Mesozoic magmatic rocks occur widely in the South China Block and are generally interpreted as the manifestations of the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath *** magmatism in southeast(SE)China continued from the Late Permian through the Late Cretaceous with an inferred lull between 125 Ma and 115 Ma that is known in the literature as the Cretaceous"magmatic quiescence".We report in-situ zircon U-Pb ages,Hf-O and whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopes,and whole-rock geochemistry of Cretaceous granitoids on Hainan Island and discuss their magmatic evolution within the framework of the Late Mesozoic geodynamics of SE *** recognize two main stages of the emplacement of Cretaceous granitoids on Hainan,first around 120 Ma and then around 100-95 Ma,displaying high-K calc-alkaline,I-type geochemical *** in both age groups are enriched in liLE and LREE,but depleted in Nb,Ta,Ba,Sr,and *** 120 Ma granites have zircon ε_(Hf)(t)values of-2.6 to 2.3 corresponding to Hf crustal model ages,ranging from 0.79 Ga to 1.03 Ga,and δ^(18)O values ranging from 6.9‰to 7.7‰.Zircons from 100-95 Ma granites have ε_(Hf)(t)values of-4.2 to 1.1 corresponding to Hf crustal model ages of 1.08 Ga to 1.42 Ga,and δ^(18)O values ranging from 6.7‰to 8.4‰.Increasing ε_(Hf)(t)values of the Cretaceous Hainan granites with younger crystallization ages indicate addition of more juvenile components and reworking of crustal material into their melt *** ε_(Nd)(t)values of the 120 Ma and 100-95 Ma granitoids range between-4.1 to-0.4 and-7.7 to-4.0,*** calculated two-stage model age of the 100-95 Ma granitoids clusters between 1.25 Ga and 1.53 *** isotopic data suggest that magmas of the Cretaceous granitoids were produced by partial melting of Mesoproterozoic metabasaltic rocks,which make up much of the crystalline basement of the southern Cathaysia *** geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the Cretaceous granitoids on H

A novel two-dimensional nanopattemed TiO2 thin film has been synthesized through the interaction between cationic Gemini surfactant molecules and the prepared TiO2 colloid nanoparticles with average diameters of 8 nm by controlling the surface pressure of the monolayer. TEM photographs from the formed Gemini-TiO2 composite monolayer confirm that the prepared TiO2 film is of a branch nanopattern.

The Chinese Bayan Obo deposit is a world-class rare earth element(REE) deposit with considerable niobium(Nb) and iron(Fe) resources. A complete genetic understanding on all metals is fundamental for establishing genetic models at Bayan Obo. With extensive research being focused on REE enrichment, the timing and controls of Nb enrichment remain unresolved at Bayan Obo, which is mainly due to the challenges in dating, i.e. multistage thermal events, fine-grained minerals with complex textures and the rare occurrence of uranium-enriched minerals with mature dating methods. Based on robust geological and petrographic frameworks, here we conducted ion probe uranium-lead(U-Pb) dating of ferrocolumbite to unravel the timing, hence the genesis of Nb mineralization. Three types of hydrothermal ferrocolumbites—key Nb-bearing minerals—are identified based on their textures and mineral assemblages. They yield U-Pb ages of 1312 ± 47 Ma(n = 99), 438 ± 7 Ma(n = 93), and 268 ± 5 Ma(n = 19), respectively. In line with deposit geology, we tentatively link the first, second and third stage Nb mineralization to Mesoproterozoic carbonatite magmatism, ubiquitous early Paleozoic hydrothermal activity, and Permian granitic magmatism, respectively. While quantifying the contribution of metal endowment from each stage requires further investigation, our new dates highlight that multi-stage mineralization is critical for Nb enrichment at Bayan Obo, which may also have implications for the enrichment mechanism of Nb in REE deposits in general.

We demonstrated a simple and effective dual-templating approach for the synthesis of hierarchically mesocellular carbon foams by using nonionic surfactant of sorbitan monooleate and silica colloid particles as sacrificial templates, and resorcinol/ formaldehyde as carbon source. The representative carbon foam has dual mesopore sizes of 4 and 10 nm, and possesses the specific surface area of 580 m^2/g and the total pore volume of 0.80 cm^3/g.

