Clinical characteristics of ocular toxocariasis in adults in north China

AIM: To investigate the clinical features of adult patients with ocular toxocariasis(OT) in north China and to diagnose adults OT patients in early stage.METHODS: Clinical data of 24 adults with OT were retrospectively analyzed.Slit lamp photographs and fundus photographs and other imaging examinations of all the patients were reviewed.A questionnaire concerning the pet ownership and place of residence was completed to investigate the possible infection origin.Descriptive statistical analyses were performed on the demographic data, clinical features, funduscopic findings and ELISA results.RESULTS: Among the 24 patients diagnosed with OT by Toxocara IgG antibody in intraocular fluid, 16(66.7%) eyes were right eye.The onset age of 12 eyes(50.0%) was between 30 and 40 years old, and 21(87.5%) eyes were of peripheral granuloma type.The most common sign was vitreous opacity.Granulomas were detected in all the eyes, and 20(83.3%) patients resided in rural area.In 4 patients, the concentration of anti-Toxocara antibody both in anterior humor and in vitreous humor were detected, and the results showed the concentration in vitreous humor was much higher than aqueous humor.CONCLUSION: Our study analyzes the clinical manifestation of OT in adults, which may have been underrecognized before.Eye side, residence, and detection of granuloma may help us in diagnosis of OT in patients with monocular vitreous opacity.For adult patients with presumed OT, negative results of anti-Toxocara antibody in anterior humor cannot rule out the possibility of OT, further detection of vitreous humor is suggested for final diagnosis.

Risk factors for the long-term prognosis and recurrence of HIV-negative cytomegalovirus retinitis in North China

AIM: To demonstrate the clinical features, the risk factors, the visual prognosis and the recurrence of cytomegalovirus(CMV) retinitis(CMVR) in HIV-negative patients.METHODS: HIV-negative patients with CMVR were involved in this study. Best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), intraocular pressure(IOP), CMV-DNA load in aqueous and/or serum samples, treatment, follow-up time, recurrence and complications were recorded. Ocular characteristics were evaluated by fundus photographs. Association between ocular factors and visual prognosis were analyzed by regression analysis.RESULTS: Twenty-five eyes of 16 patients were included. All 25 eyes underwent intravitreal injections of anti-viral agents. The mean log MAR BCVA improved from 0.94±0.98(0.98-0.78) initially to 0.77±0.73(0.82-0.68) at last visit, but not significantly. After antiviral treatment, the aqueous CMV DNA load significantly reduced to(3.42±1.47)×10~2 copies/m L(P=0.001), compared with(2.51±3.11)×10~5 copies/m L at baseline. Macular involvement(R~2=0.475, P=0.049) and initial visual acuity(R~2=0.475, P=0.017) were significantly associated with the poor visual prognosis(BCVA<20/400). The extent of retinal lesions(R~2=0.064, P=0.04) was significant associated with the risk of recurrence of CMVR.CONCLUSION: Intravitreal injection of anti-viral agents offers a safe and effective treatment for CMVR. Macular involvement and initial visual acuity significantly associate with visual prognosis. The extent of retinal lesions is significantly associated with the recurrence of CMVR. These ocular factors can be used as predictive risk factors for long term visual prognosis in HIV-negative CMVR patients.

Degree dependence entropy descriptor for complex networks

In order to supply better accordance for mod eling and simulation of complex networks, a new degree dependence entropy （DDE） descriptor is proposed to describe the degree dependence relationship and corre sponding characteristic in this paper. First of all, degrees of vertices and the shortest path lengths between all pairs of ,ertices are computed. Then the degree dependence matrices under different shortest path lengths are con structed. At last the DDEs are extracted from the degree dependence matrices. Simulation results show that the DDE descriptor can reflect the complexity of degree dependence relationship in complex networks; high DDE indicates complex degree dependence relationship; low DDE indicates the opposite one. The DDE can be seen as a quantitative statistical characteristic, which is meaningful for networked modeling and simulation.

