In this work,the effects of Co doping on the magnetostructural coupling transformation of Ni_(50-x)Co_(x)Mn_(50-y)Ti_(y)(x=0-15,y=12.5-15)Heusler alloys were systematically investigated through the first-princi-ples calculations and experimental *** cal-culation result indicates that the doped Co atoms prefer to occupy the Ni *** Co atoms tend to flock together in terms of the lowest energy *** the formation energy of the austenite is higher than that of the martensite,the alloys will undergo martensitic transfor-mation for the Ni_(50-x)Co_(x)Mn_(37.5)Ti_(12.5)alloys(x=0-12.5).The magnetostructural coupling point of Ni_(50-x)Co_(x)Mn_(37.5)Ti_(12.5)alloys is predicted in the vicinity of x=*** on the computational composition Ni_(37.5)Co_(12.5)Mn_(37.5)Ti_(12.5),the Ni_(36)Co_(14)Mn_(36)Ti_(14)alloy with magnetostructural coupling near room temperature was experimentally developed by simultaneously increasing the Ti and Co *** largest magnetization change(ΔM)and magnetic entropy changes(ΔS_(m))obtained under magnetic field of 5 T for the martensitic transformation in the Ni_(36)Co_(14)Mn_(36)Ti_(14) alloy are about 87.6 A·m^(2)·kg^(-1)and 21 J·kg^(-1)·K^(-1),*** fracture strength and strain for non-textured polycrystalline Ni_(36)Co_(14)Mn_(36)Ti_(14)alloy reach 953 MPa and 12.3%,*** results show that the alloy not only possesses a large magne-tocaloric effect but also has excellent mechanical *** addition,the 6 M modulated martensite is evidenced in the Ni-Co-Mn-Ti alloys via transmission electron microscopy technique.

Boron shielding design for neutron and gamma detectors of a pulsed neutron tool

Shielding materials are critical for downhole pulsed neutron tool design because they directly influence the accuracy of formation measurements.A well-designed shield configuration ensures that the response of the tool is maximally representative of the formation without being affected by the tool and borehole *** study investigated the effects of boron-containing materials on neutron and gamma detectors based on a newly designed logging-while-drilling tool that is currently undergoing *** the boron content increased,the ability to absorb thermal neutrons increased *** simulation,it was proven that boron carbide(B_(4)C)can be used as an effective boron shielding material for thermal neutrons,and is therefore employed in this *** shield against thermal neutrons migrating from the mud pipes,the optimal shielding thicknesses for the near-and far-neutron detectors were determined to be 5 and 4 *** a porosity of 25 p.u.,near-neutron sensitivity exhibited a 5.6%***,to shield the capture gamma generated by thermal neutrons once they enter the tool from the mud pipe and formation,internal and external shields for the gamma detector were *** results show that the internal shield requires a boron content of 75%,whereas the external shield has a thickness of 14.2 mm thickness and a boron content of 25%to minimize the tool effect.

ZmADT2 regulates maize kernel development via the auxin signaling pathway

Arogenate dehydratase (ADT) catalyzes the final step in phenylalanine synthesis and is crucial for plant development and metabolism. Previously, we demonstrated that the ADT/prephenate dehydratase ZmADT2 is essential for maize resistance to Ustilago maydis and for overall plant development. In this study, we explored the role of ZmADT2 in maize kernel development. The mmsu mutant, a dysfunctional ZmADT2 variant, exhibits delayed embryo and endosperm development, along with deficiencies in carbohydrate and protein storage. Transcriptome analysis revealed differential expression of many kernel compartment-specific genes between mmsu and wild-type (WT) kernels, with impaired nutrient accumulation and auxin signaling pathway in the mmsu endosperm. Compared to WT, ZmADT2 mutation led to reduced auxin levels and smaller endosperm cell size. Exogenous auxin rescued the small kernel phenotype of mmsu. Additionally, auxin distribution was reduced in the basal endosperm transfer layer (BETL), causing defects in its development and function, including reduced transfer cell elongation, cell wall ingrowth and nutrient uptake. These findings suggest that ZmADT2 mediated mediates an auxin signaling pathway that is essential for maize kernel development. © 2024 Crop Science Society of China and Institute of Crop Science, CAAS

