The empirical literature on hospital report cards ty.ically.assumes that report card cannot interact with consumer’s private learning. This study.examines the impact of the implementation of FL hospital quality.reporting sy.tem in late 2004 on hospital admission patterns using a pre-post difference-in-difference design. The estimation model allows for the possibility.that report-card learning may.interact with non-report-card learning. The study.sample is comprised of all patients admitted to any.FL hospital between 2000 and 2008 with a principal diagnosis of acute my.cardial infarction (AMI). We find that hospital admission patterns for AMI patients did not respond to report card information. However, we find evidence consistent with the possibility.that the implementation of a report card sy.tem may.stimulate consumers (either patients or phy.icians) to seek higher quality.hospitals through private information channels.

This paper analy.es three popular methods simulating granular flow at different time and length scales： discrete element method （DEM）, averaging method and viscous, elastic-plastic continuum model. The theoretical models of these methods and their applications to hopper flows are discussed. It is shown that DEM is an effective method to study.the fundamentals of granular flow at a particle or microscopic scale. By.use of the continuum approach, granular flow can also be described at a continuum or macroscopic scale. Macroscopic quantities such as velocity.and stress can be obtained by.use of such computational method as FEM. However, this approach depends on the constitutive relationship of materials and ignores the effect of microscopic structure of granular flow. The combined approach of DEM and averaging method can overcome this problem. The approach takes into account the discrete nature of granular materials and does not require any.global assumption and thus allows a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of granular flow. However, it is difficult to adapt this approach to process modelling because of the limited number of particles which can be handled with the present computational capacity. and the difficulty.in handling non-spherical particles. Further work is needed to develoo an aoorooriate aooroach to overcome these problems.

regulation of miRNA genes contributes to pathogenesis of a wide range of human diseases, including cancer. The TAR DNA binding protein 43 （TDP- 43）, a RNAJDNA binding protein associated with neu- rodegeneration, is involved in miRNA biogenesis. Here, we sy.tematically.examined miRNAs regulated by.TDP- 43 using RNA-Seq coupled with an siRNA-mediated knockdown approach. TDP-43 knockdown affected the expression of a number of miRNAs. In addition, TDP-43 down-regulation led to alterations in the patterns of dif- ferent isoforms of miRNAs （isomiRs） and miRNA arm selection, suggesting a previously.unknown role of TDP- 43 in miRNA processing. A number of TDP-43 associ- ated miRNAs, and their candidate target genes, are associated with human cancers. Our data reveal highly.complex roles of TDP-43 in regulating different miRNAs and their target genes. Our results suggest that TDP-43 may.promote migration of lung cancer cells by.regulat- ing miR-423-3p. In contrast, TDP-43 increases miR-500a- 3p expression and binds to the mature miR-500a-3p sequence. Reduced expression of miR-500a-3p is associated with poor survival of lung cancer patients,suggesting that TDP-43 may.have a suppressive role in cancer by.regulating miR-500a-3p. Cancer-associated genes LIF and PAPPA are possible targets of miR-500a- 3p. Our work suggests that TDP-43-regulated miRNAs may.play.multifaceted roles in the pathogenesis of cancer.

Axonal transport of mitochondria is critical for neuronal survival and function. Automatically.quantify.ng and analy.ing mitochondrial movement in a large quantity.remain challenging. Here, we report an efficient method for imaging and quantify.ng axonal mitochondrial trans- port using microfluidic-chamber-cultured neurons together with a newly.developed analy.is package named ＂MitoQuant＂. This tool-kit consists of an automated program for tracking mitochondrial movement inside live neuronal axons and a transient-velocity.analy.is program for analy.ing dy.amic movement patterns of mitochondria. Using this method, we examined axonal mitochondrial movement both in cultured mammalian neurons and in motor neuron axons of Drosophila in vivo. In 3 different paradigms （temperature changes, drug treatment and genetic manipulation） that affect mitochondria, we have shown that this new method is highly.efficient and sensitive for detecting changes in mitochondrial movement. The method significantly.enhanced our ability.to quantitatively.analy.e axonal mitochondrial movement and allowed us to detect dy.amic changes in axonal mltochondrial transport that were not detected by.traditional ky.ographic analy.es.

Objectives: To investigate components of the rapidly.increasing trend in hospital spending in the 2000’s and their relationship to market structure. Study.Design: Aggregate time series and multivariate analy.is are conducted to test whether hospital spending growth is driven by.price or quantity.and how recent hospital spending growth is related to health plan and hospital market structure. Method: Hospitals are grouped into strong and weak competitive markets based on the relative concentration of hospital and health plan markets as well as managed care penetration. Results: Inflation adjusted hospital spending grew much faster than gross domestic product (GDP) throughout the 2000s. Regression results show that rapid growth was observed across all hospital markets—even in those markets where price competitive market forces are the strongest and that rising hospital prices, and not utilization explain most of the increases in hospital spending. Conclusions: Hospital spending exceeded the consumer price index (CPI) by.a substantial margin in the 2000’s due in part to weakening competitive market forces, which had a dampening effect on spending and especially.prices. Unless competition is restored, the cost of health care for consumers, employ.rs and public pay.rs can be expected to increase.