Investigation of mechanical and electrical characteristics of selfsensing pneumatic torsional actuators

Soft pneumatic actuators are one of the most promising actuation for soft robots,and great achievements have been obtained.But it remains challenging to endow sensing capabilities to pneumatic actuators,especially for the sensing ability originating directly from the actuator architecture.Herein,a self-sensing pneumatic torsional actuator(SPTA)is designed based on the electromagnetic induction effect and magnetically responsive materials.The SPTA can generate feedback voltage and current with the deformation,in which the sensing function comes from its inherent structure.To investigate the mechanical and electrical characteristics,an experimental platform and a finite element model are established,respectively.We find that the torsion angle and output torque increase in nonlinear with the actuating pressure.The maximum torsion angle is 66.35°,which is 84.34%of that for the actuator fabricated by pure rubber.The maximum output torque(24.9 N mm)improves by 23.19%compared with the actuator made by pure rubber.As regards the electrical characteristics,the maximum feedback voltage and current are 2.90μV and 29.50 nA when the SPTA is actuated by a pressure of−40 kPa.We also demonstrate that the relationship between the torsion angle and the magnetic flux change is approximately linear.Finally,the number of turns of wires,magnetic powders contents,and magnetic direction on the feedback voltage and current are studied.Results show that the feedback voltage and current can be enhanced by increasing the number of turns and magnetic powders contents.We envision that the SPTA would be promising for soft robots to realize their accuracy control and intelligentization.

Background Increasing evidence supports the role of microRNAs(miRNAs)in major depressive disorder(MDD),but the pathophysiological mechanism remains elusive.Aims To explore the mechanism of microRNA-451a(miR-451a)in the pathology and behaviours of depression.Methods Abnormal miRNAs such as miR-451a reported previously in the serum of patients with MDD were screened and then confirmed in a mouse model of depression induced by chronic restraint stress(CRS).Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice had miR-451a overexpression in the medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC)via adeno-associated virus serotype 9 vectors encoding a pri-mmu-miR-451a-GFP fusion protein followed by behavioural and pathological analyses.Finally,molecular biological experiments were conducted to investigate the potential mechanism of miR-451a against depression.Results The serum levels of miRNA-451awere significantly lower in patients with MDD,with a negative correlation with the Hamilton Depression Scale scores.Additionally,a negative association between serum miR-451a and behavioural despair or anhedonia was observed in CRS mice.Notably,miR-451a expression was significantly downregulated in the mPFC of CRS-susceptible mice.Overexpressing miR-451a in the mPFC reversed the loss of dendritic spines and the depression-like phenotype of CRS mice.Mechanistically,miR-451a could inhibit CRS-induced corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1 expression via targeting transcription factor 2,subsequently protecting dendritic spine plasticity.Conclusions Together,these results highlighted miR-451a as a candidate biomarker and therapeutic target for MDD.

Fast nuclear-spin gates and electrons−nuclei entanglement of neutral atoms in weak magnetic fields

We present a novel class of Rydberg-mediated nuclear-spin entanglement in divalent atoms with global laser pulses.First,we show a fast nuclear-spin controlled phase gate of an arbitrary phase realizable either with two laser pulses when assisted by Stark shifts,or with three pulses.Second,we propose to create an electrons−nuclei-entangled state,which is named a super bell state(SBS)for it mimics a large Bell state incorporating three small Bell states.Third,we show a protocol to create a three-atom electrons-nuclei entangled state which contains the three-body W and Greenberger−Horne−Zeilinger(GHZ)states simultaneously.These protocols possess high intrinsic fidelities,do not require single-site Rydberg addressing,and can be executed with large Rydberg Rabi frequencies in a weak,Gauss-scale magnetic field.The latter two protocols can enable measurement-based preparation of Bell,hyperentangled,and GHZ states,and,specifically,SBS can enable quantum dense coding where one can share three classical bits of information by sending one particle.

