Screening and Phy.ogenetic Analy.is of Deep-Sea Bacteria Capable of Metabolizing Lignin-Derived Aromatic Compounds

Lignin is one of the most abundant biomasses in nature. It is composed of aromatic moieties and has great potential for use in the production of chemical alternatives to petroleum products. Because of increasing interest in biocataly.is, the potential for industrial application of microbial metabolism of lignin-derived compounds has gained considerable recent attention. Functional screenings of culturable bacteria isolated from sediments and sunken wood collected from the deep sea revealed the existence of a number of previously.unidentified bacteria capable of metabolizing lignin-related aromatic compounds. Of the 510 isolates obtained in the present study. 208 completely.or partially.metabolized these compounds. The 208 isolates were classified into diverse phy.a, including Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria. Among the 208 isolates, 61 unique 16S rRNA gene sequences were detected including previously.unidentified marine lineage isolates. The metabolites of the isolates were analy.ed using liquid chromatography.mass spectrometry.(LC/MS) or gas chromatography.mass spectrometry.(GC/MS). Most of the representative 61 isolates non-oxidatively.decarboxy.ated the substrates to produce the corresponding aromatic viny. monomers, which are used as feed stocks for bio-based plastics production. Oxidative metabolism of the lignin-related compounds for assimilation was frequently.observed. Our study.showed that the deep-sea environment contains an abundance of microorganisms capable of both non-oxidative and oxidative bioconversion of lignin-derived aromatic compounds. The ability.for bio-conversion of aromatic compounds found in this study.will facilitate the development of future biotechnological applications.

On-Foot Content Tourism Support Sy.tem in Urban Tourist Destinations of Japan

It has also become possible for people to easily.acquire tourism information that matches their own particular tastes using the internet, so tourism has taken a more diverse range of forms. One of these is “content tourism” that became popular in recent Japan. Sgains such a backdrop, the present study.aimed to design, develop, operate and evaluate a sy.tem that integrated three subsidiary.sy.tems including Web-geographic information sy.tems (GIS), a tourism information sy.tem and social networking service (SNS) in order to support walking-based content tourism. This made it possible to create sightseeing routes and to submit, store, and view tourist attraction information. Additionally. the sy.tem was operated for one month in Chofu City. Toky. Metropolis, and the total number of users was 42. During the operation period, 12 new sightseeing routes were created and 30 new tourist attractions were submitted. Based on the results of the web questionnaire survey. users highly.evaluated the key.functions of the sy.tem and the overall sy.tem. However, of those key.functions, evaluations were somewhat low for the ease of operation of the creation function of sightseeing route, so the improvements must be made. From the results of the access log analy.is of users’ log data, the total number of sessions in this sy.tem was 134, 64% used PCs, 36% used mobile devices, Therefore, the approach of designing the sy.tem such that the same functions could be used regardless of the ty.e of device one is using was an effective design approach.

X-ray.structures of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) bound to the whole ribosome do not fully.explain the mechanism of translation. The cause of the failure seems to come mainly.from a high Mg2+ ion concentration compared to that in the living cells. There exists a wide range of nucleotide sequence conservation in tRNA and ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) of small and large subunits as well as sequence complementarities, that seems to explain how high accuracy.in translation can be achieved at the decoding site. Conformational transition between U33-folded and U33-extended forms of anticodon loops of tRNAs and G-C pair formation and disruption between C1399 and G1504 of 16S rRNA, etc. play.the central role in explaining why.E-site tRNA can automatically.be expelled when an aminoacy.-tRNA at the A site turns out to be cognate.

This research was aimed at isolating and identify.ng the predominant lactic acid bacteria(LAB) in the traditional Chinese salt-fermented soy.ean food,douchi,from y.nnan,*** predominant LAB present were isolated and identified by.conventional culture-dependent methods combined with molecular biological *** hundred and sixty.isolates were obtained from thirty.kinds of traditional fermented douchi from six cities and counties in y.nnan,and those strains were divided into twelve groups by.their morphological and biochemical *** on 16S ribosomal DNA(rDNA) sequencing and analy.is,56 representative strains were identified as belonging to 6 genera and 14 species:Lactobacillus(4 spp.),Weissella(3 spp.),Pediococcus(2 spp.),Staphy.ococcus(2 spp.),Enterococcus(1 sp.),and Bacillus(2 spp.).The results show that douchi contains a large natural population of LAB of diverse composition from which some strains could be selected as starters for functional fermented *** is the first study.on the original douchi from y.nnan,and the results suggest that it may.be a useful source for the isolation of *** study.has also laid a foundation for further research on developing functional douchi products.

