Associations between remnant cholesterol levels and mortality in patients with diabetes

BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is frequently present in patients with diabetes.The associations of remnant cholesterol and mortality remains unclear in patients with diabetes.AIM To explore the associations of remnant cholesterol with all-cause and cardiovas-cular mortality in patients with diabetes.METHODS This prospective cohort study included 4740 patients with diabetes who par-ticipated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 through 2018.Remnant cholesterol was used as the exposure variable,and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were considered outcome events.Outcome data were obtained from the National Death Index,and all participants were followed from the interview date until death or December 31,2019.Multivariate proportional Cox regression models were used to explore the associations between exposure and outcomes,in which remnant cholesterol was modeled as both a categorical and a continuous variable.Restricted cubic splines(RCSs)were calculated to assess the nonlinearity of associations.Subgroup(stratified by sex,age,body mass index,and duration of diabetes)and a series of sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the robustness of the associations.RESULTS During a median follow-up duration of 83 months,1370 all-cause deaths and 389 cardiovascular deaths were documented.Patients with remnant cholesterol levels in the third quartile had a reduced risk of all-cause mortality[hazard ratio(HR)95%confidence interval(CI):0.66(0.52-0.85)];however,when remnant cholesterol was modeled as a continuous variable,it was associated with increased risks of all-cause[HR(95%CI):1.12(1.02-1.21)per SD]and cardiovascular[HR(95%CI):1.16(1.01-1.32),per SD]mortality.The RCS demonstrated nonlinear associations of remnant cholesterol with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.Subgroup and sensitivity analyses did not reveal significant differences from the above results.CONCLUSION In patients with diabetes,higher remnant cholesterol was associated with increased risks of all-cause and cardiovascul

Co-Fe quantum dots coupled with ultrathin g-C_(3)N_(4) nanosheets as efficient and stable photo-Fenton catalysts

The Fenton reaction has been widely used in the environmental remediation.However,the sharp decline of photo-Fenton catalysts activity under neutral conditions is still an urgent problem to be solved.This study reports a Co/Fe bimetallic oxide quantum dots-coupled g-C_(3)N_(4)nanosheets(CoFeO QDs/g-C_(3)N_(4) NSs) composites with efficient degradation of organic pollutants under neutral conditions.Under the photo-Fenton condition,rhodamine B(RhB) degradation efficiency reached 98.32% within 90min for CoFeO QDs/g-C_(3)N_(4) NSs composites.The formed heterojunction between CoFeO QDs and g-C_(3)N_(4) NSs achieves enhanced charge transfer and efficient charge separation.Co-Fe bimetals make g-C_(3)N_(4) NSs easier to excite the production of·OH by H_(2)O_(2),achieving excellent degradation efficiency and cycle stability for organic pollutants in a wide pH range.Therefore,CoFeO QDs/g-C_(3)N_(4)NSs composites can be used as efficient and stable photoFenton catalysts to degrade organic contaminants in practical applications.

Effects of comprehensive nursing on postoperative complications,mental status and quality of life in patients with glioma

BACKGROUND The complexity and refractory of brain glioma requires treatment that should involve a multidisciplinary approach to improve quality of care and fulfill patients’needs.AIM To explore the effects of comprehensive nursing on postoperative complications,psychological state and quality of life in patients with brain glioma.METHODS A total of 106 patients with confirmed brain gliomas admitted to Nanchong Central Hospital between January 2019 and May 2021 were selected by random sampling.They were categorized into an observation group and a control group using a random number table with 53 patients in each group.Patients in the observation group were given comprehensive nursing in addition to conventional nursing and patients in the control group were given conventional nursing.The overall incidence of postoperative complications including limb dysfunction,high fever and epilepsy was compared between the two groups.The mental status was evaluated in the two groups before and after intervention using self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)and self-rating depression scale(SDS).Quality of life was assessed and compared using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of life Questionnaire between the two groups before and after the intervention.RESULTS After intervention,the overall incidence of postoperative complications was significantly lower in the observation group(7.55%)than that in the control group(20.75%)(P0.05).However,after intervention,scores of SAS and SDS decreased in the two groups compared with those before intervention,and the scores of SAS and SDS were lower in the observation group than in the control group(all Plity of life between the two groups before the intervention(P>0.05).In contrast,quality of life increased in the two groups compared with those before intervention,and it was higher in the observation group t

Metachronous urothelial carcinoma in the renal pelvis,bladder,and urethra:A case report

