Recent developments in thermal characteristics of surface dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators driven by sinusoidal high-voltage power

Flow control using surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge(DBD)plasma actuators driven by a sinusoidal alternating-current power supply has gained significant attention from the aeronautic industry.The induced flow field of the plasma actuator,with the starting vortex in the wall jet,plays an important role in flow control.However,the energy consumed for producing the induced flow field is only a small fraction of the total energy utilized by the plasma actuator,and most of the total energy is used in gas heating and dielectric heating.Therefore,an in-depth analysis of the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is the key to develop its potential capability further.In addition,compared with the investigation on the aerodynamic characteristics of the plasma actuator,there is a relative lack of detail in the study of its thermal characteristics.Understanding the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is of great interest for providing a deeper insight into the underlying working principles,advancing its numerical simulation model,prolonging its life,and achieving several potential engineering applications,such as antiicing and deicing.The present paper reviews the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator,summarizes the influence of the dielectric film and actuation parameters on heating,and discusses the formation and transfer mechanism of the induced heating based on the discharge regimes of the plasma actuator in one cycle.

A risk score model for predicting cardiac rupture after acute myocardial infarction

Background:Cardiac rupture (CR) is a major lethal complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).However,no valid risk score model was found to predict CR after AMI in previous researches.This study aimed to establish a simple model to assess risk of CR after AMI,which could be easily used in a clinical environment.Methods:This was a retrospective case-control study that included 53 consecutive patients with CR after AMI during a period from January 1,2010 to December 31,2017.The controls included 524 patients who were selected randomly from 7932 AMI patients without CR at a 1:10 ratio.Risk factors for CR were identified using univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression.Risk score model was developed based on multiple regression coefficients.Performance of risk model was evaluated using receiveroperating characteristic (ROC) curves and internal validity was explored using bootstrap analysis.Results:Among all 7985 AMI patients,53 (0.67%) had CR (free wall rupture,n=39;ventricular septal rupture,n=14).Hospital mortalities were 92.5% and 4.01% in patients with and without CR (P<0.001).Independent variables associated with CR included:older age,female gender,higher heart rate at admission,body mass index (BMI)<25 kg/m^2,lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and no primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) treatment.In ROC analysis,our CR risk assess model demonstrated a very good discriminate power (area under the curve [AUC]= 0.895,95% confidence interval:0.845–0.944,optimism-corrected AUC= 0.821,P<0.001).Conclusion:This study developed a novel risk score model to help predict CR after AMI,which had high accuracy and was very simple to use.

Semantic segmentation-assisted instance feature fusion for multi-level 3D part instance segmentation

Recognizing 3D part instances from a 3D point cloud is crucial for 3D structure and scene understanding.Several learning-based approaches use semantic segmentation and instance center prediction as training tasks and fail to further exploit the inherent relationship between shape semantics and part instances.In this paper,we present a new method for 3D part instance segmentation.Our method exploits semantic segmentation to fuse nonlocal instance features,such as center prediction,and further enhances the fusion scheme in a multi-and cross-level way.We also propose a semantic region center prediction task to train and leverage the prediction results to improve the clustering of instance points.Our method outperforms existing methods with a large-margin improvement in the PartNet benchmark.We also demonstrate that our feature fusion scheme can be applied to other existing methods to improve their performance in indoor scene instance segmentation tasks.

Expression profile of circular RNAs in epicardial adipose tissue in heart failure

Background:Recent studies have reported circular RNA(circRNA)expression profiles in various tissue types;however,circRNA expression profile in human epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)remains undefined.This work aimed to compare circRNA expression patterns in EAT between the heart failure(HF)and non-HF groups.Methods:RNA-sequencing was carried out to compare circRNA expression patterns in EAT specimens from coronary artery disease cases between the HF and non-HF groups.Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed for validation.Comparisons of patient characteristics between the two groups were using t test,Mann-Whitney U test,and Chi-squared test.Results:A total of 141 circRNAs substantially different between the HF and non-HF groups(P2)were detected,including 56 up-regulated and 85 down-regulated.Among them,hsa_circ_0005565 stood out,for it had the highest fold change and was significantly increased in HF patients in quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction validation.The top highly expressed EAT circRNAs corresponded to genes involved in cell proliferation and inflammatory response,including GSE1,RHOBTB3,HIPK3,UBXN7,PCMTD1,N4BP2L2,CFLAR,EPB41L2,FCHO2,FNDC3B,and SPECC1.The top enriched Gene Ontology term and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway were positive regulation of metabolic processes and insulin resistance,respectively.Conclusion:These data indicate EAT circRNAs may contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders causing HF.

Atrial fibrillation （AF） is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is reported to increase the incidence of stroke by five to seven tblds, leading to the irregular ventricular rhythm and adversely impacted life quality, and the mortality could be increased as well by AF per se. Shen Song yang xin （SSYX） capsule is a novel traditional Chinese medicine composed of more than a dozen Chinese medicine herbs with significant antiarrhythmic effect. In the current study, the effect of SSYX capsule has been tested in an animal study and it was also indicated by randomized double-blinded, positive drug-controlled clinical trials, However, the working mechanism of SSYX capsule as antiarrhythmic drug is not completely clear yet. This study tried to investigate the effect of SSYX capsule on the myocardial electrophysiology of acute AF dog model.

