Enabling an Inorganic-Rich Interface via Cationic Surfactant for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

An anion-rich electric double layer(EDL)region is favorable for fabricating an inorganic-rich solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI)towards stable lithium metal anode in ester electrolyte.Herein,cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB),a cationic surfactant,is adopted to draw more anions into EDL by ionic interactions that shield the repelling force on anions during lithium plating.In situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy results combined with molecular dynamics simulations validate the enrichment of NO_(3)^(−)/FSI−anions in the EDL region due to the positively charged CTA^(+).In-depth analysis of SEI structure by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry results confirmed the formation of the inorganic-rich SEI,which helps improve the kinetics of Li^(+)transfer,lower the charge transfer activation energy,and homogenize Li deposition.As a result,the Li||Li symmetric cell in the designed electrolyte displays a prolongated cycling time from 500 to 1300 h compared to that in the blank electrolyte at 0.5 mA cm^(-2) with a capacity of 1 mAh cm^(-2).Moreover,Li||LiFePO_(4) and Li||LiCoO_(2) with a high cathode mass loading of>10 mg cm^(-2) can be stably cycled over 180 cycles.

Influence of Incomplete Soil Plugs on Bearing Capacities of Bucket Foundations in Clay

Due to the uneven seabed and heaving of soil during pumping,incomplete soil plugs may occur during the installation of bucket foundations,and the impacts on the bearing capacities of bucket foundations need to be evaluated.In this paper,the contact ratio(the ratio of the top diameter of the soil plug to the diameter of the bucket)and the soil plug ratio(the ratio of the soil heave height to the skirt height)are defined to describe the shape and size of the incomplete soil plug.Then,finite element models are established to investigate the bearing capacities of bucket foundations with incomplete soil plugs and the influences of the contact ratios,and the soil plug ratios on the bearing capacities are analyzed.The results show that the vertical bearing capacity of bucket foundations in homogeneous soil continuously improves with the increase of the contact ratio.However,in normally consolidated soil,the vertical bearing capacity barely changes when the contact ratio is smaller than 0.75,while the bearing capacity suddenly increases when the contact ratio increases to 1 due to the change of failure mode.The contact ratio hardly affects the horizontal bearing capacity of bucket foundations.Moreover,the moment bearing capacity improves with the increase of the contact ratio for small aspect ratios,but hardly varies with increasing contact ratio for aspect ratios larger than 0.5.Consequently,the reduction coefficient method is proposed based on this analysis to calculate the bearing capacities of bucket foundations considering the influence of incomplete soil plugs.The comparison results show that the proposed reduction coefficient method can be used to evaluate the influences of incomplete soil plug on the bearing capacities of bucket foundations.

Hemichorea in patients with temporal lobe infarcts: Two case reports

BACKGROUND Hemichorea and other hyperkinetic movement disorders are uncommon present-ations of stroke and are usually secondary to deep infarctions affecting the basal ganglia and thalamus.Therefore,temporal ischemic lesions causing hemichorea are rare.We report the cases of two patients with acute ischemic temporal lobe infarct strokes that presented as hemichorea.CASE SUMMARY Patient 1:An 82-year-old woman presented with a 1-mo history of involuntary movement of the left extremity,which was consistent with hemichorea.Her diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI)revealed an acute ischemic stroke that predominantly affected the right temporal cortex,and magnetic resonance angiography of the head showed significant stenosis of the right middle cerebral artery(MCA).Treatment with 2.5 mg of olanzapine per day was initiated.When she was discharged from the hospital,her symptoms appeared to have improved compared with those previously observed.Twenty-seven days after the first admission,she was readmitted due to acute ischemic stroke.Computed tomogra-phy perfusion showed marked hypoperfusion in the right MCA territory.An emergency transfemoral cerebral angiogram was performed and showed severe stenosis in the M1 segment of the right MCA.After percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was successfully performed,abnormal movements or other neuro-logic problems did not occur.Patient 2:A 76-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for a 7-d history of right-upper-sided involuntary movements.DWI showed an acute patchy ischemic stroke in the left temporal lobe without basal ganglia involvement.Subsequent diffusion tensor imaging confirmed fewer white matter fiber tracts on the left side than on the opposite side.Treatment with 2.5 mg of olanzapine per day improved his condition,and he was discharged.CONCLUSION When acute hemichorea suddenly appears,temporal cortical ischemic stroke should be considered a possible diagnosis.In addition,hemichorea may be a sign of impending cerebral infarction with MCA stenosis.

