GPa-level pressure-induced enhanced corrosion resistance in TiZrTaNbSn biomedical high-entropy alloy

TiZrTaNb-based high-entropy alloys(HEAs)are research frontier of biomedical materials due to their high hardness,good yield strength,excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance.Sn,as an essential trace element in the human body that plays a significant role in physiological process.It has stable chemical properties and a low elastic modulus.In this study,a new material,TiZrTaNbSn HEAs,was proposed as a potential biomedical alloy.The Ti_(35)Zr_(25)Ta_(15)Nb_(15)Sn_(10)biomedical high-entropy alloys(BHEAs)were successfully prepared through an arc melting furnace and then remelted using a German high-temperature and high-pressure apparatus under GPa-level(4 GPa and 7 GPa).The precipitation behavior of the needle-like HCP-Zr_(5)Sn_(3)phase that precipitates discontinuously at the grain boundary was successfully controlled.The phase constitution,microstructure,and corrosion resistance of the alloy were studied.The results show that the needle-like HCP-Zr_(5)Sn_(3)phase is eliminated and the(Zr,Sn)-rich nano-precipitated phase is precipitated in the microstructure under high pressure,which leads to the narrowing of grain boundaries and consequently improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy.In addition,the formation mechanisms of(Zr,Sn)-rich nanoprecipitates in BHEAs were discussed.More Zr and Sn dissolve in the matrix due to the effect of high pressure,during the cooling process,they precipitate to form a(Zr,Sn)-rich nano-precipitated phase.

A deep learning interatomic potential suitable for simulating radiation damage in bulk tungsten

So far, it has been a challenge for existing interatomic potentials to accurately describe a wide range of physical properties and maintain reasonable efficiency. In this work, we develop an interatomic potential for simulating radiation damage in body-centered cubic tungsten by employing deep potential, a neural network-based deep learning model for representing the potential energy surface. The resulting potential predicts a variety of physical properties consistent with first-principles calculations, including phonon spectrum, thermal expansion, generalized stacking fault energies, energetics of free surfaces, point defects, vacancy clusters, and prismatic dislocation loops. Specifically, we investigated the elasticity-related properties of prismatic dislocation loops, i.e., their dipole tensors, relaxation volumes, and elastic interaction energies. This potential is found to predict the maximal elastic interaction energy between two 1/2 loops better than previous potentials, with a relative error of only 7.6%. The predicted threshold displacement energies are in reasonable agreement with experimental results, with an average of 128 eV. The efficiency of the present potential is also comparable to the tabulated gaussian approximation potentials and modified embedded atom method potentials, meanwhile, can be further accelerated by graphical processing units. Extensive benchmark tests indicate that this potential has a relatively good balance between accuracy, transferability, and efficiency.

Glaucoma drainage device implantation and cyclophotocoagulation in the management of refractory glaucoma after Descemet-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty

AIM:To compare the surgical outcomes of glaucoma drainage device implantation(GDI)and trans-scleral neodymium:YAG cyclophotocoagulation(CPC)in the management of refractory glaucoma after Descemetstripping automated endothelial keratoplasty(DSAEK).METHODS:This retrospective study on observational case series enrolled 29 patients who underwent DSAEK and posterior anti-glaucoma surgery(15 with GDI and 14 with CPC).The main outcome measures were intraocular pressure(IOP),glaucoma surgery success rate(defined as IOP of 6–21 mm Hg without additional anti-glaucoma operation),number of glaucoma medications,endothelial graft status,and best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA).RESULTS:The mean follow-up time was 34.1 and 21.0mo for DSAEK or glaucoma surgeries,both for the GDI and CPC groups.Both groups showed significant IOP reduction after glaucoma surgery.The GDI group presented a significantly higher success rate in IOP control than the CPC group(60%vs 21.4%,P=0.03).Both procedures significantly decreased the number of glaucoma medications(P=0.03).Forty percent and 57%of cases in the GDI and the CPC group,respectively,experienced endothelial graft failure during follow-up(P=0.36).Significantly worse BCVA after surgery was observed in the CPC group but not in the GDI group.CONCLUSION:Both GDI and CPC significantly decrease IOP in eyes with glaucoma after DSAEK.GDI is preferable to CPC in refractory glaucoma cases after DSAEK,as it manifests a significantly higher success rate for IOP control,similar endothelial graft failure rate,and relatively preserves BCVA than CPC.

