AIM:To analyze the retinal modulation transfer function between amblyopes whose visual acuity was corrected to 5.0 and normal subjects at the same age. METHODS: RM-800 used to detect contrast sensitivity was adopted to measure MTF of 96 amblyopes (96 eyes) whose visual acuity was corrected to 5.0 and 80 normal controls (80 eyes) at the same age under six interference fringes (IVA=0.06, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8). RESULTS: The functional values of amblyopes were significantly lower than those of normal subjects in every fringe (P<0.01), especially in medium and high frequency. CONCLUSION: For amblyopes, MTF was still abnormal after stopping the treatments.

Sarl is a small GTPase involved in COPⅡ vesicle transport. Previous studies showed that H79G mutation of Sarl can lock Sarl in its GTP-bound active conformation, stabilize coat assembly, and prevent the disassembly of COP Ⅱ vesicle coats by reducing Sec23/24 GAP- stimulated hydrolysis. We show here that the replacement of His79 by glycine induces a large conformation change in switch Ⅱ and results in the lost of hydrogen bond between His79 and its associated nucleophilic water molecule that was hypothesized to reduce the GAP-stimulated hydrolysis during the COP Ⅱ assembly and disassembly. These results confirm that the switch Ⅱ conformation is important for COP Ⅱ disassembly through coat-controlled GTP hydrolysis.

Graphene oxide(GO),the functionalized graphene with oxygenated groups(mainly epoxy and hydroxyl),has attracted resurgent interests in the past decade owing to its large surface area,superior physical and chemical properties,and easy composition with other materials via surface functional ***,GO is used as an important raw material for mass production of graphene via ***,under different conditions,the coverage,types,and arrangements of oxygen-containing groups in GO can be varied,which give rise to excellent and controllable physical properties,such as tunable electronic and mechanical properties depending closely on oxidation degree,suppressed thermal conductivity,optical transparency and fluorescence,and nonlinear optical *** on these outstanding properties,many electronic,optical,optoelectronic,and thermoelectric devices with high performance can be achieved on the basis of *** we present a comprehensive review on recent progress of GO,focusing on the atomic structures,fundamental physical properties,and related device applications,including transparent and flexible conductors,field-effect transistors,electrical and optical sensors,fluorescence quenchers,optical limiters and absorbers,surface enhanced Raman scattering detectors,solar cells,light-emitting diodes,and thermal rectifiers.

The diagnosis of postradiation nasopharyngeal skull base lesions in petients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) is still a tough problem in clinical *** early and accurate diagnosis is important for subsequent *** prospectively evaluated the diagnostic value of plasma Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) DNA in detecting postradiation nasopharyngeal skull base lesions in NPC *** July 2006 to September 2010,90 patients with postradiation NPC(34 women and 56 men;median age:42 years) met the selection criteria and were recruited in this *** postradiation nasopharyngeal skull base lesions were found in the latest magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) examinations before endoscopic surgery,and the nasopharyngeal cavity was normal under flexible *** EBV DNA detection was performed within 2 weeks before endoscopic surgery.A total of 90 endoscopic operations were successfully performed without any postoperative *** confirmed by postoperative pathology were found in 30 *** specificity,positive and negative predictive values of plasma EBV DNA detection were better than those of *** addition,combining plasma EBV DNA detection with MRI improved the specificity and positive predictive values of *** EBV DNA detection followed by MRI would help to diagnose recurrence whereas MRI was *** results indicate that plasma EBV DNA is an effective and feasible biomarker for detecting postradiation nasopharyngeal skull base lesions in NPC patients.

Currently,the enhancement in electromagnetic interference(EMI)performance of polymeric composite generally relies on either improving electrical conductivity(σ)for stronger electromagnetic(EM)reflections or tailoring structure for higher EM ***,we proposed a novel technique called cyclic pulsating pressure enhanced segregating structuration(CPP-SS),which can reinforce these two factors *** structural information was supplied by optical microscopy(OM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM),both of which confirmed the formation and evolution of segregate structured ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE)/graphene ***,the result showed that CPP-SS can significantly improve theσof ***,advanced specific EMI shielding efficiency of 31.1 d B/mm was achieved for UHMWPE/graphene composite at 1-mm thickness and a low graphene loading of 5 wt%.Meanwhile,it also confirmed that the intrinsic disadvantage of poor mechanical properties of conventional segregated structure composites can be *** work is believed to provide a fundamental understanding of the structural and performance evolutions of segregated structured composites prepared under CPPSS,and to bring us a simple and efficient approach for fabricating high-performance,strong and light-weight polymeric EMI shields.

Assessment of past-climate simulations of regional climate models(RCMs)is important for understanding the reliability of RCMs when used to project future regional ***,we assess the performance and discuss possible causes of biases in a WRF-based RCM with a grid spacing of 50 km,named WRFG,from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program(NARCCAP)in simulating wet season precipitation over the Central United States for a period when observational data are *** RCM reproduces key features of the precipitation distribution characteristics during late spring to early summer,although it tends to underestimate the magnitude of *** dry bias is partially due to the model’s lack of skill in simulating nocturnal precipitation related to the lack of eastward propagating convective systems in the *** in reproducing large-scale circulation and environmental conditions is another contributing *** too weak simulated pressure gradient between the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico results in weaker southerly winds in between,leading to a reduction of warm moist air transport from the Gulf to the Central Great *** simulated low-level horizontal convergence fields are less favorable for upward motion than in the NARR and hence,for the development of moist convection as ***,a careful examination of an RCM’s deficiencies and the identification of the source of errors are important when using the RCM to project precipitation changes in future climate scenarios.
