Different efficiency toward the biomimetic aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in microchannel and bubble column reactors: Hydrodynamic characteristics and gas–liquid mass transfer

The selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde has attracted considerable attention because benzaldehyde is a high value-added product. The rate of this typical gas–liquid reaction is significantly affected by mass transfer. In this study, CoTPP-mediated(CoTPP: cobalt(II) mesotetraphenylporphyrin) selective benzyl alcohol oxidation with oxygen was conducted in a membrane microchannel(MMC) reactor and a bubble column(BC) reactor, respectively. We observed that 83% benzyl alcohol was converted within 6.5 min in the MMC reactor, but only less than 10% benzyl alcohol was converted in the BC reactor. Hydrodynamic characteristics and gas–liquid mass transfer performances were compared for the MMC and BC reactors. The MMC reactor was assumed to be a plug flow reactor,and the dimensionless variance was 0.29. Compared to the BC reactor, the gas–liquid mass transfer was intensified significantly in MMC reactor. It could be ascribed to the high gas holdup(2.9 times higher than that of BC reactor), liquid film mass transfer coefficient(8.2 times higher than that of BC reactor), and mass transfer coefficient per unit interfacial area(3.8 times higher than that of BC reactor). Moreover,the Hatta number for the MMC reactor reached up to 0.61, which was about 15 times higher than that of the BC reactor. The computational fluid dynamics calculations for mass fractions in both liquid and gas phases were consistent with the experimental data.

Laparoscopic treatment of a calcium fluorophosphate stone within a seminal vesicle cyst

Stones in the seminal vesicles are extremely rare. We present a 62-year-old patient with a stone within a seminal vesicle cyst, who was cured by laparoscopic treatment. The operative time was 80 rnin, and the estimated blood loss was 90 mL. Scanning electron microscope examination of the stone showed a compact crystal image externally and sparse spherical crystal structure in kernel. Composition of the stone was calcium fluorophosphate on X-ray diffractometer. The follow-up time was 15 months with no recurrence of cyst or stone. To our knowledge, this case is the first to describe laparoscopic removal of a stone within a seminal vesicle cyst, and the first to describe calcium fluorophosphate as the composition of seminal vesicle stones. （Asian JAndro12008 Mar; 10： 337-340）

Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence of gold nanoparticle/graphene quantum dots for detection of Cr^(3+)ions

Graphene quantum dots(GQDs),fascinating semiconductors with stable photoluminescence(PL),have important potential applications in the fields of biology,medicine,and new semiconductor devices.However,it is still challenging to overcome the weak PL intensity.Here,we report a strategy for selective resonance enhancement of GQD fluorescence using gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)as plasmas.Interestingly,the addition of low concentration AuNP makes AuNP/GQDs exhibit significant fluorescence enhancement of 2.67 times in the visible range.The addition of high concentration AuNP leads to the formation of an excitation peak at 421 nm and selectively enhances certain radiation modes.We concluded that the main reason for the selective enhancement of PL intensity in high concentration AuNP is the transfer of generous hot electrons at high energy states from AuNP to GQD and relaxation to the ground state.The electron resonance of low concentration AuNP transfers to GQD and relaxes to lower energy levels,exhibiting an overall enhancement of PL intensity.We apply it for detection of the heavy metal ion Cr^(3+),and verify that it has a correlation coefficient of 97.36%.We believe AuNP/GQDs can be considered excellent candidates for heavy metal detection and high fluorescence bio-imaging.

