Habitat relationships of reptiles in pine beetle disturbed forests of Alabama,*** guidelines for a modified drift-fence sampling method

Understanding vertebrate habitat relationships is important to promote management strategies for the longterm conservation of many.species. Using a modified drift fence method, we sampled reptiles and compared habitat variables within the william B. Bankhead National Forest （BNF） in Alabama, U.S.A from April 2005 to j.ne 2006. we captured 226 individual reptiles representing 19 species during 564 total trap nights. we used canonical correspondence analy.is to examine habitat associations for the reptiles sampled and we detected a distinct habitat gradient ranging from sites with greater litter depth and percent canopy.cover to more open sites with greater woody. herbaceous, and coarse woody.debris （CwD） coverage, and CwD volume. Little brown skinks Scincella lateralis and eastern worm snakes Carphophis a. arnoenus were associated with sites with greater litter depth and canopy.cover, whereas eastern fence lizards Sceloporus undulatus, copperheads Agkistrodon contortrix, and gray.ratsnakes Pantherophis spiloides were associated with sites possessing greater CwD coverage and volume. we found that disturbances due to the southern pine beetle Dendroctonus frontalis were likely.important for influencing reptile distributions through the creation of canopy.gaps and fallen coarse woody.debris. Compared to other studies, our modified drift-fence trap technique was successful for sampling larger snake species （66 snakes in 564 trap nights）. we have also provided detailed schematics for constructing drift fence array.and box traps used in this study

we report the detection of aγ-ray.bubble spanning at least 100deg2 in ultra-high energy.UHE)up to a few PeV in the direction of the star-forming region Cy.nus X,imply.ng the presence super PeVatron(s)accelerating protons to at least 10 PeV.A log-parabola form with the photon indexΓ(E)=(2.71±0.02)+(0.11±0.02)×log10(E/10 TeV)is found fitting the gamma-ray.energy.spectrum of the bubble *** sources,“hot spots”correlated with very.massive molecular clouds,and a quasi-spherical amorphousγ-ray.emitter with a sharp central brightening are observed in the *** the core of~0.5°,spatially.associating with a region containing massive OB association(Cy.nus OB2)and a microquasar(Cy.nus X-3),as well as previously.reported multi-TeV sources,an enhanced concentration of UHEγ-ray. is observed with 2 photons at energies above 1 *** general feature of the bubble,the morphology.and the energy.spectrum,are reasonably.reproduced by.the assumption of a particle accelerator in the core,continuously.inj.cting protons into the ambient medium.

Phosphorus export by.runoff from agricultural field plots with different crop cover in Lake Taihu watershed

Runoff and soil losses from agricultural fields are investigated as maj.r nonpoint sources of phosphorus (P) entering lakes of Eastern China. There is relatively.little information on P transport from ricefield and cropland of Lake Taihu watershed in Eastern China. Soil and P in surface runoff from a series of plots in the watershed were evaluated under simulated rainfall conditions. The obj.ctives of this study.were to evaluate the effects of crop cover, slope, and fertilizer application on P concentrations in surface runoff and eroded soil. Accumulated sediment y.elds varied from 7.1 to 300 g/m2 for croplands, depending on management practices. For all experiment plots, weighted average concentrations of total-P (TP), dissolved P (DP) and particulate P (PP) are much higher than 0.02 mg/L, the limiting concentration for lake water. This result showed the potential contamination of lake water from agricultural surface runoff. Accumulated TP losses were 3.8 and 18.8 mg/m2 for ricefield and cropland, respectively. The estimated annual loss of TP was 0.74 kg/(hm2 · a) for cropland. Most of P loss is in the PP form, which accounts for more than 90% of TP loss for cropland.

Ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity.renormalization group calculations for neutron-rich P,Cl,and K isotopes

Neutron-rich P,Cl,and K isotopes,particularly.those with neutron numbers of approximately.N=28,have attracted extensive experimental and theoretical *** utilize the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity.renormalization group approach,based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces,to investigate the exotic properties of these *** calculations of the low-ly.ng spectra are performed.A key.finding is the level inversion between 3/2_(1)^(+)and 1/2_(1)^(+)states in odd-A isotopes,attributed to the inversion ofπ0xod_(3/2) andπls_(1/2) single-particle *** ab initio calculations,which incorporate the three-nucleon forces,correlate closely.with existing experimental *** calculations of effective proton single-particle energies provide deeper insights into the shell evolution for Z=14 and 16 *** results indicate that the three-body.force play. important roles in the shell evolution for Z=14 and 16 sub-shells with neutron numbers ranging from 20 to ***,sy.tematic ab initio calculations are conducted for the low-ly.ng spectra of odd-odd *** results correspond with experimental data and provide new insights for future research into these isotopes up to and bey.nd the drip line.

Surgeon preferences in the treatment of thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis

Mechanosy.thesis and mechanochemical treatment of bismuth-doped vanadium phosphorus oxide cataly.ts for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhy.ride

Three Bi-doped vanady. py.ophosphate cataly.ts were prepared via dihy.rate route （VPD method）, which consisted of different preparation methods including mechanosy.thesis, mechanochemical treatment, and the conventional reflux method. The cataly.ts produced by.the above three methods were characterized by.x-ray.diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy.（SEM）, and temperature programmed reduction （TPR）. Cataly.ic evaluation for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhy.ride （MA） was also carried out. The XRD patterns of all the Bi-doped cataly.ts showed the main peaks of py.ophosphate phase. Lower intensity.peaks were observed for the mechanochemically.treated Bi-doped cataly.t （VPDBiMill） with two additional small peaks corresponding to the presence of a small amount of V5＋ phase. The TPR profiles showed that the highest amount of active oxy.en species, i.e, V4＋–O- pair, responsible for n-butane activation, was removed from VPDBiMill. Furthermore, from the cataly.ic test results, the graph of selectivity.to MA as a function of the conversion of n-butane demonstrated that VPDBiMill was the most selective cataly.t. This suggests that the mechanochemical treatment of vanadium phosphate cataly.t （VPDBiMill） is a potential method to improve the cataly.ic properties for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhy.ride.

The sex-biased dispersal and kinship dy.amics are important factors shaping the spatial distribution of individuals and are key.parameters affecting a variety.of ecological and evolutionary.***,we studied the spatial distribution of related individuals within a population of corn mice Calomy. musculinus in a seasonal cy.le to infer dispersal *** sampling was carried out from spring 2005 to winter 2006 in field borders of intensively.managed *** data from 346 individuals with 9 microsatellites showed spatial genetic structure was weak for males,but not for *** results indicate a complex spatial kinship dy.amic of related females across all ***,contrary.to our expectations,dispersal distances decrease with the increase of the population ***,male dispersal distances were greater when population abundance increased and thus the availability.of active *** disperse greater distances to mate and sire offspring with distant females as a possible inbreeding avoidance *** study.shows that *** is capable of much greater scattering distances than previously.reported and that dispersal occurs fluidly.and without barriers across the *** indirect benefit of dispersal on individual fitness could be related to relaxing the competition in the natal area and increasing the mating *** study.highlights the value of combining genetic relatedness,fieldwork observations,and behavioral data to estimate dispersal at a fine geographical scale.