On the topographic entity-oriented digital elevation model construction method for urban area land surface

Human activity transforms a land surface into a complex surface where artificial and natural landforms coexist and continuous and emergent landforms merge.In this background,the problems of conventional digital elevation models(DEMs),such as morphological distortion,complicated updates,and lack of information,are increasingly prominent.This study proposes a new idea of DEM construction based on the concept of geographic ontology.First,landforms with common features are abstracted into a certain type of topographic entity based on their morphologies and semantics.For each type of topographic entity,a DEM was constructed independently based on the available elevation information and other information about the semantics and spatial relationships.Second,individual DEMs were merged into a complete DEM following certain rules.A 1 km2 area located in the suburb of Nanjing,Jiangsu Province,China,was selected as the experimental area.The effectiveness of the model construction method proposed in this study was verified.The results show that the DEM constructed according to the idea of this study has a significantly better performance than the conventional DEMs.The constructed DEM in this study can well represent ground objects,such as slopes,farmland,and ditches.In particular,the constructed DEM ensures the morphological accuracy of the ground objects.

Interaction Between Memory Load and Experimental Design on Brain Connectivity and Network Topology

The conventional approach to investigating functional connectivity in the block-designed study usually concatenates task blocks or employs residuals of task activation.While providing many insights into brain functions,the block design adds more manipulation in functional network analysis that may reduce the purity of the blood oxygenation level-dependent signal.Recent studies utilized one single long run for task trials of the same condition,the so-called continuous design,to investigate functional connectivity based on task functional magnetic resonance imaging.Continuous brain activities associated with the single-task condition can be directly utilized for task-related functional connectivity assessment,which has been examined for working memory,sensory,motor,and semantic task experiments in previous research.But it remains unclear how the block and continuous design influence the assessment of task-related functional connectivity networks.This study aimed to disentangle the separable effects of block/continuous design and working memory load on task-related functional connectivity networks,by using repeated-measures analysis of variance.Across 50 young healthy adults,behavioral results of accuracy and reaction time showed a significant main effect of design as well as interaction between design and load.Imaging results revealed that the cingulo-opercular,fronto-parietal,and default model networks were associated with not only task activation,but significant main effects of design and load as well as their interaction on intra-and inter-network functional connectivity and global network topology.Moreover,a significant behavior-brain association was identified for the continuous design.This work has extended the evidence that continuous design can be used to study task-related functional connectivity and subtle brain-behavioral relationships.

Plasma levels of Elabela are associated with coronary angiographic severity in patients with acute coronary syndrome

Background Elabela(ELA) was newly discovered as a novel endogenous ligand of the apelin receptor(APJ) which has demonstrated to be crucial for cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarction, hypertension and heart failure. Previous experiments have revealed that ELA reduced arterial pressure and exerted positive inotropic effects on the heart. However, the role of plasma ELA levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS) and its relationship with severity of coronary arteries have not been investigated. Methods Two hundred and one subjects who were hospitalized for chest pain and underwent coronary angiography were recruited in this study. One hundred and seventy five patients were diagnosed with ACS and twenty-six subjects with negative coronary angiography were included in the control group. Plasma ELA levels, routine blood test, blood lipid, liver and kidney functions were measured. The number of coronary arteries and SYNTAX(Synergy Between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) score of coronary lesions were used to evaluate the extent of coronary artery stenosis. Results ELA in patients with ACS was significantly higher than that in the control group(P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in plasma ELA levels among patients with single-, double-and triple-vessel diseases. However, in the generalized additive model(GAM), there was a threshold nonlinear correlation between the ELA levels and Syntax I score(P < 0.001). Plasma ELA levels were positively correlated with the Syntax I score when the ELA levels ranged from 63.47 to 85.49 ng/m L. There was no significant association between the plasma ELA levels and the extent of coronary artery stenosis when the ELA levels were less than 63.47 ng/m L or higher than 85.49 ng/m L. Conclusion The present study demonstrates for the first time that plasma ELA levels are increased in patients with ACS. The rise in endogenous ELA levels was associated with severity of coronary stenosis and may be involved in the pathogenesis

Homopolypeptide Vesicles Triggered by Side-Chain Hydration

The formation of homopolypeptide vesicles and the identification of their self-assembly mechanism have been challenging issues in the field of polymer self-assembly. Using complementary circular dichroism(CD), Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance(LF-NMR) spectroscopies, in this study we show that the higher hydrophilic ability of side-chains is a key factor for the formation of homopolypeptide vesicles from homo poly(Nε-carbobenzoxy-L-lysine)(PZlys), in which the vesicular structures are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM) measurements. Poly(γ-benzyl-Lglutamate-co-Nε-carbobenzoxy-L-lysine) [P(BLG-co-Zlys)] containing different molar ratios of BLG to Zlys units with the same peptide backbone as PZlys are used as the controls. The copolypeptides can only form micelles under the same conditions, due to the more hydrophobic nature of their side-chains. These results show that the specific side-chain structure of the polypeptides plays a fundamental role in the self-assembly of homopolypeptides. These findings can be useful to understand how the hydrophilicity of the side chains of amino acid residues on the surface of a protein affects its structures.
