {gj} Aut（D） such that {gj（z）} accumulates at a boundary point for some point z ∈ D. Then if p E OD is such an orbit accumulation point, OD contains no non-trivial analytic variety passing through p.
