The good genes hypothesis states that choosers prefer individuals of high intrinsic quality to individuals of lower intrinsic *** in longevity is thought to reflect,in p.r.,intrinsic quality differences of individuals in addition to the costs of mating and *** we rep.r. longevity variation of Drosophila pseudoobscura,a species in which previous exp.r.ments have demonstrated that individual mate preferences(pre-touching mate assessments)of females and males are associated with enhanced numbers of eclosed(adult)offspring and higher egg-to-adult survival(offspring viability).Using mate assessment arenas and protocols similar to those in a previous exp.r.ment that demonstrated fitness benefits to breeders and their offspring of mating with individuals they preferred,we tested the following predictions:(i)preferred discriminatees live longer than non-preferred discriminatees;(ii)males live longer than females;and(iii)virgins live longer than mated *** exp.r.ment yielded 938 individuals for longevity *** and mating status affected longevity:males lived longer than females,virgin females lived longer than mated females,but there were no differences in longevity for mated and virgin ***-preferred discriminatees of both sexes survived as long as preferred discriminatees,a result inconsistent with the prediction of the good genes hypothesis for mate *** our knowledge,this is the first demonstration of the cost of reproduction for females in *** and of longevity variation of preferred and non-preferred discriminatees.

phosphorus utilization response of pigs and broiler chickens to diets supplemented with antimicrobials and phytase

Three exp.r.ments were conducted to evaluate the phosphorus(p) utilization responses of pigs and broiler chickens to dietary supplementation with antimicrobials and phytase and to determine if p digestibility response to phytase is affected by supplementation with antimicrobials. Exp.r.ment 1 used 4 diets(a basal negative control formulated to contain 0.41% total p and 0.71% calcium [Ca] without added antimicrobials, basal negative control with added carbadox, basal negative control with added tylosin, or basal negative control with added virginiamycin) and six 18-kg barrows in individual metabolism crates p.r.diet. There was no effect of antimicrobials on p and Ca digestibility or retention. Carbadox supplementation increased(p retention of gross energy(GE) and supplementation with tylosin increased(p retention relative to the basal negative control diet. Exp.r.ment 2 used eight 19-kg barrows in individual metabolism crates p.r.treatment and 9 dietary treatments arranged in a 3×3 factorial of antimicrobials(none, tylosin, or virginiamycin) and phytase(0, 500, or 1,500 FTU/kg).phytase addition to the diets linearly increased(ppp.r.nt total tract digestibility or retention of p, Ca, nitrogen(N) and GE. Supplementation with antimicrobials did not affect app.r.nt total tract digestibility or retention of p, Ca, N or GE. There were linear effects(p phytase on Ca utilization in diets that were not supplemented with antimicrobials but only tendencies(p pplemented with tylosin or virginiamycin. phytase linearly improved(p pplemented with tylosin or virginiamycin but not in diets without added antimicrobials. Both the fruit mesocarp and the seeds of winter squash can be used for consumption,although the focus of breeding efforts varies by *** bred for fruit consumption are selected for fruit mesocarp quality traits such as carotenoid content,p.r.ent dry matter,and p.r.ent soluble solids,while these traits are essentially ignored in oilseed *** comp.r. fruit development in these two types of squash,we sequenced the fruit transcriptome of two cultivars bred for different p.r.oses:an acorn squash,‘Sweet rEBA’,and an oilseed pumpkin,‘Lady Godiva’.putative metabolic pathways were developed for carotenoid,starch,and sucrose synthesis in winter squash fruit and squash homologs were identified for each of the structural genes in the *** expression,especially of known rate-limiting and branch point genes,corresponded with metabolite accumulation both across development and between the two ***,developmental regulation of metabolite genes is an imp.r.ant factor in winter squash fruit quality.

p.r.ose The p.r.ose of this study was to comp.r. kinetics,kinematics and muscle activation strategies between male and female collegiate level athletes during unanticipated sidestepping tasks to further the understanding of sex-specific differ-ences in injury incidence and their potential influence on ACL injury *** Three-dimensional kinematics,ground reaction forces and surface electromyography of eight lower limb muscles were recorded during unanticipated sidestepping in 20 male soccer and 17 female field hockey National Collegiate Athlet-ics Association Division 1 ***,hip and knee kinematics,knee joint moments,total muscle activation(TMA:knee,gluteal,quadriceps,hamstrings and gastrocnemii)and directed co-contraction ratios(DCCr)were comp.r.d between groups with two-sample t *** No sex differences were observed for peak frontal and transverse plane knee moments(p>0.05),however males had 10%greater knee flexion moments(p=0.047).Females had lower hip flexion and abduction and greater hip internal rota-tion angles than males likely concomitant with the 30%reduction in gluteal TMA(pr quadriceps TMA during pre-contact and weight acceptance and higher hamstrings TMA during weight acceptance(proup averages for DCCr were not representative of individual patterns,where the majority of males were quadriceps dominant comp.r.d with *** Female and male team sp.r. athletes display similar frontal and transverse plane knee moments,however their ability to supp.r./counter the load applied(i.e.,muscle activations strategies)to the knee joint differed.

