The Coupling Effect of Flood Discharge and Storm Surge on Extreme Flood Stages: A Case Study in the Pearl River Delta, South China

The low-lying Pearl River Delta in South China is subject to severe flood threats due to watershed floods,sea level rise,and storm *** is still unknown to what extent and how far inland storm surges and sea level rise impact the extreme flood *** study investigated the coupling effect of flood discharge and storm surge on the extreme flood stages in the Pearl River Delta by using on site observations and simulations generated by the Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System *** results show that flood discharges dominated the flood stages in the middle and upper Pearl River Delta,while the storm surges had maximum impact near the river *** storm surges and flood stages showed a significant increase after 2002 in the Hengmen *** design flood stages for the post-2002 period were 0.23–0.89 m higher than the pre-2002 ones at Hengmen at the six return periods from 5 to 200 years examined in this *** difference declined toward the upper waterway and reduced to zero about 23 km away from the Hengmen *** coincidence of extreme flood discharges and storm surges further escalates the extreme flood stages in the lower 30 km of estuarine *** results quantify the severe threats due to sea level rise and intensified storm surges in the lower Pearl River Delta,and are significant for urban planning and designing and managing flood control facilities in the Pearl River Delta and in other coastal fluvial deltas.

Bulk mineral resources of iron ores, copper ores, bauxite, lead ores, zinc ores and potassium salt play a pivotal role on the world＇s and China＇s economic development. This study analyzed and predicted their resources base and potential, development and utilization and their world＇s and China＇s supply and demand situation in the future 20 years. The supply and demand of these six bulk mineral products are generally balanced, with a slight surplus, which will guarantee the stability of the international mineral commodity market supply. The six mineral resources （especially iron ores and copper ores） are abundant and have a great potential, and their development and utilization scale will gradually increase. Till the end of 2014, the reserve- production ratio of iron, copper, bauxite, lead, zinc ores and potassium salt was 95 years, 42 years, 100 years, 17 years, 37 years and 170 years, respectively. Except lead ores, the other five types all have reserve-production ratio exceeding 20 years, indicative of a high resources guarantee degree. If the utilization of recycled metals is counted in, the supply of the world＇s six mineral products will exceed the demand in the future twenty years. In 2015-2035, the supply of iron ores, refined copper, primary aluminum, refined lead, zinc and potassium salt will exceed their demand by 0.4-0.7 billion tons （Gt）, 5.0-6.0 million tons （Mt）, 1.1-8.9 Mt, 1.0-2.0 Mt, 1.2-2.0 Mt and 4.8-5.6 Mt, respectively. It is predicted that there is no problem with the supply side of bulk mineral products such as iron ores, but local or structural shortage may occur because of geopolitics, monopoly control, resources nationalism and trade friction. Affected by China＇s compressed industrialized development model, the demand of iron ores （crude steel）, potassium salt, refined lead, refined copper, bauxite （primary aluminum） and zinc will gradually reach their peak in advance. Rapid damage prediction for wind disasters is significant in emergency response and disaster mitigation,although it faces many *** this study,a 1-km grid of wind speeds was simulated by the Holland model using the 6-h interval records of maximum wind speed(MWS) for tropical cyclones(TC) from 1949 to 2020 in South *** MWS during a TC transit was used to build damage rate curves for affected population and direct economic *** results show that the Holland model can efficiently simulate the grid-level MWS,which is comparable to the ground observations with R2 of0.71 to 0.93 and mean absolute errors(MAEs) of 3.3 to 7.5 m/*** estimated damage rates were in good agreement with the reported values with R^(2)=0.69-0.87 for affected population and R^(2)=0.65-0.84 for GDP *** coastal areas and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have the greatest risk of wind disasters,mainly due to the region’s high density of population and developed *** proposed method is suitable for rapid damage prediction and supporting emergency response and risk assessment at the community level for TCs in the coastal areas of China.

Boreal peatlands represent a large global carbon pool. The relationships between carbon mineralization, soil temperature and moisture in the permafrost peatlands of the Great Hing＇an Mountains, China, were examined. The CO2 emissions were measured during laboratory incubations of samples from four sites under different temperatures （5, 10, 15, and 20℃） and moisture contents （0%, 30%, 60%, 100% water holding capacity （WHC） and completely water saturated）. Total carbon mineralization ranged from 15.51 to 112.92 mg C under the treatments for all sites. Carbon mineralization rates decreased with soil depth, increased with temperature, and reached the highest at 60% WHC at the same temperature. The calculated temperature coefficient （Q10） values ranged from 1.84 to 2.51 with the soil depths and moisture. However, the values were not significantly affected by soil moisture and depth for all sites due to the different peat properties （P 〉 0.05）. We found that the carbon mineralization could be successfully predicted as a two-compartment function with temperature and moisture （R^2 〉 0.96） and total carbon mineralization was significantly affected by temperature and moisture （P 〈 0.05）. Thus, temperature and moisture would play important roles in carbon mineralization of permafrost peatlands in the Great Hing＇an Mountains, indicating that the permafrost peatlands would be sensitive to the environment change, and the permafrost peatlands would be potentially mineralized under future climate change.

A large and reversible magnetocaloric effect is found in the compound DyB2, which is associated with two successive mag- netic transitions： a spin-reorientation-like transition followed by a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition. These two transitions appreciably enlarge the magnetic-refrigeration temperature window and yield a huge refrigeration capacity of 610 J kg^-1, with a maximum magnetic entropy change -ASmax of 17 J kg^-1K^-1, at a magnetic-field change of 5 T. The corresponding values for low magnetic-field change of 2 T are 193 J kg^-1 and 7.4 J kg-lK^-1, respectively.

Allatostatins （ASTs）, a family of insect neuropeptide, can inhibit juvenile hormone （JH） biosynthesis by the corpora allata （CA） in Diploptera punctata, and therefore be regarded as potential leads for the discovery of new insect growth regulators （1GRs）. But several shortcomings, such as their sensitivity to peptidases and high cost, impeded their practical application in pest management. In order to discover new IGRs, one AST analog B1 possessing non-peptide group was discovered with high ability to inhibit JH biosynthesis in vitro （IC50： 0.09 μmol/L） in our previous studies. In the present work, two series of B1 analogs with different substituents on the N-terminus region were designed and synthesized. The result suggested that benzene showed better activity than other heterocycles, and the para-substitution on the benzene was beneficial for activity. Moreover, analogs with logP value over 2.0 exhibited good activity, which indicated the hydrophobicity is important to the bioactivity. Three dimension quantitative structure-activity relationship （3D-QSAR） studies were performed to highlight the structural require- ments of ASTanalogs, which demonstrated introduction of bulkier substituents on the N-terminus would increase the activity. Analog Ⅱ12 （IC50： 0.08 μmol/L） exhibited similar inhibitory activity to the lead B1, but its synthetic route was simpler than B1. Therefore, Ⅱ12 could be used as a new lead compound for the discovery eco-friendly IGRs.
