Spatial trends of dustfall over northern China in the spring and their influencing factors

The spatial trends of dustfall of different sizes over northern China during April and May 2001,and March 2002,and their influencing factors,were *** divided the dustfall into seven grades based on particle *** dustfall and dustfall for each grade were highest in desert regions then in regions undergoing desertification,and the total dustfall,dustfall 250 μm were higher in western agricultural regions closer to desert areas than in eastern agricultural *** spatial trends in dustfall <300 μm in diameter were most strongly correlated with dust events,and the content of coarse particles increased with increasing severity of dust *** the spatial trend for dust events appears to be controlled by geomorphic conditions,vegetation coverage,soil moisture,and the distance from dust source,dustfall <300 μm in diameter appears to have the same controlling factors as dust events,but the control decreases with increasing particle ***,the driving force for dust emissions,also influenced the spatial trends in dustfall <200 μm in diameter,and especially for dustfall 50 to 100 μm in *** dustfall <300 μm in diameter and precipitation were not strongly spatially correlated,there is some evidence that high precipitation decreased deposition by restraining blowing *** coarser the dustfall,the weaker the correlation with wind speed;however,transport of larger particles still occurs,and further research will be required to test the possibility that this dust is entrained mainly by the small-scale dust devils that are commonly observed in the study area.

We present a fully stabilized Yb-fiber frequency comb locked to a microwave standard and an optical reference separately. The carrier-envelope offset frequency is generated by a standard f–2f interferometer with 40 dB signal-tonoise ratio. The offset frequency and the repetition rate are stabilized simultaneously to the radio frequency reference for more than 30 hours, and the fractional Allan deviation of the comb is the same as the microwave standard of 10^(-12) at 1 ***, the comb is locked to an ultra-stable optical reference at 972 nm using an intracavity electro-optic modulator,exhibiting a residual integrated phase noise of 458 mrad(1 Hz–10 MHz) and an in-loop tracking stability of 1.77× 10^(-18) at 1 s, which is significantly raised by six orders comparing to the case locked to the microwave frequency standard.

Surgical treatment of sacral fractures following lumbosacral arthrodesis: Case report and literature review

Sacral fractures following posterior lumbosacral fusion are an uncommon complication. Only a few case series and case reports have been published so far. This article presents a case of totally displaced sacral fracture following posterior L4-S1 fusion in a 65-yearold patient with a 15-year history of corticosteroid use who underwent open reduction and internal fixation using iliac screws. The patient was followed for 2 years. A thorough review of the literature was conducted using the Medline database between 1994 and 2014. Immediately after the revision surgery, the patient's pain in the buttock and left leg resolved significantly. The patient was followed for 2 years. The weakness in the left lower extremity improved gradually from 3/5 to 5/5. In conclusion, the incidence of postoperative sacral fractures could have been underestimated, because most of these fractures are not visible on a plain radiograph. Computed tomography has been proved to be able to detect most such fractures and should probably be performed routinely when patients complain of renewed buttock pain within 3 mo after lumbosacral fusion. The majority of the patients responded well to conservative treatments, and extending the fusion construct to the iliac wings using iliac screws may be needed when there is concurrent fracture displacement, sagittal imbalance, neurologic symptoms, or painful nonunion.

Effects of geomorphic conditions, wind speed, and precipitation on dustfall over northern China