Low-Rank Optimal Transport for Robust Domain Adaptation

When encountering the distribution shift between the source(training) and target(test) domains, domain adaptation attempts to adjust the classifiers to be capable of dealing with different domains. Previous domain adaptation research has achieved a lot of success both in theory and practice under the assumption that all the examples in the source domain are welllabeled and of high quality. However, the methods consistently lose robustness in noisy settings where data from the source domain have corrupted labels or features which is common in reality. Therefore, robust domain adaptation has been introduced to deal with such problems. In this paper, we attempt to solve two interrelated problems with robust domain adaptation:distribution shift across domains and sample noises of the source domain. To disentangle these challenges, an optimal transport approach with low-rank constraints is applied to guide the domain adaptation model training process to avoid noisy information influence. For the domain shift problem, the optimal transport mechanism can learn the joint data representations between the source and target domains using a measurement of discrepancy and preserve the discriminative information. The rank constraint on the transport matrix can help recover the corrupted subspace structures and eliminate the noise to some extent when dealing with corrupted source data. The solution to this relaxed and regularized optimal transport framework is a convex optimization problem that can be solved using the Augmented Lagrange Multiplier method, whose convergence can be mathematically proved. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Synthesis and characterization of iron clusters with an icosahedral [Fe@Fe12]16+ Core

Iron-metal clusters are crucial in a variety of critical biological and material systems,including metalloenzymes,catalysts,and magnetic storage devices.However,a synthetic high-nuclear iron cluster has been absent due to the extreme difficulty in stabilizing species with direct iron-iron bonding.In this work,we have synthesized,crystallized,and characterized a（Tp*）4W4S12(Fe@Fe12) cluster(Tp*=tris（3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl）borate（1-）),which features a rare trideca-nuclear,icosahedral[Fe@Fe12] cluster core with direct multicenter iron-iron bonding between the interstitial iron（Fei） and peripheral irons（Fep）,as well as Fep…Fepferromagnetic coupling.Quantum chemistry studies reveal that the stability of the cluster arises from the 18-electron shell-closing of the [Fe@Fe12]16+core,assisted by its bonding interactions with the peripheral tridentate [（Tp*）WS3]4-ligands which possess both S→Fe donation and spin-polarized Fe-Wσ bonds.The ground-state electron spin is theoretically predicted to be S=32/2 for the cluster.The existence of low oxidation-state（OS～+1.23） iron in this compound may find interesting applications in magnetic storage,spintronics,redox chemistry,and cluster catalysis.

Structural engineering of BaWO_(4)/CsPbX_(3)/CsPb_(2)X_(5)(X=Cl,Br,I)heterostructures towards ultrastable and tunable photoluminescence

Construction of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals(LHP NCs)heterostructures is essential to obtain highly stable photoluminescence and expand their applications.Herein,a novel self-assembly strategy combining with a solvent-free thermal-assisted synthesis and a water-triggered reaction is developed to subsequently grow BaWO_(4)/CsPbX_(3)/CsPb_(2)X_(5)(X=Cl,Br,I)heterostructures at low nucleation temperature with high crystallinity.The as-obtained ternary BaWO_(4)/CsPbX_(3)/CsPb_(2)X_(5)(X=Cl,Br,I)heterostructures exhibit remarkably enhanced panchromatic emission and ultrastable luminescence ascribing to the low-defect growth based on lattice matching.Stable white light-emitting diodes(WLEDs)have been constructed with a high correlated color temperature(CCT)of 7225 K and luminous efficiency of 74.4 lm·W-1.Ln^(3+)-doped BaWO_(4)/CsPbX_(3)/CsPb_(2)X_(5)(Ln^(3+)=Eu^(3+),Tb^(3+),Dy^(3+),Sm^(3+),Yb^(3+)/Er^(3+))nanocomposites are further designed with excitation-dependent photoluminescence and thermochromic properties,making them excellent candidates for high-level anti-counterfeiting and encryption.This work offers a green and universal approach in assembling CsPbX_(3)(X=Cl,Br,I)on lattice-matched tungstate with adjustable panchromatic emission for versatile optical applications.