Casual associations between blood metabolites and colon cancer

BACKGROUND Limited knowledge exists regarding the casual associations linking blood metabolites and the risk of developing colorectal cancer.AIM To investigate causal associations between blood metabolites and colon cancer.METHODS The study utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization(MR)analysis to investigate the causal impact of 486 blood metabolites on colorectal cancer.The primary method of analysis used was the inverse variance weighted model.To further validate the results several sensitivity analyses were performed,including Cochran's Q test,MR-Egger intercept test,and MR robust adjusted profile score.These additional analyses were conducted to ensure the reliability and robustness of the findings.RESULTS After rigorous selection for genetic variation,486 blood metabolites were included in the MR analysis.We found Mannose[odds ratio(OR)=2.09(1.10-3.97),P=0.024],N-acetylglycine[OR=3.14(1.78-5.53),P=7.54×10^(-8)],X-11593-O-methylascorbate[OR=1.68(1.04-2.72),P=0.034],1-arachidonoylglycerophosphocholine[OR=4.23(2.51-7.12),P=6.35×10^(-8)]and 1-arachidonoylglycerophosphoethanolamine 4[OR=3.99(1.17-13.54),P=0.027]were positively causally associated with colorectal cancer,and we also found a negative causal relationship between Tyrosine[OR=0.08(0.01-0.63),P=0.014],Urate[OR=0.25(0.10-0.62),P=0.003],N-acetylglycine[0.73(0.54-0.98),P=0.033],X-12092[OR=0.89(0.81-0.99),P=0.028],Succinylcarnitine[OR=0.48(0.27-0.84),P=0.09]with colorectal cancer.A series of sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the rigidity of the results.CONCLUSION This study showed a causal relationship between 10 blood metabolites and colorectal cancer,of which 5 blood metabolites were found to be causal for the development of colorectal cancer and were confirmed as risk factors.The other five blood metabolites are protective factors.

Geographical background and dispersal ability may strongly influence assemblage dissimilarity;however,these aspects have generally been overlooked in previous large-scale beta diversity studies.Here,we examined whether the patterns and drivers of taxonomic beta diversity(TBD)and phylogenetic beta diversity(PBD)of breeding birds in China vary across(1)regions on both sides of the hu Line,which demarcates China’s topographical,climatic,economic,and social patterns,and(2)species with different dispersal ability.TBD and PBD were calculated and partitioned into turnover and nestedness components using a moving window approach.Variables representing climate,habitat heterogeneity,and habitat quality were employed to evaluate the effects of environmental filtering.Spatial distance was considered to assess the impact of dispersal limitation.Variance partitioning analysis was applied to assess the relative roles of these variables.In general,the values of TBD and PBD were high in mountainous areas and were largely determined by environmental filtering.However,different dominant environmental filters on either side of the hu Line led to divergent beta diversity patterns.Specifically,climate-driven species turnover and habitat heterogeneity-related species nestedness dominated the regions east and west of the line,respectively.Additionally,bird species with stronger dispersal ability were more susceptible to environmental filtering,resulting in more homogeneous assemblages.Our results indicated that regions with distinctive geographical backgrounds may present different ecological factors that lead to divergent assemblage dissimilarity patterns,and dispersal ability determines the response of assemblages to these ecological factors.Identifying a single universal explanation for the observed pattern without considering these aspects may lead to simplistic or incomplete conclusions.Consequently,a comprehensive understanding of large-scale beta diversity patterns and effective planning of conservation strategies necessitate the

Recursive calibration for a lithium iron phosphate battery for electric vehicles using extended Kalman filtering

In this paper,an efficient model structure composed of a second-order resistance-capacitance network and a simply analytical open circuit voltage versus state of charge(SOC) map is applied to characterize the voltage behavior of a lithium iron phosphate battery for electric vehicles(EVs).As a result,the overpotentials of the battery can be depicted using a second-order circuit network and the model parameterization can be realized under any battery loading profile,without a special characterization experiment.In order to ensure good robustness,extended Kalman filtering is adopted to recursively implement the calibration process.The linearization involved in the calibration algorithm is realized through recurrent derivatives in a recursive form.Validation results show that the recursively calibrated battery model can accurately delineate the battery voltage behavior under two different transient power operating conditions.A comparison with a first-order model indicates that the recursively calibrated second-order model has a comparable accuracy in a major part of the battery SOC range and a better performance when the SOC is relatively low.