van der Waals(vdW)heterostructures constructed by lowdimensional(0D,1D,and 2D)materials are emerging as one of the most appealing systems in next-generation flexible ***,hand-stacked vdW-type photodetectors are not compatible with large-areaarray fabrication and show unimpressive performance in self-powered ***,vertical 1D GaN nanorods arrays(NRAs)/2D MoS_(2)/PEDOT:PSS in wafer scale have been proposed for self-powered flexible photodetectors arrays *** as-integrated device without external bias under weak UV illumination exhibits a competitive responsivity of 1.47 A W^(−1)and a high detectivity of 1.2×10^(11)Jones,as well as a fast response speed of 54/71μs,thanks to the strong light absorption of GaN NRAs and the efficient photogenerated carrier separation in type-II ***,the strain-tunable photodetection performances of device have been ***,the device at−0.78%strain and zero bias reveals a significantly enhanced photoresponse with a responsivity of 2.47 A W^(−1),a detectivity of 2.6×10^(11)Jones,and response times of 40/45μs,which are superior to the state-of-the-art self-powered flexible *** work presents a valuable avenue to prepare tunable vdWs heterostructures for self-powered flexible photodetection,which performs well in flexible sensors.

Characterization of size-resolved aerosol hygroscopicity and liquid water content in Nanjing of the Yangtze River Delta

Aerosol hygroscopicity and liquid water content(ALWC)have important influences on the environmental and climate effect of *** this study,we measured the hygroscopic growth factors(GF)of particles with dry diameters of 40,80,150,and 200 nm during the wintertime in *** the GF-derived hygroscopicity parameter(κ_(gf))and ALWC increased with particle size,but displayed differing diurnal variations,withκ_(gf)peaking around the midday,while ALWC peaking in the early ***,ammonium and oxygenated organic aerosols(OOA)were found as the chemical components mostly strongly correlated with ALWC.A closure study suggests that during midday photo-oxidation and nighttime high ALWC periods,theκof organic aerosols(κ_(org))was underestimated when using previous ***,we re-constructed parameterizations forκ_(org)and the oxidation level of organics for these periods,which indicates a higher hygroscopicity of photochemically formed OOA than the aqueous OOA,yet both being much higher than the generally assumed OOA ***,in a typical high ALWC episode,concurrently increased ALWC,nitrate,OOA as well as aerosol surface area and mass concentrations were observed under elevated ambient *** strongly indicates a coupled effect that the hygroscopic secondary aerosols,in particular nitratewith strong hygroscopicity,led to large increase in ALWC,which in turn synergistically boosted nitrate and OOA formation by heterogeneous/aqueous *** interaction may represent an important mechanism contributing to enhanced formation of secondary aerosols and rapid growth of fine particulate matter under relatively high RH conditions.

A Multi-faceted View of the X-Ray Spectral Variability in Seyfert Galaxy Ark 120

Utilizing a range of techniques including multi-band light curves,softness ratio analysis,structure functions,rms spectra,cross-correlation functions,and ratios of spectra from different intervals,we present a comprehensive study of the complex X-ray spectral variability in Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 120,through re-analyzing its six XMM-Newton observations taken between 2003 and *** find a clear“softer-when-brighter”trend in the 2–10 ke V power-law component over long timescales,with this trend being timescale dependent,as it is much weaker on shorter timescales,similar to that previously detected in NGC ***,a rare“harder-when-brighter”trend is observed during one exposure,indicating dynamic changes in the spectral variability behavior of the power-law *** exceptional exposure,with the spectral variability indeed marked by a power-law pivoting at an unusually low energy of～2 ke V,suggests intricate variations in the thermal Comptonization processes within the ***,when the data below 2 ke V are included,we identify that the soft excess component adds significant complexity to the spectral variability,such as evidenced by a transition from“harder-when-brighter”to“softer-when-brighter”during another single *** extra complexity arises because the variability of the soft excess sometimes follows and sometimes does not follow the changes in the power-law *** findings underscore the necessity of applying multiple analytic techniques to fully capture the multifaceted spectral variability of AGNs.