Background:Diagnoses of Skin diseases are frequently delayed in China due to lack of dermatologists.A deep learning-based diagnosis supporting system can facilitate pre-screening patients to prioritize dermatologists’efforts.We aimed to evaluate the classification sensitivity and specificity of deep learning models to classify skin tumors and psoriasis for Chinese population with a modest number of dermoscopic images.Methods:We developed a convolutional neural network(CNN)based on two datasets from a consecutive series of patients who underwent the dermoscopy in the clinic of the Department of Dermatology,Peking Union Medical College Hospital,between 2016 and 2018,prospectively.In order to evaluate the feasibility of the algorithm,we used two datasets.Dataset I consisted of 7192 dermoscopic images for a multi-class model to differentiate three most common skin tumors and other diseases.Dataset II consisted of 3115 dermoscopic images for a two-class model to classify psoriasis from other inflammatory diseases.We compared the performance of CNN with 164 dermatologists in a reader study with 130 dermoscopic images.The experts’consensus was used as the reference standard except for the cases of basal cell carcinoma(BCC),which were all confirmed by histopathology.Results:The accuracies of multi-class and two-class models were 81.49%±0.88%and 77.02%±1.81%,respectively.In the reader study,for the multi-class tasks,the diagnosis sensitivity and specificity of 164 dermatologists were 0.770 and 0.962 for BCC,0.807 and 0.897 for melanocytic nevus,0.624 and 0.976 for seborrheic keratosis,0.939 and 0.875 for the"others"group,respectively;the diagnosis sensitivity and specificity of multi-class CNN were 0.800 and 1.000 for BCC,0.800 and 0.840 for melanocytic nevus,0.850 and 0.940 for seborrheic keratosis,0.750 and 0.940 for the"others"group,respectively.For the two-class tasks,the sensitivity and specificity of dermatologists and CNN for classifying psoriasis were 0.872 and 0.838,1.000 and 0.605,respectively.Both the dermatolo

Preparation and Oxidation Resistance of BN-MgAlON Composites by Hot-pressing Sintering

BN-MgA1ON composites were prepared by hot-pressing sintering under nitrogen atmosphere with BN-Mg- A1ON composite powders as raw material and Y2 O3 as sintering additive. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the oxi- dation resistance of BN-MgAION composites was investigated and the dynamics of oxidation process was also ana- lyzed. The oxidation process and the micro-morphology of the samples before and after oxidation were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The dynamics of oxidation resistance of the BN-MgA1ON composites was investigated via the analysis of the constant temperature oxidation mass gain curves. The results show that the main components of the material are MgA1ON, Sialon, BN and CaYAI3 07 at 1 650--1750 ＊C, and the content of CaYA1307 decreases as the sintering temperature increases. The BN-MgA1ON composites prepared at 1750 ℃ is uniform and compact with the balanced distributions of A1, Mg, O, and N. The oxidation process of BN- MgA1ON composites in air mainly consists of MgAION, Sialon and BN oxidation. The section after being oxidized at 1000--1300 ℃ involves three layers, namely, the outer layer, the middle layer and the inner layer. The oxidation process follows the parabola model. The apparent activation energy of the oxidation process is 2.13 × 10 5 J/mol and the frequency factor is 4.66 × 10 6.

Various exciton species in transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs),such as neutral excitons,trions(charged excitons),dark excitons,and biexcitons,have been individually discovered with distinct light-matter interactions.In terms of valley-spin locked band structures and electron-hole configurations,these exciton species demonstrate flexible control of emission light with degrees of freedom(DOFs)such as intensity,polarization,frequency,and dynamics.However,it remains elusive to fully manipulate different exciton species on demand for practical photonic applications.Here,we investigate the contrasting light-matter interactions to control multiple DOFs of emission light in a hybrid monolayer WSe2-Ag nanowire(NW)structure by taking advantage of various exciton species.These excitons,including trions,dark excitons,and biexcitons,are found to couple independently with propagating surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)of Ag NW in quite different ways,thanks to the orientations of transition dipoles.Consistent with the simulations,the dark excitons and dark trions show extremely high coupling efficiency with SPPs,while the trions demonstrate directional chiral-coupling features.This study presents a crucial step towards the ultimate goal of exploiting the comprehensive spectrum of TMD excitons for optical information processing and quantum optics.

Characteristics of Pattern Visual Evoked Potential in Two Eyes with Varying Visual Acuity in One Eye and Forensic Application

In this study, we aimed to study the pattern visual evoked potentials （P-VEPs） in two eyes with varying visual acuity in one eye and to provide an objective estimation of visual acuity by comparing P-VEPs in one and two eyes. Thirty subjects were chosen, who had one eye with an acuity of 5.0, 4.85, 4.6, 4.0, or scieropia and obstructed vision and the other eye with an acuity of 5.0, respectively. P-VEPs were detected under the large grating stimuli at 3x4 spatial frequency, moderate grating stimuli （12× 16 spatial frequency） and small grating stimuli （48×64 spatial frequency）. Under large grating stimuli, there was no significant difference in P100 peak latency between the groups, nor was there a significant difference between the amplitude of two eyes and the amplitude of one normal-vision eye. Under moderate and small grating stimuli, there was a significant difference in P100 peak latency between the group with both eyes having an acuity of 5.0 and the group with visual acuity below 4.0 in one eye. There was a significant difference in P100 amplitude between the group with visual acuity of 5.0 in both eyes and the group with one normal-vision eye. There was no significant difference in the amplitude of two eyes and the amplitude of one normal-vision eye between any other two groups. In forensic identification, characteristics and variability of P-VEPs in one and two eyes can be used to identify malingering or decline in visual acuity.