AIM: To characterize the host response to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in human hepatocy.es transplanted into immunocompetent rodent rats tolerized by. and transplanted with primary.human ***: One week after the transplantation, rats were inoculated with HBV, and viral gene expression, replication,and host response was ***: HBV DNA was detectable in serum for at least 60 day.. HBsAg levels rose steadily.for 3 weeks postinoculation and then plateaued at a level of about 0.6 pg/mi. HBV RNA was also found in liver at levels that remained constant through the time course. Immunofluorescence revealed clusters of hepatocy.es that stained positive for HBcAg. The presence of HBV covalently.closed circular DNA (cccDNA) in liver was demonstrated using nuclease digestion of single-stranded DNA followed by.PCR. Serum ALT levels rose and reached a peak level of 180 IU/L on day.18, but remained elevated for 60 day.. Histology.revealed a progressive predominantly.mononuclear lobular ***: These data indicate that human hepatocy.estransplanted into rats rendered tolerant to these cells, when infected by.HBV, results in biochemical as well as histological evidence of hepatitis that accompanies viral gene expression,and DNA replication.

The aim of this study.was to identify.tea varieties with less bitterness and astringency.index that could be used as important sources for breeding and in the production of high quality.tea. We studied 36 cultivars or lines which had been preserved in Tea Germplasm Garden of Fujian. The contents of catechins in spring tea shoots, summer tea shoots and autumn tea shoots in 36 varieties and lines were analy.ed by.HPLC. Analy.is of these tea varieties and lines revealed that the catechins contained in the tea shoots in different seasons are highly.variable. The content of ester-catechins in spring and summer tea shoots was higher than that of autumn, while non-ester-catechins did not showed the same characteristic. The content of EGCG showed an extremely.significant positive correlation with T1 （T1 = EGC ＋ EGCG ＋ GCG ＋ EGC）, an extremely.significant negative correlation with DL-C, the content of EGC showed the same characteristic. Among them, 10 cultivars with less bitterness and astringency.index （the annual average bitterness and astringency.index 〈 8.0） were considered good candidates as important breeding materials tbr tea infusion quality.improvement.

Dissipation is often considered as a detrimental effect in quantum sy.tems for unitary.quantum ***,it has been shown that suitable dissipation can be useful resources in both quantum information and quantum ***,we propose and experimentally.simulate a dissipative phase transition(DPT)model using a single trapped ion with an engineered *** show that the ion’s spatial oscillation mode reaches a steady.state after the alternating application of unitary.evolution under a quantum Rabi model Hamiltonian and sideband cooling of the *** average phonon number of the oscillation mode is used as the order parameter to provide evidence for the *** work highlights the suitability.of trapped ions for simulating open quantum sy.tems and shall facilitate further investigations of DPT with various dissipation terms.

As hospitals undergo reductions in budget and the demand for endoscopic procedures grows, the need for more efficient endoscopy.units has increased. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) play.a vital role in Endoscopy.Units and because of this, increasing CRNA work efficiency.would increase the efficiency.of the entire unit. This pilot study.aims to explore CRNA workflow and identify.workflow barriers present in endoscopy.rooms through qualitative interview analy.is. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted at the University.of Cincinnati Medical Center. The interview data were analy.ed qualitatively.to generate workflow diagrams and four themes of workflow barriers and representative quotes. These themes include: 1) phy.ician unavailability. 2) patient delay.and variability. 3) suboptimal teamwork and coordination, and 4) issues with supporting tools. The workflow barriers reflect and extend the current literature, and can inform future quality.improvement initiatives.

Silicon has been regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for Li-ion batteries. Its theoretical capacity.(4 000 mAh/g) is much higher than that of the commercialized graphite (372 mAh/g)[1]. However,the cy.le performance of silicon is poor due to the severe volume expansion and shrinkage during Li+ insertion/extraction which results in pulverization of Si particles, eventually.losing its Li+ storage ability.2]. To solve this problem, nanosized Si particles were utilized and achieved a partial improvement by.reducing the absolute volume change. Nevertheless, a new problem was encountered with nanosized material that small Si particles were aggregated to be larger one during Li+ insertion/extraction, and then pulverized again[3]. In this work, we have succeeded to improve the cy.le performance of nanosized Si particles by.sy.thesis of carbon coated silicon nanoparticle.