Realizing high initial Coulombic efficiency in manganese-based layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries via P2/O'3 biphasic structure optimization

Abstract Mn-based layered oxides are among the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries owing to the advantages of abundance,environmenta friendliness,low cost and high specific capacity.P2 and O'3 are two representative structures of Mn-based layered oxides.However,the P2 structure containing insufficien Na generally exhibits low initial charge capacity,while O'3structure with sufficient Na delivers high initial charge capacity but poor cycle stability.This study prepared a multitude of NaxMnO2（x=0.7,0.8,0.9） cathode materials with varying P2/O'3 ratios and further investigated their electrochemical performances.The optimized Na0.8MnO2comprising 69.9 wt%O'3 and 30.1 wt% P2 phase,exhibited relatively balanced specific capacity,Coulombic efficiency and cycle stability.Specifically,it achieved a high specific capacity of 128.9 mAh·g-1with an initia Coulombic efficiency of 98.2%in half-cell configuration The Na0.8MnO2// hard carbon full cell also achieved a high specific capacity of 126.7 mAh·g-1with an initia Coulombic efficiency of 98.9%.Moreover,the capacity fading mechanism was revealed by combining in-situ and ex-situ X-ray diffraction.The findings of this study provide theoretical guidance for further modification design of Mnbased layered cathodes.

Bio-inspired macrostructure array(MAA,size:submillimeter to millimeter scale)materials with special wettability(MAAMs-SW)have attracted significant research attention due to their outstanding performance in many applications,including oil repellency,liquid/droplet manipulation,anti-icing,heat transfer,water collection,and oil–water separation.In this review,we focus on recent developments in the theory,design,fabrication,and application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We first review the history of the basic theory of special wettability and discuss representative structures and corresponding functions of some biological surfaces,thus setting the stage for the design and fabrication of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We then summarize the fabrication methods of special wetting MAAs in terms of three categories:additive manufacturing,subtractive manufacturing,and formative manufacturing,as well as their diverse functional applications,providing insights into the development of these MAAMs-SW.Finally,the challenges and directions of future research on bio-inspired MAAMs-SW are briefy addressed.Worldwide efforts,progress,and breakthroughs from surface engineering to functional applications elaborated herein will promote the practical application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.

Physical Layer Encryption of OFDM-PON Based on Quantum Noise Stream Cipher with Polar Code

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network(OFDM-PON) has superior anti-dispersion property to operate in the C-band of fiber for increased optical power budget. However,the downlink broadcast exposes the physical layer vulnerable to the threat of illegal eavesdropping. Quantum noise stream cipher(QNSC) is a classic physical layer encryption method and well compatible with the OFDM-PON. Meanwhile, it is indispensable to exploit forward error correction(FEC) to control errors in data transmission. However, when QNSC and FEC are jointly coded, the redundant information becomes heavier and thus the code rate of the transmitted signal will be largely reduced. In this work, we propose a physical layer encryption scheme based on polar-code-assisted QNSC. In order to improve the code rate and security of the transmitted signal, we exploit chaotic sequences to yield the redundant bits and utilize the redundant information of the polar code to generate the higher-order encrypted signal in the QNSC scheme with the operation of the interleaver.We experimentally demonstrate the encrypted 16/64-QAM, 16/256-QAM, 16/1024-QAM, 16/4096-QAM QNSC signals transmitted over 30-km standard single mode fiber. For the transmitted 16/4096-QAM QNSC signal, compared with the conventional QNSC method, the proposed method increases the code rate from 0.1 to 0.32 with enhanced security.

RebL1 is required for macronuclear structure stability and gametogenesis in Tetrahymena thermophila

Histone modification and nucleosome assembly play important roles in chromatin-related processes.Histone chaperones form different complexes and coordinate histone transportation and assembly.Various histone chaperone complexes have been identified in different organisms.The ciliate protozoa(ciliates)have various chromatin structures and different nuclear morphology.However,histone chaperone components and functions of different subunits remain unclear in ciliates.Tet-rahymema thermophila contains a transcriptionally active macronucleus(MAC)and a transcriptionally inactive micronu-cleus(MIC)which exhibit multiple replication and various chromatin remodeling progresses during vegetative growth and sexual developmental stages.Here,we found histone chaperone RebL1 not only localized evenly in the transcriptionally active MAC but also dynamically changed in the MIC during vegetative growth and sexual developmental stages.REBL1 knockdown inhibited cellular proliferation.The macronuclear morphology became bigger in growing mutants.The abnormal macronuclear structure also occurred in the starvation stage.Furthermore,micronuclear meiosis was disturbed during sexual development,leading to a failure to generate new gametic nuclei.RebL1 potentially interacted with various factors involved in histone-modifying complexes and chromatin remodeling complexes in different developmental stages.REBL1 knockdown affected expression levels of the genes involved in chromatin organization and transcription.Taken together,RebL1 plays a vital role in maintaining macronuclear structure stability and gametogenesis in T.thermophila.