BACKGROUND Urothelial carcinoma(UC)is a common malignancy of the urinary system that can occur anywhere from the renal pelvis to the proximal urethra.Most UCs are in the bladder and have multifocal growth.Upper urinary tract UC(UTUC),which occurs in the renal pelvis or ureter,accounts for only 5%to 10%of UCs.CASE SUMMARY In March 2015,a 70-year-old male who initially presented to a local hospital with a complaint of painless hematuria was diagnosed with UTUC of the right renal pelvis.The doctors administered radical nephroureterectomy and bladder cuff excision.Although the doctors recommended intravesical chemotherapy and regular follow-up,he rejected this advice.In December 2016,the patient presented at our hospital with dysuria.We identified UC in the residual bladder and administered radical cystectomy and left cutaneous ureterostomy.In November 2021,he presented again with urethral bleeding.We detected urethral UC as the cause of urethral orifice bleeding and administered radical urethrectomy.Since then,he has visited regularly for 6-mo follow-ups,and was in stable condition as of December 2022.CONCLUSION UTUC is prone to seeding and recurrence.Adjuvant instillation therapy and intense surveillance are crucial for these patients.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries are attractive candidates for energy storage due to their high theoretical specific capacities,free of dendrite formation and natural abundance of magnesium.However,the development of magnesium secondary batteries is severely limited by the lack of high-performance cathode materials and the incompatibility of electrode materials with electrolytes.Herein,we report the application of CuS nanoflower cathode material based on the conversion reaction mechanism for highly reversible magnesium batteries with boosted electrochemical performances by adjusting the compatibility between the cathode and electrolyte.By applying non-nucleophilic electrolytes based on magnesium bis(hexamethyldisilazide)and magnesium chloride dissolved in the mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran and N-butyl-N-methyl-piperidinium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide(Mg(HMDS)_(2)-MgCl_(2)/THF-PP14TFSI)or magnesium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide,magnesium chloride and aluminium chloride dissolved in dimethoxyethane(Mg(TFSI)2-MgCl_(2)-AlCl_(3)/DME),the magnesium batteries with CuS nanoflower cathode exhibit a high discharge capacity of~207 mAh·g^(–1)at 100 mA·g^(–1)and a long life span of 1,000 cycles at 500 mA·g^(–1).This work suggests that the rational regulation of compatibility between electrode and electrolyte plays a very important role in improving the performance of multi-valent ion secondary batteries.

AIM: To evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of a handheld infrared eccentric autorefractor(h ICA) with artificial intelligence(AI) by comparing its refraction measurements to those recorded using h ICA and a clinical table-mounted automatic refractor(TAR).METHODS: A cross-sectional study using three optometers, including h ICA with or without AI and TAR, for refractometry of adults(aged 19-49 years old) with no signs of ocular disease or trauma in the absence of cycloplegia. Right and left eye refraction data were recorded, including the spherical equivalent(SE), diopter of spherical power(DS), diopter of cylindrical power(DC) decomposed into vectors J0 and J45, and measurement times. To avoid analytical difficulties associated with the interdependence of observations between eyes from the same individual, the Generalized Estimation Equation was used to compare the SE, DS, J0 and J45 measurements, and the times thereof, among the different groups. The intraclass correlation coef f icient(ICC) and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to evaluate correlations among the measurements recorded by the three different instruments. Bland-Altman were used to analyze the precision of the equipment by the agreement. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients(140 eyes;mean age: 31.37 y;range: 19-49 y) were assessed using refractometry. In a brightly lit environment, there was no significant difference between the mean SE recorded using TAR and that recorded using h ICA with AI or without AI(both P>0.05). Since the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019,angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)has received widespread attention as the cell receptor of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus.At the same time,as a key enzyme in the renin-angiotensin-system,ACE2 is considered to be an endogenous negative regulator of vasoconstriction,proliferation,fibrosis,and proinflammation caused by the ACE-angiotensin II-angiotensin type 1 receptor axis.ACE2 is now implicated as being closely connected to diabetes,cardiovascular,kidney,and lung diseases,and so on.This review covers the available information on the host factors regulating ACE2 and discusses its role in a variety of pathophysiological conditions in animal models and humans.

Multi-focus image fusion based on fully convolutional networks

We propose a multi-focus image fusion method, in which a fully convolutional network for focus detection(FD-FCN) is constructed. To obtain more precise focus detection maps, we propose to add skip layers in the network to make both detailed and abstract visual information available when using FD-FCN to generate maps. A new training dataset for the proposed network is constructed based on dataset CIFAR-10. The image fusion algorithm using FD-FCN contains three steps: focus maps are obtained using FD-FCN, decision map generation occurs by applying a morphological process on the focus maps, and image fusion occurs using a decision map. We carry out several sets of experiments, and both subjective and objective assessments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed fusion method to state-of-the-art algorithms.

Diagnostic model of saliva protein finger print analysis of patients with gastric cancer

AIM:To explore the method for early diagnosis of gastric cancer by screening the expression spectrum of saliva protein in gastric cancer patients using mass spectrometry for proteomics.METHODS:Proportional peptide mass fingerprints were obtained by analysis based on proteomics matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight/mass spectrometry.A diagnosis model was established using weak cation exchange magnetic beads to test saliva specimens from gastric cancer patients and healthy subjects.RESULTS:Significant differences were observed in the mass to charge ratio(m/z) peaks of four proteins(1472.78 Da,2936.49 Da,6556.81 Da and 7081.17 Da) between gastric cancer patients and healthy subjects.CONCLUSION:The finger print mass spectrum of saliva protein in patients with gastric cancer can be established using gastric cancer proteomics.A diagnostic model for distinguishing protein expression mass spectra of gastric cancer from non-gastric-cancer saliva can be established according to the different expression of proteins 1472.78 Da,2936.49 Da,6556.81 Da and 7081.17 Da.The method for early diagnosis of gastric cancer is of certain value for screening special biological markers.