Synchronous condensers(SCs)are generally used at the receiving-end stations of ultra-high-voltage direct current(UHVDC)transmission systems due to their strong reactive power support and flexible regulation of reactive power according to the interconnected grids operating conditions.In this paper,different starting control schemes of a SC integrated power grid are investigated providing four main contributions:1)The principle of reactive power support of the SC on the interconnected power grid is analytically studied,providing the establishment of mathematical models.2)Four different starting control schemes are developed for the initialization and SC integration,i.***.in Scheme 1,a preset initial falling speed is directly utilized without initialization;in Scheme 2,a black start sequential control approach with a static frequency converter(SFC)is proposed;in Scheme 3,PI/PD/PID controllers are respectively applied for the excitation device at the speed-falling stage;in Scheme 4,a pre-insertion approach of an energy absorption component with R/L/RL is utilized to suppress the surges at the SC integration instant.3)The dynamic behaviors of four different starting schemes at specific operating stages are evaluated.4)The success rate of SC integration is analyzed to evaluate starting control performance.Performance of the SC interconnected system with four different starting control schemes is evaluated in the timedomain simulation environment PSCAD/EMTDC^(TM).The results prove the superiority of the proposed starting control approach in Scheme 4.

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) by polydopamine-modified lignin from aqueous solution: Batch and XAFS studies

Lignocellulose has the potential to become a bio-based adsorbent due to its biodegradability and renewability.In this study,a novel polydopamine functionalized-lignin(lignin@PDA),prepared via self-polymerization of dopamine(PDA)on lignin,was used as a bio-based adsorbent for rapid scavenging of hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)).The morphology,functional groups,crystalline structure,and chemical composition of lignin@PDA were characterized with a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.The Cr(VI)adsorption process of lignin@PDA was studied using batch experiments as a function of pH,ionic strength,adsorbent dose,and contact time at room temperature.The adsorption rate of lignin@PDA was five times greater than that of the unmodified lignin,with a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.6 mg/g in an acidic medium.The adsorption of Cr(VI)on lignin@PDA fit the pseudo-secondorder equation and the Freundlich model,indicating that the adsorption process was mainly dominated by chemisorption and surface complexation.The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr(VI)on lignin@PDA was an endothermic and spontaneous process.The X-ray absorption fine structure results showed that sorption and reduction of Cr(VI)into Cr(II)occurred simultaneously on lignin.Moreover,PDA coating not only improved the reactivity of lignin but also promoted the complete reduction of Cr(VI)by lignin.According to these results,polydopamine functionalized-lignin is a promising bio-based adsorbent for immobilization of Cr(VI)from wastewater.

Smart materials for safe lithium-ion batteries against thermal runaway

In recent years,the new energy storage system,such as lithium ion batteries(LIBs),has attracted much attention.In order to meet the demand of industrial progress for longer cycle life,higher energy density and cost efficiency,a quantity of research has been conducted on the commercial application of LIBs.However,it is difficult to achieve satisfying safety and cycling performance simultaneously.There may be thermal runaway(TR),external impact,overcharge and overdischarge in the process of battery abuse,which makes the safety problem of LIBs more prominent.In this review,we summarize recent progress in the smart safety materials design towards the goal of preventing TR of LIBs reversibly from different abuse conditions.Benefiting from smart responsive materials and novel structural design,the safety of LIBs can be improved a lot.We expect to provide a comprehensive reference for the development of smart and safe lithium-based battery materials.

The combined effect of cavitation and silt abrasion presents a great challenge and threat to secure the operation and the efficiency of hydraulic machineries working in sediment-laden fluid.The present paper critically reviews the current research progress on the interaction mechanisms of the bubbles and the particles.Firstly,the analytical models including boundary treatment methods for predicting the jet dynamics of the bubble collapse near particles are demonstrated.Secondly,the bubble collapsing dynamics,jet dynamics and shock wave characteristics near particles are revealed both experimentally and numerically.Finally,the bubble-particle-wall system is investigated with a focus on microjets.

