To better characterize the properties of surface-initiated polymers, simultaneous bulk-and surface-initiated polymerizations are usually carried out by assuming that the properties of the surface-initiated polymers resemble those of the bulk-initiated polymers. Through a Monte Carlo simulation using a heterogeneous stochastic reaction model, it was discovered that the bulk-initiated polymers exhibit a higher molecular weight and a lower dispersity than the corresponding surface-initiated polymers, which indicates that the equivalent assumption is invalid. Furthermore, the molecular weight distributions of the two types of polymers are also different, suggesting different polymerization mechanisms. The results can be simply explained by the heterogeneous distributions of reactants in the system. This study is helpful to better understand surface-initiated polymerization.

Various functional groups have been suggested to play essential roles on biomineralization of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in natural system. 2D and 3D models of regularly arranged functional groups have been established to investigate their effect on CaCO3 crystallization. This mini-review summarizes the recent progress and the future development is prospected.

Silk fibroin （SF） from the Bombyx mori silkworm exhibits attractive potential applications as biomechanical materials, due to its unique mechanical and biological properties. This review outlines the structure and properties of SF, including of its biocompatibility and biodegradability. It highlights recent researches on the fabrication of various SF-based composites scaffolds that are promising for tissue engineering applications, and discusses synthetic methods of various SF-based composites scaffolds and valuable approaches for controlling cell behaviors to promote the tissue repair. The function of extracellular matrices and their interaction with cells are also reviewed here.

Sulfur dioxide(SO) derivatives play critical roles in various biological processes. Therefore, effective methods for monitoring SO are of vital importance in bisulfite/sulfite biology.[1-3] In this study, a two photon imaging probe(CQ-SO) for detecting SO derivatives was designed and constructed, based on the chromenoquinoline(CQ) fluorophore and a β-chlorovinyl aldehyde sensing moiety. The two-photon properties of chromenoquinoline derivatives were revealed in this study for the first time. This study enriched the biological application range of CQ derivatives and also provided a new choice for the development of TP dyes. In particular, the CQ-SO probe exhibited a fast response time(about 5 s), low detection limit(16 nM) and ultrahigh specificity towards SO derivatives. Furthermore, the probe was successfully applied to the highly specific TP bioimaging of SO derivatives in living cells and zebrafish.

Fluorescent probes are powerful tools for biosensing and bioimaging due to their high sensitivity, specificity, rapid response and technical simplicity. Recently, researchers have made remarkable progress in developing fluorescent probes that various subcellular organelles.[1] Among them, the mitochondria are the structure of energy production in cells, and are the main place for cells to perform aerobic respiration. Currently, the mitochondria-targeting fluorescent probes are mainly designed by utilizing a high membrane potential in the mitochondria, and are localized by electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the lysosomes are the digestion workshop and the corresponding lysosome localization achieve by the acidic microenvironment. However, positioning using the microenvironment does not allow for long-term positioning because it changes the microenvironment of the subcellular organelles and makes them malfunction.[2] Herein, we designed a series of probes that did not alter their microenvironment and explored the effect of substituents on mitochondria and lysosome colocalization.

Cu-N Doped Carbon Dots for NIR-Mediated Cancer Therapy

Photoluminescent carbon dots（CDs）, an emerging fluorescent carbonaceous nanomaterial, due to their unique optical properties coupled with water-soluble, low toxicity and biocompatibility, has led to numerous possible applications in sensing, bioimaging, optoelectronic devices and metal ion detection. In this paper, we synthesis the Cu–N doping carbon dots（Cu-CDs） through a one-step hydrothermal method. The photochemical structure were confirmed by UV-vis, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Furthermore, MTT assay was performed to further verify the biocompatibility and the photoinduced B16 cell-killing efficacy of the Cu-CDs in vitro. Further irradiation of Cu-CDs with the NIR laser results in the generation of heat and ROS, and consequently kills the cells. The NIR-mediated multifunctional therapy agent of the Cu-CDs was confirmed for cancer therapy with cells imaging and synergistic photodynamic/photothermal effect.

The development of near-infrared（NIR） fluorescent probe（650-900 nm） has gained increasing attention over the last few decades because of their potential applications in several important fields such as sensing and bioimaging. Apoptosis is important intracellular processes that maintain organism homeostasis and promote survival. It has been found that the variations of pH was commonly accompanied with apoptosis.[1-2] In this study, we develop a dual mode ratio fluorescent probe for the quantitative measurement of mitochondrial pH changes in autophagy in HeLa cells. We demonstrate that the average mitochondria pH of HeLa cells observed upon CCCP-induced 5 h was determined to be 5.6 ± 0.1（n = 6 cells）, which indicated that the pH gradually decreases by CCCP-induced apoptosis.