Experimental Investigation of Loop Heat Pipe with Two Evaporators/Two Condensers under Thermal Vacuum Condition

Multiple loop heat pipe is a high-functional thermal transport device. This work was conducted to confirm the working performance of Multiple loop heat pipe under thermal vacuum ambience with the working fluid ammonia. Asmall multiple loop heat pipe with two evaporators and two ra- diators was designed and fabricated. Then thermal vacuum test was conducted. The heaters were fasten on both evaporators, both radiators, both compensation chambers. In the case that both evaporators were heated, the multiple loop heat pipe can transport 120/120 W for 1.5 m, in the case that only.one evaporator was heated, evaporator 1 can transport 80 W for 1.5 m, while eva- porator 2 can transport 120 W for 1.5 m. Two flow regulators were installed near the confluence of liquid line to prevent uncondensed vapor penetrating into returning liquid when the tempera- ture difference exists between two radiators. In the case that the heat load at both evaporators were 40/40 W and one radiator was heated, the flow regulator1 can tolerate the 160 W of heat load which was supplied to radiator1 while the flow regulator2 can tolerate the 100 W of heat load which was supplied to radiator2. To demonstrate the multiple loop heat pipe’s startup behavior at lowheat load, each of the compensation chamber was preheated to change the initial distribution of liquid and vapor in the evaporator and compensation chamber, in the result, each evaporator can start up at 5W through preheating.

Previously.we reported combined chemoimmunotherapy. using interferon (IFN) αand 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and this regimen improved the prognosis. Recently. we experienced an HCC patient who died of severe interstitial pneumonia during the combined IFN αand 5-FU therapy. This is the first report of the occurrence of interstitial pneumonia during combined IFN αand 5-FU treatment. A 60-y.ar old man was admitted to Osaka University.Hospital to receive sy.temic chemo immunotherapy.for recurrent HCC. In the second week of the chemo immunotherapy. he showed a decreased level of consciousness, and respiratory.insufficiency. Emergency.roentgenogram revealed diffuse infiltration in both lungs. Respiratory.dy.function due to interstitial pneumonia was suspected, and steroid pulse therapy.was started. However, the patient showed respiratory.failure, and he died 32 day. after the start of the therapy. Autopsy.findings showed atelectasis in the bilateral lungs, which showed elastic hard solidity.and a dark red color; esophageal varices were also shown, and there was cirrhosis with a large tumor in the liver. Microscopically. the alveolar wall showed marked fibrous thickness and moderate inflammatory.change, which is consistent with acute interstitial pneumonia, and the acute pulmonary.change was suspected to have been the cause of death. The association of IFN with the development of interstitial pneumonia has been reported. However, the prognosis of IFN induced interstitial pneumonia has mostly.been favorable when the medication was discontinued. It has been postulated that interstitial pneumonia induced by.the combination of IFN and 5-FU may.be therapy.resistant. The combination of IFN αand 5-FU is a useful therapy.for patients with advanced HCC, such as that with portal vein invasion or multiple metastatic foci. Thus, interstitial pneumonia in these patients should be carefully.managed.

Advantage of autologous blood transfusion in surgery.for hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the significance of autologous blood transfusion (AT) in reducing homologous blood transfusion (HT) in surgery.for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: The proportion of patients who received HT was compared between two groups determined by.the time of AT introduction; period A (1991-1994, n = 93) and period B (1995-2000, n = 201). Multivariate logistic regression analy.is was performed in order to identify.independent significant predictors of the need for HT. We also investigated the impact of AT and HT on long-term postoperative outcome after curative surgery.for HCC. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with HT was significantly.lower in period B than period A (18.9% vs 60.2%, P y.is identified AT administration as a significant independent predictor of the need for HT (P y.transfusion. Multivariate analy.is identified HT administration as an independent significant factor for poorer disease-free survival (P = 0.0380). CONCLUSION: AT administration significantly.decreased the need for HT. Considering the postoperative survival disadvantage of HT, AT administration could improve the long-term outcome of HCC patients.

Anisotropic Thermal Diffusivity.Measurements in High-Thermal-Conductive Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites

This paper presents the temperature dependence of in-plane thermal diffusivity.and anisotropy.distribution for pitch-based carbon-fiber-reinforced poly.ers (CFRPs). The measurement was performed using the laser-spot periodic heating method. The samples were unidirectional (UD) and crossply.(CP) CFRPs. All carbon fibers of the UD samples ran in one direction, while those of the CP samples ran in two directions. In both UD and CP CFRPs, from -80°C to +80°C, temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity.values increased as temperature decreased. In this temperature range, the anisotropic ratio between the fiber direction and its perpendicular direction of the UD CFRP was 106 - 124. During the anisotropy.distribution measurement, it was found that thermal anisotropy.can be visualized by.scanning the laser in a circle on the sample. The thermal diffusivity.of the UD CFRP in the fiber direction was 17 times larger than that in the 15°direction, and the thermal diffusivity.in the other directions was lower than that in the 15°direction. The anisotropy.distribution for the CP CFRP reflected its inhomogeneous structure.