Differences and Correlations of Morphological and Hemodynamic Parameters between Anterior Circulation Bifurcation and Side-wall Aneurysms

Objective:The objective of this research was to explore the difference and correlation of the morphological and hemodynamic features between sidewall and bifurcation aneurysms in anterior circulation arteries,utilizing computational fluid dynamics as a tool for analysis.Methods:In line with the designated inclusion criteria,this study covered 160 aneurysms identified in 131 patients who received treatment at Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College,Huazhong University of Science and Technology,China,from January 2021 to September 2022.Utilizing follow-up digital subtraction angiography(DSA)data,these cases were classified into two distinct groups:the sidewall aneurysm group and the bifurcation aneurysm group.Morphological and hemodynamic parameters in the immediate preoperative period were meticulously calculated and examined in both groups using a three-dimensional DSA reconstruction model.Results:No significant differences were found in the morphological or hemodynamic parameters of bifurcation aneurysms at varied locations within the anterior circulation.However,pronounced differences were identified between sidewall and bifurcation aneurysms in terms of morphological parameters such as the diameter of the parent vessel(Dvessel),inflow angle(θF),and size ratio(SR),as well as the hemodynamic parameter of inflow concentration index(ICI)(P0.5,P<0.001).Conclusions:The significant differences in certain morphological and hemodynamic parameters between sidewall and bifurcation aneurysms emphasize the importance to contemplate variances in threshold values for these parameters when evaluating the risk of rupture in anterior circulation aneurysms.Whether it is a bifurcation or sidewall aneurysm,these disparities should be considered.The morphological parameter SR has the potential to be a valuable clinical tool for promptly distinguishing

Accurate Quantification of Pure Thiacloprid with mass Balance and Quantitative H-NMR

Thiacloprid is the first-generation neonicotinoid insecticide,which is widely used in modern agriculture.Reference materials are essential for sound measurement and traceability of results in chemical analysis.Pure thiacloprid was comprehensively assessed by two orthonormal methods:mass balance(MB) and quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(qNMR).From MB,its mass fraction value was 998.4 mg/g with the subtraction of structurally related impurities(99.87%),inorganic impurities(0.006 mg/g),water(0.33 mg/g),and volatile organic solvent(0 mg/g).To guarantee sufficient separation of structurally related purity,peak purity of thiacloprid was evaluated by five points of UV spectra.From the qNMR of hydrogen,its mass fraction value was 995.7 mg/g which was traced to the internal standard(methyl sulfone).Finally,the certified value was assigned to 997 mg/g,together with an expanded uncertainty of 3 mg/g(k=2).This high-purity thiacloprid can be applied to routine monitoring in agriculture and the food fields.

Study on the atmospheric heat engine efficiency and heat source characteristics of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in summer

There are many types of atmospheric heat engines in land-air systems.The accurate definition,calculation and interpretation of the efficiency of atmospheric heat engines are key to understanding energy transfer and transformation of landair systems.The atmosphere over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)in summer can be regarded as a positive heat engine.The study of the heat engine efficiency is helpful to better understand land-air interaction and thermal-dynamic processes on the QTP.It also provides a new perspective to explain the impact of the QTP on the climate of China,East Asia and even the world.In this paper,we used MOD08 and ERA5 reanalysis data to calculate the atmospheric heat engine efficiency,surface heat source and atmospheric heat source on the QTP in summer(may to September)from 2000 to 2020.The average atmospheric heat engine efficiency on the QTP in summer from 2000 to 2020 varies between 1.2%and 1.5%,which is less than 1.6%;the heat engine efficiency in summer is higher than that in June,July and August;the Qaidam Basin is the region with the highest atmospheric heat engine efficiency,followed by the western QTP.The mean surface heat source on the QTP in summer from 2000 to 2020 is 96.0 W m^(−2),the atmospheric heat source is 90.7 W m^(−2),and the release of precipitation condensation latent heat is the most important component of the atmospheric heat source on the QTP in summer.There is a strong and significant positive correlation between the atmospheric heat engine efficiency and the surface heat source on the QTP in summer.The precipitation condensation latent heat is the most important component of the atmospheric heat source in summer and can reflect the precipitation process.There is a strong and significant negative correlation between the atmospheric heat engine efficiency and the atmospheric heat source on the QTP in summer.