We investigated how dustfall flux (DF) and dust particle size (DPS) were affected by geomorphic conditions, wind speed, and precipitation using data from 27 sites in northern China. The sites with the greatest DF and greatest median diameter of dustfall (MDD) were primarily in desert regions and had extensive mobile sands. DF and MDD were lowest in agricultural regions, which had low levels of coarse particles because of human land use and high vegetation coverage that restrained blowing sand. DF values were higher and MDD values were lower in the western agricultural region than in the eastern agricultural region because the former is closer to desert regions and contains more fine dust that has traveled far. In regions with extensive desertified lands, DF values were lower than those in desert regions, and MDD values were greater than in agricultural regions, possibly due to coarsening of soil texture by desertification processes combined with higher vegetation coverage and soil moisture than in desert regions, thereby restraining blowing sand. Although high DF and MDD always coincided spatially with strong winds and low precipitation, the strong winds and low precipitation did not always mean high DF and MDD. High DF also coincided temporally with periods of low precipitation, but low precipitation did not always mean high DF. Thus, although the spatial trends in DF and DPS were controlled mostly by geomorphic conditions, and monthly trends in DF were controlled mainly by wind speed, weak wind and high precipitation can restrain the blowing sand at certain times and locations. Seasonal changes in DPS may be controlled simultaneously by geomorphic conditions, meteorological factors, and distance from source areas, not solely by the winter monsoon.

Expression of BAFF in the trophoblast and decidua of normal early pregnant women and patients with recurrent spontaneous miscarriage

Background BAFF, the B cell activation factor, is a member of the tumor necrosis factor （TNF） ligand family that binds to BCMA, TACI, and BAFF-R. Previous studies have shown that members of the TNF family are detected in human placental trophoblast cells, but the expression patterns of BAFF involved in human decidua and the differential expression of BAFF between normal pregnancy and miscarriage are still incompletely documented or unknown. This study was designed to investigate the expression of BAFF and BAFF-R in the trophoblast and decidua of normal early pregnant women and recurrent spontaneous abortion （RSA） patients.Methods Forty-five patients with RSA and 45 normal pregnant women were included in this study. By reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）, Western blotting and immunohistochemical experiments, we explored the expression of BAFF and BAFF-R in the maternal-fetal interface of normal early pregnant women and RSA patients.Results Analysis by RT-PCR and Western blotting revealed that BAFF was detected in both trophoblast and decidua of all the samples, and the expression level was higher in the tissues of normal early pregnant women （P〈0.05） than that of recurrent spontaneous abortion patients under the same gestational weeks. Messages for BAFF-R were absent. Immunohistochemical experiments showed that expression of BAFF was cell-specific which was localized to villous cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast cells in trophoblast and to stromal cells in decidua. Whereas BAFF was prominent on the trophoblast and decidua of normal early pregnant women, it was decreased in the tissues of RSA patients.Conclusions BAFF might steer maternal leukocytes away from a harmful immune response and toward a favorable one and play a potentially vital role for successful pregnancy.

Relationship between IL-23R rs11209026 Gene Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Acute Coronary Syndrome

Background: Several studies illustrated that IL-23/Th17 axis could be an important pro-inflammatory pathway in atherosclerosis. As a key element in this inflammatory mechanism, interleukin-23 receptor (IL-23R) may play a critical role in the pathological process of atherosclerosis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL-23R have recently been consistently found to be associated with atherosclerosis diseases. However, its association with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is still indistinct. Here, we discussed whether genetic polymorphisms in IL-23R (rs11209026 G/A) were associated with susceptibility to ACS. Methods: Among 160 patients with ACS, it includes 80 patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP), 80 patients with myocardial infarction (MI), and 80 control subjects were selected randomly. The polymorphisms of IL-23R (rs11209026 G/A) were analyzed by the Sanger method. Results: Data showed that percentages of rs11209026 AG genotypes were significantly lower in ACS group (including: UAP and MI) than in controls (odds ratio [OR] = 0.324, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.148 - 0.712, p = 0.005;OR = 0.351, 95% CI: 0.135 - 0.910, p = 0.031;OR = 0.303, 95% CI: 0.112 - 0.817, p = 0.018, respectively). Furthermore, there was no correlation between rs11209026 G/A SNP and dyslipidemia-associated ACS. Conclusions: The variant of the rs11209026 polymorphism in IL-23R gene might decrease the risk of ACS, and these data suggest that AG genotype of the rs11209026 G/A polymorphism may act as a protective factor for acute coronary syndrome and subtype of ACS.