A robust statistical prediction model for late-summer heavy precipitation days in North China

Recently,heavy precipitation(HP)events have occurred frequently in North China(NC),causing devastating economic losses and human ***,the short-term climate prediction of HP is quite *** year-to-year increment(DY)method and sliding correlations,we developed a robust seasonal prediction model for late-summer HP days(HPDs)in NC during 1982–2022,utilizing three independent predictors—February sea surface temperature(SST)in the Indian Ocean(SST_IO),February snow depth over North Asia(SDE_NA),and May melted snow depth in NC(MSDE_NC).The SST_IO anomalies affect NC's precipitation through the Pacific-Japan *** SDE_NA anomalies are associated with East Asian anomalous anticyclone by southeastern propagation of Rossby wave at *** MSDE_NC anomalies are followed by vertical motion and moisture anomalies in situ and thereby cause precipitation *** prediction model can well simulate the variations of the HPDs,with a correlation coefficient(CC)of 0.81(0.65)between the observed and predicted HPDs_DY(HPDs_anomaly).The percentage with the same sign for 15 extreme HPDs_anomaly years(PSSE)is 100%.Moreover,in the cross-validation test during 1982–2022,the PSSE for HPDs_anomaly is as high as 100%,along with a low rootmean-square error of *** independent hindcasts during 2013–2022,the CC between the observed and predicted HPDs_DY(HPDs_anomaly)is 0.93(0.83),together with high Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(0.82)and agreement index(0.89).Specifically,the predictions are broadly consistent with the observations for 2015,2016,2017,2021,and 2022,reflecting excellent performance of this prediction model of HPDs in NC.

Positive effect of Mo on mechanical properties of a Ni-42W-10Co-xMo medium heavy alloy

In this study,a novel Ni-W-Co-Mo medium heavy alloy(MHA)was designed to improve its mechanical strength via Mo *** the Ni-42W-10Co-x Mo alloy series,where x represents the weight percent of Mo and varies between 0,1,2,5,and 10,the microstructure transitions from a dendritic structure to a hypo-eutectic structure as the Mo content increases from 0 to 5wt.%.Moreover,as the Mo content increases from 0 to 10wt.%,the distribution of theμ-phase shifts from being individually dispersed to forming aggregates,and its volume fraction rises from 0.5%to 7.9%.Notably,theμ-phase evolves into an eutectic microstructure,which helps in minimizing the segregation of *** change is accompanied by a substantial enhancement in mechanical properties;specifically,the compressive yield strength at room temperature increases from 350 MPa to 646 MPa,indicating a significant 85%***,the microhardness increases from 230 HV to 304 *** dynamics simulations further reveal that the strengthening mechanism of Ni-42W-10Co-x Mo alloys is Mo-induced solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening.

EDA-complexes-enabled photochemical synthesis of α-amino acids with imines and tetrabutylammonium oxalate

The synthesis ofα-amino acid from imines with different carbonyl sources is attractive for both synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry ***,which were easily available from the corresponding ketones and amines,were employed as one of the most ideal ***,cyanation and subsequent hydrolysis were required to install the carboxyl group^([1]).In these cases,the toxicity of the cyanation reagents limited its further synthetic applications in organic ***,metal activation of imine substrates to make the organometallic intermediate and trap CO_(2) to give the desiredα-amino acid were also developed by many groups(Scheme 1A).The utilization of stoiochiometric amounts of metal reagents was required to realize the ***,Yu reported a novel photocatalytic reductive carboxylation protocol for synthesis ofα-amino acid from imines with CO_(2)as the carbonyl source^([2]).