New samples returned by China Chang’e-5(CE-5)mission offer an opportunity for studying the lunar geologic longevity,space weathering,and regolith *** age determination of the CE-5 samples was among the first scientific questions to be ***,the precious samples,most in the micrometer size range,challenge many traditional analyses on large single crystals of zircon developed for massive bulk ***,we developed a non-destructive rapid screening of individual zirconium-containing particle for isotope geochronology based on a Micro X-ray fluorescence analysis(μXRF).The selected particles were verified via scanning electron microscopy(SEM),3D X-ray microscopy(XRM),and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy(FIB-SEM)techniques,which showed that zirconium-bearing minerals with several microns were precisely positioned and readily suitable for site-specific isotopic dating by second ion mass spectrometry(SIMS).Such protocol could be also appli-cable in non-destructively screening other types of particles for different scientific *** there-fore proposed a correlative workflow for comprehensively studying the CE-5 lunar samples from single particles on nanometer to atomic *** various microscopic and spectromicroscopic instru-ments together,this workflow consists of six steps:(1)single-particle selection with non-destructive μXRF technique,(2)2D/3D morphological and structural characterization with a correlative submicron 3D XRM and nanoscale resolution FIB-SEM imaging methods,(3)SEM analysis of the surface morphology and chemistry of the selected particle,(4)a series of microscopic and microbeam analyses(e.g.,SEM,electron probe microanalysis,and SIMS)on the cross-section of the selected particle to obtain structural,mineralogical,chemical,and isotopic features from the micron to nanometer scale,(5)advanced 2D/3D characterization and site-specific sample preparation of thin foil/tip specimens on a microregion of inter-est in

The assembly and breakup of Nuna and Rodinia, two successive supercontinents in the Proterozoic, provide key evidence for the establishment of supercontinent cycles. Reliable palaeogeographic reconstructions at the cores of the two supercontinents are critical for understanding the evolution and geodynamics of the supercontinent cycles. In addition, there are fundamental aspects of the Nuna-Rodinia transition that remain poorly understood, including the ways in which Nuna broke up and Rodinia assembled, either through introversion [1] or extroversion [2].

The South China Block,consisting of the Yangtze and the Cathaysia blocks,is one of the largest Precambrian blocks in eastern ***,the early history of the Cathaysia Block is poorly understood due largely to intensive and extensive reworking by Phanerozoic polyphase orogenesis and magmatism which strongly overprinted and obscured much of the Precambrian geological *** this paper,we use the detrital zircon U–Pb age and Hf isotope datasets as an alternative approach to delineate the early history of the Cathaysia *** of published 4041 Precambrian detrital zircon ages from a number of(meta)sedimentary samples and river sands exhibits a broad age spectrum,with three major peaks at485 Ma,853 Ma and70 Ma(counting for0%,6%and4%of all analyses,respectively),and four subordinate peaks at426 Ma,074 Ma,80 Ma and88 *** of seven detrital zircon age peaks are broadly coincident with the crystallisation ages of.89–1.83 Ga,.43 Ga,.0–0.98 Ga and.82–0.72 Ga for known igneous rocks exposed in Cathaysia,whereas,igneous rocks with ages of.49 Ga and.59 Ga have not yet been *** Hf isotopic data from 1085 detrital zircons yield Hf model ages(TDM C)between.19 Ga and.81 Ga,and the calculatedεHf(t)values between-40.2 and *** Archean detrital zircons are exclusively oval in shape with complicated internal textures,indicating that they were sourced by long distance transportations and strong abrasion from an exotic Archean *** contrast,the majority of detrital zircons in age between.9 and.8 Ga are euhedral to subhedral crystals,indicative of local derivation by short distance transportations from their *** oldest crustal basement rocks in Cathaysia were most likely formed by generation of juvenile crust and reworking of recycled Archean components in Late Paleoproterozoic at.9–1.8 Ga,rather than in the Archean as previously *** and recycling of the continental crust are likely the dominant processes for the crustal evol

linking global rock records geologically and paleomagnetically in deep time has revealed that plate motion of Earth's lithosphere is characterized by periodic supercontinent *** mutually competing geodynamic models have been proposed to explain the break-up of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia,which invoke either underlying mantle plumes(i.e.,a superplume)[1]or surrounding accretionary orogenic systems[2].A precise under-standing of the tectonic setting of Neoproterozoic magmatism around the periphery of Rodinia is crucial for distinguishing between these two contrasting hypotheses.