Objective:The purpose of the research was to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Shenkang injection combined with Western medicine in treating chronic glomerulonephritis.Methods:Randomized controlled trials of Shenkang Injection combined with Western medicine in treating CGN were obtained from 8 Science databases including China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),China Biomedical Database(SinMed),Weipu Database(VIP),Wanfang Database(Wanfang),PubMed,The Cochrane Library,Embase,Web of Science from establishment to June 2022.Two researchers screened literature and extracted useful data according to inclusion and exclusion criteria,and used RevMan 5.3 and STATA SE 14.0 software to perform meta-analysis.Results:1,214 patients were included in 15 studies,with 607 in treatment group and 607 in control group.The results of meta-analysis showed that the treatment group could improve the clinical effective rate[RR=1.33,95%CI(1.25,1.40),P<0.00001],reduce serum creatinine[MD=-31.28,95%CI(-42.90,-19.66),P<0.00001],blood urea nitrogen[MD=-2.26,95%CI(-3.08,-1.44),P<0.00001],24-hour urine protein quantification[MD=-0.37,95%CI(-0.49,-0.25),P<0.00001],tumor necrosis factor-α[MD=-7.93,95%CI(-10.56,-5.30),P<0.00001],systolic blood pressure[MD=-10.81,95%CI(-13.66,-7.96),P<0.00001]and diastolic blood pressure[MD=-7.36,95%CI(-9.34,-5.38),P<0.00001].Conclusion:Shenkang injection combined with Western medicine can enhance the clinical effective rate of CGN and reduce the levels of serum creatinine,blood urea nitrogen,24-hour urine protein quantification,tumor necrosis factor-α,systolic blood and diastolic blood pressure.However,due to the low quality of literature,the conclusion still needs to be supported by more multi-center,large-sample studies with rigorous design and standardized implementation.

Change of SPARC expression after chemotherapy in gastric cancer

Objective:The expression of tumor biomarkers may change after chemotherapy. However, whether secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine(SPARC) expression changes after chemotherapy in gastric cancer(GC) is unclear. This study investigated the influence of chemotherapy on SPARC expression in GC.Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze SPARC expression in 132 GC cases(including 54 cases with preoperative chemotherapy and 78 cases without preoperative chemotherapy). SPARC expression of postoperative specimens with and without preoperative chemotherapy was assessed to analyze the influence of chemotherapy on SPARC expression.Results: SPARC was highly expressed in GC compared with the desmoplastic stroma surrounding tumor cells and noncancerous tissues. High SPARC expression was correlated with invasion depth, lymph node, and TNM stage. After chemotherapy, a lower proportion of high SPARC expression was observed in patients with preoperative chemotherapy than in the controls. For 54 patients with preoperative chemotherapy, gross type, histology, depth of invasion, lymph node, TNM stage, and SPARC expression were related to overall survival. Further multivariate analysis showed that lymph node, histology, and SPARC expression after chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors.Conclusion: SPARC expression may change after chemotherapy in GC. SPARC expression should be reassessed for patients with GC after chemotherapy.

Base editor-mediated large-scale screening of functional mutations in bacteria for industrial phenotypes

Base editing,the targeted introduction of point mutations into cellular DNA,holds promise for improving genome-scale functional genome screening to single-nucleotide resolution.Current efforts in prokaryotes,however,remain confined to loss-of-function screens using the premature stop codons-mediated gene inactivation library,which falls far short of fully releasing the potential of base editors.Here,we developed a base editor-mediated functional single nucleotide variant screening pipeline in Escherichia coli.We constructed a library with 31,123 sgRNAs targeting 462 stress response-related genes in E.coli,and screened for adaptive mutations under isobutanol and furfural selective conditions.Guided by the screening results,we successfully identified several known and novel functional mutations.Our pipeline might be expanded to the optimization of other phenotypes or the strain engineering in other microorganisms.