Acorn squash(Cucurbita pepo)is an iconic fall vegetable in the United States,known for its unique fruit shape and also prized for its culinary *** is known about the metabolism that underlies the development of fruit quality attributes such as color,sweetness,texture and nutritional qualities in acorn squash,or any other winter squash grown *** provide insight into winter squash fruit and seed development and add to the genomic resources in the Cucurbita genus,rNA sequencing was used to generate an acorn squash fruit and seed transcriptome from the cultivar Sweet rEBA at critical points throughout fruit development.141838600 high-quality paired-end Illumina reads were assembled into 55949 unigenes.85%of unigenes with predicted open reading frames had homology with previously identified genes and over 62%could be functionally *** with the watermelon and cucumber genomes provided confirmation that the unigenes are full-length and comprehensive,covering an average of 90%of the coding sequence of their homologs and 72%of the cucumber and watermelon *** candidate genes associated with carotenoid and carbohydrate metabolism were identified toward a resource for winter squash fruit quality trait *** transcriptome represents a major advance in *** genomics,providing significant new sequence information and revealing the rep.r.oire of genes expressed throughout winter squash fruit and seed *** studies on the genetic basis of fruit quality and future breeding efforts will be enhanced by tools and insights developed from this resource.

Acetaminophen metabolites p-aminophenol and AM404 inhibit microglial activation

Aim: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, deposits of amyloid beta and neurofibrillary tangles. Inflammation facilitated by microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, contribute to the pathogenesis of AD. Epidemiological data indicate that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors, reduce the risk of developing AD when administered over the course of two or more years. The mechanisms underlying this protective effect are unknown. Acetaminophen (p.r.cetamol), which is not effective as an inhibitor of COX in p.r.pheral tissues, may provide similar protection without the adverse effects of chronic NSAID use. The beneficial effects of acetaminophen have been proposed to stem from its metabolites p-aminophenol and N-arachidonoylaminophenol (AM404), of which, AM404 possesses analgesic and antip.r.tic prop.r.ies. The goal of this study was to comp.r. the effects of acetaminophen and its metabolites on microglial immune function and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms engaged by these compounds. Methods: Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated BV-2 murine microglia were used as models. Microglial activation was monitored by their secretion of nitric oxide. results: p-aminophenol and AM404 sup.r.ssed nitric oxide secretion from stimulated microglia more effectively than acetaminophen through pathways that were independent of COX inhibition, cannabinoid receptor type two (CB2) inhibition, and activation of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TrpV1). Conclusion: Since AM404 has been previously demonstrated to attenuate NF-kB activation, it is likely that the protective effects of acetaminophen against adverse microglia activation are mediated by its metabolites p-aminophenol and AM404 inhibiting this transcription factor.

reciprocal Association between psychological Distress and pTSD and Their relationship with pre-Displacement Stressors among Displaced Women

Next generation patient-derived prostate cancer xenograft models

There is a critical need for more effective therapeutic ap.r.aches for prostate cancer. research in this area, however, has been seriously hamp.r.d by a lack of clinically relevant, exp.r.mental in vivo models of the disease. This review p.r.icularly focuses on the development of prostate cancer xenograft models based on subrenal capsule grafting of patients＇ tumor tissue into nonobese diabetic/ severe combined immunodeficient （NOD/ SCID） mice. This technique allows successful development of transplantable, patient-derived cancer tissue xenograft lines not only from aggressive metastatic, but also from localized prostate cancer tissues. The xenografts have been found to retain key biological prop.r.ies of the original malignancies, including histopathological and molecular characteristics, tumor heterogeneity, response to androgen ablation and metastatic ability. As such, they are highly clinically relevant and provide valuable tools for studies of prostate cancer progression at cellular and molecular levels, drug screening for p.r.onalized cancer therapy and preclinical drug efficacy testing; especially when a panel of models is used to cover a broader spectrum of the disease. These xenograft models could therefore be viewed as next-generation models of prostate cancer.
